I am the balayage highlights and ombré color specialist. I hand paint highlights that are strategically placed to look like your hair has been kissed by the sun. Learn everything you've ever wanted to know about the balayage technique. What's making it so popular recently? It's a skilled technique that hasn't been widely taught in the US until recently. Now it's becoming better known because all the models and A-listers are wearing it. Clients are seeing it on the catwalks and red carpets and want to get that finish rather than the uniform highlights that foils give. Does it require a lot of maintenance? Very little. It grows out beautifully and more naturally so you don't get an obvious regrowth line and and can wear it for longer between appointments. All you really need to do is protect it as you would any other colour: use a colour protecting shampoo and conditioner, regular treatments and heat protection when styling. HERVE - The colorist is known for his natural look, he creates a look as natural as a child's hair, a master of blending style with timeless technique. And yet he is known for creating just the right shade for everyone who sits in his chair. Whether it is the perfect baby blonde, a deep mahogany brown, or a fantastic cedar red, you can spot Herve's signature look from a mile away.

I started my hair journey with Herve about 4 years ago. I have ethnic mixed girl hair super thick and was not taking care of it. I was getting weaves constantly and never letting my natural hair breathe. It was matted and dry my first session was two days because my hair was in such bad condition! Herve stuck it through with me. He gave me my first keratin, a relaxer, a beautiful cut. I had NEVER loved my natural hair until him!
I decided to go blonde and I won't trust anyone with my color now. He is an artist! He truly understands color and making it look beautifully natural. He always does his best to listen to what I want.
Herve moved away and recently came back to the Bay Area. I almost cried when I saw he was back because my hair missed him so much! Lol Did I mention he is an awesome person too???!
Herve can do it all. Amazing colorist, healthy hair with keratin treatments, and super model style cuts he gets it!

Went back to hervee for touch up base color and balayage I LOVE ITTT hervee use a conditioner masque hydratant by global keratine a must have my hair was very dry and this thing made my hair soooooo soft and shiny i love it thanks again :)

Wow. Made an appointment one day for 11am the next day. Showed up and there was no answer at the door and after ten minutes I just left! Never got a phone call either to reschedule or anything.
Waste of time.

I haven't been at the hairdresser in about 10 years, having had my hair grown and grown and grown... I ultimately could not stand brushing and detangling my long hair every day, and I decided I want to get myself a haircut for my 30th birthday, which was exactly one year ago. I also decided to not tell my husband and surprise him with short hair. Don't men love to see their women's hair being cut from long to short ;-) With Hervé, hell yeah he did LOVE it!!
I coincidentally passed Hervé's studio (the old one in Berkeley), and decided to go inside and check out Hervé and his prices. I immediately felt his professionalism and after a little chat was convinced he would be the right person to entrust my mane to.
What a great decision! He did exactly what I envisioned, made me look a few years younger and gave me the greatest birthday gift with his skills! I got compliments from everyone I saw after that, and the husband loved it too.
I recently went to see him again, and once more, he did a fabulous job. My hair bounces and looks voluminous, very happy.
He is now definitely my one and only hair dresser.
See you soon Hervé, can't wait to check out your new studio in Oaktown!

Earlier this year I originally booked an appointment with Herve for the 'Global Keratin' treatment (Hair straightner).... Note ladies - this is not the "Brazilian blowout" brand' ... same type of treatment but is a more natural way. Very shortly into the appointment I realized that Herve is a master stylist that certainly has expertise in hair texture and styles / cuts. I had 'aged' frizzy, dry hair w/ coarse grey running through (brillo pad!). After my first Keratin treatment - all I could do was run my fingers through my hair... it was silky and shiny... and remained so for many months. . I returned to Herve after 48 hours for the complimentary wash and blow out. Note that Herve discusses the degree of 'straightess you want' ......end result - hair with body & movement. With the different texture I realized I needed a cut. Herve discussed different cut options with me. He pushed my hair into different angles to demonstrate how different cuts / styles would change the shape of my face / accentuate cheekbones and down play my 'chubby cheeks'. I have received so many compliments on my hair . Most of all, after the Keratin & cut, my hair is truly low maintenance. If need be, I can leave the house w/ wet hair... it dries beautifully.... The results are even better when I do a quick blow dry. Shiny as glass. I returned 4 months later for another treatment. Herve certainly knows how to make us look fabulous!!! Herve is the sole stylist in his studio and is VERY accommodating with appointments - . Herve is down to earth, no snobbiness / pretentiousness here.... I absolutely highly recommend Herve...

Thank you Herve coming back to us. Herve is literally the only person I will let touch my hair ever again. while he was gone I shopped all over town to the supposed top colorists who all managed to fry my hair or give me streaky un even color. My hair gets really brassy so that was ongoing too. Total nightmare while he was gone!
Guess what... IM BAAAAACK because he is back. I feel like me again! he is a true artist as you can see when he does Balayage ( which is literally hand painting the hair)......
He is sweet , funny and cute to boot!

E M.Alameda, CA0235Sep 28, 2012I went to see Herve about a week ago for a Keratin treatment. He was really fantastic! And so affordable. He took his time and did a great job.
I've had the treatment elsewhere before and, in addition to costing two or three times what Herve charged, the treatment never turned out as well as Herve's. I was very impressed.
I also went back to have my hair rinsed and he gave me a great deal on a haircut. I told him I wanted Bridget Bardot hair and he totally delivered. I've never trusted anyone to just give me a haircut without explaining EXACTLY what I want and how much they are allowed to take off. But after I saw the results from my Keratin treatment, and the hair all the other women were walking out of his salon with, I just let him do his thing.
This guy is a hair genius. I am thrilled with my new hair!
As an extra bonus, he's got the most wonderful assistant ever, who gave me a back rub while I was waiting for my appointment. She's incredible!

I hate leaving this review but I have left Herve and want people to know what they are potentially signing up for. I saw Herve for a little over a year. Out of four scheduled appointments, three of them were totally messed up.
1st appointment: I knocked on his door and he turned me away because he was sick. I get it that things come up, but he couldn't have called me in advance???
2nd appointment: My only complaint about this appointment was I had to wait at least 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment start time.
3rd appointment: I had a 4 pm appointment. I finally got into the chair at like 5:15 pm. I warned Herve in advance that I absolutely had to leave his shop by 6:30 because I was meeting people and had a dinner reservation. He finished up with me at 7:45 pm. What really irritated the sh!t out of me, is that while I was waiting he did one of his friends hair. It wasn't even another paying customer. I left the salon insanely late and had a lot of people pissed at me.
4th Appointment: I showed up and he didn't even have me in his calendar, even though we had made the appointment together, in person.
I left and never came back. I'm sorry Herve, I know you're a hair genius, but please have some respect for your clients time. I always got compliments on my hair, but I think treatment like that is ludicrous. Especially for how much money I was dropping in there. (And BTW, I definitely don't think he is affordable... an $80 haircut is not "affordable" to me!)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 10, 2012Previous reviewI love Herve. I almost don't want to give him 5 stars because I'm afraid he'll get insanely popular and not be as available to me! heh. I've seen him twice so far for keratin treatments, cut and highlights. He does amazing work. He can look at you and design the perfect cut / color for your bone structure and coloring. His keratin price is AMAZING (and that's what lured me to him) and he'll often give specials if you get more than 1 treatment in a sitting. He operates out of his home, so it's more casual than salon (but he still has all the professional tools of the trade.) He's a great conversationalist and seeing him is always a fun experience.
EVERY TIME I get services from him, I get compliments from random strangers. I had an old co-worker who continually tells me that he's a genius and has changed my life. ;-)
