Authentic Chinese Dumplings - Seriously good
We found Jolie at the North Tonawanda Farmer's Market one day last summer. Her dumplings are fantastic. We have tried the vege, pork, chicken ones. While we love them all, the pork and vege go faster in this house, but they all get eaten. She sells them already cooked or frozen. If you pick up a bag of the frozen (which we often do), keep them frozen until ready to cook. We have "sauteed" them, heated them in the toaster oven, browned them in the oven, all methods are good. Be sure to get some of the dipping sauce as well, its very good.
After the market last summer, Jolie could be found at the Horsefeathers Winter Market while it was open, and the Westside Bazaar for a short time.
She liked the Connecticut Street Horsefeathers Winter Market location so much she opened up shop there! Next to Blackbird Cupcakes and Press Raw Food and Juice. She left the Westside Bazaar, but she does still do the Farmers Market on Saturdays with her son.
She has expanded her menu to make some other traditional Chinese food, that which we have tried has been terrific. Her menu has been expanding and each time there is a new offering.
You have two choices here - one is ready made and ready to eat food, the other is frozen to cook at home later.
There are a few seats in this cute space in the market. Stop by here, grab a lunch or dinner, and then get dessert at Blackbird Cupcakes. One stop shopping!Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0Apr 6, 2013Previous reviewJolie makes terrific food. I have had her dumplings, her meat pies and her garlic chicken. They are all very good and she makes it all herself. My favorites are probably the dumplings, specifically the vege or the chicken ones. We pick some up (frozen usually) on Saturday at the Winter Market, but when that closes in May we will go to her storefront. She suggests steaming them at home, but we often fry them in a pan. Either way they are very tasty.
I have followed her from the North Tonawanda Farmer's Market to Horsefeathers, and now to Grant Street. Shes a good find! - Jamie T.Amherst, NY2683872554Jan 19, 2015
Wow! I want to give this place 5 stars but we are going to have to help them get there.
When I stopped in to try the Doubles at Michelle's, I decided to explore the space because I had never been to the Horsefeather's Market. I entered Jolie's space and might have turned around. It's a small room, rather cluttered, and with only a table or two for seating, which were occupied. But Jolie had already engaged me in conversation, telling me about her food and tempting me with the sample of a dumpling.
As I tasted the dumpling (which was pork), I noticed the freezer full of a variety of dumplings ready to go home. Beef & Ginger was an option and being obsessed with Ginger, I had to take a pack with me.
Jolie's pride over her product reminded me of my grandmother as she explained preciously how to prepare them. She was just so clearly excited to share her creation and the knowledge needed to prepare them properly.
They were amazing. I made my own Sichuan sauce to go with them. I'd love to see this woman be able to expand her business into a bigger space where she has more room to work and accommodate customers dining-in.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Julie C.Buffalo, NY1205529Sep 14, 2015
I will preface this by saying that this is based upon her dumplings and egg rolls available at Orchard Fresh.
I will not go into the trials and tribulations of finding these pieces of tasty goodness..I will just say that once found, these goodies are relegated to the special hiding spots within my freezer.
The dumplings are truly special in that they do not have that weird chewy gristle that I associate with any meat based dumpling. They are also so flavorful! Thus far I have tried chicken and pork. Hubby has also eaten lamb - Thank you Maria B.- however I do not partake. He concurs with my take on this. These dumplings will melt in your mouth with goodness. The dough is tender however not the cellophane kind that breaks apart.
The vegetarian eggrolls?? Another story. I cannot keep them in my house. Bring them to room temperature and shallow fry them. It doesn't get any better than this.
I have several chicken dumplings waiting for me right now. I need not say anymore.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sam C.Buffalo, NY9142Nov 14, 2014
Amazing Chinese Kitchen spot! I was so lucky to try it out, actually my Mom took me there.
Having said that, if when you do visit a Jolie's Chinese Traditional Food the following dishes are absolute must-tries for everyone
-KongPao Chicken: In Beijing, we expats call this the 'The King of the Laowai Menu' (argh- I just drooled all over the keyboard....)
-Peking Duck: Peking is the original and erroneous western spelling for Beijing. Although not normally served in the native regions of most Chinese cooks found in Chinatowns, it's too delicious to pass up and luckily, the dish's taste is usually much more authentic than the its spelling.
-Fried Noodles: You'll never regret ordering this dish....
-Ramen: Real Chinese food-lovers slurp it while it's hot....if you go with a friend, order two bowls with different broths you won't regret it!Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - D B.Buffalo, NY108449Jan 7, 2015
If you want authentic Chinese street food, then you need to come to Jolie! Her dumplings and kabobs are awesome. I love the chicken and pork dumplings and the chicken kabob. The dumplings are seasoned well, the sauce doesn't add too much salt. They are just the way I like them. The kabob is spicy but not too spicy - unless you ask her to make it that way. I am sure the beef is good too I just don't usually get it. The egg rolls are also good, I just don't eat them often either, I always fill up on dumplings!
Honestly I don't think I've ever had a bad meal from her! The restaurant itself is tiny, but we just take it home. She is also the nicest person you will ever meet, her heart is always in the right place. Definitely a local business to support!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 10625069Feb 23, 2015
Had the opportunity to eat here on Saturday. I had the Won Ton soup which was very good. Jolie also suggested the soup dumplings. After a tutorial on how to eat them, I was very happy with the recommendation. It's a great spot to sit and eat and converse with your dining mate, as well as the chef. I really came in for the soup, but ended up getting 12 dumplings and an egg roll extra after persuasion. I'm glad she helped me with the additional ordering, because everything was very good. I haven't been able to find good dumplings in the WNY region, so it's safe to say this will be my go to spot.

What a fantastic lunch spot! This was our first time inside Horsefeathers, and what an amazing experience it was. We were the only people inside Jolie's little shop, but she made us feel right at home. We split a dozen (it's actually 14 now) chicken and green onion dumplings and then we split a 5 spice pork and rice dish, as well as a Haw Berry tea for drink.
The haw berry tea was amazing! It was so sweet and lightly fruity. She informed us that it is good for your stomach! We enjoyed our sweet herbal tea, and then she brought out our dumplings with a light dipping sauce. The green onions added a nice freshness to the dumplings. I was impressed by how delicious these were and how they were NOT giant salt licks like other places.
After we were halfway done with the dumplings, she brought out the plate of pork and rice. It too was delicious! Fluffy white rice topped with a flavorful pork and sauteed veggie mix. Couldn't go wrong! This too was tasty and not too salty. Nothing was fried, either... a big plus in my book.
Overall, Jolie does an amazing job and is an awesome lady. She gave us her card and told us that we can call our order ahead next time if we're in a hurry. I know I'll definitely be back for some of her other options!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 287595357Mar 26, 2013First to Review
After my parents raved about a cabbage filled dumpling at Horse feathers Winter Market, we had to inquire further. My mom remembered her saying she was located at 25 Grant Street. Upon further research, we determined it was inside the Westside Bazaar. We called the general number for the bazaar and was transferred to her. It was 5:45pm and she told us she closed at 6. But, upon us telling her how much we were looking forward to her dumplings, she agreed to stay late for us. We also asked her to order us some Burmese coconut chicken soup from another restaurant within the bazaar - and she did! True hospitality and awesome authentic food. She only had the pork dumplings available at this time, so we ordered 4 pork dumpling dinners, which came with 10 dumplings and a side of noodles. They were delicious! The area is not the safest, and I would not have wanted to be down there much past 6pm anyways. There was actually 5 cop cars going after some guy as we pulled up. But it appears they are trying the bring more to this area, so hopefully it gets better. I look forward to returning to visit the rest of the bazaar.

I first had Jolie's delicacies served to me from a little card table at the Horsefeathers market. She has come a long way since then and is consistently cooking up incredible dumplings, pot stickers, wontons & soup. Great to have on hand and in your freezer.
