My current favorite spot. I appreciate the casual vibe of counter ordering. The coffee drinks are great. The food is great. The ambiance is utterly charming and comfortable. The staff could not be nicer.
Great place to enjoy iced bevvie on the patio. They have a few shade structures and some tree shade.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Alberto C.Anthony, NM04Apr 7, 2024
"Under New Management" doesn't mean better management. We went there many times when it was under the old management. Not impressed with the service. It is almost self service. Like Whataburger, you pay, take your drink to your table, and then they bring your order. My wife and I had the salmon sandwich. It was very dry, I thought that I was going to choke! It came with a small amount of potato chips. With drinks and a sweet bread, it came to over $40.00. For that much, they could use waiters and give better service. Maybe, when it is under New, New Management, we might go back. Not impressed.

Caveat: we ordered Basic food. We weren't expecting a 5-Star brunch place in Josephina's backyard.
However, the chilaquiles and huevos rancheros were Very Much up to par, and the "backyard patio" ambiance was very nice. Our server was very courteous and friendly, which made for a good breakfast overall.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 3, 2022
Visited on a Saturday at noon and it was extremely hot out. They have a lovely patio with a fair amount of shade; you can't completely outrun 100+ this but it's not terrible considering the weather. It would be absolutely perfect at 80 degrees but hey, they can't control the weather.
We had to go inside to the counter to order, and they brought the food out to our table when it was ready. They worked with me on substitutions, which was nice. I had a bowl with potatoes, bacon, cheese, chile, and black beans instead of eggs. It was great!
We stayed outside but there was a bit of seating indoors as well. There was a musician playing on the patio when I arrived, she was just wrapping up so I'd guess if you went earlier, you might catch live music outside.
I'd definitely go back on a cooler day!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 12, 2021
We heard Josefina's gate was the most photographed gate before social media took off and had to check it out. While taking photos of the gate, we met the nicest gentleman who turned out to be the owner of Josefina's. We learned (according to Randy, the owner) before California wine country even existed, New Mexico wine had already a strong foothold in the region. Who knew!
We also learned that you can rent a room at josefinas (we checked the hotel portion out and totally fell in love with the charm. Will def stay here if we ever come through again).
Onto the food!
We had the Posole soup and tacos. The food was really fresh and light, which I appreciate after days of super heavy mexican meals. The highlight though for me was the salsa. It was so good with a good healthy spicy kick to it. Which I really appreciate.
Definitely check this place out for the charm, hospitality and ambience.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Carla M.El Paso, TX72812Sep 26, 2021
There is so much to say.... Sorry no pictures of food, we ate it all..without stopping for any length of time.
We both had the huevos rancheros red sauce and potatoes. You have a choice of beans or potatoes with your brunch. The potatoes were perfect with a slight crisp. The red sauce was delicious heat. Not too hot yet you knew it was there.
The chips and salsa was flavorful with hatch chilies. All in all a pleasant experience we will repeat.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Kurt D.Las Cruces, NM63718Oct 17, 2021Updated review
I'm glad that I got to try this restaurant one time before they closed to the public. Now their website says they will only be catering to corporate events and events for special occasions.
I was going to try the winery that owns the restaurant before but this business has lost my interest. Meh, underwhelming.
There's all kinds of other great restaurants to visit anyway.
I have to wonder if this is going to be another historic relic like ao many places around here.
I'll go hang out at 28 instead.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 26, 2021Previous reviewI have driven by Josephina's regularly and I was visiting Mesilla Plaza today and decided to try the restaurant for the first time. I've been wanting to visit the restaurant for quite some time now.
I ordered green pasole and when our server Bianca brought it to the table I caught a whiff of the soup as she was setting it on the table and OMG!! It tastes as good as it smells. I ate on the patio and it is quintessential New Mexican and very relaxing and pleasant. After dinner I went snooping around and I have to explore all of it more thoroughly.
I was always hesitant to go because of it being Mesilla and I assumed that prices would be high and that it was strictly fine dining. Boy, were my assumptions incorrect. Don't get me wrong, the food is superb and reasonably priced.
So far, this is the nicest restaurant I've visited on the Plaza, both for the atmosphere and food.
I'm thinking I'd enjoy staying in the Inn a couple of nights just to hide out. - Leslie W.Las Cruces, NM228899564Mar 19, 2021Updated review
The new owners (who also own Fresh Chile Company and Rio Grande Winery) have taken Josephina's to a whole new level. Still the best posole in town, still fresh made dishes and now Ice Box beers and a wine tasting room!! It would be the perfect place for a family gathering, corporate event or big group of friends to enjoy the afternoon.
The patio here is mostly covered and lovely (heaters for a cool night). And yes, NIGHT. The new owners have extended the hours into the evening so you can enjoy the beautiful Mesilla plaza and then a bite to eat and a glass of wine.
This place was good before but seriously, Randy and his family and crew have made this a GO TO place in Mesilla.
It's a beautiful location and a friendly wait staff and the food is just wonderful. (Even though their burgers are not my fav in town). But since I discovered how GREAT it is, I get the posole anyway...so, it's all good.
They have added a little market place where they sell their salsas and wine and bbq sauces. Don't forget to grab some for your kitchen and friends.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Nov 15, 2020Previous reviewYummy yummy yummy...I got posole in my tummy! I name this as my favorite green chile posole in town. Fantastic translucent broth, lots of hominy, the perfect amount of cilantro and onion on the side. The limes were super juicy too. Ideal! I shoulda got one to bring home.
Wife had chicken salad stuffed avocado. Super fresh, visually delectable and very tasty. Big chunks of chicken.
This is a bright, open, friendly place to enjoy a bite. Have a sangria or mimosa. Gather with friends. Grab some down time and fill your belly.
Staff is such a treat, too. Comfy. Homey. A place to return time & time again. - Laure S.New York, NY150Jun 11, 2021
Great Food and Lovely Patio!
Food & Drinks
The food was really good. We went for Brunch. Great Tacos. Delicious and full of flavors!
Service
Amazing service.
When we arrived, we were quoted a 30 minute wait, which wasn't an issue for us as we were able to walk around for a bit. It ended up being only 20 minutes. The hostess was lovely and very accommodating. She was busy as the restaurant was full and many people were waiting for a table, but she was still professional and amazing. Great job!
Our server was friendly and welcoming. She did a wonderful job. She took the time to ask us a few questions and was able to connect with us. She took great care of us without being overwhelming.
Atmosphere
The patio is spectacular with the "adobe" looks and some greenery. Plenty of shades and some misting fans; so no worries about the heat. They also had an exceptionally talented singer. We enjoyed our experience so much!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Eric V.Las Vegas, NV156120Apr 15, 2021
My wife and I came out for lunch and really enjoyed the patio. Great ambiance and lots of shaded seating. Our server Christina was friendly and recommended the flautas, my wife ordered the Chile rellenos. The rellenos were great but my flautas had very little chicken which I mentioned when Christina asked how our food was. Certainly wasn't looking for new flautas, or anything for that matter but they were very concerned about making up for the small discrepancy in my order. I was really impressed at how they responded, and how their manager came over to offer an apology.
We've been here before and had great service, this is the first "mistake" but it prompted me to write this review because they were so cool in trying to make things right.
Will for sure be back!!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
