These guys are the coolest, friendliest, dentists in town. Hands down.
George and Jesus made my visit one of the most enjoyable office visits I've ever had. They were EXTRA careful to ensure that I wouldn't be paying any fees out of pocket and triple checked that I would. They were quick but gentle with my teeth and made the experience really fun. They even through in a freeby fluoride topical application which they didn't need to do but did anyway. Because they are AWESOME.
As long as my insurance is covered by them I won't be going to any other dentists in the area ever.
I believe Drs. Kwan and Keatts retired are no longer practicing but their new dentist (she is an Indian woman, I forgot her name) did my cleaning and she is equally spectacular.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 7, 2011
Dr Kwan gives the appearance of being a nice enough guy, friendly and informative. However, that's not all I'm looking for in a dentist. His facility is old with archaic equipment. Even the sink that you have to spit in was kinda crusty. He does his own teeth cleaning and he doesn't spend enough time to do it. There's some obligatory scraping but in what felt like about, 15 minutes the whole thing was over.
After a couple of visits, I found myself avoiding a third one, and stopped going.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0Business owner information

Please check Henry's latest posting. Henry finally sees a new dentist 18 months after he had his cleaning done by Dr. Kwan. Amazingly, his new dentist is in New York! Seems like no local Palo Alto, Los Altos dentist is good enough for Henry! While he sing praises about his new dentist, he failed to mention that she did not find anything wrong with the cleaning, the check up and care that he received from Dr. Kwan 18 months ago. Honestly, without knowing it, Henry is paying his respect to Dr. Kwan by saying that his teeth are in excellent condition having cleaned last from Dr. Kwan's office! Thank you, Henry. Henry's screen name is " won -ton, not now ". If he can see that won- ton spell backward is not-now, why can't he see that good dental condition now is good care from 18 months ago?

I have been going to Dr. Kwan for the past 8 years and I will never leave him as long as he continues his practice. Not only is he courteous and professional, but he's good at his job (the most important thing!) In the 8 years I've been going to him, I've received bi-annual checkups, 2 crowns, couple of cavity fillings, and a mouth guard.
Also, I never have to wait for my appointment, ever and there has never been any issue with billing, invoicing, etc. Marlene at the front desk is quick and smart (sadly, something I can't say for a lot of offices) and knows her stuff.
Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Kwan!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Stephanie S.Pittsburgh, PA12265Apr 3, 2008
Dr. Kwan is such a breath of fresh air compared with the last dentist I had in Chicago,** he's honest and friendly, and really cares about you and your teeth. I went in for a cleaning and he found that my white fillings were cracking, so he had me come in to replace a couple of them. I have crappy dental insurance, so his staff had my insurance pre-authorize the treatments so I wouldn't get dinged.
Since I switched back from white fillings to silver (they're cheaper and last longer, apparently), I had really terrible sensitivity, so Dr. Kwan fixed the bite, recommended that I take Advil to get rid of the pain. I was a bit skeptical, but he told me to try the Advil and come back in a week for a followup to make sure things were ok.
And he was right! No more pain. I'm just sad that my new dental insurance doesn't include him in my network. :( He's the best!
**Backstory: After waiting for almost an hour for a filling, her assistant ended up fusing two of my molars together with glue and the dentist left a big scar on the corner of my mouth by accident while trying to separate the teeth with floss. I had a job interview the next day, and I had to go in looking like I had the herp. Not cool.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Anderson L.Orange, CA9054712Apr 30, 2012
Having been through many dentists over my lifetime, I can honestly say Dr. Kwan is the most gentle, professional, competent dental provider I have worked with. He has an effective way of putting everything into layman's terms and making sure you are comfortable before proceeding. He is also very sensitive to how you are feeling during the procedure to make there is no pain. If and when there is a bit of pain associated, he will gently give you a heads-up before hand and minimize it.
What I am most impressed about above and beyond all of the above is Dr. Kwan's integrity. There have been times when dental work could have been done, but Dr. Kwan has acted out of my best interest and recommended delaying or not proceeding if not necessary. In the rare occasion that something needs to be fixed or there is discomfort after the fact, an appointment is readily scheduled and he fixes the issue. You cannot buy this type of honesty and patient service. It is inherent to Dr. Kwan's character, which I really appreciate.
One other nice tidbits: I appreciate how appointment times are so prompt. I don't recall one time I had to sit in the waiting room for Dr. Kwan. His staff gets me prepared right away, and as long as I show up on time, there has never delay.
Also wanted to acknowledge Dr. Kwan's head assistant Jesus, who is absolutely great at what he does. He always takes extra time and care to make sure good work is done. He is awesome.
I have been visiting Dr. Kwan for 6-7 years now. I whole-heartedly endorse and recommend Dr. Kwan with a soaring 5 star review.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Takeshi S.Mountain View, CA3672Oct 1, 2010
Having read the reviews here, I decided to give Dr. Kwan a try. Good thing I did! The staff at Los Altos Dental Group are top notch, professional, friendly, and go out of their way.
The office and the equipment they use are not the brand new leading edge technology, but the level of service more than makes up for it.
I had a crown that had chipped and was bothering me and wanted to get a new one. I travel a lot on business and sometimes it is difficult for me to schedule things like new crowns where it may take two or more appointments to complete. In fact, Monday before the Thursday I had my appointment, it looked like I had to go on a business trip. So I called up Marlene at the front desk to reschedule. No problem. She happily reschedule me. But then come Tuesday, the trip was off. So I called up Marlene again, and my original time was still open so she put me right back where I was... Happily.... no complaints... Very nice.
The day of the appointment, Dr. Kwan was very informative, he described what he was going to do and why he was going to do it that way. Painless and almost pleasant. He took the old crown off, took a mold, made a temporary crown and installed it.
The next nice experience I had was two Mondays later. That week, I had an appointment on Thursday to put the permanent crown on. But on Monday, as I was eating lunch, the temporary came off. I called up, yes, Marlene to have the temp put back on. We scheduled for Tuesday late morning. The next day I go in to the office to have the Temp put back on, but they had called the lab to rush the permanent crown. So, I got my permanent crown on Tuesday instead of Thu. Saving me one trip to the office.
Now that is what I call service.
Dr. Kwan and the staff at Los Altos Dental Group.... highly recommended.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Lina W.Palo Alto, CA1682514Sep 28, 2011Purchased a Yelp Deal
Dr. Kwan is really the best dentist that I have seen. He is kind, understanding, and has excellent knowledge and skills on teeth work!
The first time I visited Dr. Kwan is for a simple cleaning. I had some stain on the teeth, the previous dentist didn't do any thing about it. Dr. Kwan patiently cleaned them all out.
The previous dentist wanted to make a load of money out of me, and suggested me to do all kinds of dental work. Dr. Kwan took a look at of my X-Ray, patiently explained to me what are the problems, and what are the have-to-do work, what are the nice to do work, and what work has to be done right away. He knows how to take priorities for the patient.
When doing dental work with Dr. Kwan, he always explain to me what he is doing, and why he is doing, and he is always very gentle. Each step he made sure that I'm not feeling uncomfortable, unlike a lot of "butcher" dentist.
My experience with Dr. Kwan is absolutely all positive. Would love to recommend him to anyone. Thank you Dr. Kwan!!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Helena K.Mountain View, CA677Jul 12, 2012
I became their new patient a few weeks ago. One of my teeth has been quite sensitive for a while, so I made a regular appointment to take care of it. Unfortunately, about two days after making the appointment (which was scheduled for about two weeks later) the tooth started to hurt like hell. I called the office again and they squeezed me in the next day to see what the problem is. Although I was an 'extra' patient that day, everyone was very friendly and really taking care of me.
I needed some treatment asap, so they again squeezed me in a few days later. They even called me the day before my appointment to let me know that there was a cancellation and I can come in earlier. Very nice!
Although their equipment does not look like the most modern and fancy, I do not mind as far as Dr. Kwan can do a great job with it, which is definitely the case. He is extremely gentle and trying to make you as comfortable as possible during the procedure.
I am a very curious person always wanting to know every detail of what's going on and Dr. Kwan and his assistants never seem bothered by my questions. They use pictures and wall posters to explain everything as clearly as possible.
Dr. Kwan is also very open to discussion which is great (he for example suggested that I take antibiotics, which I did not want, so we agreed that he gives me a prescription and I only take them if it becomes really necessary, which luckily was not the case).
All of Dr. Kwan's assistants are very neat and friendly and have a strong understanding of the business. It's weird but I am kind of looking forward to visit my dentist again.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amal K.Mountain View, CA01610Jul 18, 2013
My experience wasn't great, but the reason I'm leaving 1 star review is because after deciding I was no longer going to go here again, I called to ask for a copy of my xrays to give to my new dentist. The receptionist told me there was a $25 to get a copy of my OWN xrays!! That's ridiculous! They're xrays are not digital, so they cannot email them to you/ your new dentist. Its totally obnoxious because it ensures that if you've ever gotten xrays from here, you will only come back here for dental work!!

To me getting my teeth cleaned is a necessary evil because I have so much sensitivity. Dr. Kwan is the best; he is able to clean my teeth without causing any pain. He is kind and genuinely cares about his patients. He also advises me on how to treat my sensitivity issue.
