Came here a few times during my months in Portland and you have to come in expecting what it claims to be (Not to discredit everyone who gave this place poor reviews, but if you're well informed about what your night might look like, you tend to be less disappointed! :))
Cover is usually $8-10, which to me isn't bad if you're committing to staying here a little while. Befriend a few nice dudes in line and maybe you won't have to pay at all ;) Out of towners - remember that Portland night life ends strictly at 2am (this isn't Reno/Vegas people!), so if you want your money's worth, come early. Came here during pride weekend because 90s night at Crystal Ballroom had literally the longest line I've ever seen (like 2 blocks!)
Drinks are reasonably priced, and around 10pm you get pretty quick service at the bar - my go to here is always a rum & coke and I like the alcohol to coke ratio.
The music is good here - it's known as an 80s/90s club - but it's really an 80s-90s-current top 40 club. Sometimes it's hit or miss, and there might be a couple hours of strict bangers and then maybe 15 mins of EDM nobody has ever heard of but can still head bop to. I've come here completely sober and completely hammered, and I had fun both times (I think). My knees were probs arthritic by the time I left because I danced so much. Yes the club can be sloppy with 20 somethings going ham, but they don't try to hide this. There's always a critical mass here where it's not too empty, but there's always some empty corners for my friends and I to chill in if we need a breather.
Warning: DON'T accept a lollipop or perfume spray from the bathroom attendant unless you want to tip her - she's very adamant about wanting a tip. But if you just say "no thanks," it's all good in the hood.
I've been cut off at the bar before but it was reasonable. ;)
Another pro I love about this place is that the dress code isn't strict at all - you can come here in jeans and chucks and you'll be fine.
Overall, I feel like your experience here really depends on who you go with. I've had an amazing time every time I've gone, but mostly because my friends are freaking great (tbh the strangers are always really great too, Portland is a fairly friendly city. I split an uber with people I met in line at Crystal Ballroom who were also looking for a cheaper night out and shorter wait time).
10/10 would come again the next time I come back to Portland.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 9, 2018Updated review
This place has not aged well. Or maybe I've aged too well to "get" this place anymore.
The music is rarely retro. It's mumble rap and worst. The bartenders are rarely thrilled to take your order. The bathroom is a cash bomb of a (nice woman) trying to get tips for handing you a paper towel and to sell you stuff.
Plus, unless you show up early enough...a $10. Nah.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0May 6, 2014Previous reviewI've been a good ole "on the fencer" person, mainly because I have never paid cover here, and I would never never ever ever pay cover here. Never. I'm okay with Ground Kontrol $2 fee. This is Portland and covers can bite me in the you-know-what but if there's video games, I'll give you eight quarters.
Not you, Jones, and your $10 silliness! However if you slip in before 10 (or know Jones' biggest cheerleader Melvin) then you don't have to pay up.
It's fairly spacious and doesn't really fill up until later (I guess people DO enjoy standing in line to pay $10 after all) and the VIP booth areas are pretty nice to have. There's an outside for smokers and...people who like outdoors.
The music can vary quite indeed. It's mainly 80's and 90's and varies between club/dance and hip-hop. Some nights I'm totally digging the playlist and other times it's like WTF is this? The dance floor gets more and more squeezed as the night goes on. The bathrooms have an attendant who has, oh lord, everything a lady might need and hands you a towel. It's nice...except then you feel compelled to tip. Tip at least once, ladies.
Drinks are a 3 - the Tang drink is cool and the $2 drinks during happy hour are great. The prices skyrocket after that and you can't get two drinks at once for yourself. Nope. One drink per person. I understand wanting to keep people from getting drunk as hell, but when you're standing in line for 10-15 mintues for a drink I want two, dammit. Oh! Security is good (maybe too good) and will toss your butt out if you get loud/rowdy/wasteypants. - Katelyn P.Happy Valley, OR54781642Apr 14, 2019
You gotta tip the bouncer In the bathroom for a paper towel I went back to clubbing with wet hands so sad I'm just letting you know before you go to the bathroom don't accept paper towels from them they will make you tip her 5$ each time you go to the bathroom TIP BRING YOUR OWN TOWELS TO DRY YOUR HANDS
Other than that my favorite club in Portland I haven't been to any other club before 9pm is free to get in after that it's 8-10$ to get in my favorite well drink is the pineapple with vodka well drink but they put to much ice not enough drink seems like but I like it you gotta drink a lot to get a full experience of this clubHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 184328199Nov 27, 2016
Ive seen a few bad reviews on here - however coming last night I have to say we had a good time! 8-11 was 80's & 90's music ( not my thing ) but after that they open the other side and play newer music and a lot of throwbacks!
Very chill crowd and lots of dancing! Had a good time!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - 101265422Oct 3, 2016Updated review
I have been back to Jones a few times recently and feel the need to update my review. If you are going to call yourself an "80's & 90's dance club" and have plenty of ambiance and decor to reinforce this idea you should be playing music from the 80's and 90's.
The last two visits I have made to Jones have had a little music from the 80's and 90's decades with more and more current music seeming to take over. I really used to love coming here to get my dance on because the music was great and I knew what I was going to get after paying my cover fee. I now feel pretty reluctant to frequent this place anymore and it makes me sad.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 17, 2016Previous reviewI'm glad a place like this exists in Portland. There are several places in the area where one could go to dance, but this one is one of my favorites when I am with a group of people. You can please almost any crowd with the fun music of the 80's and 90's!
The decorations are fun with their bright colors and their way of sometimes making you feel a bit old (mainly the Light Bright, cassette tapes, and selections of television shows). The DJs here always play some of my favorite and very dance-able tunes from the 80's and 90's. However, they do tend to get a little ADD with how often they switch from song to song.
I enjoy showing up here on the early side in hopes of not having to pay the door cover charge. This also makes for much more room on the dance floor to "get your groove on". They were even offering happy hour prices on mixed drinks when I was here on a Friday; I was pleasantly surprised by this.
I'm really not sure what more one could want. Great dance-able tunes, drinks, and an overall really fun time with a diverse crowd.
Go on...I dare you not to dance! - May 31, 2016
Despite the mixed reviews on Yelp, my group of friends and I had a blast here on Friday night. We came relatively early (around 1030ish pm) and the crowd was pretty small till midnight. Music was mostly 80s/90s pop & hip hop, and towards the end of the night, music did eventually include newer hits / EDM.
Cover is $8/person, cash only. For drinks, shots average around $6 per, so you can expect standard club pricing. The bathrooms (for the ladies at least), was neat and orderly, so it was refreshing to use the bathroom without worry of someone puking / peeing everywhere (whewwww). As for the crowd itself, it was definitely more in the late 20s and beyond.
My advice is: swing by here before midnight/1am ish. We left roughly around 12:30am and by then, the line was pretty long to get in. For attire, there is a dress code but for the most part, it's casual here. For dudes, just remember not to wear baggy clothes and etc per standard club rules.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Aug 12, 2017
While the club played decent music, the drinks tasted like they didn't have much alcohol in them, and the woman working the "host" stand (i guess you could call it that), lost her shit because I was standing nearby and placed my drink on it for a second trying to find the other people in my party. She was not happy at all by it, and then proceeded to tell the bouncer and/or a security personnel who had the nerve to come outside a few minutes later (when we left) to take a photo of my face... and told me to never come back again.
I can see why this place has some shitty reviews. Another classic club that gets away with rude staffing, soda drinks, and ok music.
I'm sure there are other better places in Portland to club at.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 5516940Jul 1, 2019
Hit up Jones on Saturday night to dance the night away and I wasn't disappointed, great spot, excellent DJ, and terrific bar staff. All in all a great time and atmosphere!

Always the best time at Jones. The best DJ's, best bartenders.
Went last night and had a VIP table with champagne (which was amazing). Our personal bartender, Karin, was the sweetest, she makes an amazing drink too!
I love the variety of people at this club, you're never too young or too old for Jones!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
