The boy and I spent two weeks in wonderful Anchorage visiting my sibling .. it was a great trip but I was FREEZING the entire time. And we went in August.. (NOTE: I am always cold.)
This was the first stop on our Anchorage bar crawl .. and my sister is partial to this place since she met her hubby here.
It was everything I dreamed of and more .. the decor was typical NYC "Dive Bar" decor and the clientele matched. The live band was good and kept me entertained while I perused the large drink menu.
I enjoyed my drinks and was also given a complimentary shot .. something about me being from NJ made the bar tender smile. Odd .. but I am not one to pass up a free drink.
We didn't eat there but the food looked good .. I would go with the halibut .. that is my favorite and it is SUPER expensive over here but decently priced in AK.
Overall .. if you are in Anchorage and want a relaxed bar, cheap drinks (based on NYC prices), dive bar decor and good live music .. THIS IS the place for you!
I went on a Friday night. It was extremely busy and really hard to get a table. They don't really have a system to get a table; you just have to watch for people leaving and snatch one. Because of that, people are just standing around different tables watching you eat, which is kinda annoying.
The whole atmosphere & service in my opinion was a little unorganized and too haphazard for my liking (but this place is more of a bar, so I guess you have to expect that?). I would have rated this place a 3 until I had their food. I tried the Hawaiian Burger with fries and clam chower. Because the burger was so good, I have to give this place a 5!
Funny thing is, I don't remember what I ate. Okay, not entirely true, how can you forget eating white salmon? I couldn't resist trying my first minority raced fish. It must be tough being white when everyone else is red, of course, they probably only figure that out when a 500 pound grizzly bear is biting them in half. It was cook perfectly, like all the fish you find in Alaska its seems. The sauce was okay. My biggest complaint is the produce, I guess its not Alaska's fault. My Salad tasted like garnish lettuce.
Okay, what I do remember was sitting next to an inebriated middle aged Alaskan. Our conversation went from him recommending this rare supremist fish, to how people in Los Angeles are all effing crazy and want to kill themselves and everyone around them. How the food in LA is horrible. How God will destroy them like Sodom and Gommorrah (okay not that far.) At the end of the conversation, he stumbbly askes, where are you from? Pasadena I says. Oh, Pasadena is nice.
Beer selection is quite impressive, great local beer selection. I would go back, I would just pack some heat.
I signed up on Yelp specifically to write this review.
I stopped by Humpy's around Saturday noonish to get something to eat. I'd never realized that Humpy's had breakfast dishes before, so decided to try out the "Hangover Skillet."
I don't know that I've ever had such a violent assault on all four relevant senses at the same time. I don't know what crimes in a past life I committed to have deserved "country gravy" like that, but it must have been bad. It tasted awful, looked awful, smelled awful and had a vile texture. If the "country gravy" could have made a sound I'm sure it would have sounded awful too.
I can now say that I've been to a restaurant, had a single bite of their food, paid and left. It was truly that bad. Absolutely inedible. If anyone had actually been hungover and had a bite of that, I think vomit would have been inevitable. I'm really struggling to convey the level of disgust and revulsion Humpy's breakfast food inspires. It feels like mere words just aren't sufficient. Maybe if you imagine me smashing a fist full of fish guts someone has left outside on a hot day that'll come close.
And we're not talking about something very difficult to make. A skillet is, by definition, a heap of breakfast items basically tossed together. I honestly don't know how you fuck that up. I guess I could mention that the service was crap too, but that's pretty much par for the course at Humpy's and if you've ever been there before you more or less expect that.
I'd conclude this by saying stick with the burgers or halibut or whatever. But I'm not sure I can advise anyone in good conscious to eat anything at a place that prepares abominations like that in their kitchen.
This place was ok for lunch. The halibut sandwich was delicious, so were the fries. Service was fine, and the big tvs are useful for watching football. They have a good selection of 80s music. 3 stars just because I really don't have a strong opinion on this place; not bad, but not great, just somewhere in the middle. The parking situation is annoying though, as there isn't any.
I had a bowl of chowder, crab roll and fries.
I wish there was a Humpy's in the Bay Area.........Crab roll was full of crabmeat......incredible, fries was unforgettable.
Chowder was creamy and tasty.........
Casual bar atmosphere! One of the best places for cheap food and great eats.....
Its got good food and a pretty solid selection of beers. The halibut tacos or halibut sandwich is good.
A friend said getting any fish blackened is a nice way to go.
Locals seem to rave about the halibut tacos, but they lacked the spice/citrus punch I'm used to in San Diego or Mexico, maybe its a hint b/c I'm in Alaska.
A little spendy, but a nice place for a brew, some food and to watch a game.
Sit out back at a picnic table and munch on Halibut tacos with one of 30+ beers on tap (mostly local) with the sun out at 11pm and strike up a conversation with a local. I do that within a few hours of the time my plane hits the landing strip on every visit to Alaska! Well, some times I get a Halibut burger Bill's way, but whatever I get has a pint of beer with a name like Moose Tooth or Midnight Sun next to my plate, and when I'm done eating I know I'm back in Alaska!
The food is surprisingly good for being a bar. The only downside to getting food here is that it is a bar and is usually very crowded.
It is a fun bar though with live music and the quizzes on Tuesdays. Definitely worth checking out!
Great restaurant/ bar! They have great food and pretty good service. Only like to hang out if you can get a seat since there is not much standing room! Love the atmosphere and pretty good drinks.
I've been hitting this place for a brunch almost every weekend for the past year and I see no end in sight. The Blackened Halibut Benedict is awesome and oh, and if it's Saturday get a cup of the soup (Cheese Tortellini). It's all just so good!
If I go for lunch, it's usually the Blackened Health Nut Halibut or maybe the Humpies burger. Friends have raved about the Halibut Tacos and of course THE BEER!
Great place w great atmosphere, but get there early if you want to a place to sit.
We tried this place after a nice but disppointing restaurant experience up the street at a much more expensive place. We decided on this place the following night, to our delight it superseded expectation by far. The atmosphere was lively, great beer choices, excellent dishes and warm service at the bar directly from the cook. A definite must on subsequent Anchorage visits.
This place is usually way too crowded, and I mean ridiculously way too crowded, but it still gets four stars because the food, beer and decor are all great. It would be too much of a hassle to go often, but it could be a lot of fun once in a while.
By the way, if you don't live in Alaska, I recommend visiting in the summer, like I did. In the summer, the weather is really not too cold, and it is light out like 22 hours a day! I have photos taken after midnight that look like they were taken in the afternoon. Anyway, I think that's cool.
Got tipped off to Humpy's by a construction guy we were working with while up in AK. How can you go wrong w/a construction dude's lunch suggestion - those guys live for lunch and won't settle for a crappy lunch.
Had the halibut tacos and they were damn good. Went perfectly with the Humpy's IPA that I downed. Had some of the halibut (Are you starting to see a theme?) fish and chips and both were great.
Thanks, construction dude!
A crowded bar that, sometimes it seems, has the entire population of Anchorage in it, all at the same time. But do persevere and push past the tourists, the locals and the drunken rabble and find yourself a table, fight a bitch if you have too, because they have one of the best sandwiches in the country in there.
Perfectly grilled, buttery crispy bread stuffed with cool and creamy, real crab salad. Huge! And just a mound of the salad, so much so that large crabby clumps end up all over your plate and you have to scoop them up with your fingers. It was probably about $10 and it was the best seafood anything I had in Alaska - high or low end. I made the horrible mistake of eating this early on my trip and nothing else I ate could compare...
Other stuff there is great, too - seasoned and batter dipped crunchy fries and pots de creme, which is pretty damn fancified for a bar. Funny story, some drunk chick came up to our table and asked for one of my fries while I was eating. I let her take one, too. Had she asked for a bite of my sandwich though, I probably woulda had to whoop her ass on principle.
If you're ever in Anchorage, Alaska, you're going to have to try Humpy's!
My friends had their beer and said it was fantastic. We ate there for dinner and had seared ahi as an appetizer and it was 6 out of 5!
We were recommended by our friend Rick from Torrance, CA., so we tried the place out during our vacation to Alaska. Super super crowded bar. Like Nicole D. said, you're lucky to find a seat or table there. Get there early if you can.
Always crowded, never disappointing. Humpy's has good fish and chips, beer, and decent service. The bathrooms are clean enough, but could get a little air freshener. But, let me talk about something better....the beer. There is a great selection....stop in often and try them all.
Great selection of taps in a modest, relaxed & casual atmosphere. Food is close to traditional pub food, not spectacular but not bad. The beer selection is the primary reason to come here. Service was consistently good for me.
It's still early, 11:30ish, the lunch rush hasn't begun yet. The biggest surprise is finding a parking spot right out front. A nice treat as I hadn't worn a winter coat, just a fleece pullover, and downtown was windy and chilly on the day of our visit. Being able to walk straight from the truck to the front door was a blessing. We find our regular seats at the bar empty and quickly head over to fill them.
They have the most extensive tap list in town. A wide variety of offerings from the craft brew world. always some local brew; Midnight Sun, Silver Gulch, Homer just for example. A good selection from the Pacific Northwest. Too many to name them all and they are changed daily. so it's best to just pop in and see what they have. They don't update their beer list on their website. It's just an "example" of what you might find at Humpy's. They also carry a bottle selection of a few Belgian and German beers. If you want a more in-depth list of Belgian's you would go to their sister bar just next door, Subzero Micro Lounge.
The food menu at Humpy's is full of dishes that utilized Alaska's fresh seafood. Appetizers might include beer battered halibut, a hummus plate, smoked salmon spread or sesame chicken wings. Their regular menu has a few heart healthy meals, too. Health Nut Halibut or Health Nut Chicken. Both dishes are a 4 oz. serving of either blackened or char-grilled halibut or chicken served with a scoop of white, sticky rice, a tiny bowl of terriyaki sauce and a marinated tomato/cucumber salad.
Many other entrees on their regular menu, from burgers to Smoked Salmon Scallops ( Bering Sea scallops sauteed with smoked Alaskan Red Salmon and pea pods in a fresh dill & sherry cream sauce tossed with fresh fettuccini from Alaska Pasta Co.).
I think the jewel in Humpy's crown (not beer related) is the fact that they have a daily specials menu. Monday thru Friday you will find daily lunch specials; a soup of the day, a salad of the day and a sandwich of the day, as well as other seasonal offerings. This visit found us deciding between the crab roll (think lobster roll but with Alaskan king crab) and the slow roasted pork chop with mashed potato and veggie. We opted to share the hummus plate instead. Go figure.
I've never had a bad beer or a bad meal at Humpy's. Service has always been outstanding at the bar, but I have had a few slow waiters when seated in a booth, especially during the busy times like lunch or televised sports events.
We visit Humpy's once a month or more, depending on how many times we are in town ;-)
I love the atmosphere and selection of drinks on tap at Humpy's. It is right down town so it is often hard to find parking that isn't 5 blocks away. Also they are so popular during the later hours that is is almost impossible to find a table in the place and service is pretty hard to get if you don't have a table. They usually have good bands playing and great food, if you are willing to wait. Don't get me wrong though I love the place and can handle the wait... usually.
My boyfriend and I went in and had fried halibut and fries for lunch one day, they were basically the best ever. It's so rare to find a place in Anchorage that has coke, most places have pepsi (ick) So, it was nice to go in and have good food, a good soda and good company.
Also, they're homeade tartar sauce is different, kinda spicy, very good.
Also, they have guitar hero competitions, I haven't gone yet, but that has to be fun.
I've been to Humpy's once for brunch and a couple of times for beer.
Most of the draw for brunch is the bloody mary bar. If you are hungover, this is the only game in town, but if you're just hungry I'd pass and go somewhere better suited for dining. They certainly do decent pub food, but why go here for brunch when other choices are so much more interesting? The food is much better later in the day when you are washing it down with a beer or three.
For beer, Humpy's is the real deal. Look around: they have more beers on tap here as every other downtown bar put together. It's not as esoteric as Cafe Amsterdam, but for microbrews from the western US Humpy's is hard to beat.
Maybe I just picked bad times, but it's disgustingly busy even on weeknights. You get a table by standing next to a group of people who look like they're about to leave, and you get a beer at the bar by being an attractive young woman. This is a turn-off if you are dying of thirst, but it's probably not so bad if you pick your times better than I seem to have.
I wish I had taken a photo of my fish taco. It was that good it almost made up for the Alehouse sports bar type feel the place had. I ordered one of their micro brews, but I don't recall that I liked it that much. This trip was back in April, and it is now August..
I can recommend anyone that is visiting Anchorage to visit Humpy's. They do things to fish that you didn't think were possible.
Strong drinks - check.
Great burgers -- check.
Decent lunch menu -- check. (Those subs for lunch would have scored this place a five).
Fun quiz games to show how stupid you are to all of your neighboring (and much smarter) drinking neighbors -- check.
Open mic night -- check.
Feels like a neighborhood bar -- check.
Hot girls running the games and getting us drinks -- check.
To set the record straight, Humpy's doesn't have happy hour! I went there around 6pm today to grab dinner. The alehouse has a very casual setting and its self seating. Granted I was starving when I got there, I still believe my taste buds were accurate. I got the beer battered halibut burger with fries. The dish was $15.99 and it was a huge portion. Very yummy indeed, no fries went wasted! The halibut tasted good for someone who doesn't like seafood. I would definitely go back there for more halibut entrees~~~
So you're trapped in Alaska, in the middle of winter (where there is less than 2 hours of daylight) and you need a good beer - Who wouldn't. Look no further than Humpy's! Humpy's is a legend in downtown Anchorage and serves some of the best beer (both local brews and imports) and food around. Bar none - they have the worlds best Fish and Chips and Fish Tacos, and their salmon would make any Alaskan proud. Also during football season, Humpy's will have all your favorite football games at your finger-tips. Best of all, its a great conversation starter with your friends who live elsewhere -
Q. "what ya doing tonight?"
A. "I going to Humpy's.."
Q. (long pause)...errhhh
A. "You wouldn't understand..."
Insiders note: if you have a significant other please tell them that Humpy's is not a strip joint (or some other seedy place) or you may find your stuff on the front lawn when you return to civilization.
YUM! Had a basic bacon cheeseburger, but the fact that I can get a beer from my home town made it the best cheeseburger ever! Kassiks on tap will win me everytime! I can vouch for the amazing crab salad sandwich and the fish tacos, as each were enjoyed enormously by two of my favorite foodies. The clams? I dont usually go for bivalves, but they were so good I was dipping my frenchfries in the spicy broth. So clean, so delicate. Cant go wrong here!
This place is a bit of a dive but the food was soooooo good. Great service too! It was the first place I'd ever been out to upon moving to ANC and I was happy to find it!
An Anchorage institution. When I turned 21 I thought I was too young to hang out at Humpy's. Now I'm probably too old. Fact is, Humpy's is for everyone from stroller to walker and all the bikers, babes, and blue hairs in between. Pick your time of day and your time of year, but there's nowhere else in town as reliable. Good food, good beer, good atmosphere, fun events (sport,s live music, trivia, guitar hero). Good servers, good location, good patio. And awesomely awesomely awesome about the weekend Bloody Mary Bar - it's my lush's dream come true! Go there, have the beer, get the t-shirt, we can all be too old together.
If you're going there for the food, GOOD LUCK finding a table. In fact, if you're going there for anything, good luck finding a chair at all. The selection of alcohol is great, though a bit too expensive... I believe I paid $9 for a glass of a higher end beer, which I could have bought literally an entire bottle for $9. The people are slightly annoying, and the bartenders always seem on edge. I would go again though.
I love going to Humpy's in the winter. The summers are just too touristy for me. The beer is great, the service is fantastic, and the food is always right on. (Plus Rachael Ray came here and gave it glowing reviews--who doesn't believe Rachael Ray?!)
I'd been numerous times, but the last was on my bachelorette party. They took care of us. Plenty of alcohol, I think a few shots were free, and in the midst of it all, I'd left my credit card at the bar and they kept it till the next day when I realized I'd lost it. A lot of places in Texas will charge you a fee if you leave your card overnight--not Humpy's.
My only beef with the place is that is it so loud. Since the band plays inside, you have to yell to be heard. Small price to pay for a good night out on the town.
Large beer selections! But if you want so even better beer go to Moose's Tooth. Humpy's might have one or two of them on tap.
Watch out this place is crowded and loud. If you know someone who lives in Anchorage you are either going to see them here or at 'Cars.' The food is tasty but nothing amazing. Staff is friendly and pretty quick for how busy the place is.
Humpy's name comes from Hump (Pink) Salmon. Many tourists visit here to eat salmon during the summer when they have big tent out on the parking lot.
Live music from local band playing anything from country to folk music. My first impression was hippy and old place but I was wrong. It is more like a restaurant than bar. Food (Salmon) and beer (Alaskan Amber) excellent!! You can try their burgers as well. I guess I'm one of those people who doesn't order seafood at seafood restaurant.
I visit here for lunch or dinner when ever I had chance to come to Anchorage. Lovely atomosphere! Try many types of "Ale" sample beers they offer.
Maybe not a strip club, but a pickup joint to be certian.
Food is less than impressive, floors are sticky (ewww) but it's not all bad.
Familiar faces, mostly friendly locals and character. That's half the pleasure of eating out anyway, isn't it?
If I see one more generic tampon commercial review of Humpy's, I'm going to vomit up the generic tampon commerical chicken wings i experienced last time I ate there, a handful of months ago. First off, people shouldn't always act so shocked and impressed that a bar has an extensive beer collection. It's like walking into your friend's house for the first time and exclaiming, "You have so much OXYGEN in here!" Further more, I'd like to implement a rule which states that you are not allowed to sound overly excited when you discover that an Alaskan bar has Alaskan Amber on tap.
Here's my biggest gripe with Humpy's... I've stood at that bar for a half hour before getting a drink. Granted, I'm not one to yell and wave my hands around frantically, directing air traffic. But I stand patiently, money in my hand, making eye contact, giving a head nod, occasionally making attempts at vocations. Humpy's is busy as hell, most of the time. Kudos to them, and their profit margin. But what they lose is any connection to their clientel. I've been around many bars, and dated a bartendar for a number of years. As busy as this place gets, there is no excuse for the lapse of attention. There are bars that are, on average, ten times busier, with less bartendars. People still get served.
It's a tourist trap, albeit a pretty one. I love the layout. Big screens never hurt anyone. However, it's something that looks great, but is completely devoid of anything beneath the asthetics. Like that car your dad bought when he hit 40. Or a stripper.
hey folks, with few choices in downtown Anchorage, you're bound to come to Humpy's for a drink or two, perhaps even a meal. A pretty eclectic crowd of people converges here for the wide selection of beverages and for some live tunes.
my visits have been attended to by pretty friendly staff.
Yes, the name of the place my lead to some extra conversation.
My friend took me to dinner here. I went there not expecting much because he's not a picky eater. He's also the one that took me to a bunch of other restaurants in Anchorage that weren't so tasty. Nevertheless, I was impressed by the variety of dishes they offered and how good our dishes tasted. I'm not a beer drinker, but I did enjoy the Pyramid Apricot. I will definitely return to try other dishes they offer.
Humpy's is loud and bar-like, and I'm becoming too much of an old lady to think that is as awesome as I used to, but I'd still go back! The food is great, amen to the praises of the blackened halibut salad. Seeing bands here is alright if you don't mind the boisterous crowd. One night, I was watching a friend's band, and having a few beers with my dad, and we ended up on Insomniac with Dave Attel. Spiky hair and nose ring, drinking with my dad, that was me. So for those summer nights, when it's still light out at 1am, who needs sleep? Hang out. Humpy's has a summer ale to keep you company.
Yeah....this place....when passing through Anchorage every time... I stop in. They have served up some of the best Blackened Halibut (laid over bed of phenomenal salad) I have ever had. If you want a taste of countless micro/beers selection, rock on! I have loved the Oyster-Shooters there as well! Although I HATE Anchorage and view it as the shit-hole of Central Alaska, HUMPY'S has been but one of the few only things I look forward to when arriving and QUICKLY leaving the city!
Humpy's is a popular downtown bar that has good food, too. The decor is 70's college bar/cheap eats chic, so come very casual, and if you can't hang with that, don't come. It has a large bar, a patio in the back which is good to catch some summer rays, and a bit shabby booths and tables. But the grub and beer are great. One of their signature meals is their Halibut Fish and Chips, with super fresh and tender fish, covered in a crispy and tangy jalapeno batter. Compliment this with a nice Humpy's IPA. They have a large selection of local micro brews, theirs and others. BTW, Humpys is the name for Pink Salmon, which get humped backs trying to mate to spawn before expiring. Humpy's doesn't serve Humpy's because some native cultures consider it spiritually holy.
