I spend a lot of time on the road and in my never ending quest to avoid fast food I try to sample local places to eat whenever feasible. I see that this place gets mixed reviews and I can see how that could be based on my observations. The place is awkward inside with it's layout and the A frame doesn't help.
The place wasn't very clean or inviting but judging by the steady stream of locals I guess they aren't bothered by that. The waitress was trying to service every table by herself and she was handling it all very well.
I ordered the four piece fried chicken dinner with a trip to the salad bar and mashed potatoes. The salad bar was the standard fare with a decent offering of toppings but my house ranch dressing was very watered down and tasteless. The fried chicken was very good, crispy and delicious. The mashed potatoes were lumpy and the gravy again lacked much flavor at all.
I won't go back here to eat again because the ambience or lack there of is rather uncomfortable and the place isn't that clean. I did like my waitress and the fried chicken so all in all it was a wash for me.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Todd B.Manhattan, KS76194295Jun 28, 2018
Stopped at the cafe for lunch. Nice location just off of I-70. This was much better than fast food options. Google Maps did want us to turn down wrong street, so watch for signs you shouldn't miss it.
Typical small town cafe. Large menu with lot of options. Breakfast served all day, bonus. Dinners come with a one time through salad bar. This was probably my favorite part. You don't see a lot of salad bars anymore. It was a nice little salad bar and put as much as I possibly could on one plate.
Service was good, but didn't get a good vibe from the waitress. Not sure if it was the 2 kids with us or just being out of towners at the local cafe.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 15322500Jun 18, 2016
Great place! Loved my food!
French toast breakfast, eggs cooked over medium and done correctly! Bacon crisp and french toast perfect.
Husband loved his omelet, but hash browns could have used some seasonings.
Orange juice and coffee on point.
Staff was efficient and friendly.
Why not a five star, because they don't have gluten free items.
It didn't hinder our meal, but it takes away when you can't have toast with your breakfast.... And takes away options.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Robert M.Kansas City, MO05715Oct 8, 2020
American standards done well and promptly by an efficient and friendly staff in a comfortable dining room. I plan to return on my next stop in Wakeeney so I can try their soup and salad bar. It's the sort of place that makes one wish for an extra stomach.

Food was good.
My daughter enjoyed her spaghetti and my wife's dinner was good the only problem there I would say is the waiter seemed to be in a bad mood. But he could have just been having a bad day. Still decent service. My steak was over cooked but still tasty.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 106279298May 30, 2020
We stayed at the KOA and wanted a place nearby that had a full bar. Nice little spot. Had a few cocktails and a grilled ham and cheese, it was very tasty!

My girlfriend and I were on a road trip across the country, and were looking for a decent place to eat in the middle of Kansas for lunch. Jake and Chet's Cafe caught our attention on Yelp and we decided to try it.
The immediate area around the cafe looked pretty desolate, but this place seemed like a charming cafe right off the interstate.
The charm continued inside with the decor and homey feeling. The owner was real friendly and patient with us giving us recommendations.
The food is your standard diner affair, but it is well done and a welcome sight on a long drive across Kansas.
I'm very glad we stopped here and would definitely recommend doing so if you're passing through or stopping in this small town.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tera P.Tooele, UT1540127Sep 6, 2019
Very quaint little stop. I'm appreciative of having this diner to eat out. There weren't very many options. Food was prepared fresh. Great diner style hash and eggs. Funny mention mayo I ordered to make fry sauce had a really great unique taste. I like this place. Thank you Jake and Chet cafe!!

Perfect little stop for breakfast when driving through Kansas. Not too far off the highway, great service and fare, and beats truck stop food any day.

Had to stop in WaKeeney on the way to Denver because of weather. The front desk clerk at our hotel recommended this little cafe down the road and we figured we'd give it a shot. Definitely glad we did! A comfortable atmosphere with down home style food and a packed full salad bar.
While there, the weather decided to get bad again and the cook (possibly owner or manager) came out and ushered all the occupants into the walk-in freezer for safety because of a tornado.
I highly recommend this little gem to anyone in the area!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
