Thomas and Colleen K.
Thomas Kohnen enjoyed 22 years of pleasant family life in his home town of Bottrop, West Germany. He grew up like most kids in West Germany. For him and every other boy on the block, his dream was to become a soccer player until his coach determined Thomas had to have two left feet. He had normal grades and finished high school at age 15 in May of 1977. (Fifteen is the standard age for completing school in Germany.) In August of the same year, he took an apprenticeship as a Konditor (Confectionist) at the Franz Bergendahl Bacherrei. It was the biggest bakery in town and very well known for its disciplined training procedures. He worked as an apprentice for three years while also attending trade school. He became a tested and proven journeyman, learning his trade from A to Z. At age 19 he joined the German Navy for 15 months (mandatory military service is required of all young men in Germany). He left as Lance Corporal. Continuing to work for Franz Bergendahl, he was offered the opportunity to go on a training program in the United States. At age 22 he left his hometown to head for the unknown. Upon his arrival here he found friendly people and a land of sunshine. "Sunshine is a rarity where I come from," he says. Another delightful discovery was made on his first visit to an American bakery - they were "donuts", something he had never seen before...

Absolutely delightful!
I love this bakery because 1) everything i get is delish! 2) its different...Its cool how they have grown and offer a lot of different options, for example: Beer, pastries, sanwiches!
anyway, staff is awesome, good seating inside and outside
I truly recommend for anybody that's passing by to stop and have an "afternoon delight" yay!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Wellington J.Torrance, CA05659Feb 25, 2024
My wife and I were visiting from SoCal for a couple of days. It was a Saturday when we visited this nostalgic town. The bakery was bustling with the line about 15 people long. It moved along fairly quickly. The bakery display was VERY attractive!! It was impossible to find a bare spot on any wall!!
Service was very friendly, and the food was delicious. The cinnamon rolls were a tad dry and lacked sufficient cinnamon. Lemon bars were top tier. The apple pastry was to die for. Coconut macaroons were excellent.
Our sandwich was mouthwatering!! Without a doubt, this place is on our highlight reel for travelers!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

So on our get away we were told by several people that we had to try the bakery. They were not wrong. Im only sad that we got there so late. So my advice is get there early. I missed out on the morning pastries but we were able to get cherry pie and a small apple caramel pie, both delicious . The ambiance was so charming. They have a gift shop attached with neat items. We purchased a really nice candle, with a really unique smell.
Service was impeccable, we were greeted when we walked in and the guy who helped me choose my dessert was really nice.
The dining area was super cozy and the large piano was super cool. They have this hallway which leads to the bathroom with a lot memorabilia. It's truly a nostalgic place which is located in Old Town. If you have the opportunity to visit Tehachapi or drive by on highway 58 stop by, you will not be disappointed .Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0Business owner information

Always enjoy stopping by this place for a weekend lunch; especially in the winter time. It feels so comfy and fun. Their soups are always so delicious and their sandwiches are equally as great! I especially like their Cuban sandwich.
I also like how efficient and friendly their staff is at taking your orders!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

The service was great. Except we ordered the Poor Boy Sandwich for sharing as it's for two persons. The meat cheese and topping were delicious but the bread was hard. The person who made it should have said something to us. We couldn't bite into the bread. They should have offered us a different kind of bread. They are close Wednesday and Thursday so they must not make fresh bread daily, we were there Tuesday afternoon. We should have spoken up about the hard bread but did not. We chose to bring the rest of the sandwich home to place into our own fresh bread slices. We have gone to this place many times for the pastries but that was the first time for a sandwich.

Oh wow I don't know what to say really this place is definitely on point. They got so many pastries to choose from I didn't even know what to grab sorry folks I didn't take a good picture of the the display with all the pastries and donuts and cakes I had a Reuben sandwich and it was so much meat on it I can only half of it so they didn't slack on the meat just a short drive from Bakersfield Best time to go is probably during the week we went on a Saturday and it was really really busy but they got our food pretty quickly so if you fill in that German Bavarian vibe this is the place to go pretty cool It was nice to talk to somebody in German for the first time since in awhile atmosphere definitely would go back again

This place is simply awesome! After eating their sandwich, I feel like I have been missing a lot in my life before. Their sandwiches are very reasonably priced and very delicious. Everything tastes fresh and I love how you can customize them to your liking. Since it was our first time, we didn't know exactly what to expect but they do have papers when you line up to customize the sandwiches however you like them - from the bread, the filling, the condiments, to the extras. My photos definitely don't do justice to their food! Their pastries and desserts and pastries are worth lining up, too! If Bakersfield would have a similar bakery in town, I would probably be there a lot of times, rotating their menu on a weekly (or even more often) basis!

When in Tehachapi, stop by this place! I love the cream puffs. They are huge and to my surprise they make minis now. Good for a little fix of whipped cream. My neices and nephew all got cookies. I ended up getting a pizza loaf for dinner that night. We reheated it in the air fyer and it fit perfectly. It was so great. The bread on the inside was so soft and I liked that the air fyer made the cheese on the outside crispy. I think I will be stopping by for another pizza loaf next time we are in town

Driving back from the desert, passed through and I was hungry, as well as my family. I ordered a sandwich with Turkey, Lettuce, Cheddar, Mayo, and Mustard with a pink lemonade. I got my food super quick and it was busy! I took one big bite into that sand-which and it was beyond delicious. I love how much turkey they put into my sand-which. There was a nice breeze in Tehachapi. All the vibes were bliss with my family and sandwich. Can't wait to go back on my next roadtrip.

You can never go wrong when you visit Kohnen's Bakery. Everything is so fresh and delicious. The breads are so amazing, when I need to get a gift I always stop by and grab some fresh baked items. The poorboy sandwich will feed a whole family. The eclairs are amazing. They make sourdough bread on Tuesdays and Saturday. Make sure to call and reserve yours because they go fast. The iced tea is my favorite in town.

Thomas & Colleen K., OwnerMar 25, 2022Previous reviewWow, two years since I have updated my review. Kohnens is still perfection in my book. I love dropping by and grabbing an ice tea, best in town for sure. The Poor Boy sandwich is what I always order it's gigantic and feeds my whole family. Super bummed they are closed on Wednesday and Thursday now. Seems to be the time I always want to stop by. I thought maybe it was due to Covid. Not sure as they still are closed those days. I always order my food ahead of time if not be prepared to stand in a long line. Word is out that this is the best place in town.
May 11, 2019Previous reviewThis is my favorite bakery of all times. Delicious sandwiches, salads, pastries and the best eclair I have ever had. They have the best ice tea in Tehachapi. This place gets very busy. Visited at 4:30pm the day before Mother's Day and not much left in dessert case. You have to come earlier in the day. We got a poor boy sandwich it feeds my whole family. If you are passing thru Tehachapi you have to pay a visit. You won't regret it.
