I so badly wanted to like Jolie. I've gone a few times now and just can't get behind it. The idea of Mexican/French fusion sounds amazing, but there are few, if any, dishes on the menu that sound appetizing to me. The mole tacos were bland. The tuna tartare is awful -- they incorporated black truffle into it which is overpowering. The guacamole and churros are fine.
The real kicker for me was when I ordered a plain tequila margarita no salt that they could not get right. First they brought out a margarita with salt, which our server actually noticed and proactively took back. Next he brought out the margarita without salt, but made with mezcal. I don't like mezcal, so I asked our server to have the bartender fix it. And then I think he forgot about it because I waited an additional 15-20 min and no margarita. By then we were nearly done with our meal so I told him to forget about it and bring the check instead.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 4037501956Sep 2, 2021Updated review
So I'm a fan of the food and staff, but not so much the drinks and portions for the prices.
The mini truffle raviolis were AMAZING like I remembered from my husband's dish and yet I went against my previous review and got something else - the lamb chops, which were really good, but small. The empanadas weren't anything I would get again and the nachos were pretty good. Entree-wise, the steak was good as was the burrito and seafood curry for my friends. The mussels were really good as were the scallops. For dessert, the creme brulee was fine, but tiny and the churros were yummy!
Staff was super nice, but the drinks were hit or miss and mainly misses for me. They have space for outdoor and indoor seating.
I will definitely be back my own plate of ravioli :)Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0Sep 16, 2016Previous reviewThe fiance and I came here when we wanted to try a new place and he found it on Yelp (he's learning :P)! I ended up getting some type of shrimp risotto and he got the mini mini cheesy raviolis (not the official name).
My risotto was ok.. it was good, but the risotto tasted a bit..under-cooked so it was kind of hard and just overall it was ok. The vegetables might have drowned out some of the flavor - honestly it wasn't really memorable so I can't really recall, BUT those raviolis were something else!!
I was IN LOVE with those little guys! So cheesy and it was baked and done like creme brule style so that the cheese on top was this yummy crispness! The fiance liked it, but not like me. He ended up letting me finish his place (and of course I finished mine - i don't like to waste).
I would give this Mexican-French fusion place another chance just because of those ridiculous raviolis! :) - 8229163020Jun 13, 2021Updated review
I have a newfound respect and like for Jolie Bistro.
Judging by the patronage and occupied tables through the years, this business is a popular one on Smith Street.
Since my last review, I returned for brunch (the breakfast variety) and wine/appetizers/raw oysters. Just recently, I dropped by for a late lunch/brunch/early dinner. Not to fear, all was available.
It was also a first time visit for my friend who enjoyed the entire experience.
On a late Saturday afternoon, I was pleased to learn that you didn't have to be stuck with brunch foods only. Don't get me wrong, I love eggs and the like, but sometimes when it is later, there is a craving for lunch or dinner selections.
We arrived around 3 pm and many outdoors tables were filled. In fact, no one ate indoors on this occasion. Menu was viewable via a QR code scan but I outright asked for the physical kind.
Our waiter was very pleasant and without being asked, offered suggestions. He was quite passionate about us trying the Kiwi Margarita and so we did. This drink ($14) certainly packed a punch and was delish.
As far as food, I had my eye on a few selections but ultimately went with the Chicken Fajitas which has always been a favorite especially if made well.
My friend ordered the Seafood Risotto (though with the bowl being so deep, I was unable to see what variety of seafood was included. I also failed to ask her).
Our opinion was favorable. My friend enjoyed her Risotto and I also liked my selection but there were a couple missteps.
For one thing, it didn't arrive at the table sizzling. But the main nitpick was the chicken being noticeably overcooked. True bummer.
Fortunately, with the peppers and onions, black beans, rice and mini tortillas, I was able to enjoy the meal overall.

About 3.5 but I'll bump it up because it was a pleasant dining experience.
Extensive menu, reasonable prices and I'm looking to return sooner than later.
Fun summertime pick.Helpful 29Thanks 0Love this 29Oh no 0Feb 28, 2013Previous reviewI'm struggling between giving it 3 or 3.5 stars.
Last night was my first experience dining here. It was my birthday and my sister recommended it having eaten here a few times before.
A few things to note--the atmosphere is lovely but I can imagine it to get pretty crowded on desirable nights of the week. The only credit card they accept is AMEX or cash--so keep that in mind.
Our waitress was friendly and accommodating in answering our questions regarding the menu.
A few minutes later, a basket of chips and a trio of sauces were brought to the table.
I'm a firm believer if the chips and salsa are good, it might be an indication that the food on the menu would follow suit.
At Jolie, their chips were very disappointing. I don't know if they were stale or just too thick but they were not edible. At most Mexican restaurants, I can usually eat the entire basket and last night, I just had 4 chips. The trio of salsas were okay.
For appetizer, we ordered the Escargot. Hmmmm..where do I start with this one? It was served in a kettle with a side of bread. The escargot were overcooked and rubbery. Our fault for continuing to eat it and not send it back but we informed the waitress nonetheless.
The escargot was supposed to be prepared with star anise, cumin, lime, rosemary and browned basil panko but I couldn't taste all those flavors. To me, it was sitting in a lot of oil with garlic and a green herb--whether it was rosemary or basil, I couldn't figure it out.
For main, I ordered the Fisherman's trio which was scallop, seared octopus and shrimp on pureed artichoke and fennel. It was good but the portion was shamefully small---more akin to an appetizer portion. I could count the pieces of seafood--6 in total. It was very good and tasty although I believe the octopus and scallop was slightly undercooked as I was unable to even cut the octopus.
My sister ordered the mussels with pineapple and chorizo. It comes with a side of pomme frites. I must say that the mussels might be the way to go if you dine here. It was a generous portion and quite good.
For dessert, we shared the crepe suzette which was drizzled with Grand Marnier and lit.
There were 3 types of crepes included in the portion and it was extremely good.
Overall, I would give this restaurant another try although I did find some missteps along the way. I feel that even though we ate the escargot despite the fact that it was so overcooked, the dessert or a discount should have been given as a good gesture sign. After all it was my birthday too!! Some restaurants would have done that.
I know everyone's dining experience and palate varies but to rate it 5 stars is suggesting that it is perfect--and although it's very good---it's not perfect. - Jan 7, 2022
This was one of the more odd but enjoyable experiences I've had, what made it more enjoyable than weird was I was with one of my best friends. We decided to sit outside under the heater and had about three different people waiting on us. Can't really blame any of them for anything that went down, lots of places need help and are understaffed. The weirdest thing that happened was our entrees came out before our apps, we'd joked about and had picked off the giant pieces of cilantro atop each of our dishes and suddenly the guy then came rushing back, sorta muttering about some kind of mistake PUT THE CILANTRO BACK ON THE FOOD and took it away. Was it given to someone else? Left under a heat lamp for a half hour and brought to us later? Thrown out? The world may never know.
However, the service was good! And the menu is...eclectic but also not (it's a bit random but mainly french/Mexican). We ordered the escargot to share and chicken and shrimp fajitas. The food was great. Escargot should just be buttery, garlicky goodness and this was. The veggies in the fajitas were great and the shrimp were big! For dessert I ordered a hot cocoa (which apparently I mispronounced) and my buddy ordered an Irish coffee. Both were good but ANOTHER ODDITY. My cocoa came in a mug and his Irish coffee, a hot beverage, came in a wine glass? Wine glasses don't seem great for hot drinks but neither of us had drunk a hot beverage from one. But we were right, completely ridiculous way to serve it but ya know it just seemed to add to the silliness of the evening. We'll go back and if it's any less weird I'd be disappointed.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Sep 10, 2020
One of my favorite spots in Brooklyn for outdoor dining. Spaced out so you're not on top of other tables, plants galore, masks on, and umbrellas at every table in the sun.
My first time coming here was on a wildly hot summer day during Covid... you know, that 100 degree, pure sun day back in July? No regrets, though. The food is so great and the drinks are even better.
I loved the Cantina Cha-Cha Salad (chorizo, poached egg, blue cheese), but all of the salads look like great options if you're trying to stay semi-healthy. There are also a lot of good breakfast/brunch options (omelets! crepes!) if that's more your style. Highly recommend the guac, and you can tell them your preferred spice level which is nice.
Highly recommend this place for a brunch, lunch, or a date, if you can grab a table on the side street and are looking for somewhere that feels a little more secluded/quaint.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - 124471107Nov 23, 2021
We popped in (outside) unplanned for brunch. We ordered chicken fingers, jolie omelet with salad, and croque monsieur with fries.
Service was quick and friendly.
Chicken fingers are more of a breaded cutlet, but kids liked them. Fries are excellent.
Omelet was nice, too, but I wish I had added cheese! (I always assume in my head that omelets come with cheese and am always wrong). Salad was ok. I'm not sure if the spinach leaves were on their way out or if it was something funny about the dressing.
Croque monsieur was really tasty. We must have accidentally ordered a side of fries, but they were delicious and all eaten.
Solid experience! Lots of people were ordering nachos, so maybe we will try those sometime.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dec 1, 2019
Awesome place! Came on a busy Friday night, had to wait about 20-30 mins for a table. Walked around the neighborhood and came back and the table was ready.
I wanted so many things on the menu it was hard to decide. Settled on lobster tacos for my main which were just perfect and not heavy. Also ordered a pecan crusted molten brie and chicken nachos for the table. Wished the brie was bigger! I only got one bite but it was heaven. The chicken nachos were delicious - the pickled jalapenos were particularly good and not overly spicy. There were also complimentary chips and salsa. Husband had steak which was perfectly cooked. The steak sauce it came with was punchy and flavorful.
I tried the only gin cocktail on the menu which was sort of like a mojito. Loved it.
The waitress was alright but seemed a little sullen. Not super friendly but got the job done.
There was a note on the menu that it was amex only or cash - I was the only one with amex so I paid for the table and everyone venmo'd me or gave cash.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Zac F.Brooklyn, NY315Jun 24, 2022
Too bad they are closed permanently. I was just on Smith St and the doors were covered in brown paper. It was always one of our favorite spots. I'm having a margarita in their honor at home as I type this!
I hope something good takes over the space as it was one of the better spaces on Smith.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Thy L.Montclair, NJ89431569Aug 30, 2020
Hard to believe I haven't written a review in all the years that I've been coming here! The food is always delish and we used to come most often for the all you can eat mussels that came with a choice of 3 sauces and delicious fries!
Prior to COVID-19 we sat inside a few times and outside also. Inside was also a bit loud but in an energetic way. Now we were seated immediately outside on a weekday evening and provided water quickly. All servers had masks and wore them well, not adjusting masks etc.
As I said, the food is always a hit and never a miss. In the past the gazpacho, mole, tacos, were all amazing. This time we got guac and chips, crab cake - spicy good, mussels of course and queso fundido. My daughter loved her chicken fingers - made fresh and fries also!
The drinks are always fun and good too!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Andrew C.Suffolk County, NY6129208Oct 8, 2021
Stopped in today for Brunch and was underwhelmed. My sidekick recommended we try this place today since she had visited previously and wanted to give them another shot. It turned out to be one of those, "I am sorry."
Between the two of us we got the Hanger Steak and Fish Tacos. We both got Fries with our Tacos and that turned out to be mistake. One of us should have opted for the Black Beans. The FrÃes were nicely salted but the fail was that it was not as crispy as we would have liked and but more on the soggy side. Additionally, the taste was as though old oil was used.
The Tacos were reasonably okay. Nothing that wowed either of us. We asked for hot sauce because it was not spicy as advertised. We also ordered a side of Salsa and Chips. The sauce was nice but the chips were not as warm as they should be. Overall, not an experience that makes us want to return. But maybe we will stop by again to try some other foods because our food hopping experience has taught us that sometimes places can be a hit or miss depending what one orders to eat. Until then, it's adios!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
