One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Hotel Drisco is in one of the best areas in the city. It might not be for everyone, as it is in residential neighborhood, but that is what makes it both special and quiet.
Don't be fooled by the phone operators, who may not have much personality, once you get there you are greeted with a smile.
The decor is old style San Francisco, while not my favorite, added to the charm of the property. It was clean and well appointed.
The extras made it a 5 star. From the bowl of fruit in your room, to the wine reception with cheese and crackers, to the continental breakfast with good coffee, cheese, ham, oatmeal, baguette, croissants and scones.
I would definitely stay again at Hotel Drisco and recommend to my friends and family.
VERY friendly front desk staff makes you feel at home. The place is old though and you can hear everything even when inside your room. If you get a room facing inward the stay is going to be mediocre. We switched rooms to one with a view of the city and it changed our whole attitude of the place. Rooms are somewhat small but the bathrooms are spacious. The rooms are all very clean and each has a flat screen tv with DVD player. The front desk will loan you DVD's to watch for free which is very cool. The rooms have free ethernet internet. Beds and pillows are soft and very comfortable and the sliders that cover the windows prevent most light from coming in and waking you up.
Great neighborhood but not really close to anything. Buy a bus/trolly pass from the front desk and a map and your golden. Free breakfast and newspaper in the morning was nice as well. The Drisco cookies are great too as was the free bottled water. Your stay being good or bad is going to depend almost entirely on what room you get so keep your fingers crossed for a room facing out.
I was looking forward to staying at Hotel Drisco while in SF on business. Unfortunately, my stay there was not positive
I stayed in room 302. This room faces a light well, the view being into windows of other rooms and an adjacent apartment building. There is no ventilation in this room and it is thus airless and stuffy. The only way to get air is to open the windows. In doing so, you are now subject to non-stop noise from other rooms, i.e. cell phones ringing/being answered at all hours, sexual relations, conversations, baby crying, toilets flushing, TV, etc. The roller shade on the window was non-functional with light coming into the room an issue all night. Air quality - around 4 a.m. fetid odors of burning food filled the room and were still present when I checked out at 9 a.m. All of this made for a miserable night and a less than refreshed sense of being for the work day ahead.
I have read similar reviews on other forums such as trip advisor. It seems that the quality of your experience at this hotel depends on what room you get. It appears that if you can afford an upper floor, outward facing suite w/view the reviews are positive. For the unfortunates who are assigned what appears to be one of four rooms on each floor that faces inward to the light well it is an unpleasant stay. I contacted the hotel manager with this feedback and did not receive a response, hence my review here. Potential customers need to know that a "deluxe queen" room (what I had) was a miserable room to spend a night in. Would hate to have a less "deluxe' room.
Management needs to come clean on the reality of their rooms, i.e. rooms facing a light well, no attached bath, etc. in their online descriptions and when booking so that the customer can decide if these limitations are worth the price. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this hotel to others.
This place is a true gem. I recommend family and friends of mine to stay here. The décor is awesome and I think it is a great value. It is located in the very prestigious part of Pacific Heights...you know, where there are just mansions...on the bright side, it's easier to find parking.
The staff is okay...nothing special. I love the fact that it is quiet, clean, bright and gorgeous.
Yikes!! I thought this was our secret! I knew that writeup in the Sunset magazine was going to give it away. For me this is just an ideal, tasteful, beautifully located & decorated small hotel. We have stayed many times on our trips up to SF and have never been disappointed.
I do have favorite rooms, and they tend to be on the sidestreet side and have some views... if nothing else, you can watch the fog drift by. One room we did get that wasn't my favorite was 101 ( i think) which was right off the front desk on the the sidewalk level of the street it fronts. It was very large & just as nice but too noisy and public for us.
We love the Drisco because of the location. How often can you stay in Pacific Heights with multi-million dollar mansions around you? It's pretty spectacular. I'm not a shopper, so I don't miss access to stores. And the walks from here... into Presido Park, around the historic neighborhood, down to Fillmore street for dinner at a grill. It's what we come to SF for... the atmosphere and chance to get out & walk a great city.
All the amenities the Drisco offers always make me feel spoiled-- simple stuff like the fluffy robes & slippers, the free bottles of water by the bed, the bowl of apples in the lobby , the wine & cheese and the truly generous breakfast. They just know how to do it right. I'll never stay anywhere else in the city.
What a treasure! We were thrilled to find a centrally located spot, with easy parking and charm. This hotel is a great value, we had a king Room for $169 that was beautiful. We did not have a view but were only staying for the evening anyway. The staff was knowledgeable, and personable, the rooms are classic Cleon and tasteful. The wine and cheese from 5-7 was great and very good! Totally exceeded all expectations!!
review for the Deluxe King room (non-smoking)
THE +'s: great old-world ambiance and decor. very friendly and attentive staff. wonderful neighborhood and views (ahhh, the charm of pacific heights!). within walking distance to decent eats without losing the quiet of a residential area.
THE -'s: building is a bit old. but then, since i prefer more modern decor, this is more just a personal preference. some of the rooms located near high-traffic areas might be a bit too noisy for those who need their peace and quiet.
SUM: definitely would recommend to anyone looking to escape the day-to-day.
The perfect hotel in San Francisco if you're looking for a peaceful and polished urban retreat, particularly if you've lived in the city before and know it well. If that's you, it gets five stars. However, if you're new to the city, or are looking to be in the thick of it all, or just generally like things like Tenderloin street noise and a hotel bar with thumping house music, there are better options.
The staff at the Drisco is great --- tell them in advance that you really like beautiful views, and if they have availability, they might just upgrade you to a suite with sweeping vistas of the city and the Bay. (And at the mid-week room rate of $169, that was a steal.) Run in the Presidio, shop on Fillmore and on Union, and eat dinner at Garibaldi's, all within a few blocks. Plus you get a free stair-master workout when you walk back on some of the steepest blocks in the city --- try not to feel too guilty when you hail a cab for three blocks!
Stayed here last weekend for my husband's birthday. Overall, Hotel Drisco did not disappoint. It has old world elegance minus the stuffiness found in some old world hotels. The staff was extremely accomodating and pleasant without seeming overbearing. The location is lovely...on a very quiet, upscale street in Pacific Heights. Our bed was very comfy, sheets soft. We were stunned at the fact that we were not once awoken by street noise. Honestly, it felt as if we were staying at a hotel in the countryside rather than in the middle of SF. It was that quiet!
While this was a lovely hotel...I wouldn't rank it as one of the top places I've ever stayed.
* I tend to prefer more modern decor and a slightly more casual environment.
* I also like to know if I happen to be hungry "after hours," I can get food delivered to my room instead of prowling the streets looking for a late-night takeout joint.
* Our morning shower was unfortunately tepid which does tend to put a negative spin on the day (at least for me).
* And I can't say I was that blown away by the continental breakfast--yes, it was good but I personally didn't find it to be anything out of the ordinary (aside from the delicious fresh squeezed OJ).
That said, I most certainly would stay here again and we will be recommending this hotel to my in-laws who travel out twice a year from Ireland to visit. I imagine this hotel would most appeal to Europeans and older folks...or anyone craving a peaceful haven in the middle of a very busy city.
Our family stayed here for the first time in November. We were attending the Drew School centennial. It was the perfect location since the school was only a few blocks away. Our night view was lovely from our beautiful suite on the quiet side of the hotel. Others in the family were happy with their rooms, too, and not all were in suites. The continental breakfast was better than most and service was excellent. We were impressed with the friendliness of the staff at the hotel.
After breakfast we took advantage of the time left to have a wonderful walk on a beautiful morning in the Pacific Heights area. Having grown up in the city, I could point out various mansions belonging to politicians and SF celebrities.
We can't wait to go back to Hotel Drisco. It would be so easy to have it as our base for attending theater shows and other events in the city.
The only thing I wish they had was parking but then again - I think San Francisco is best visited without a car.
The Drisco is nestled in Pacific Heights, walking distance to Union Street, Fillmore and many green areas including the Presidio and Marina Green. Not to mention being just eight blocks from Temple Emanu-El.
The service is spectacular - the Ritz with a more comfortable attitude. The rooms are large especially the suites and the views are just quintessential San Francisco.
The evening noshes and wine are classy and help give it that old money, old manners sort of glamor.
We had our rehearsal brunch in the breakfast room. They arranged for the caterer and helped us with a "flower crisis". Everything was perfect.
Stayed here when I first came to SF. Not the best location for tourism, but great neighborhood and fantastic, charming hotel. Wine and cheese every evening. Fun lobby, friendly staff, elegantly decorated interior. Ample street parking. Nice views, great free breakfast. Seriously, I couldn't think of one thing that was wrong with the Drisco.
This hotel was almost perfect. The rooms were nicely decorated, some with great city views, they had great baths, a wonderful breakfast spread, and wine in the afternoon. They also had tasty chocolate cookies before bed. I also found the staff so polite and truly nice. The only reason I didn't give this hotel 5 stars is because of the location....which is really part of its charm. The problem is, if you want a cab on a busy weekend night, you aren't likely to get one easily. One more thing, there is a WONDERFUL playground a few blocks away. We would stay at the Drisco again - definitely.
My man and I "won" a gift certificate at a local auction for a night in a suite (S-Th) at the drisco. We stayed in an airy and bright 2-room suite overlooking Pacific, and we had a lovely time! The staff was friendly, and even though we were barely a mile and a half away from home, we felt like we were worlds away (Pac Heights'll do that to you!). The aperitif service was a big plus, as was turndown, the continental breakfast, and complimentary access to the Presidio Y (take a lock if you want to use the locker rooms!). We tried Garibaldi's for dinner, and while a little on the loud side, it really complimented our "trip." I'd recommend the Drisco to anyone who truly wants to experience that ol' San Francisco charm.
An out of the way location, but perfect if you are looking for a quiet, romantic destination in the city. The rooms here are large and have great views. They also manage to be elegant without feeling stuffy. In addition to complementary coffee & tea in the lobby, they also serve great mulled wine during winter months.
i absolutely love this hotel - very charming. we stayed in the two bedroom suite for my friend's bachlorette party... the room was perfect! great view, decent size... it wasn't a huge suite, but it was just what we were looking for.
when you first enter the suite, there is a looong hallway that led to the main living area and master bedroom... we spent most of our time in the living area and i'm sure we were being super loud. but we just shut the door to the hall way and partied away and no one could hear us!
it was great that we didn't disturb anyone and had a BLAST! :)
We checked in the night of New Year's eve and it was all bad. The hallways smelled musty like a nursing home and the room we check into was room 109. DO NOT STAY IN ROOM 109. It is by the stairway and elevator, we heard everyone walking by and all of their conversations. The walls are so paper thin that you could even hear the people at the front desk. We didn't get an ounce of sleep even though we had drinks before coming home. By the way where's the mini bar???!! Beautiful location but the room is definitely not worth the $260/ night!!!
If you want an elegant, but subtle, hotel to stay at while in SF, check into Hotel Drisco in Pacific Heights. I stayed there & it was peaceful luxury. Loved it.
We just got back from a one night stay in a suite at the Hotel Drisco. We were very happy with the hotel and the accomodations. The hotel is beautiful and the staff were friendly and helpful. They don't charge for parking, which eliminates about $50.00 from your trip. They have a nice continental buffet in the morning and 24 hour coffee and tea service. My only complaint was the noise from the street. We were on the 2nd floor and we heard every car and truck that went by. We also heard people talking on the sidewalk below. We were on the Broderick side of the hotel and the street is steep so cars need to gun their engines somewhat to get up the hill. Maybe the Pacific side is quieter. I would go back but request a room on the other side in the interest of a good night's sleep.
The hotel is located in a beautiful neighborhood so there is lots to do in walking distance. Nice parks, lots of shopping and restaurants and great 360 degree views of the city.
It's a nice change of pace from the typical downtown hotels.
