I had Kellogg come in to paint the exterior of my 2-story home. It was the sloppiest paint job I'd ever seen.
Instead of a regular crew, this guy apparently picks up 'day workers' here and there. The guys he brought with him looked like a bunch of ex-cons, drunks and other questionable characters. They were rude and hostile to us, no matter how kind we were to them. These untrained workers wound up making a mess of my 100-year-old Victorian:
First off, they didn't bother to scrape any of the old, loose paint off first, so naturally, the paint they slapped over it began peeling within a year. There were areas where paint was applied so thinly that you could see the old paint color below. In other places, they left large spots totally unpainted (a roofer brought this to our attention months later). These slobs threw things all over the place, carelessly stepped on objects and broke them, etc. The entire job was chaotic mess!
Kellogg himself is very argumentative person, defending his inept men and their sloppy work. Any time we'd point out something his guys were doing wrong - rather than acknowledging and correcting it - he'd start an argument with us instead! It was an extremely unpleasant and frustrating situation all around.
The finished product was a mediocre paint job that required us to hire another painter just to come and do remedial repairs and touching-up on the mess Kellogg and his crew left us with.
I will never deal with this unprofessional "painter" and his unskilled workers again.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0Business owner information

Hi, Can you please tell me the contract number and when the work was performed? We have no record of your name in our data base. - Thanks

I've hired Tom Kellogg many many times in the last 10 years. By now he must've painted every surface in my Saugerties house. It's getting harder and harder to find an appointment with him because he's in such demand, but it's well worth reserving him in advance. His work is impeccable. He is also incredibly nice. Wish I could find other contractors who take as much care in their work as Tom Kellogg does.

I have a suggestion for the other reviewer here that was so pleased with this company's exterior work that they're considering having them back to do the interior..........DON'T.
I had them do only some of my interior (All ceilings and the walls in one haliway and one livingroom). I was not impressed with their supposed "years" of experience. They had to redo the ceiling in the Office and Bathroom THREE (3) times....Really? .....Yes Really. So sparse was the application of paint (that I was paying for) that complete coverage was not met until the third time. On top of that.....They said they could not see that the paint was not completely covering the ceiling. My 94 yr old grandmother could have seen that without her glasses. That was argument number 1 of 2 in only two and a half days of them invading my home. Actual loud back and forth raised voice arguing. The second argument was over how messy they were being painting around my recessed lighting and that the paint was getting on the exterior of the fixtures.....which by the way they didn't bother to mask off.
No contractor wants to hear about how you know how to do what they do....But till this writing I never divulged to them that back in my working days (before I became disabled) I in fact was a professional painter in addition to many other household repair and restoration job titles. In my day.....Over two decades of working inside and out of customers homes I NEVER ....EVER had an argument with a customer let alone two arguments. I NEVER had to advertise......My work and My "customer is always right" (Whether it was true or not) attitude kept my business thriving.
Another little surprise..........written into the contract and referred to as 'DOOR SLABS" was the fact the the painting job did NOT include any DOORS. Who the hell makes painting doors when your painting the rest of a room extra??? No doubt the responsibility was on me to read the fine print.....which I copped to when I asked about when were they going to paint the door (slabs) ugh! and was told the doors would be extra. That is just some cheap ass bull if you ask me.
All that being said.....and trust me I could go on with other things I was not impressed with but I Think anyone reading this will get it even if I stop here.
I would summarize with this list
1. Killer presentation to nail down the job (Talked the talk)
2. Showed up on time each day
3. Cleaned up completely everyday
4. Showed what appeared to me to be one to two years
experience at most
5. Had full blown argument with me TWICE
6. Sloppy job returning the few Items needed to be moved
to their original location
7. Very cheap with the amount of paint applied
Talking the talk.............110%
Walking the walk......... 70%
If Your happy with 70% satisfaction and willing to argue to get what your paying for and all the other things written about above.......These are your painters....Good Luck!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

After submitting the painting proposal, which outlined what was included, what was not included, materials and the steps to be taken he wanted to negotiate the cost with me, as a business our price is firm, however I did lower the estimated cost for Mark. A couple of weeks prior to starting the project Mark had asked if we could re schedule the start date, so I did reschedule the start date after moving a few jobs around that had already been scheduled. From the beginning I was accommodating, polite, respectful and professional. The project consisted of painting a bedroom ceiling, bathroom ceiling, office ceiling, living room ceiling, hallway ceiling, kitchen ceiling, living room walls, hallway walls, door casing/frames in the hallway and living room, baseboard trim in the hallway and living room and kitchen cabinets.
On the first day of the project we did not complete painting the bathroom and office ceilings and I was aware that they each needed another coat of paint before leaving that day. The second day when we arrived at the job Mark raised his voice and stated how the ceilings in those two rooms did not look good and alleged that we were skimping on the paint that was applied to these two ceilings. I explained that the ceilings in those two rooms where not yet complete and that was the first thing we were going to work on that day, also that the paint is applied in accordance to manufacture specs and the correct mil thickness.
Our company has documented that some of the recessed lighting fixtures and other areas of the home had preexisting paint splatters and drips prior to us painting from a previous painter.
The contract that Mark signed was in number 11 times new roman font and on the front page clearly stated that door slabs where not included. They were not included, as I was told at the initial estimate that they did not need to be painted. The notes from my initial estimate state that and the estimate I submitted to Mark stated that too.
We did not charge extra for the abundant amount of pet hair found behind the living room furniture that we vacuumed up prior to painting the living room walls. I did throw the new drop clothes out after that project, because of the amount of pet hair on them. - Mike R.Manhattan, NY2024Aug 26, 2013First to Review
Excellent, excellent, excellent service, quality and trust. Painting the exterior of a 100+ year-old home is no easy task, but Kellogg's did the job quickly, perfectly and according to their all-business contract. We'd hire them again in a second (maybe to paint our interior next!).

Excellent work, fair prices and very professional and reliable. We've used them multiple times, for both interior and exterior jobs, and have always been happy with the results. We recommend without reservation!
