This place is so great! Don't have a produce section besides a few select items in the fridge but Id be willing to bet they have just about anything else you could want. Looks like any other liquor store from the outside but on the inside it's a mini Safeway! And the prices are competitive with any other grocery store and are far cheaper than the Whole Foods down the road (and yes, this place does have organic products, we buy organic milk there). Plus, the owners are really nice people so I'm happy to support.

Always great service! Really great selection of food items, you won't go hungry. Good selection of coffee and teas to make at home to go with your cheese omelet (they sell eggs, cheese, hummus, salsa, 1/2&1/2 and more). Best ice cream selection! Wonderful variety of non-alcoholic, wine beer and other libations.
Gluten-Free cookies and sometime other baked items like crackers and cereals - Yes!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tsada K.Oakland, CA7952731Jul 6, 2007First to Review
Where else can you buy fresh-baked Ethiopian breads, Swishers, biryani mix, Peet's coffee beans, incense, eggs, Haagen Dazs, Hustler magazine, fine wine, condoms, mango chutney, and a 40 ounce Mickey's, then have an existenial conversation with a dopefiend on your way out the door?
If there were more places like this, the world would be a better place.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 15Oh no 0 - Phil D.El Cerrito, CA1712712Mar 6, 2008
Can't say enough good things about this store. A surprisingly good beer selection. Here are some things that this place has come through with:
Onions
Tomatoes
Bread
Brownies
Hot dog buns
Popcorn
Ice cream
Mozzarella cheese (many other kinds too)
Lentils (now I just buy any and all beans here cause they are cheaper)
Baked beans
Tomato sauce
Chorizo
The first night in my new apartment around the corner I walked by and one of the owners was brandishing a baseball bat, but they are super-nice to people who aren't junkies or rude.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Glenn K.Berkeley, CA66291Sep 26, 2016
I went out of my way to check this place out on a hot Oakland afternoon. The Yelp! reviews are filled with great descriptions. And indeed the selection of items in this convenience store is probably second to none. But in addition to enjoying of wide selection of stuff, probably more important is enjoying what you get. The two drinks I got were warm. The liter of seltzer felt like it was never refrigerated. The can of coke was barely cooler than room temp. I still like the place but I'll never buy a beverage there again - and cold drinks are the main reason I stop in convenience stores.

Our local corner store. I love the fact that they have all kinds of "ethnic" ingredients (chutney, naan, injera, hummus, etc.). On those rare occasions that I actually get off my couch to cook anything that takes more than 15 minutes to prepare, it's good to know that this market is bound to have everything that I need.
There produce section is kinda sketchy, and the prices are a bit high, but at least we know where to go when we run out of beer, chai, or ice cream.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mark G.Borrego Springs, CA014017Sep 13, 2013Updated review
Market will re-open Wednesday 9/18/2013!!!
If you've been worried about what happened to this excellent little corner market which has been closed for the last few weeks with no sign indicating what was going on, well have no fear! You're favorite corner market is coming back and better than ever! I ran into the owner out in front this Friday evening. He's the same guy who owns the really excellent Oasis Market on Telegraph also. The market will re-open on the 18th. And the really cool stuff he told me about is that he plans to also open a Middle Eastern grill/deli like the one at Oasis (with a bit different menu though, he said). That will be in the space next door on Grand Avenue on the other side of the building stairs. Another place even closer to home for me to get excellent falafels and shwermas! Also, not really appealing to me but I'm sure this will be popular: he's going to open a hookah lounge in the building upstairs utilizing the patio on the roof above the market.
I have sooo missed Grand Perkins/Lake Merritt Super during these few weeks while they've been remodeling. Can't wait for them to re-open and to check out the grill!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0May 24, 2013Previous reviewThis is an excellent corner market! There's not too much to add that others haven't already said: not only can you get the usual quick-mart items here, but they have lots of international foods available. Others thought the prices were a little high but I dunno, they seem okay to me. Not bargains for sure but hey, it's a corner market that you can walk to in 5 minutes from your apartment, right? Note the sign out front says "Lake Merritt Super" not Grand Perkins Market.

I live about two blocks away from this gem of a corner market. Great store. Great selection of "quick items" and international staples (fresh injera delivered daily). Sam the owner is wondeful- he's friendly, good at making you feel welcomed and appreciated as a customer.
This is the epitome of a neighborhood establishment that feels good to patronize. Thanks Sam!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Callie K.Portland, OR41368111Jul 29, 2008
A five minute walk from my house. Yes, please, thank you:
Mint IT's-ITs.
Banana split flavored Häagen-Dazs.
Nag Champa incense.
Decent varied beer/wine selection.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - jasmine o.Hayward, CA391216Jan 17, 2017
I found my corner store version of "cheers" in my neighborhood! Definitely the place "where everyone knows your name"! A nice family run corner store with great employees. Everyone is always willing to chat while you look for your lotto tickets, cigarettes, and snacks. I always find a few gems here, with some organic snacks, and Mid East treats. Great wine selection!!! The family has been here almost 30 years, and are always so welcoming when I come in.
