Roasted Turkey and stuffing plate review: 5/5.
Kinys Converse pre thanksgiving turkey dinner.
All the food was delicious and I was impressed with the amount of turkey that I received. The dressing/stuffing was good as mentioned on Priscilla's site. She brought in a guest Chef just for that dressing.
But I have to tell you what my favorite part of the whole meal was--- that corn souffle was absolutely delicious. I could eat a whole quart of that as a meal.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0Jun 30, 2016Previous reviewI was wanting to try an excellent meaty burger today, so I came to try the newly revamped Kiny's burger 2.0. I arrived on their official grand opening June 30th. It was steadily busy in there and I took a seat.
I ordered the BYOB (build your own burger). You have to be careful about how you choose to construct your burger as there is strategerie (George Bush) involved. I ordered grilled onions and mushrooms, bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato and bbq sauce. It is a type of mish mash Western burger without the onion ring
First of all this monster of a patty was well over 1/2 lb and was cooked upper medium as I asked.
The new kaiser roll was soft and held the burger perfectly. They covered the bottom of the bun with a thin bbq sauce and with the juices from the very moist burger made the bun soggy. Make sure you protect your bottom bun with either mayo or one slice of American cheese.
I threw away the lettuce (soggy), as I should have listened to Alton Brown, who said lettuce should never be on a gourmet burger, If you want a salad, go to the salad bar.
Meat: This over 1/2 lb burger was so flavorful, I compare it to the Angus burger at the Faust Tavern in New Braunfels. It needed salt and it is so messy that I couldn't apply the salt, as these burgers seem to fall apart and crumble.
I don't know why they fall apart like this, but who cares, just make sure you order it the way you want it because you won't be able to fool with it when it comes. I didn't like their bbq sauce, so I am going to bring my own next time or choose A1 to make a true Western steak burger.
Since the place was packed and I didn't want anyone staring when I try to handle this monster politely, I took a chair outside to their patio and devoured this delicious beast. Since it was between 11-1pm, I took advantage of their 15% off. They also had free samples of their chicken salad. Besides the Longhorn Cafe, this will be the only other place I will go to get a burger.Jun 3, 2016Previous reviewI'll bet you wish you had one of these cafes offering from scratch cooking in your neck of the woods. This restaurant has all your favorites and then some. Expect to find staples such as cheeseburgers, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and homemade soups.
What you will be surprised and excited to find out is they have premium deli sandwiches (corned beef, Italian melt, mouthwatering Philly steak); they also have huge, beautiful, fresh salads. How about a California Cobb? They have special hot plates of the day. I "hear tell" that you must be there on pot roast day or catfish friday.
I met a fellow Yelper there today and we were greeted and seated by the friendly staff right away. My friend got a sandwich, but I didn't even find out what kind, as we were both fixated on the huge California Cobb salad sitting in front of him, Cameras were pulled out, and it was almost too pretty to eat, and the bottom was endless.
We also tried the hand breaded chicken fried steak fingers, which were tender and had a light batter. The white gravy was perfectly creamy and smooth (no flour taste). The fries are natural cut style (not necessarily hand cut, just that style), and they were perfect for dipping in that cream gravy. The fries were dusted with a secret Kiny's seasoning with parsley, excellent.
I chose the Ruben as my sandwich but decided to change it up a bit and substituted foccacia bread for the standard marbled rye. The bread was soft and enhanced the taste of this sandwich with its hefty, juicy, lean pastrami, sauerkraut, plenty of swiss cheese and topped with house-made horseradish mayo.
I paired my sandwich with a small quinioa salad. Theirs had black beans grape tomatoes, corn, and queso fresco. I recently chose this salad at Jason's deli as my favorite new salad. There they put tiny shrimp and small diced mango in it, I found Kiny's quinioa to be a little watery. Also the quinioa to black bean ratio was too high. Each spoonful I had a mouth full of BB's.
I would like to see more beans added and half the amount of Quinioa. a little goes a long way. I would also like to see a fruit component to balance the flavors out, either mango like Jason's, diced strawberry, or canned mini mandarins. This fruit component is crucial to this dish. To negate the wateriness, I would like to see a tart and sweet component, maybe with some kind of fruit vinaigrette or balsamic vinegar, or the raspberry vinaigrette and a squeeze of lemon (sweet/tart). It is already savory and earthy from the tomato and queso fresco.
Did I mention they have a bakery in the restaurant. They make daily creme cakes, other cakes, and their decadent many flavors of designer cupcakes. They also sell Momma J's homemade cookies, which are so popular in the area, you can't walk in and buy them anymore at Momma J's.
Will return soon and work my way down the menu, especially on pot roast day....... - Melia R.San Antonio, TX3945131455Jul 16, 2016
Update: heard Kiny's is now doing only catering/dinner service. Call to order ahead. Believe baked goods available for walk-ins.
Finally stopped in to check out Kiny's. I like the way they've cuted things up - especially the red polka dot tablecloths - there's a cheerful, relaxed vibe to the place.
I went with the "best chicken fried steak" (why is this claim so frequently made?). It was good enough, and so were the mashed potatoes, but the green beans were just meh; seemed canned. Didn't photograph the nice house salad that came with the meal; it alone *should* have been my lunch.
My lunch date had the Salisbury steak, which was solidly decent, and improved with the addition of mushrooms - the onions would've been a good addition, too. The corn looked canned; I didn't even take a taste.
I took some cake to go, anticipating a food coma following my heavy lunch choice. It was moist and tasty. If you have a sweet tooth, you may love it. I'm not a huge sweets person; I could take it or leave it. I'd say the cakes were at least as good as the Nothing Bundt Cakes that are so hot right now.
The people are nice and the "home cooking" offerings are certainly welcome in the area. It's kinda like Williams Confectionery Crafts opened closer to Randolph AFB (plus salads; minus breakfast) - but not quite at the WCC level. I'll certainly return to try more of the menu items, and I sincerely hope they stay in business and refine, but I'm not ready to tell my friends to drive across town to check it out....yet.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Jul 8, 2016Updated review
First visit tonight. Won't be the last. Nice people. Really good food. Catfish was excellent. Onion rings were yummy. We'll be going back for healthier choices. Thankfully they were sold out of cupcakes. Or we'd have gotten that too! I hope they do well!

First visit here.
Turning was difficult for me. Haha. I almost drove into the grass then I notice the reflectors. Haahha. Now I know.
Waited to be seated. I didn't know you were suppose to seat yourself. I didn't see the sign on the wall by the door.
After all the online reviews I decided to come by and have lunch with my children.
The three of us ordered water.
My daughter ordered a Grilled chicken salad the chicken was great she loved it. She didn't end up eating the salad because she said it hurt to chew. (She has swimmers ears) :(
My son ordered a large wednesday special. Which was meat loaf. He asked for green beans on the side. When his food came out it had corn. Good thing I notice before he got mad. Hahahaha. Don't mess with him and his green beans. The waitress brought him out a greenbeans in a separate bowl. The meat loaf lack flavor. It was drenched with ketchup and my kids are not big ketchup fans. The meatloaf was a tad dry in some places and unflavorful. The mash potatoes were actually good. The corn and green beans were tasty. The kids love the dinner rolls.
I ordered a Cobb salad. It looked beautiful. The shreaded chicken was a little dry. It was a good serving of salad and it was amazing.
I asked for a Togo container for my daughters salad.
We went to the register and my bill was $39.xx. I really didn't look at my recipient. When we left I thought about it. So I calculated it. The Cobb was $8.99 the grilled chicken salad was $8.99 and large meatloaf $12.99
I called and told the lady I was already at Randolph afb when my daughter calculated the bill. I turned around and the lady had charged us for 3 drinks. She was very apologetic. And refunded us $5.xx
Over all experience
1 star for facilities nice clean and inviting.
1 star for service. It's ok. No big wow factor that everyone was talking about.
1/2 star. The salad was great. I will visit again.
-star for bathrooms. Didn't visit.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amanda W.East Dubuque, IL866962Jul 15, 2016
A small, local new business is obviously a family business. There are rows of square tables overlooked by the kitchen. A TV playing the local station is in the corner. The heat from outside and the open kitchen is making the small area slightly uncomfortable. The red walls were clearly put up by a novice as the refusal to serve sign has sloppy red paint splatters. The cash register is on a counter of chaos with random items and a dirty carpet behind the register. There is also a refrigerator that looks a little chaotic too.
None of this really matters (except for the chaos, but they're just getting started and hopefully will organize soon. The food was called in at 1630 and I was told there was a 30 min wait. It was ready when I got there at 1654. The bakery case had 5 cakes and the young waitress sliced a big piece while wearing a food disposable glove- which I appreciate. I ordered Philly cheesesteak with bacon ranch pasta salad. The pasta was lacking in flavor, ranch and bacon. I ordered the catfish sh special which came with Luke warm fries, good pickly coleslaw and two hush puppies (which were dry and slightly gritty). The catfish sold me, it was a good temperature when I got home in 15 minutes. Too bad the fries weren't as fresh bc they had a good seasoning. The fish was moist and good flavoring and plentiful. I also ordered onion rings, but somehow the waitress didn't order that. She seems slightly overwhelmed with 2 tables and me.
I'll try this place again and support my local business.
I appreciated the 10% military discount.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Pamela P.Cibolo, TX66673May 13, 2016
They just opened yesterday at this location. I called in my order for a regular size portion of the fried catfish. Portion sizes are hugh! I could decide which chocolate cupcake to get, so I got 6! Friendly, fast service. The food is best I've tasted in a long time near Randolph! I will definitely be back!

Our second visit didn't disappoint. I had the hot tuna sandwich with ranch avocado pasta salad and the hubs had the cheeseburger club with fries. Both were delicious. My tuna was nicely toasted with melted cheese, tomato slices, and red onion. The tuna had hard boiled eggs in it. Yum! The pasta salad was tasty with pieces of bacon. The cheeseburger club was nicely toasted on sliced bread with lettuce and tomato. The hubs really enjoyed it. The fries were good. We also left with several snicker doodle cookies, frosted sugar cookies and strawberry/red velvet cake. All so delicious! I especially loved the snickerdoodles. If you buy six or more items from their display case you get a 10% discount plus a 10% discount for military! Say what!?! 20%! I'll take it! Again, the young ladies running the show were all so nice and attentive. I may become a regular here.
Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 27, 2016Previous reviewLoved our first visit. Stormy (the coolest name ever!) was our server and she was attentive, pleasant and had the warmest smile. I had the Rueben sandwich with Italian pasta salad, the hubs had the turkey avocado pesto sandwich with fries and my son had a BYOB cheese burger with fries. We had fried pickles for an appetizer.
They don't have a children's menu but when I asked if they could make the burger smaller than an adult burger she said no problem. They even adjusted the price down. Nice! The fried pickles were delicious. Freshly fried and not too greasy. My Rueben was delicious and pasta salad good. You can choose bacon ranch or Italian when ordering the pasta salad side. My husband liked his turkey avocado except for the pesto. He would have rather had it without the pesto. He ended up trading a half of his sandwich for mine. He loved my Rueben and I thought his turkey sandwich was delicious but then I like pesto. The fries were nicely done and tasty. We ended up leaving with 6 slices of cake. They were $4.25 a slice. A little pricey but moist and delicious so we thought it worthy. Since we bought 6 slices of cake we were offered a 10% discount on the total bill. Yay! They are closed on Sundays and Mondays. I am so happy we found this place. We'll be back for more! - Erica H.San Antonio, TX34620Jun 8, 2016
I took my grandparents to Kiny's after reading a lot of good reviews. My expectations were definitely too high and I've come to the conclusion that people hand out five stars WAY too easily. For me, five stars should ONLY be reserved for absolutely perfect meals/environments/service/location/etc. This little place was nice and quaint, but far from perfect.
First of all, I have to say that we had a great waitress. I forgot her name, but she was pleasant, nice and kept my grandfather happy (hard to do). We got a little of everything on the menu so I was able to sample quite a bit. The dinner salads were a good size. I had the bacon ranch pasta salad and it had way too much ranch dressing on it. It tasted just like shells and ranch, it didn't seem like a pasta salad at all (Hearthstone Bakery has an amazing bacon ranch pasta salad that is made properly and I found myself wishing for it while eating this one).
For an entree, I got the monster philly cheesesteak. Making it a "monster" adds jalapenos and bacon. The sandwich was good for the most part, aside from the mayo that they add. The menu states that there is a "touch of mayo" but there's definitely more than that when it comes out. I had to end up wiping most of it off. Mayo on a philly is weird to begin with, I should have requested that they just X it altogether. The jalapenos were sliced too large for the sandwich so I took most of them off or diced them up to incorporate them into the steak and cheese myself. I feel like this should have been done already and I hate having to do some of the work when I go out to eat. The fries that came with this were obviously from a bag and not at all tempting. I usually eat all of my fries because I love french fries but I left half of them on the plate.
My grandma got the fried catfish plate and the fish was cooked beautifully. I thought it tasted good and she liked it as well. Her side of green beans looked to be from a can though and they were so salty that she didn't eat them, so that was disappointing. My grandpa got the chicken fried steak and while it initially looked big on the plate, we quickly realized that most of it was just breading and he was not happy. The steak was also really thin and the corn was from a can, it appeared. He did really like the unsweet tea though, which is a big deal because he is so picky about tea. They also sell cupcakes, cakes (thought the cashier had no idea what the flavors were and said they get them frozen) and Momma J's cookies.
The three of us definitely did not leave hungry so it wasn't terrible, but there are some things they need to improve on and work out. I genuinely hope they do and improve the freshness of some of the food because I always want to see small business succeed.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi Erica! Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate hearing the good and the bad so we know what needs attention. What day and time was your visit so I know who to speak with.
Everyone working should know all the desserts. Most in the case is made from scratch, some of the cakes are special ordered and made by The Cheesecake Factory so yes, the come frozen to preserve freshness.
We've never had a complaint about the chicken fried steak being mostly breading. We hand tenderize our cuts of steak and they are hand breaded right when ordered so I'm not sure what went wrong with it but I'll figure it out.
Anyway, I'll hope you'll come in and give us another try. Please let me know the day and time of this visit.
Thanks,

I'm giving this place 3 stars. The food was good and the service was fantastic. It's just the wait time that it took to get our food was outrageous. The waitress was very apologetic but it seriously took about 30 mins, maybe longer. I ordered the chicken fried steak, hubby got the club sandwich and my daughter got a grilled cheese. 30 mins +

Just a follow up from our 1st visit. We returned last night for their Salisbury steak night. I enjoyed that, corn, mashed potatoes, Mac n cheese and a house salad. Another yummy meal. The hubby and daughter both had the club and liked it. We had fries and their pasta salad. The pasta salad was great. We also had a "dirt & worm" cupcake, it was relish. And the worms are 100% organic (my 18 mth old loved them.) So another night and we weren't disappointed. Priscilla is awesome as is her daughter. They are 100% hands on.
Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 14, 2016Previous reviewEverything was yummy. Small quaint little place (use to be the old Cooter Browns Tavern.) was clean, ppl friendly and the food was good. I had the chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn and a salad. Totally yummy and a large portion. Hubby had the Philly with fries ( the onions/bell peppers could have been cooked a little more,) but otherwise it was good. Our daughter had the club and fries, it was good & rather large. We ended up with left overs! Purchased 6 cupcakes and can not wait to devour them!
