The building was undergoing renovations during our stay but they never interfered with our navigation around the hotel. Our room had been newly renovated. The beds were comfortable with soft linens. As I am allergic to feathers, I put the feather pillows in the closet., leaving two pillows on the bed. The room was large and well appointed. I only wish the mini fridge had a small freezer. The iron and ironing board were in good condition and worked well. The decor is soothing and calm. The front desk folks were extremely accommodating and helpful. We were here for a Conference with luncheon and it was set up and well done. We would stay here again.

When I first drove up the hill, I was a little nervous. As this hotel sits behind an old blockbuster still has a sign up a little nostalgia for some.
Currently the hotel is undergoing renovations, so driving up at night you see a chained off area and it is dark in that area.
I arrived into the hotel about midnight parked my car with ample parking one complaint I have is that the parking lot does not have a ton of lights, which I am actually finding lately at quite a few hotels and not scum hotel / motels.
Like I mentioned previously this hotel is undergoing renovations.
The front desk lady was very polite and did not seem bothered that I had gotten there late like some others have another hotels.
They have signs posted stating that construction will start between 8 AM and 6 PM. I was given a room on the fifth floor it had recently been remodeled. Everything was in working order.
The bed was very comfortable and the sheets were not scratchy or dirty . The AC ran very cold and good water pressure in the shower. The room did not smell musty or of chemicals from the remodel.
There was construction on the fifth floor the next am, but it actually did not start until around 10 AM and I was not awaken by anything as I had already been on calls. There was no construction debris in the hallways, which is huge when other hotels are renovating at times.
Will book here again when in the area and was a great rate.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Erik U.VA, VA01Nov 1, 2023
Checked in on 10/28 and Summer was not having a good day as she couldn't say Hello or show us a smile. Work up Sunday AM and we both showered and went out sightseeing. When we came back to our room my wife went to shower and immediately let me know all of her hair care/makeup/medications/hairdryer/ and personal toiletries that she had next to the sink in the shower area were gone. We did find her hairdryer in the closet on the shelf next to the hotel hairdryer. My personal toiletries and medications that I had left next to the outer sink (which were in a TSA approved clear plastic bag) were also gone so we went to the front desk and let Tonya know and the best she could say is that there was "Nothing that she could do".
Monday morning we spoke to the head of housekeeping and all she could tell us was that something like this had never happened before and that none of her staff admitted to removing our belongings; and Tonya even insinuated that we both threw away our personal belongings on purpose. It makes me wonder how nobody touched our things but yet my wife's hair dryer moved from the sink area to the shelf in the closet next to the hotel's hairdryer. Maybe a ghost since its Halloween? I did escalate this to the hotel GM Tracey and she stood firm with her staff and that we were just making this up.
Beyond that issue the furniture in the lobby area is heavily stained and there were multiple areas of poor drywall/ceiling repairs, the smoke detector on the 4th floor elevator lobby is covered up with plastic, the high voltage leading to the AC unit on the 4th floor can easily be accessed by a child, the chairs in the bar area are significantly worn and gross, and the gentleman who was tending bar on Sunday evening definitely did not want us there. Also the phone in our room was from a hotel in NYC and when I brought this up I was told that was their corporate address. LOL? Overall one of the worst hotel experiences we've had in years as management didn't even want to think that our claims about our personal belongings being removed were real. I get it the hotel industry is all about the money but just maybe whomever "cleaned" our room saw our prescription bottles and thought they were going to score some good stuff but I hope they enjoy our cholesterol and HBP meds. Needless to say we'll never stay at an IHG property again.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Rusty D.Cave Spring, VA01Aug 5, 2023
Quite possibly the worst hotel experience ever. Booked a king bed which we never got. 8 am construction in the room next to us. And I mean wall drilling and sawing. On a Saturday morning. Office was unapologetic about it. Some of the worst customer service I have ever delt with. Would not say here.

I am so sorry you did not have a great stay. We would love to know more about your stay so we can better coach our teams on providing better service to our guests. We are going through a huge renovation right now, and we should be done before the end of the year. We would love to have you visit us again after our remodel is finished so you can check out our new look and get the great experience you should have received the first time.

My relative had an event scheduled at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood in the coming weeks. Unfortunately, my relative unexpectedly passed away a couple of days ago and will no longer be able to attend the special event planned. I understand that a contract was signed, I understand that deposits are non-refundable, no matter the circumstance, and I am grateful that Holiday Inn had the common decency to allow the cancellation of the contract, even though the cancellation fell within 30 days of the event (Force Majeure Clause referenced). What I do not understand is the lack of sympathy on the part of this establishment. We now live in a world where keeping a $500 deposit is more important than doing the right thing and returning it to someone. Maybe that person would spread the word about how compassionate Holiday Inn was in the event of a tragic loss. Unfortunately, by keeping this deposit, which I am fully aware is your legal right, you have shown a lack of class and have lost the respect of many, many people, because believe me when I say, word of mouth travels quickly. I fully intend to steer everyone clear of your establishment, because I don't want to refer business to an establishment that lacks moral character and compassion towards its guests. What will you use that $500 for Holiday Inn?? I can ensure you the widower could find many ways to use that money during this time of loss. Shame on you!

DO NOT STAY HERE! I was really tired after checking in (from driving three hours that morning) and decided to take a nap in room 218 on Wednesday August 8, 2018. I woke up after a few hours, went out, and came back expecting to have a relaxing evening and swim in the pool. So much for that. I look over at the bed and there is something CRAWLING. Find a bed bug, then ANOTHER one. I scooped them into a cup and call the front desk who then calls maintenance and a HALF HOUR later they still haven't shown up so to have to call again.
They finally come check it out, dismantle the bed, and sure enough there's a nasty little infestation hanging out in the box spring.
Long story short they end up putting me in the room NEXT DOOR that has a connecting door. Seriously? To make matters worse, all they offer is $2.75 in quarters and tell me to put my stuff in the dryer. I inform them that not all my clothes can go in the dryer and they "kindly" are coaxed into letting me dry clean the rest.
No refund or compensation was offered.
Even better, when I called to make the reservation initially, I got talked into some vacation getaway package that essentially dupes you into signing up for a deeply discounted future trip which essentially a ploy to get you to purchase a timeshare.
DISHONEST AND SEEDY! Avoid at all costs.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 12, 2018Updated review
I received a response from IHG but not the hotel. Are they afraid to talk to me? GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! Here is the email...
"Thank you for your additional correspondence with us.
We've received a contact from the hotel and was advised that they have already sent you an email along with a letter from a certified electrician that there was no issue found in the electrical outlet after inspecting it. Also, they advised that since there was no issue found with the hotel electrical outlet they cannot reimburse for the laptop. I understand that this may not be the immediate response that you're expecting and for that my extended apologies.
As IHG is not involved in the daily operations of our franchised properties, I have shared your additional comments with the hotel management and ownership, and encourage you to continue to work with hotel management should you want to discuss this further.

What is the use of employing people at IHG if the corporate "overseers" are not able to step in and correct a situation? I will NEVER spend another night in an IHG property! If you choose to be prepared for no help at all if something happens while you are there.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jan 10, 2018Previous reviewAs of this morning I have sent two separate emails to Mr. Rohan Patel, the GM of the hotel. He has not responded at all. IHG Corporate has responded, but has placed this issue squarely back in the lap of the management/ownership of this local property.
What a shame! A business that thrives/exists on serving others will not even respond to a customer. This should tell you something. Look at some of the negative comments posted here and other places about this property. Why would you spend your hard earned money knowing full well that if something happens you are just out of luck.
I know that the management reads these comments, so Mr. Patel please do the right thing. As I told you as we spoke in person at your hotel, it takes 10 satisfied customers to equal 1 dissatisfied customer. I will gladly update this review in a more positive manner if this issue can be resolved.Jan 9, 2018Previous reviewTo follow up...
I sent a complaint to IHG (the parent company for Holiday Inn) and they responded saying that they have forwarded my issue back to the General Manager and owner of the property in Roanoke, VA for a response, as is their policy. Each of the properties are independently owned so they are given an opportunity to respond while IHG is monitoring the issue. I was advised that they were to respond within 48-hours and that was 4-days ago. Granted this part of the process began on Saturday, but I would think that I would have at least received an email yesterday advising that they were looking into.
This property has already lost at least 3 times the replacement amount of my laptop in lost bookings from my company alone. You think they would get the hint by now.... Guess not.Dec 22, 2017Previous reviewIf I could give this negative stars I would!
I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights beginning on December 11th. After checking in I attached my laptop to the television in the room via HDMI cable and started watching Netflix. Noticing that the battery was low I attached the power cable and then the problem occurred. After plugging in my laptop there were sparks and both the laptop and the television went out. I packed everything up and headed to Best Buy at 7pm to get the issue taken care of. I stopped at the desk and advised the clerk.
The laptop was fried so I was forced to purchase a replacement for $1100.00 (a lower model than what I had). When I returned to the hotel the desk clerk said that the maintenance man had been in the room and checked all of the outlets and everything was fine.
Back upstairs I began to set up my laptop and decided to turn on the television. It was then that I found out that the television had been affected as well. I called the desk and told them what had happened to the television and asked if they could replace it. He said that the maintenance man would be up shortly. The room had that electrical smell, when asked, the maintenance man could not smell it. He reiterated that he had checked the outlets and they were all working fine. He replaced the television and left.
After speaking with the Assistant General Manager Mr. Patel about the issue the following morning he said he would look into it. Later that day he advised that they spoke to their insurance and would be calling an electrician. After several failed attempts to contact him after leaving the property he advised by email that the electrician had checked and all outlets were fine. Right...they were fine when he checked them. Others in my party experienced some unusual electrical occurrences, as did I the following night. They will not reimburse me for my laptop, but they will comp my room and banquet room for our next training event. The next training event has been cancelled and re-booked at a different property other than Holiday Inn. I will be in contact with IHG as this will affect our bookings at other Holiday Inn properties nationwide. - Ivan V.Orlando, FL1313May 8, 2017
Dried Semen on Headboard
Yes, you read the title correctly. I stayed at the Holiday Inn at 4468 Starkey Rd in Roanoke, VA on 5/6/17. On arrival to my room, my girlfriend alerted me to some disconcerting stains splattered across the bed headboard (pics attached below). Closer inspection revealed a series of protein deposits with dribbling streaks consistent with ejaculate now dried into cement.
I went to the front desk to discuss this issue and the housekeeper on staff was gracious enough to offer to come to my sullied room and clean the encrusted baby batter. Her attempts to clean the stains were appreciated but futile, as she did not exert the appropriate amount of elbow grease necessary to strip the fossilized sperm now become one with the headboard wood.
Meanwhile, the front desk guy's mind was obviously blown by this ordeal. He called his manager for guidance, who advised him he could offer a 25% discount on the room's rate. Considering my sleeping area was festooned with another human being's biological fluids, this proposal seemed a bit ungenerous; I declined the discount. Moreover, when I checked out the following morning, there was no apology or mention of this problem from the manager at the front desk. Not a single word.
So the dried come on the furniture was the worst offense, but there were others as well. When I arrived, before entering the biohazard suite, I was given a room that I discovered was in the smoking section (when I had specifically reserved non-smoking). Opening the door I found an elderly couple in their undergarments very surprised (and dismayed) to see me enter unannounced. I made a quick exit and returned to the front desk guy who, after actually consulting the reservation room listing this time, directed me to the correct (biohazardous) room. Once again, no concessions or apologies were offered for this incident.
Every seat surface in the room was also blotched with stains of a variety of hues, none of which I dared to closely inspect. I attached more pics as evidence.
Folks, there are many comparably priced options for overnight stays in Roanoke. I'd urge you to consider spending your hard-earned cash on businesses that emphasize hospitality and don't leave their rooms looking like a peep-show booth. Frankly, my perception of the Holiday Inn brand has been markedly downgraded after this experience. I know for certain I will never stay at the Holiday Inn at 4468 Starkey Rd in Roanoke, VA ever again.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Teresa M.Dublin, OH24150888Jul 15, 2019
I blindly purchased a night here on Priceline through one of the deals you find out where after you pay. Just stopping through for the night only, no bed bugs and a pool were the most important to us since I was traveling with my kiddos. I was relieved once I saw it was a holiday inn but terrified wondering what we were getting into once I read the reviews.
When we arrived, we were greeted by a very friendly, charismatic guest service woman. She found our reservation with no problems. I did specifically request a room that did not have a ton of aerosol used or complaints of smelling moldy or musty since one of my children has really bad allergies. It seemed to be no problem at all, she made a call to housekeeping and requested they do a quick walk through to reassure neither was the case. (Having worked in hotels I know this isn't an abnormal request). Once confirmed it was all good, we headed to our room.
Let me clarify the hotel did not seem dingy or dirty or worn out per other reviews. It is definitely old and I believe starred where it should be. We were in room 212. I had my girls stand in hallway with our bags while I checked it out for bedbugs and such. It was good to go. We were kind of in a hurry to get to the pool since it was only open for another hour. So off we went.
The pool area was very clean, the water was clear, I didn't see any reason that would keep us out so we jumped right in. My kiddos loved it! They have lights that change color while you swim. Who doesn't appreciate a pool rave. There were a few lawn chairs, not many and pool towels were provided. Once we burned some energy off, we headed back to the room for nice hot baths after a day of traveling.
This is where we had some issues. Black hairs in the bath tub, (we are all blondes) so I washed it out as I always carry cleaner (mom style), at this point I did not want to switch rooms, we were ready to bathe and go to bed. I went to retrieve the bath soap on counter, it was tucked into a folded washcloth opened and squishy like it had been used and purposely set there to show housekeeping didn't even touch it and so the next guest would know what a thorough job housekeeping does here - it was obvious housekeeping did not even lift the washcloths to wipe even the counter or else they would have found this gem. However I also noticed black short hairs on walls around bath tub too, ugh! So I wiped that down as well so nothing got on my kids. I'm telling you a moms job is never done - especially when housekeeping fails. But the kids enjoyed their bath. Once done I combed their hair and went to use the blow dryer and I think I was the most grossed out by this - black hairs all over the blow dryer too, on the handle and inside the holder. I was done cleaning for housekeeping at this point so I just used my own. Also, I want to add the toilet in our room would absolutely not flush. However it did flush in the morning. Mind you, housekeeping double checked our room before we entered.....
Tv time before bed. I pulled back blankets and sheets again to check for bedbugs (per previous reviews) and discovered nothing so we settled in. The beds were spacious and comfy. We had a great nights sleep.
We had a great stay regardless of hairs and no flushing toilet. The price was spot on. Management really needs to address housekeeping at this location as I think this is where most the complaints lay. It isn't a 4 or 5 star but not a 1 or 2 either. As long as your expectations aren't very high but above horrendous you should be fine.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brian K.Brewster, MA1004Jul 25, 2021
The hotel is in much need of a renovation! The bathroom had used soap and hair left in tub. They have a high standard of cleanliness policy on front desk and when I asked the front desk person about it he kept playing chess on his phone. I told him I wasn't happy with the cleanliness and that he wasn't answering my questions and he said I was being sarcastic. The person that did check us in what very nice though and did offer to change our room.
