About the Business
The Howling Wolf Taqueria specializes in very fresh, authentic and affordable Mexican taqueria food. Customer favorites include the San Diego style fish tacos, Carne Deshebrada (shredded beef) burrito, and Posole (red chile broth with pork, avocado, onions, radishes and cabbage). Customers of age also love our delicious margaritas, homemade Sangrias and the price of the PBR ($2/pint). Our great ambiance elevates the taqueria experience to a new level, but for taqueria prices. The restaurant is a perfect setting for all kinds of events, from birthday parties to holiday parties to fundraisers. Building community through our business is one of our highest priorities and the reason we open up the room to fundraisers benefiting North Shore communities. We also provide catering all over the North Shore and deliver to Salem residents and businesses. We are open 7 days a week. Sunday through Thursday we are open from 11:30 a.m - 12:00 a.m with the regular menu until 10:00 p.m and the late night menu until 11:00 pm. Friday and Saturday we are open 11:30 a.m - 1:00 a.m with regular menu until 11:00 p.m and late night menu until 12:00 a.m.

Do they have gluten free options?
A:
we do depending on the severity of the allergy, if it's a consumption allergy we can usually work around it, if it is a contact allergy we cannot promise it will be safe, as our corn Tortillas are made in a facility containing flour, we only have… more

Do they have outside dining?
A:
When I went they had a couple tables outside but I mostly saw people sitting inside. I'm not sure if it is because it was seating for another restaurant for if it was just hot outside so nobody wanted to eat outside

How does anyone give them less than 5 stars?
To start, Taco Tuesday- unreal. Get there before 6:30 or you will be waiting. The steak and chicken tacos are amazing. The bartenders are professional, super friendly, and always playing awesome music from their iPods. I sit in my chair grooving to "I wanna dance with somebody" with a huge smile on my face.
Steak Chimi- my favorite thing in the world. Their queso is the best. Which leads me to their nachos. They have this delicious queso on them, and are different than your average nacho. As in 100 times better.
Even their salsa tastes so fresh. I don't even like other salsa now.
The servers are always really cool. They have local art on the wall up for purchase... a win win for local artists and free decoration for the Wolf I would assume.
I have tried other Mexican food recently and just can't get into it. the Wolf has spoiled me!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Katie M.Peabody, MA3874319Jan 26, 2024Updated review

We were passing Salem and decided to do a quick stop here. At 8pm we were able to get seated fairly quickly outside and the inside looked to be a pretty busy bar place. They server free salsa and chips which was nice though the chips were on the stale side. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and tacos. I really enjoyed the enchiladas I had! It was really cheesy and (with some help of hot sauce) had a great flavor as well. The portion size was also very big. The tacos were a pass they were weirdly so wet. Look at the pictures, you can see both on the tortilla the pool of liquid the meat is sitting in as well as the amount of liquid that fell out of the taco just from being picked up!
TLDR order the enchiladas and hard pass on the tacos!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Becky K.Rochester, WA1314528Nov 21, 2023
Ordered the fish tacos- too spicy for me- but I added a little sour cream to cool them down and yum!
Got a margarita and wolf blood bag drink (think I got the last one - since this was about a week after Halloween)- pretty good!
Would totally go back.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 26, 2023
This was some gooooood Mexican food. I had the Chile Verde chimichanga ( pork stewed in green chile & tomatillo sauce) topped with chili con queso and served with beans and rice It was really yummy!!! The queso was insanely, bowl licking good. The pork was so tender. Everything was so flavorful. They served cups and salsa while you wait. (Yummy as well. )
The restaurant was cute and clean. The service was good!
Loved their outside seating area.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lexy S.Charles Town, WV1604914Apr 4, 2024
A fun place for drinks, the food was okay. A lively atmosphere with music and outdoor seating. Our server was attentive.

We've gone to Howling Wolf a couple times since moving back to the area and each time has been fairly consistent with service and food. However, the atmosphere is really hit or miss- we've been there when it's super empty and when it's packed to the brim. This visit, we had the curly fries & queso, good wolf burrito and a chicken quesadilla. They give you a ton of curly fries, so it's good starter if you're with a group. The quesadilla was good, but just your run of the mill quesadilla. My spouse said the good wolf burrito was alright. The service each time we've been there has always been great. Overall, this is a pretty average joint for Mexican. We will continue to visit!

Came here on a Friday night to find it almost entirely full. Since it was Cinco de Mayo they even had a live DJ playing out front. We were lucky to have grabbed one of their last tables by the friendly hostess.
For drinks we tried their Paloma and mango margarita. Both were decent but the mango was better in my opinion. For food we got the howling wolf burrito with pico de gallo and the full combo fajita. The burrito ingredients were spread well with lots of bacon pieces throughout. I preferred the steak and chicken over the shrimp since they were seasoned and cooked better but in general it was still satisfying especially with the caramelized onions and peppers underneath. I appreciated the bed of rice with sour cream, cheese, pico de gallo, and lettuce. It all made for some fun mini burritos.
Overall we had a good experience. The portions were huge and food was tasty. Service was a little slow at times but he was nice when he was able to come around. Would come again for a fun casual vibe.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 3, 2023
Experience at the Howling Wolf Taqueria. Situated central to Salem and next to the best craft beer microbrewery, this is a one stop shop for tasty Latin cuisine! Walk into a bar tavern style restaurant equips with an assorted menu, fast service, and staff that makes you feel like family. All your Latin favorites, tasty cocktails, and excellent service. Grab a table inside or a patio seat if weather permits. This is the perfect spot for casual dining.

If you find yourself in Salem I Highly recommend coming here for food and drinks. The outdoor seating area is great too. The food was great. The Carne asada fries were the bomb!

This place is not my cup of tea. We got the jalapeno poppers which is a hard pass. They were bad - the pepper was very mushy and over cooked. I tried a chimichanga and got bacon with it (reco'd by our server). It was very mediocre, made only edible by the bacon. The chips were stale and the salsa had a ketchup-like quality that wasn't for me. Even the drinks left a lot to be desired. The 2 stars are for being able to eat outside and we had a great server, but I can't recommend eating here. Finding good Mexican food in MA is hard.
