This is a great muni course, often in good shape, with challenging holes and a great course design by Robert Trent Jones.
What kills it are the employees.
If you aren't familiar with employees of Monmouth county municipal courses - their basic attitude is: "The Customer Comes Last". Often surly towards customers, they would never have jobs on private golf courses. They know, because they are working for a local county government that they answer to no one.
I have played this course more than 10 times, along with other county courses like Shark River, Charleston Springs and Howell Park.
A perfect example was my outing last Saturday. A very hot summer day, exceeding 95 degrees. There's a warning about no water on the golf course. I ask the people at the desk if there is a cart-person who will be working the course so I can get water. They tell me yes.
Just in case I use the vending machine to buy two bottles of water (at $2.50 each).
We go to play 18 holes, and see a cart-girl on the 4th hole. By the 4th hole i'm already done with my water and buy two more waters.
We continue to play - no cart girl shows up for the rest of the round. I'm dying. Really thirsty, and kind of upset. Even try to use the vending machine and they are out of everything by 4pm. Water, Gatorade, Iced Tea, Lemonade.
I talk to the golf shop person, and mention about the lack of water on the course. He points to a sign about no water is available. I told him that before even starting I asked if a cart-person was working. If I had known that I would see them ONCE in 18 holes, I literally would have drove to a local store and bought a 6 pack of water before I started playing on a 95 degree day.
My first suggestion was immediately shot down by the employee - "Maybe hire a 2nd cart-person?"
"No, sir, we don't control that - they aren't run by the county, they are separate from the course." he says to me in a very condescending tone.
I reply, "Maybe you guys can get a large bucket with ice and sell a few cases of water?"
"Oh, with everyone putting their hands in the bucket and spreading Covid?", he snidely replies.
"Well you could hire someone to hand them out, maybe - or just have employees do that? It can't be that difficult to sell water. The vending machines are all out.", I add.
"Sorry, sir, the vending machines aren't controlled by us, they are independent from the course.", he says with his government annoyed tone - like how DARE I suggest such an idea.
Bottom line. I love playing here, but hate the employees who work here. It makes it difficult to rate the course. The course itself is 4-5 stars. The employees are -5 stars. My rating would then be a three star for this. Sure, I will play again, but you really have to just be prepared to deal with the a**hole employees that work here.
Another quick example. If it is "Cart Path Only", and you have two wheels of your cart on the cart path and two wheels on the grass - the ranger will find you and give you a verbal warning: BOTH WHEELS ON THE PATH, SIR!
Again, it just seems that everyone here needs a training in customer service, but that would be a joke since they are all hired by the county and know that their jobs are never in jeopardy.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Oct 12, 2017
Beautiful golf course managed by the Monmouth county park system. I took my in laws over here for a 18 hole game and they had a great time.
It's well maintained outside on the field and the club house as well.
There are showers and lockers available for guests which makes things super convenient.
The staff that work here are also very professional and seem eager to help out. This places easily would be one of the top places in New Jersey to go golfing.
One thing I recommend is for guests to arrive early or on time. These people are strict about timeliness, so you don't want to hold up the schedule.
Overall though, it is a bit pricey but the environment and professionalism of the staff and players who are regulars make the time and money worth it. Definitely recommend this place for anyone interested in golfing.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - P C.New York, NY615919Dec 16, 2019
Noticed no review in 2019. Here's an update..
Course is in spectacular shape this year. I played 5x in 2019. Greens are well kept and pretty fast for a muni. Bunker sand is soft. Rough is just thick enough to penalize a wayward shot. With a county card you can get tee times if you are diligent about logging onto the website at exactly 8pm 7 days before you want to play. If you are 10 minutes late, you are out of luck, period. It is worth mentioning the elderly starter with the shaved head is a nightmare. You won't play here without having an unpleasant encounter with him at some point.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 4099642452Apr 11, 20157 check-ins
Nice Monmouth County course with a private club feel.
Interesting course layout, solid conditions given its April and it's been a bear of a winter.
Staff is friendly
I agree with the criticisms of the range
Hitting off mats, off the grass is always preferred
Tee boxes and fairways are in good condition
Greens are challenging
A round will a tee time and cart will run approximately $65 on the weekend
The course is definitely walkable
I prefer charleston springs but I enjoyed my round and will play here again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Robin F.Randolph, NJ1672Jul 4, 2020
The golf course is nice but there was a house blasting music so loud the bass went right thru you. Not conducive for golf. Would never go back.

This course is and excellent test and always in excellent condition. Monmouth County is a great place to live and they have the best courses to play with a county card. It's my favorite and I consider it my home course.

Being the Golf snob that I am I am fairly critical of courses and certainly will be more than critical if it is acclaimed to be spectacular. This County course is rated as one of the best public golf courses in NJ... was able to secure time via friend who lives in town and off we went.
Old NJ style clubhouse nothing very special... Advantage has driving range, though some sort of simulated mat with dirt was not really very good. You also could not get your tee in the ground on the practice range so hitting driver was an issue. Practice green was damp, bumpy and slow please don't tell me the course will be this way.
On to the course.. played the back 9 first which was much longer than the front. .. Actually a very nice layout with some very nicely maintained fairways with deep rough so deep you can't find your dam ball 3 inches off the fairway. ... Come on man shave that rough a tad... it is so penal, you have to hack it back to the fairway.
Traps were very good but of course public golf courses and the ettiquette of these people simply not racking foot prints drives me nuts.
Back to my pet peave... GOD HELP ME WHY CAN"T SOMEONE ROLL A PROPER GREEN.. Slow, then fast... Uneven to say the least, bumpy with no rhyme or reason to which is fast or slow ..... Ruined the entire experience with greens of this magnitude on a very nicely laid out course.
No Food & Beverages to speak of other than the cart girl... All and all a nice day but I won't play here again just because of the greens.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Chris H.Monmouth County, NJ01Jul 25, 2020
I have to say, the course has a nice layout and everyone loves the place. I've played here 4 times now, (2019 and 2020), and have not been impressed. The main issue is the greens, especially this year. Saying that they don't roll true is an understatement. There were literal WEEDS growing there. This is not the complaint about the grass being off-color, this is a complaint about WEEDS. Couple that with the fact that the course is so heavily played, and you get a pretty underwhelming experience (especially when you consider how highly regarded this course is). I'd much rather play at Charleston, Howell, or even Shark Hill over this course. (The greens are better at Bel-Aire!)
