The sushi here was good. They have a bunch of fun different rolls and boba. I really like the angry dragon roll and fashion roll.
The prices were reasonable for dinner, the special rolls were a bit on the higher side.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Victoria D.Brooklyn, Brooklyn, NY03Aug 3, 2023
"On Friday, July 21st, 2023, I had a frightening experience with blatant racism at JR Sushi in Manhattan. After leaving one of my accounts following a presentation, I arrived at the restaurant around 9:30 pm feeling hungry. JR Sushi appeared uncrowded and open, so I decided to dine there.
Upon entering, no one approached me to seat me, so I assumed it was a casual seat-yourself place. I approached the man at the bar/counter area to ask for a table, but he rudely handed me a menu and seemed uninterested. I insisted on a table, but he dismissively shooed me away. Despite this, I decided to seat myself and proceeded to order a glass of wine and vegetable soup.
As the same man came to take my order, he condescendingly questioned if that was all I wanted. I remained polite, stating I might order more later. This uncomfortable situation made me feel like I needed to prove myself, assuming they might be stereotyping me as a Black person. Later, a White couple entered the restaurant, and the employees rushed to greet and seat them, but I didn't receive the same treatment.
When my small soup arrived, I realized I needed more food and politely asked for the menu. The man snatched my wine and soup, telling me to 'GET OUT.' I was confused, embarrassed, and hurt. I recorded the incident, giving him a chance to rectify the situation, but he continued telling me to leave. Other customers also witnessed his rudeness.
As a Black person in America, I know the importance of raising awareness about mistreatment. I'll report this incident to the neighborhood committee board and inform the surrounding businesses. Such behavior shouldn't be tolerated, and I won't patronize JR Sushi again. This hurtful and offensive experience should never happen to anyone. -DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS RESTAURANT-JR. SUSHI!!!"Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mark S.Haledon, NJ24834478Sep 27, 2023
This was my first visit to JR Sushi. It was a Saturday at 4:15pm. I ordered the spicy tuna roll and given sauce in a container to pour into a dipping bowl. The dish arrived very quickly. I enjoyed my meal while watching subway bound pedestrian traffic pass by. Everything went smoothly. The staff was direct but I can see how other Yelpers may had perceived the attitude to be rude.

Got the Orange dragon roll here and it was super tasty! Loved the small crunch in it as well. Flavor was good. The a la carte eel wasn't my favorite and the rolls are a little small but I'd def come back and eat here again!

3 stars is being a little generous. The decor in the restaurant is not the greatest. Me and my friend were the only one in the restaurant so it was quick to get served and seated. We should've taken that as a sign though. I got the shrimp tempura bento box. Ok price. They left the vein in the shrimp which really turned me off. My friend got the 3 roll combo. Also same price (around $23 if I remember correctly?) Our bill came to $63... way too much for subpar food

Average sushi for a fairly average price. The three rolls I got were tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. For a lunch special it came out to $16 for all three. They were each pretty good but they came out small, about the size of a thumbprint. It did not require much effort to eat these. I also found their dipping sauce to be incredibly salty.
As for the side salad, what is it exactly? I saw it as a lot of iceberg lettuce and thinly chopped carrots with peanut sauce. It was like eating water. As mentioned, you get a lot of it, because what is it to them? My comparison is it is like the Mexican restaurants that add extra chilis to their salsa when you get the free chips and salsa. It costs them little, but it is an attempt to get you to buy more food.
I might come back here but I will tread lightly.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Nina T.Union Square, Manhattan, NY29Apr 8, 2023
I felt cheated as my order was to go. I ordered a lunch 10 piece sashimi with salad. And now, let me start from the beginning:
I ordered a 10 piece sashimi under lunch special. So it has a soup/salad side also. The order was to go.
He first charged me $2 extra as i requested for only salmon sashimi. When i looked disappointed, he said "no problem, $1 extra is fine". To that I said sure, and I waited for my order patiently.
I was made to wait 30 min, for my sashimi order. "Seriously"
When I paid, i was not given the receipt. Upon asking, I saw that I was charged $.67 as a"service fee", so I paid like almost $20 for sashimi, "lunch special" Its not really the money, but the lack of integrity and ethics here...
In whole foods, it is probably around $14-16 for sashimi and a much better quality fish.
When I got home, I did not get my order. I got a bento box instead with only 4 pieces of sashimi...I was starving so I ate it all..but highly disappointed!!
but I know for sure never ever to go there and let the public know of my experience. Bad, bad , bad from "Head to Toe"Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mitmita B.Brooklyn, NY01Apr 10, 2023
Small, dark, unpleasant, and uncomfortable. Add to that a very rude server who snatched menus from our hands and told us he won't serve us. We were puzzled and asked what the issue was, and he couldn't explain. We thought maybe it's because we were a large group (we were nine) and asked him if he prefers if we order to-go, and he just shook his head and waved his hands asking us to leave. If there was such a thing as a negative star I would give this place five negative stars. There are plenty of good sushi places in New York City, don't bother with this one.

Checked out JR Sushi for dinner since it was right around the corner from an appointment I had on Wednesday. I was starving and ordered the gyoza appetizer and two basic rolls (spicy salmon and spicy tuna). I'm used to gyoza that is lightly fried at the bottom. Although these weren't fried at all, they were still tasty and the stuffing was still good. The spicy salmon and spicy tuna rolls definitely hit the spot and I loved that they were wrapped in a thin layer of rice. Both rolls also had a nice crunch. My food came out pretty fast, and even though I dined in, I was in and out within a half hour.
