Let me start by telling you that this review is for the dining room only, not the accommodations.
We have family in the area and they had called to make reservations in the dining room specifically. They were told not a problem, check in at the bar also attached to the Hotel and we would be seated in the dining room. We did that and were told to take a seat and they would be right with us.
Here is where the 15 minute journey starts. We took a seat, waited and waited and waited some more. While we were waiting for menus and someone to simply bring water, Mr. B cleaned cob webs off the tablecloth and Uncle B, blew dust out of his water glass. We continued to wait, still no one showed up. About 15 minutes in to our waiting, a man comes out of the kitchen, sweaty and wearing a white tank shirt. He asks if we have been helped, we tell him no, but we did check in at the bar and someone was suppose to be coming. He grunts, Ok and goes back in the kitchen. We waited a few more minutes and just couldn't take it any longer, with the dirty tablecloths, dust in the glasses and lack of any kind of service, we leave and wander down to Coulter Cafe.
While we waited, two other couples came in and waited for someone to help them, when they got no assistance, they too walked out. It really is a shame, it is a cool spot with a lot of history.
Save yourself and do not eat at Hotel Jeffrey.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Yves S.Paso Robles, CA143127118Dec 6, 2013
Hotel Jeffrey is a little piece of history within reach. My fiance and I are avid fan of ghost adventures and I bought the deal on livingsocial as as an onsite ghost experience for both of us. I researched the area and was absolutely looking forward to the trip.
The drive was about 3 hours long, wasn't too bad as we were accompanied by another couple who are also into the ghost adventure shows. We got to Coulterville early enough to even explore. We walked in to a bar (looks like a dive bar in our modern time) and were greeted by 2 cute puppies, 1 was a pitbull and the other was a maltipoo. Absolutely adorable but what caught our attention was the vintage decor, the bar, old gas stove, black and white pictures on the wall, peanut shells on the floor and the people sitting at a bar. This place is not your typical dive bar, the people are locals and just get up and help themselves for drinks at the bar. The bar serves beers and wines- they not pricey either! The locals were so welcoming and so chill that we talked to them for hours.
We ended up going to Yosemite for few hours and went back to Coulterville to check in at Hotel Jeffrey. We had to check in at the bar area--- I have to emphasize that as soon as we walked in, you can smell how old the place is! It's actually exciting since I've never been in that kind of environment. The floors, doors everything were made of hardwood and it creeks. We stayed at the bar for few drinks (our livingsocial deal came with 2 well drinks from the bar) while waiting for the ghost detective kit I reserved. By 6pm, we decided to go up stairs to check out the room. I believe there were 8 people that checked in that same weekend. We had our our own bathroom but was warned that our room was supposedly one of the "active" rooms on the 3rd floor. It didnt' really bother me that much but part of me is still a bit creeped out if something were to happened. The room was small and very cozy, the heater was portable and absolutely worked great- I was sweating at night and had to turn it off.
We went to the bar for dinner and we basically stayed there until 10, . Their employees, bartender, manager, supervisor were all welcoming and great people. Some of the people we met earlier that day came in-- Mitch, was such a fun guy, great character and his puppy was so adorable. After dinner, we played pool and just hung out, talk to the locals and David, the bartender and server even made a really nice bonfire in the backyard. Really nice of them to entertain their guests. The food was great, I absolutely enjoyed the steak I ordered.
We didn't see or feel any ghosts- at all however the employees of Hotel Jeffrey and locals of Coulterville made our stay absolutely worthwhile.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Lynne A.Alameda, CA135May 27, 2013
We made reservations to stay here but after the long drive we left without staying the night. Although the room looked clean, the bed looked and felt like the mattress had not been replaced since it was built. The bathroom was not across the hall from our room as promised on the web site but down the hall and behind the staircase.
They did not offer a refund.
They were only serving food in the bar not the restaurant. And they closed at 8 PM so if coming in late bring your own dinner.
An interesting little town but the Hotel Jeffry is not worth the drive.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Business owner information

A couple hours after checking in (they arrived in the afternoon before dinner time) we learned that these guests were not happy and tried to resolve this issue by upgrading to another room as the room they chose was one of the least expensive and the bed had a feather top which might be a bit too fluffy for some (all our mattresses were replaced when we took over a little less than 2 years ago), but she didn't even want to discuss it stating that her husband was in the car and they were leaving. She never asked for a refund just turned and walked away.
This is a old hotel built in 1850 and is located in a very small town at the gateway to Yosemite. We have the oldest working saloon in California and is on the historic registry. We serve dinner in either our Victorian dining room or the saloon and will stop serving usually around 8pm but have stayed open until 12:30am on some of our busier nights.
We are sorry we were not given the opportunity to make this couple happy. - Kym P.Buena Park, CA2783234Dec 31, 2013
My husband and I stopped in here for one night on our 20th anniversary road trip down Highway 49
I called ahead I let them know they said they were going to do something special or they did something special alright and we were scared but it wasn't by the ghost
To our surprise we were strong into a private party at swingers
And these swingers had no shame in their game doors open sex rooms you could hear everything naked people walking to the shared bathrooms
thank God we spent the extra money and got the room with a private bath
I don't have a problem with grown-ups being grown-ups, each their own none of my business but the problem is when the hotel owner knows what's going on and books you on the same floor it becomes your business
We were looking forward to a possible ghost encounter but unfortunately we got a rude awakening we werent impressed very disappointingHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Robin K.Davis, CA896Dec 20, 2010
In 2008, my business sent myself and a colleague to do some work on Lake McClure in Mariposa County. This unusual old hotel was the closest accomodation, so we decided to give it a try for the five nights we were there. For me, the advertisement that the hotel was haunted was an added bonus, but not so much for my colleague. She is convinced to this day that her room was haunted and slept poorly because of it.
The hotel is old and allowance must be made for that. We were lucky and got rooms with private baths, but most of them have shared bathrooms in the main halls. Ours we consider luxury, but we both appreciated them after long days outside in the oppressive heat. The beds were old-school, but comfortable. The rooms were a bit cramped, but again, they were designed a long time ago. I had no problem with them. I also appreciated the connecting door between my room and my colleagues.
At night, the lights would flicker and there were some creaks and such, but I put all that down to the building being over a hundred years old. My colleague, on the other hand, claimed there was something in her room and spent long nights awake. She was not the only one at my work disturbed by the place. Another group from my work had to leave in the middle of the night when one of their party claimed there was someone weeping in her room. There is a room that is alleged to have a crying ghost... but I am not sure if that was the room she was in. Anyway, I was not disturbed, but some people do find the place creepy.
The fancy restaurant was not open during our stay, but the bar had a decent menu. However, after five nights of eating there, I was getting a bit weary of the fare.
Definitely an unusual place to stay and close to Yosemite, too!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sfo'consumer S.San Francisco, CA65167Jul 19, 2014
The Hotel Jeffrey is a FUN overnight destination! We visited the Jeffrey with our entire Riding Club and pretty much took over the hotel. The staff were extremely accommodating and I felt as if the Jeffrey was my own for that weekend LOL!
Don't forget to ask the barkeep to loan you some Ghost Detecting electronics for when you have too many Alabama Slammers and wonder about the Historical grounds. We had so much fun and will definitely plan another visit.
Thanks again to the friendly STAFF & GHOSTS at the Jeffrey!
WARNING: The Resident Ghosts tend to take over you while at the bar and make you consume waaay more than your accustomed to drinking. Just Roll with it and clean up after yourself when the spirit leaves :-)

They had one person working the bar and the dining room -- she was nice, but harried, and clearly was not able to handle both areas in a timely fashion. (Not her fault, they just needed to put more than one person on at that hour.) It took a reeeally long time to get our food, and then our server got stuck dealing with a drunk couple at the bar for a long time, so it took a reeeally long time to get our check. Again, not her fault, more an issue of not having enough staff, I think. No one to run interference when drunky mcgee & mrs. drunky mcgee wouldn't stop bugging her.
The food was good, and the building is cool. They had a gorgeous fluffy cat stalking around the dining room, which some might not enjoy but *I* found totally awesome (as long as she isn't allowed in the kitchen). Pretty sure they had a pool table in another room, which would make the place great for hanging around with a group and drinking beer.
I'd check this place out again on a future visit to the area; the server and other staff were friendly, and it seems like a popular local hangout. We might've just hit an off night, or an unexpectedly busy night.
Good food and friendly service gives it the "A-OK" three stars from me. I think it could be a four-star situation; looking forward to trying it again at some point.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - herr c.San Mateo, CA0346Oct 11, 2008
They do a great New Years Eve celebration. Fine dining in their Victorian dining room and live music and dancing upstairs, You definitely have to make a reservation for dinner.
The place is supposedly haunted but after two stays we saw no poltergeists.
The town is a little sleepy and it's not very close to Yosemite's entrance, but not much is. I was told it's very popular among the Single Action Shooting Society certain times a year.
We had a private bathroom in our room but most rooms have to share the facilities with other guests. Don't expect other amenities like cable TV, room service or anything beyond basic comfortable old-style accommodations.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Linda H.Burlingame, CA052Apr 4, 2017
The stars are for the excitement we had about visiting this place. We planned to go on the way back from Yosemite. The 120 Road was closed so we had to go out of our way from Mariposa. We had decided we would just stop for dinner vs spend the night so did not call ahead. The website did not indicate it was closed. We got there and found it was closed. It was a cute small town with only one store that was also a restaurant that was open til 2:30pm only. We ended up driving to Modesto on the way back to the Bay Area. I hope it reopens. I worry that the town will perish with the road closures. So the stars are for hoping it reopens and the town survives. It is sad to see small businesses close and towns with different character disappear. It saddens me to see we are all cities and big chains. Good Luck :)

We chose to book the Jeffery after reading the reviews & their website.
May your stay be as pleasant as ours! Read On:
We went to celebrate our 1st anniversary & ALL the Staff at the Jeffery were quite delightful. Arrived Sunday eve, got settled in Rm 22 (said to be the Most Haunted) and went back down to the Magnolia Saloon~ which is beautiful as a vintage saloon should be~ and chatted with folks the rest of the evening. Every person we met was friendly, helpful and kind. We appreciate the historic ambiance of this Gold Rush Era hotel as well. The restoration process is making her beautiful & charming, while maintaining her character. (Keep up the Great Work!!)
We enjoyed a lovely dinner on our anniversary thanks to Chef Forrest, & David, for which we are still grateful: it was romantic and wonderful, and completely delicious! They made our celebration so memorable. BTW, even if the formal dining isn't open, the Saloon offers most of the menu anyway. Plus they make awesome pizza(!) which we ate Tues eve. Highly recommend the Meatloaf too: made fresh by Chef Forrest & it is YUMMY! Next time we visit I'm getting more. Be sure to try dessert too. Chef was testing a new one (fresh berries & puff pastry) Tues eve & I think we all approved!
About the Spirit activity...we gave them "time off" while we were there; hope that didn't spoil anyone's ghost-hunt, but we were not disturbed by anything particularly paranormal. Met 2 nice kitty-cats, though, & the 2nd-floor balcony was nice for watching the annual meteor shower, and just relaxing in the cool of the evening.
My sweetie & I have such fond memories of our stay at the Jeffery, we are planning to visit again Soon!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
