Was in the VCU area, so why not venture back to the old Kokonut Grill I used to eat at while on campus. Some things have changed, and it's just become an average food spot now.

The Food: I went with the "Box" option for my visit. 1 protein, 1 sauce and 3 sides. I went with the Spicy Garlic Chicken, White Rice, Spicy Fries and Sesame Noodles (Chilled). The chicken wasn't that flavorful or tender when I was eating it. The spicy garlic flavor wasn't fully there, so it was almost plain. The fries had some spice seasoning topped on it, which was good, but nothing noteworthy. The chilled sesame noodles were good though, nice subtle sesame flavor that was chilled hit nicely. Overall, a just an average cooked meal. I also remember them serving mac salad, that was a fan favorite amongst myself and a few friends, kind of sad its gone.

The Service: Service was good! Staff here are friendly and welcoming. And, my order came out in a timely manner.

The Atmosphere: Not a lot of seating inside. It's mostly a takeout kind of food spot. But still has the nice decor, paired with the nice college/RVA feel.

Overall, a 3/5. Just an average food spot now. Maybe its nostalgia trying to make me like this place, but the quality from what I've seen has gone down. I probably won't be returning here unfortunately

I adore the Kokonut Grill! This local family-owned restaurant open back in 2015 offers an Asian Fusion cuisine at a high quality with an affordable price. Everything here is made fresh, To-Order, with vegan and vegetarian-friendly menu options. My personal favorite order is the bowl filled with tofu, spicy garlic sauce, and coconut rice. Each of their bowl entrees also comes with shredded cabbage for a fresh crunch.

If you have a sweet tooth, I highly suggest trying the Funnel Cake Remix. This is a square funnel cake topped with your choice of powder sugar, chocolate, vanilla, berries, taro, honeydew, matcha, or coconut sugar. It is divine!

The restaurant offers a few in door and outdoor tables. It's a great, casual place to eat with friends or family or take a meal to-go. You will live these flavors!

My friend and I were really looking forward to eating here as we both lived in Hawaii. The crunchy chicken (spin on katsu) didn't have much seasoning so they supplied what I likened to a chicken soup flavored dip. The KB coleslaw salad, which is supposed to be popular, didn't have a lot of flavor. My friend the garlic chicken, with the sauce just pour on. We won't be back. Service was good though.

I got the box option with crispy chicken and liked it! Everything was fresh. They no longer offered the macaroni salad that I wanted, but the rest of the sides were great regardless. The chilled sesame noodles are good side to eat in the summer heat.
It didn't take too long for the food to come out either. Kokonut Grill has also supported many VCU organizations in the past so I appreciate their involvement in the community.

It's not good. If you like flavor... just turn back around. I wrote this review before but I saw that the owners claimed since their food has no chemicals, msgs, sodium, and is healthy is why there may be a taste difference. I eat healthy and I'm here to say healthy food can be tasty and flavorful. This spot just isn't it! I recently went with my boyfriend to try this place and the food was just bad. No flavor, the crispy chicken tasted like of a cut up version of school lunch chicken patties, and the sauces really were not good. I don't even understand how you can get sauce wrong. Whoever likes this place honestly have taste buds of a 4 year old. I honestly felt like i wasted my money.

About a 2-2.5: Kokonut Grill has been around since 2015, and they serve up some Asian fusion eats, which include vegan- and vegetarian-friendly options. I liked how you can 'build-your-own' box with your choice of proteins (grilled chicken, crispy chicken, tofu, or vegetarian), sauces (teriyaki, garlic, sweet & sour, spicy, sweet chili, spicy garlic, or spicy KG), and your choice of sides (white rice, coconut rice, cold sesame noodles, sweet sour slaw, spicy KG slaw, or fries/spicy fries). There are also various appetizers, such as veggie rolls, sesame balls, and fried veggie dumplings.

We ordered a few of the Koko Boxes to go, which came with your choice of 1 protein, 1 sauce, and 3 sides:
+when we went, shrimp was an option, and we opted for the shrimp in spicy garlic; crispy chicken with a side of spicy KG; and, grilled chicken with teriyaki sauce
+we opted for the white rice, cold sesame noodles, and the spicy KG slaw

Portions were generous, and if you opt for rice, it is definitely more rice heavy. I wish that the portion for the protein was a bit more, as the ratio was definitely off compared to the rice/noodles/slaw. The sauces could have been more flavorful and more thick in consistency, as there was a lot of runny liquid at the bottom of the container.

Service was quick and efficient, and when we went, it was carryout only.

I'm glad I was finally able to give Kokonut Grill a try, but not sure if I'd go out of my way to return.

      There's limited street parking available.

Food was great. The sesame noodles needed more flavor, but the slaw was fantastic and the chicken was perfectly crispy. Friendly service, and a super cute interior. Beware that seating is minimal, but this is a perfect to-go place.
