Headed to Kumo expecting a romantic and delicious sushi dinner from one of the restaurants rated among the "Best New Restaurants" in Los Angeles magazine. We left disappointed and deflated after spending nearly $300 on the tasting menu for poor quality, fishy smelling and tasting sushi.
The sake was good. The service was great. It was such a waste for such nice people to be serving such bad food. The decor cool if a little cheesy. Save your money and your health. Take yourself & your special somebody to Azami at Melrose and LaBrea instead.
Went here for drinks after work one week after it opened. The drink I had was SO great. I had about 3 of them. Very strong and very good. I had a small appetizer of lobster with mango. It was very light and fresh. The decor was very cool. I love the clusters of clear bubbles hanging and the flat sceens behind the sushi bar. Waitstaff was very nice. It was a little cramped with tables so close to each other. I would go back for drinks.

My valentine brought me here and I was pleasantly surprised! He tends to shy away from all things raw and difficult to eat....and yes the portions are small, but when a restaurant presents you with smallish portions, they rely on the quality of their food, which is quite good here. The dishes are prepared to look pleasing and are sparse so you can relish the flavors.
The atmosphere has this futuristic all-white mod feel. Orchids adorn the tables and the chairs are quite the balancing act. I was afraid to lean back and it appeared that the rest of the diners didn't have too much faith in gravity either considering that most kept their postures stiff.
We ordered the Shishitou peppers (4.00), Truffle mashed potatoes (6.00), Shake (pasta with salmon and mushrooms (15.00)), yellowtail love affair roll (20.00), unagi (6.00) and a carafe of Hakkai San sake (26.00). The sake was excellent, served chilled and had such a clean flavor to it. The love affair roll was also very good. Yellow tail meat is used on the outside of the roll and a mix of yellowtail and avacado and pepper are found in the center of the roll. It was a very high fish to rice ratio, but the fish was so good I didn't complain.
The Shishitou peppers were also very good as were the black truffle mashed potatoes, although I'd recommend other things over the potatoes if you come here. Unagi was good, but not amazing and the pasta reminded me of something I had eaten in Italy. The salty salmon is surprising and mushrooms take away from the fishiness of the dish. I still felt it was a bit too salty though.
Our waiter was very friendly and came off as honest and good-natured. We were accidentally served some sort of pizza-type thing. We told our server and he took it back in and it promptly came back out to the table right next to us.
We still went out for jack in the box afterwards.

So good and nice and all white, kudos for being so pure with the decor. But at the same time the video go to be redundant after a while, so you loose one star.
Don't worry ill be back, i look good in a suit in your booth
So I'm bored today at work and started Yelping and can't stop because I keep thinking of all these great places and I finally thought of a shitty one!!!
Me and my buddy went here with two girls on opening night!! We spent over $300 without tip, and left only to hit up in n' out burger!!!
Drinks were ok, food was ok, but the drawback was I left my magnifying glass at home.
Every portion of everything we ordered was TINY!!!
Try Katsuya, or hell try sushi mon on Third by the beverly center, but I would stay far away from Kumo...Unless to look in the window.
Nice, but cheesey south beach theme

Jerrold S. was right...this location is cursed. It's been so many different things.
love: the white on white decor, the flatscreens with murakami videos, the service, the private dining room
love: the hamachi sashimi with jalapeno and garlic oil, the spun sugar cone, beautiful plating
no love: bartenders - sake should never be served in the same shot glass one shoots tequila with....geesh
conclusion - the price point was a little high for the lack of the wow factor. this location IS cursed.
Gorgeous restaurant - stark white backdrop. The crowd was pretty and fun for a Saturday night. The menu is interesting to say the least. They have a lot of cold appetizer options, main dishes, sushi, rolls and pasta (yeah you heard me). The sushi itself was good not great and doesn't stand out in the crowded 3rd st west hollywood area. The best dish we had was the sweet shrimp with salmon roe and caviar. They fried the heads and put the meat in a nice broth with the roe and caviar. Its a little pricey but I think Kumo will finally break the curse of this location and hang around for a bit. I might come back with a big group for a fun night but not a casual place you'd go for sushi during the week.
Nicely decorated in white completely with a "sony style" atmosphere. LA with more Japanese than any other in the USA it is has stiff competition.
