Q:
Is it an easy walk to the monument and/or museums from here with a 7 and 8 year old?
A:
Yes. It's one of the closest hotels to the National Mall which has the monuments and museum. There are sidewalks the entire way and the streets are easily crossable. It's still a little bit of a walk so take comfortable shoes.

What metro station is best to get to this hotel?
A:
Metro Center is what I always use. It's two blocks away. J.W. Marriott is south and west of Metro Center. Good luck.

First time in DC and we enjoyed our stay at JW Marriott. We were there for just an overnight stay and there was a medical conference there but they kindly gave us an upgrade to a corner room with a slight view of the Washington monument. It's much better going to visit the monument.
The room was quiet and clean, bed was comfortable, bathroom was a bit small, safe is in the last drawer in the dresser, robe and slippers, small fridge. I liked that both sides of the night stand had a charger. A lot of hotels, it's only on one side.
The lounge was closed and they didn't offer complimentary breakfast for platinum+ but the destination fee, you get a daily $37 credit at 1331 bar & lounge or the breakfast place on the first floor, you just have to charge to the room.
We stopped by 1331 bar to get a drink but it was super busy there so we ended up coming back after dinner and it was much better then.
We didn't know they had turn down service and when we came back, it was a nice surprise. My husband got a nice note, chocolates, ear plugs and eye mask, extra water bottles, they pulled back curtains and had the room ready for bedtime.
I would say the check-in person could have done a better job at telling us a little bit about the hotel and didn't tell us about the destination fee benefits. We ended up stopping by the front desk later to ask about breakfast options and were given the destination fee card details.
We liked the hotel a lot given all the bad reviews but we were only there for a night so maybe our experience was better since it was short.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Harper B.San Carlos, CA981Apr 4, 2024
I don't take this review lightly, having stayed at the property more than a dozen times over the past decade. But this property is no where close to Marriott standards. I can't believe the 5 star Elite review immediately below.
First, the elevator are a huge issue. For at least the last 5 stays (all multiple nights), the elevators had two huge issues: (1) repeated maintenance failures for long periods of time and (2) are too slow and old to cover the number of guests and rooms.
Plumbing has been a huge issue recently. Maintenance crews were constantly being called to numerous rooms on my floor in my last visit, and my co-worker had waste water came up thru his bathroom sink. The room next to me called maintenance 4 times in a single day.
I laugh at the prior review saying they were "greeted" at the door when checking in. They don't even know if you are a repeat customer, and primarily rely upon location for guests.
Also, they are completely unreliable for room service. On multiple occasions they didn't pick up at all or said the wait time was 2-3 hours.
In addition the rooms and shared spaces are very outdated. But that's clear from pictures and other reviews.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 12, 2024
Stayed here for a recent business trip.
Positives: Super clean. My room had an updated bathroom. All staff that I encountered were friendly and helpful (at all hours of the day too! I checked out at 330 am!) Great views! Within walking distance of the national mall.
Negatives: I feel like hotels in this area always run on the pricey side. You are charged a destination fee. They give you food credit, but the one restaurant wasn't open during my stay, and the other opens at 430. TV didn't have many channels.
Also, I don't know what to say about their elevator system. Found it strange you enter your floor on the outside, and then it tells you the bay. The inside of the elevator had no buttons.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Nov 11, 2023
It pains me to write this because the hotel was decent and accommodating (hence the 2 stars) except when I mentioned having bites. Called and the lady was accusatory and took my name and room number then hung up saying someone would get back to me. It's been 10 days and still no call back to discuss after I came home and we confirmed bed bugs and had to pay a couple grand to exterminate our house.
Otherwise the hotel was a fantastic location. It was helpful on a work trip that I also coupled with a family trip. Accommodating for those with disabilities. They allowed an early check in and a late check out which was helpful with an older guest and a child younger than her 5years old. Very close to the Museum of National History (and the Mall in general) and the National children's museum as well as the White House.
The hotel breakfast buffet is reasonable and has many options and the kids menu is the best I've seen with healthy options not just pasta and nuggets. It is a massive hotel that is perfect for large functions and celebrations. Beautiful views from the windows.
I've just never had a bug issue before and am disappointed in how they've handled addressing it. If it wasn't for the bugs I would've given them 4 stars. So if you don't get bit, you'll have a great time with this hotel and locationHelpful 5Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 1 - Nov 29, 2023
For a last minute choice, JW Marriott delivered on customer service!
I paid for a 2-night stay that costed $519.46. Upon arrival, I got checked in and given the option to create a membership with their hotel to receive points every time I visit one of their establishments. Although I don't see myself making great use of this perk, it's nice that they offer this for those who are avid travelers.
In addition, when you are checking into the hotel, you are given a paper that recommends you to events nearby the area, including the Spy Museum and the Monuments by Moonlight Tour. I ended up going to the latter, and it's a worthy trip if you want a brief excursion around D.C.
Every employee was exceptionally gracious and patient whenever I needed further explanation on certain things. They're present 24/7 as well, so when I had to leave at 5 in the morning, there was a lady who was happy to check out my room. This also refers to the valet, who are also available day & night, and give you a card with their number that you must use in order to retrieve your vehicle again. When I left in the early morning, it only took about 10 minutes for my car to come out.
If you choose this hotel, you'll be greeted by good hygiene. I can't recall anything that wasn't clean. Its location is fantastic, with it being walking distance from some of the most iconic locations in D.C, from the National African American Museum to the White House. It's suitable for anybody, solo travelers, couples, families, etc. They have amenities such as a breakfast/lunch restaurant on the bottom floor, a bar, gym, and conference rooms.
Their hotel is the first one I've been to that has a unique way of using elevators. You'd have to choose the floor number you want to go to first, then an elevator will open that sends you to that exact floor. So, no other people should be crowding over an elevator and pressing multiple buttons, with you having to wait patiently till you get to your stop. Every time I used one at Marriott, I never had to be waiting on anybody else.
The guest room I stayed in had a king-sized bed that was honestly a little rough to sleep on. I'm more used to my softer bed back home, and this one was just a tad too hard that I struggled to get quality sleep. Plus, none of the outlets on my side of the bed were working at all, and I switched between different plugs too. I had to resort to charging my things on my family member's side of the bed, which was inconvenient.
I never saw a safe compartment either, which can make some visitors feel concerned about leaving their things unattended without one. Normally, that's where I'd keep my laptop, but without it, I left it underneath the extra pillows in the closet. Thankfully, it wasn't stolen.
This is a nitpick, but I really didn't like the door to the bathroom because it made me feel like anyone could still hear my business from the outside. It was also difficult to close at times.
While I did have some qualms, that doesn't take away from it being an excellent place to stay. Some of my concerns could be more personal, and the true problems can be fixed with some extra attention that I trust the employees will attend to.
I was rushing to find the best hotel to stay at in D.C, and I found it. That's all I needed, a place to stay and rest my head- and JW Marriott delivered on that.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - James H.Irvine, CA433290276Jan 27, 20245 check-ins
Great views, outdated rooms and bizarre experience for the cost. Location is amazing, but be warned, it looks as outdated as it is. We found that while the location and view were great, the customer experience, hotel amenities, onsite facilities are all a very far cry from what a JW should be.
Checkin was easy enough, and I asked for an upgrade which I seldom do, and was given a unique room. The room was an ADA room, which is great for those in a wheelchair, and most people typically. I - in particular don't love nor is it easy for me to get into a tub for a shower so I was a little dissatisfied by not being asked if that type of room would work. Notably - ADA rooms also have shorter countertops which is difficult for my back but again, this is unique to me and not indicative of what most might care about.
During initial review of the room, the view of the monument was..: monumental! The TV was however broken (this is actually a very common issue at Marriott hotels btw). I asked for maintenance to resolve while I was at dinner, and instead they said it was fixed and marked it done because they didn't want to deal with it. The option proposed was a new room, which I obliged, only to find I was downgraded to a level of room even below what I booked. Sort of comical but whatever.
I was perplexed and the hotel management said they'd resolve the next day. That night we asked for food options in the area, oddly they would only ever tell us there's a restaurant onsite or room service but wouldn't tell us where food nearby is. Yelp to the rescue! (We found great options!)
The next day, we did finally get a room, that had a great view, two very tiny but comfortable double beds, and a functioning tv! The rooms are definitely outdated - blinds broken, walls cracked, windows don't seal properly (but also don't open) so you hear a lot of road noise. The bathrooms, also, highly outdated, no water pressure, cracks in the paint and walls, misaligned cabinets etc.
All in all, the location, and view are what save this hotel for me. The staff do a good job at attempting customer experience but I do think they're not remembering this is supposed to be a very high end hotel. The service was decent but not what you'd expect at a luxury accommodation.
Kudos to the bartender at the bar who has a great memory, even remembering my room number (albeit changing daily).
I think if this hotel did a light remodel it would be there.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 2, 2024
We had a wonderful experience, beyond expectations. Met by Erik at the front door, easy check-in, terrific and attentive housekeeping services (my wife was SO impressed by the way our room was cared for each day!), this is definitely a hotel worth revisiting in the future!
The hotel was first and foremost clean. Maintenance seems to be on the ball as the materials and surfaces and finishes were in a fine condition, all the hardware and facilities in functioning order. Nothing looked as if it had been ignored. Very satisfied with the presentation and operation.
I was there for a business conference all week, and my wife and daughter joined me to enjoy seeing our Nation's capitol.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 27, 2024
Not a good Marriott property, I expect WAY MORE from a JW - or even from Marriott.
It's impossible to get any help from your room. Dialing with "at your service" or worse just the operator gets you transferred to India. They use a voice recognition that couldn't help me, it rang ~ 12 times and then I was transferred out of the country for help. BRUTAL.
Room was ok, but dated. Low end products in bathroom, and towels are terrible.
Saving the property from a 1 rating - the bar & lounge one floor down is excellent and the Club, they do a very nice job with breakfast.
Even though I am Lifetime Titanium I would stay at The Williard next time.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 1, 2023

This place is centrally located just a block from all the action. Great accommodations, large rooms, comfortable, and ample. Ask for a monument view on the upper floors for an enhanced experience. The executive lounge on the 14th floor is great. Offering great services, good breakfasts, good snacks and pay for drink options.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
