jToday I had an appointment with Thomas at James Brett in their Princess St. location, and had a very bad experience.

I originally went to this location for the first time, in December 2020 to have my roots highlighted. I was advised to wait a couple of months for my roots to grow out further before doing any root highlights, and this was noted on my file. This was good and sensible advice from the very pleasant Kaydian (if I recall her name correctly). I was rebooked for March 4, 2021 with another stylist, who upon my arrival said she was uncomfortable doing the work because she said my hair was severely damaged. She recommended hair treatments and a hair cut, and to re-book in the future. I purchased the recommended Aveda hair products from their salon, and used them for months. Aveda makes great products that I have been using for years.

I made another appointment to have my roots highlighted on July 7, 2021. I arrived to be told by Thomas that he couldn't work on my hair because it was very damaged. This is my third time in their Salon since moving to Kingston.

All this information was on my file at this Salon, and yet on two subsequent occasions the stylists were uncomfortable working with my hair. I tried to politely explain that all this time-wasting could have been avoided had they merely given me a simple call to discuss the condition of my hair and their reluctance to work on it, before they confirmed a third appointment. By this time, three people (Thomas, the stylist from March, and then also James -- perhaps the owner?), kept telling me repeatedly that my hair was damaged.

Since the beginning of the conversation, I kept saying that I completely understood the issue, that they believe my hair is too damaged to work on. So, I tried to give some friendly advice that next time, they should tell customers that they only work on healthy highlighted hair, thereby saving everyone's time and effort. James interrupted me and said to me that there won't be a next time. I find that to be a very arrogant and rude statement to make to a customer, making me feel I wasn't welcome back -- (even though I wasn't thinking of returning after these circumstances).

So why did I keep returning? Because I took their advice to re-book after waiting, and then doing their suggested treatments

I am very disappointed with my overall experience at this Salon, considering the excellent years of experience that they describe on their website.

I believe that we all should be treated with equality and respect, regardless of race, gender, social status, etc. Be humble and helpful.

"Being humble means recognizing that we are not on earth to see how important we can become, but to see how much difference we can make in the lives of others" -- Gordon B. Hinkley

I walked out with brassy hair the first time and two toned hair the second time. I feel bad writing this review because the stylist is very nice, but I've had multiple people and another hairdresser ask me if I did my hair myself. I expected a lot more for the price I paid...

The top is platinum whereas the bottom looks very yellow.. I asked for the ends to be toned and for everything to match.

I would not recommend this salon. The quality of the services are poor. I booked an appointment, came in, and was told they did not have the time to complete the colour and cut. When I asked if they would split the service, I was told that I would be charged as the colour and cut were a package. Very disappointed. You wasted my time.

I was visiting Kingston from SF and booked an appointment with Kaydian at the downtown location for a cut & balayage. It was the first time I'd ever coloured my hair and Kaydian was super sweet and patient, explaining every step along the way and ensuring that I was happy with what she was doing. The salon itself was super chic and modern and the experience was a relaxing one. If I lived in Kingston, Kaydian would definitely be my regular stylist.

I've heard they can't hold on to good talent because they pay the worst salon wages in the city (despite charging the highest prices). It's sad, because this place used to be awesome--5 years ago.

The owner is one of those arrogant, never-wrong types. After putting thousands of dollars in his pocket, I (politely) escalated a concern I had with one visit. Rather than address my concerns, he flew off the handle and told me that if that's how I felt, then I was not welcome in his salon.

Worst salon I have ever been to - paid tons of $$ to get exactly what I specifically told her not to do. Being new to the area I was in a pinch to get my hair done that was way overdue so despite my gut feeling I decided to go ahead given the reviews. I am pretty easy going and the only direction I gave her was that I did not want blond highlights - additionally I explained that I was heading south in a few weeks and my hair lightens easily so we had to make sure to stay away from anything blond...I walked in with caramel highlight (which should have given her a clue) and walked out with very blond highlights that are inconsistent (some places none others huge chunks of only blond despite getting high and low lights) and make me look like a darn zebra when my hair is up (which she knew it would be as I am in the military). Terrible these ppl will NEVER touch my hair again esp given that this was one of their "home raised hairdressers" INCOMPETENT!! I wish I would give it negative stars!

      First to Review

I was a regular at james brett and I usually had an older lady named maddie cut my hair. I spent a lot of money as I chose to get a cut from a senior stylist. I expected my hair would be the way I wanted but last month I got my hair done I was very displeased. I asked for an inch off and she cut three inches off. I asked for lots of layers and she cut a few that were barely noticeable. It took me a long time to grow my hair out and I was very unhappy about paying $80 for the cut. I called the next day and they said I could get it fixed but only by Maddi. I did not return (why would I) and went to another salon. I am sure there are other good hair stylist that work at James Brett, but do not ask for Maddy. She does not listen to what you want and thats the most important thing when you want a good hair cut.

      Updated review

This was the worst salon experience I have ever had. I do not recommend that anybody goes here. It is so overpriced, and the talent at that place is mediocre at best. There are some very stuck up and conceded people, the owner especially. I was listening to how he talked to some of his employees, and after hearing some of the things he says I can't understand why anyone would ever want to work there! I got highlights and a cut by James Brett himself, and I want my money back. I paid almost $200 for something that I could have done better myself with a box of dye from shoppers drug mart! He hacked my hair, and got a student to do the majority of the work! My hair was so far off from the picture that I brought in, I considered going and buying a box of dye that night. By the end of the 3 hours that I was there I couldn't wait to leave, and not have to listen to him speak anymore.
