Route 21 & North of Route 137Any excuse to let the boys run off leash is a good one..and no better excuse than driving 40 minutes from our safe confines in the city into the soccer-mom hell of Suburbia!
This is by and far one of the best dog runs that we have ever been to. A massive, fenced-in hiking trail which offers a large body of water for the dogs to play in. There are so many different areas for the boys to go wild that it may be difficult to write about.
The trail does lead to a large clearing once you are inside the dog run.. This is where most of the pups and their parents play. There's more than enough room here for at least five parents and their pooches to play catch...and that's saying a lot. There's also a small side trail just passed this clearing which leads to a small tributary of the Des Plaines River..essentially a bubbling brook in the middle of no where. The boys love running through this stream..as they're aware of where the bottom is.
All in all..WE LOVE THIS OUTDOOR SPACE!...We're always guarantee'd pooped pooches after a day spent cavorting at Independence Grove!

This is the biggest, baddest, bestest doggie park in the Chicagoland area and we think it's well worth the drive to give our pit bull the opportunity to get wet and muddy, to climb trees, to sniff after beavers, and to chase squirrels. It's fenced in on two sides and bounded by the Des Plaines river, which our dog will jump right over, but is still a "boundary."
As with all dog parks, though, there are some idiot owners and don't be surprised if some dog comes barreling out of nowhere to play with your dog... and the owner takes 10 minutes to catch up. (please don't be that guy- keep your dog in your eyesight!)
They enforce the passes, and we saw a ranger checking cars for passes as we left.

This is great place to let your dog run free. It is an enourmous 30-acre park to let your dog romp and run freely off leash. There is basically one large trail around a huge pond and a large open area on the one end. If you dog is obsessed with the water, I know they will be in out of the water all along the path. It costs $10 for non-Lake county residents. It's about 45 minutes from downtown Chicago (without traffic).
