    Ask the Community

    • Q:

Does jacks sell brownie/cake mixes and icing or food coloring?

      A:

They have a limited selection of food good, both refrigerated and shelved. Make sure you check ALL expiration dates because it doesn't seem as though they have rapid turnaround of their food.

I give a high rating because Jack's has pretty much everything and anything you could possibly need, from toilet paper to buffet set-ups, in one convenient location. The store has a fsint scent of rodent and insect spray so I definitely suggest thoroughly washing everything you buy before you use it and you might even want to wipe off packages of food, although, I wouldn't suggest purchasing food products that are kept out on shelves. Also, definitely check the expiration dates on food items.

If you live in the city, this is definitely giving you a bang for your buck but if you're in the outer boroughs and Westchester, you're probably better off just hitting up your local dollar store where you'll be able to find comparable items for one third the price.

Their return policy is 14 days, only, with receipt and you're only going to receive a store credit or exchange so be aware of that. They're definitely five-star for city dwellers because of the convenience and you're not likely to find comparable prices anywhere else in the city; this will be a one-stop shop for all things party related and otherwise. They really have the whole kit and caboodle in here.

Typical dollar store with lots of chintz right now for the holidays. If you want your house to look like a Hallmark card come here. No judgement just saying. Lots of canned/frozen food here too. They look okay just check the expiration dates.

This store is kind of dirty, if you need a quick cheap item come here otherwise spend the extra 1$ and go to Kmart in penn station. The people who work Here are rude and the security guards hound people like everyone is stealing. Won't be back this store is dumpy and has high prices for
      Junky products.

Actually found things that I couldn't find at dollar tree. I've been looking for travel size bottles and soap dish for my trip. Finally found one for $1.39. It's a set of three.
It's a discount store that has reasonable prices. I bought a pair of clogs for $4.99. When I need to grab a snack I just wander over here.

Once in a while, I meet with some unsavory characters in a store or in a restaurant. This time, it proves my point.

As I decided to go into Jack's $.99, I started to take pictures. As I took my first internal picture, this dude said to me, "you're not allowed to take pictures internally". I said, "I didn't see any signs". He said, "it's on the front door".

As I went out, I looked for the sign. Nothing. He is just a low paid floor monitor who has nothing better to do than to harass customers. Sad isn't?

I see the cashiers being over worked and upset. They get defensive very easily. They give as attitudes to customers who ask questions about the products.

Located in a prime location in midtown, this store draws many customers in. Known for its cheap prices, people usually find a good deal here. I like the products the store sells. Practical, and home driven, the store caters to people from all walks of life.

I suggest you shop here quickly and leave quickly. If you interact with any staff members they either will speak to you with a rough tone or look at you like as if you have 2 heads. They lack any communication skills to make a sale.

This is a popular store in Manhattan. Why hire people with a chip on their shoulders? I know it's not a reflection of the store, but can't managers effectively train people in their customer service skills?

      Seriously.

The economy or inflation has really taken its toll on this place. It used to have great chachkies but has gone downhill as of late. This store is mostly filthy and smells.

This store also has cheap headbands and hair ties for little girls. They're fun and I sometimes bring my niece some hair related items from here.

Besides that, they have a very large food selection, which I cannot attest to because I'd rather die than eat food from a 99 cent store. Unlike other locations, it is one floor. So the merchandise is more compact. Which is better, I think. It's not a bad place to get Christmas or other holiday decorations and the like. It's cheap but not the bargain you'd think. You're better off at Christmas Tree Shoppe. This store is very dirty.

Oh, Jacks 99. Walking through Jacks is like walking through a minefield of human failure and despair. But you deliver as promised. Cheap, China-manufactured goods; poor knockoffs of more expensive items. And really, who but the rich can afford a $15 toilet scrub brush set when a $4.99 one will scrub the same s!@#?
Jacks, you hold affection in my penny-pinching, paycheck-to-paycheck heart. But, a star and a half off for the times I've purchased items that simply did not work.
Jacks, you are what America is all about- cheap, questionably hazardous goods made available for all Americans.

      Updated review

This is an update to my older review (please look at that, below). So, what concerns me about Jack's now, and additionally, is that the prices just keep rising -and you can usually do better elsewhere for known product labels. Now most items are at regular -or even high- retail prices. I just bought a clorox bleach pen there for $3.99. Later I noticed the price was $2.99 at Target and also online. That's a big markup for a normal retail item. Certainly that's no bargain at Jack's.

I think the retail market is getting very difficult for discounters with brick-and-mortar stores to make money. The margins at competing stores keep falling. That seems to be true for Jack' so that for any name brand item, you can do better at regular big-chain stores, at least when those stores have regular sales. Jack's has become an (questionable) off-brand and convenience store. (Again, see my old review for further explanation.)

All of the sales staff want to help. No one that was rude or not helpful.
However, JACKS HAS GOTTEN GREEDY. They are selling 1.00 items at 1.99 and $2.99!
      And 2.00 items at $3.99-$4.99!
I get it that real estate is expensive in Manhattan but dudes these prices are ridonkulous!
Get it together Jacks and don't alienate your biggest supporters over a little greed!

I'm going back to my local stores and Dollar Tree!

Sorry Jack's but your prices are ridiculous these days!
