Asked to scan ID in the H&R Block link so wouldn't have to in person. Entered it and still asked for all the same information seconds later. Then the tax professional for which we had an appointment was 25 minutes late and still couldn't see us.

The lady who tried to help me could not answer any questions that I had. She also talked over me and told me I will probably owe money. (She was totally wrong). Royal waste of time and it was so expensive. I regret using this H&R Block. I have always led used H&R Block and never had an issue. Usually they are very nice and knowledgeable, I'm not sure how this lady was hired.

George was so unhelpful! He couldn't tell me anything about why I wasn't getting a refund for the first time ever. Just that yah, it's probably right that I owe money. And I'm like but why? And he just kept saying that it's the tax bracket I'm in, but I told him I made around the same last year and I've made more in the past and always get a return. And I told him that each return alone gives me a refund but with both I owe? And he again said it had to do with being in a different tax bracket.
He's like yours is simple, if you want me to explain I have to charge, but the computer is probably right. I didn't mind paying for it, but he made it seem like I wasn't worth his time, and I felt I still wouldn't get me my answer.
He told me I could call our online tech support because they are different. But I was like they'll probably tell me the same thing right? And he's like yah. ‍‍
And then he even asked me which software I used, and asked if I used TurboTax. And I was like, no, idiot! I use you, hence why I'm here!
If you want tax help, do not go here!

I used the free option last year without hassle. This year it's a con. You can't finish your taxes for 2020 for free using this service. They'll take you all the way to the end only to demand $40 to finish.

I've been going to H&R block for years mostly out of convenience and visited them just a few days ago.

As my taxes are very complicated, I felt at ease that the person I dealt with for many years would be taking care of me.

I showed up for my appointment and learned that he had left the company and someone else would help me. I was a little nervous but went with the flow of things.

I met with a gal (who I'll keep nameless) who barely spoke English, made continual spelling errors on the form she was completing on her computer, and seemed like she wasn't qualified or equipped to do someones taxes.

I asked normal questions about what I could write off, and what I couldn't, etc., and she had a blank stare. Then she grabbed the H&R manual, and flipped through that for 30 minutes. Then she asked for a Supervisor to help answer the questions, who by the way, couldn't answer the questions either.

My wife and I looked at each other and decided we needed someone who actually knew taxes. Taxes are far too important a subject to have someone unknowledgable and untrained prepare them.

The woman who worked with us was reluctant to give us back our documents and asked (literally BEGGED) us to give her another chance and to asked if she could keep the originals while we looked for another company or CPA to do our taxes. And if we still decided to go with another company, we could pick up our paperwork.

I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I DECIDED THAT THIS WAS OKAY...

I found another company that I was confident in, and called H&R to pick up my documents. At first they said the woman who helped me wasn't in for the next few days and I would have to pick them up directly from her.

At first I was livid. How can this lady take our personal documents and hold them hostage while she's out of the office?! I demanded they find these documents and have them ready to be picked up. I was told they would be by day's end.

I show up, to be greeted by an older, Hispanic lady. Although this lady was nice, she had no business being in charge of phones, and greeting clients. She was dumber than a box of rocks, and slower than molasses.

I asked her for my file, and she looked through the 'bin' she thought it would be in. Then handed me a file for someone named Ryan Rodriguez. I respectfully told her that my name isn't Ryan, and gave her my full name (again). She handed me another file by the name of Sharon Smith. Starting to lose my patience, I asked her if she really thought that Chad sounded like the woman's name Sharon. She looked dumbfounded.

She concluded that she couldn't find my file and it must have been lost. She looked twice more, then called the woman who had (attempted) to prepare our taxes and asked where the file was. She confirmed it was in that same bin.

This old lady looked twice more, and said it wasn't there.

At this point, I've been standing at the front desk, staring at her for over 40 minutes. Far too long, in my opinion, to be waiting for my documents that were set aside for me.

I asked if I could come back there and look myself, which she took offense to. I told her to please get someone else to look, which she also took offense to. A manager overheard and came to the front to assist. He looked in the same bin this lady had spent 40 minutes looking in, and found it within 5 seconds.

It pisses me off that these kinds of people even have jobs. I'm sure there are much more qualified people who can prepare taxes AND answer phones.

I'll never go back there again. It's just painful.

Denise was unable to file my taxes and after an hour and a half of watching her struggle to figure out problems with the system, I gave up on her and left. I never would have thought that it would be so difficult and frustrating to file taxes with someone other than my usual tax preparer. On top of all this, the office stinks, literally stinks of B.O. because certain employees do not believe in the use of deodorant. After being there for a while and having little to no air circulation, I was about ready to turn on the AC myself. Stay away from this horrible location!

Oh H&R Block.. why? Let me start off by saying I filed my taxes for years with HRB and had no issues. I usually go to the Anaheim location to see a nice lady who knows taxes like the back of her hand. I wanted to save myself the drive this year and decided to go to this location.. mistake! When we began the process the lady that started to file didn't seem like she knew what she was doing- maybe she was new. She asked this older guy if it was ok for her to file my return he responded by saying " why are you asking me"? She replied letting him know she didn't know what the rule was (idk what that means). When she began my return I was telling her which buttons to click and when it asked for drivers license I saw her check wasn't provided ( without asking me for my license) so I asked do you need my license and she said oh yeah that will make the process faster for you to receive your return.. why wouldn't I want that? Then she couldn't get past a screen and went back to the guy who yelled at her and said "go back to your desk and don't talk to me". What kind of harsh work environment does this poor woman have to endure daily I wonder? She came back to the computer looking upset and flushed so I asked him is there any reason you can't help her? Then he finally decided to treat her with some compassion and clicked one button.. why he couldn't do that from the start is beyond me. I left without filing my taxes here because I refuse to give business to a location that degrades people and doesn't properly train their employees. I guess I'll make the drive to Anaheim!

This is the experience of my spouse, a professor from UCI:

I have been an H&R Block customer since 2003, and I must say that my tax consultation with  Fan Xiang in September 2018 about whether I needed to adjust my withholdings in light of the new tax law was the most unprofessional, unpleasant, and unhelpful experience I've ever had with this company. From the beginning of the appointment, Fan Xiang was rude, quarrelsome, and impatient. He was not only surly, he seemed to be barely holding back some kind of rage that he then vented on his clients. Beyond this, he was also an ineffective tax advisor who could not clearly explain his recommendations. He was inexplicably reluctant to pull up my last year's tax returns, preferring to work with inexact estimates, and refused to listen to the specifics of my situation. He also refused to look at my paystubs to figure out how much tax had already been withheld this year, patronizingly telling me that "it's easy" for anyone to figure out and that he couldn't look at paystubs since they were prepared by an institution he was unfamiliar with. I finally gave up trying to get anywhere with him when he declared repeatedly, "I'm not giving you any advice." I pointed out that this was nonsensical, since the purpose of a tax consultation was precisely to receive advice from a tax expert. When an office manager who had overheard these remarks intervened, Fan shouted, "I don't care that you're a professor!," a comment that completely took me aback, since I know that many of H&R Block's clients in this branch work at the nearby university, including my other faculty colleagues.

Two weeks later, with the help of District Manager La Dawn, I finally got the help I needed from Anca Vatasescu, who was extremely knowledgeable and pleasant.
