    About the Business

Established in 1976. Gelato classico started in 1976 as a family-owned gelateria in North Beach—a neighborhood also known as San Francisco’s Little Italy. Word quickly spread about the hand-crafted Italian-style ice cream and lines were soon out the door. Our shop is still located in North Beach.

Stopped by while waiting for Tony's Pizza. The flavors we had today were Raspberry and Lychee, which complimented each other very well. Wished the portion size was a bit bigger.

I was in the neighborhood for Golden Boy pizza and saw this little gelato shop when I parked. The service was friendly and the gelato was delicious. I got the chocolate dipped strawberry and vanilla bean flavor. The person who helped me informed me it was happy hour so I was able to get a medium for the price of a small. No complaints :)

I don't believe I saw a place go eat so it's a grab and go kind of place.

      Yum

      Gelato as it should be!

I live in the neighborhood and have been patronizing Gelato Classico Italian for many years, so I may be somewhat biased when I say their gelatos are simply awesome! If it wasn't for my futile attempt to keep my waste size in check, I'd be visiting the store a few times a week, especially over this warmer weather spell we have been having in San Francisco.

Over the years I have tried many of their flavors. My top favorites are Pistachio, Caffé Mocha, Green Tea and Tiramisu, but they have a long list of flavors on their menu and one is likely to find a few that they like more than others. I will add a link to their menu at the bottom of this review.

The store is located on Union , just up the street from Washington Square Park. On a nice day, one can get their favorite flavor and park themselves on one of the park benches while enjoying their gelato.

On this visit I tried a new flavor, Coconut Macadamia Nut, and loved it. The crunchy Macadamia nuts definitely add to the flavor. If you like both Coconuts and Macadamia nuts, you should try it. They do give you a tasters, so you won't be taking too much of a chance. Taste it and decide for yourself :-)

COVID-19 Vaccination Checked for Samples. Expansive Gelato & Sorbet Selection. Cups & Cones Affordable for SF. Tuesday Gelato Special. 10% Off with Yelp Check-in. Okay Gelato at Best, Pretty Great Sorbet. Free, Lot, & Metered Parking. Hours Vary. See Below for More Info:

      COVID-19 Vaccination Checked for Samples:
If you would like to have a complimentary sample then proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required (i.e. your COVID-19 vaccine and id or drivers license). However, vaccination is not necessary if you solely enter the shop and buy gelato or drinks.

      Expansive Gelato & Sorbet Selection:
The selection of gelato and sorbet at Gelato Classico is expansive. Gelato flavors are birthday cake, burgundy cherry, cappuccino chip, chocolate covered strawberry, chocolate hazelnut, coconut macadamia nut, cookies & cream, cookie dough, coppa mista, crème brûlée, dark chocolate, double espresso bean, ginger, key lime pie, mint chocolate chip, pistachio, pumpkin spice, rocky road, salted caramel, s'mores, spumoni, stracciatella, strawberry fresca, tiramisu, and vanilla bean. The sorbet flavors are blackberry cabernet, lemon, mango, raspberry, and strawberry.

Cups & Cones Affordable for SF:
Gelato Classico Italian offers gelato and sorbet in cups and cones at affordable prices for SF. The small cup is 1-2 flavors and costs $5.3. The medium cup is 1-3 flavors and costs $6.05. The large cup is your choice of 1-4 flavors and costs $6.8. Conversely, if you get a sugar cone then one flavor is $5.25 and two flavors are $5.75.

      Tuesday Gelato Special:
If you like specials then you are in luck on Tuesdays at Gelato Classico. Medium cups that originally are $6.05 cost $5.30. Additionally, if you buy 2 cones or 2 large cups then you get one FREE small cup.

      10% Off with Yelp Check-in:
Upon checking-in to Yelp, you get a 10% off discount for your order you could use then and there or save for later.

Okay Gelato at Best, Refreshing Sorbet:
The gelato consistency is not too creamy and much more like ice cream. I have had many flavors from salted caramel to strawberry fresca, cookies & cream, hazelnut, and chocolate, all of which have been okay at best. On the other hand, I would recommend getting the sorbets, especially the mango, as they are so refreshing and make for a perfect warm weather treat. :)

      Free, Lot, & Metered Parking.
Parking can be hard to find in the North Beach, especially on the weekends. Free parking can be found in the North Beach and Telegraph Hill, if you do not mind some hills. There is a two-hour restriction Monday to Saturday if you do not have an A residential parking permit. Metered parking can be found along Columbus Street. Lastly, there is the North Beach Parking Garage located on 735 Vallejo Street with an hourly rate of $4 (non-peak)-$5 (peak hours of noon to 3pm) and flat rate of $30 for 12 hours.

      Hours Vary:
Even though the shop is open from 12pm-9pm on Monday to Thursday and 12pm-10pm Friday to Sunday, these may vary. I have stopped by for some gelato about a dozen times to find the shop closed before and during COVID-19. My friend and I went this past weekend, and after we got out dessert, we noticed a closed sign for over an hour around four in the evening on a Sunday. I recommend calling and asking if they will be open at the time you plan to visit before you make the trek. :)

Came here after having dinner in the area and was glad to see that the shop had a good selection of flavors, friendly staff, and affordable prices. I'm really glad that this Gelato Classico is open until 10pm on weekends because it's convenient for those like myself who have dinner in the area at a later time and are looking for something sweet to fulfill dessert cravings. I ordered the straciatella and banana walnut gelatos, while my boyfriend got the salted caramel - all three were fairly priced for the quality of the gelato and pretty good!

I cannot speak to the quality of the gelato here because I was ordered to leave multiple times, in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
I walked in yesterday with my wife and my small service dog, wearing a harness and secured in his carrier. The man at the counter immediately told me I needed to leave, in front of a crowded shop of people. I told him twice that I am disabled and my service dog is allowed to accompany me in public. He asked me to show a card or a badge or a vest - which the ADA does NOT require - and I told him that he was going against the ADA, and he insisted that I leave the shop.
I had been enjoying a lovely date in North Beach and left feeling humiliated, excluded, and in a very dark place. I was up half the night obsessing over it despite my best efforts. I hope the owners of the store see this and learn from it - I'm including excerpts of the ADA which make clear that this behavior was against the law. I hope that no other disabled person has their day ruined like this, because it's hard enough out there - I can't believe I wasn't allowed to remain in the shop for the sixty seconds it would have taken to purchase our gelato and go on with our date, because someone felt so strongly about putting a disabled person in their place.
Definitely one to avoid if you're disabled, or have a sense of solidarity for people who are!

This place was delicious!!! I was pleasantly surprised by how light and creamy this gelato was. The waffle cone was also super crunchy and not too sweet. The only reason I docked a star was because this place is pretty expensive but I guess that's what you get in the city. I would definitely come back.

My favorite flavor was definitely the stracciatella but I love a vanilla chocolate chip anything. My friends both got mint chip and they loved it too! :)

Saw pretty good reviews and was excited to try this spot. There was a decent variety of flavors. Tried the tiramisu and pistachio. Both were melting when served and not as smooth as I thought it would be, which was a little disappointing. The pistachio gelato had a lot of pistachio pieces which was a nice though.

Vaccination required to sample flavors. There's a special on Tuesdays where you can get a medium cup for the price of a small cup ($5.30).
