Let me start out by saying that I am not the same Sushi aficionado as many as my fellow elites but I thought that KAWA Sushi was absolutely first class!!! This restaurant was spacious, bright with nice background music paying all evening.
Everything is ordered via two sheets of paper... A kitchen menu and a sushi menu. I was very impressed with the amount of food on the Kitchen menus as this makes it very easy for a group to dine there and not have to be a sushi person.
We started by ordering the vegetable spring rolls and gyoza, pork gyoza and fried wontons... Everything was delicious. My only concern here was the amount of food they gave us... It was enormous. I suggested that they cut it in half as it's all you can eat so people could easily get more if they wanted it. We also had edamame, Udan and Miso soup... again the bowl of Udan soup was clearly enough for a table to share.
Now the Sushi, sashimi and rolls... Salmon, Tuna, white tuna, yellow fin, crispy tuna and salmon... multiple times. It was fresh, tasty, good temperature and you cold keep ordering more. (I think they have an hour and a half rule that they probably enforse during peek dinner times.) They also make it very clear that if you leave over large amounts of food... you will be charged the "a la carte" price for the leftovers.
The staff was terrific!!! Clearly they work as a team so we never had to wait for a particular person... they all served and bussed the tables.
Dessert was special, OREO Tempura, Banana Tempura and a dish of Vanilla Ice Cream. Do I really need to elaborate on the Oreo part of this???
I definitely recommend KAWA Sushi with a suggestion of coming with at least four people... and make sure your all very hungry.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 16, 2014
Seriously people?
Where did your servers learn how to speak to customers?!?!
So let me start from the beginning...
My friend's family and mine, totaled 8 people. We say down quickly enough...at first glance the ambiance is cute. There's a little "bridge" when you first walk in and a koi pond that kids love.
The first thing we were asked is if we were ordering all you can eat, of course we replied yes.
So we sit down and order a bunch of the appetizer dishes, most of which were freshly made...but came out at such a speed that we couldn't fit all of them on the table. We literally had to divvy up a plate just to fit what the server was bringing to the table.
Sushi/Sashimi...is fine...I mean, as long as it's fresh, what can you do to make that stuff stand out? Oh the thing that DID stand out was the soy sauce and wasabi were both weak as hell.
Finally get to thinking about dessert as we're trying finish off some of our last orders, so we ask for their dessert order form.
First thing the witch of a server says is, "you better eat everything or we will charge you".
SERIOUSLY...I mean SERIOUSLY?!?!
Learn some effing manners.
Obviously this POS joint is crossed off my list.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Diana L.Hicksville, NY182611Oct 20, 2013
I got the Maki Combo C (Tuna, yellowtail, salmon roll 6 pieces each, miso soup & green salad)
Fresh tasting sushi, good miso soup. I actually ate the salad which I almost never do since most places offer dehydrated, wilted lettuce. I ordered take out so I can't fairly comment on the service but the hostess was pleasant and polite.
I didn't see the whole restaurant but there seemed to be some nice decor and I really liked the fountain they had up front.
I'll definitely be back to dine in.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 568128857Jan 26, 2014
Who doesn't love an all you can eat sushi place, that also includes hot food?
I would love this place if it didn't take about 45 minutes to get my food. They have a great selection and the hot food is pretty decent. Better than the sushi, unfortunately though. They have some great specialty rolls, but the fish isn't fresh and they don't clean the salmon skin, so yes, you will have a mouth full of scales.
I've been to this place twice and after my last encounter, I will not be back. Our "quick" dinner turned into a 3 hour dinner and we only ordered food twice. We had to wait at least 45 minutes to an hour to get each order and they didn't even give us the full order.
Very disappointed - the one AYCE place that I don't want to go back to.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 18, 2014Updated review
Service got a lot better, and the portions a lot smaller and manageable. Quality I have got to say improved and the sashimi were cut a lot better than the first time I had it. There's lots of seating, reason being the bad location, soo little foot traffic.
I think they listened to many of the bad reviews early in the business and fixed many of the things that were wrong but this place is now a worthy sushi AYCE spot.
They have added a lot of cooked items from the kitchen onto the menu so it has a great balance of cooked food and sushi.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 10, 2013Previous reviewAYCE sushi but meh experience/quality, however the cheapest I've seen so far for 20 dollars
The sashimi were cut soo thin, it was hard to eat. Not satisfying enough. So 10 pieces of Salmon sashimi equates to 3 actual pieces I believe. The squid were cut into spaghetti strands, It was a weird presentation and slimy as hell.
Cooked food comes in large portions, definitely made dinner a lot more of a challenge. General Tso's Chicken you would think you get 1-3 pieces. I think like 12 pieces came out. and we got some fried rice, which came in a huge mound. Usually Ice cream is 1 small scoop, I got 2 Giant Scoops. I think they're trying to kill me.
Wish I had more room for sushi..
The service was good though. They were always attentive and refilled my water numerous times. But I rather pay the extra few dollars for the fresher stuff. - Nov 7, 2014
Another player in the AYCE sushi division, Kawa serves the New Hyde Park area quite well. Very reasonably priced at $19.95 including beverage, Kawa has a nice assortment of options on the AYCE platform - I can't speak to the a la carte menu as I've never tried it, but the food I've had has consistently been quite good, plenty of options both cooked and raw
Like most of these places, the service is a tad aloof but it's never unfriendly...I guess my only complaints would be that there's a $1 upcharge for brown rice - stupid, but not a deal breaker...also, not quite sure why the shumai come out crispy and obviously friend when it's supposed to be a steamed dish - i will inquire one of these days
otherwise a solid choice for those looking to either binge or explore new items without breaking the bankHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sep 6, 2013First to Review
New sushi restaurant with all you can eat for $19.99 on weekdays and $21.99 on weekends. It's amazing how cheap this place is - this price includes beverages (non-alcoholic I believe), lots of choices of dishes from the kitchen AND dessert! I went with 3 friends, so we were able to try a lot of the menu. Favorites included: volcano roll (deep fried), rainbow roll, red clam sashimi, salmon sashimi and fried oreos. I heard that the pad thai is really good as well, but we didn't want to fill up on noodles when there was so much sushi to be had. Definitely coming back here next time I have a sushi craving.

Came here on a whim yesterday. We drive past this place constantly and always wonder how it is (we love love love Sushi Village and very rarely go anywhere else), We decided to just suck it up and try it, and I am very glad we did. So let's get down to basics:
Kitchen Menu: A LOT more on here than my beloved Sushi Village. They have some Chinese dishes as well as the Japanese dishes. I like that a lot. The only thing that they didn't have that I would continue going to Sushi Village for is the Kalbi beef.
General Tso's Chicken- VERY good. Nice and crispy and lots of sauce. One order comes with a generous portion as well!
Chicken Lo Mein- Delicious! Nicely cooked and very tasty
Beef Teriyaki- Too many onions, but the beef itself was very tasty
Goyza- They have both Pork and Veggie, which were really good! I love veggie dumplings and was very happy to see them on the menu. They were not super fried, just a little bit and they were REALLY good.
Edamame- Good, not super salty which I like.
Kani Salad- Not terrible, but they amount of caviar on it was a bit much for me. If you don't like caviar much, don't order this, there is a TON on here.
Veggie Spring Rolls- Very good, on par with Sushi Village.
The Sushi- Good! The plates were really pretty. They do what Sushi Village does though, they pick and choose what to give you. This kind of sucks because I really like rolls that do not have sauce or are not fried, and those are all the ones they decided on giving us, which meant I barely had any. The Salmon and Avocado roll that I had was really yummy though and the presentation was nice.
Dessert- They have the Oreo and Banana Tempura that Sushi Village has. They also have Strawberry Ice Cream, which Sushi Village does NOT have and I was a huge fan. The only thing, if you order the Oreo Tempura, it is ONE Oreo per order (Sushi Village give you several per order). But they put a chocolate sauce over it which was really nice.
The price is the same here as Sushi Village, but I believe here drinks are included. I really enjoyed the food here and will definitely be back. I think this is a good place if you want something slightly different than your normal Sushi place.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 12708563800Jan 21, 2015Updated review
The Quick: So sad to say Kawa has closed.. It was my favorite spot to get unlimited sushi and sushimi. Plus it was BYOB with no corkage fee... RIP
Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Feb 1, 2014Previous reviewAMAZING sushi and best price in the area! The all you can eat sushi is the best deal in town, everything is fresh, tasty, and the service is quick. It's not the type of place you would take a first date or anything since it's not overly fancy or impressive, but the sushi speaks for itself.
A must try if you are in long island and just want great yet inexpensive sushi.
