An excellent restaurant not too far from the main drag in Vienna. I stumbled upon the restaurant with my group while trying to find some dinner after a long day of touring the city.
The restaurant is very cozy and you may have a 5-10 minute wait but the staff at Gausthaus Pöschl are very welcoming and will do their best to fit you in. The staff speaks both Deutsch and English. If you are feeling adventurous, they were in good spirits about me trying to utilze my knowledge of Deutsch:). I can't speak about reservations as it was close to our hotel and as a group of four we were able to walk in twice on different nights with no issue.
The menu is compact at only a page but diverse enough that there is something for everyone. The wine lovers might fare better here, but beer drinker fear not. They have a unfiltered beer from Augstiner which I equated to a pilsner and an Ottakringer which was darker beer which tasted akin to a lager.
My entree consisted of the Braised Sirloin with Rosemary Potatoes and the Hearring Filet with Pumpkin Rosiotto. Both dishes were outstanding from the presentation to the quality of the ingredients. If you have room, I highly recommend the Chocolate Souffle! As a chocolate lover, it is a dessert to remember!
I will return here when I am in Vienna again. Gausthaus Pöschl treated my group and like long lost friends and that did not go unnoticed! It you want to escape from the touristy part of the city and mingle with the locals, this is the place to relax and unwind!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Tony W.Key Biscayne, FL1036820Nov 25, 2023
This place was super busy on a Saturday night but the maitre'd said to come over and he'd figure a way. A 10-minute wait and we were sweated at the bar. The Austrian classics were delicious- goulash, schnitzel and dessert was the piping hot kaiserschmarrn. A bit noisy and cramped, but the staff were friendly and the bartender happy to answer questions about the local beer, Ottakringer Rotes Zwickl, which was outstanding.
If you're looking for a tasty and authentic little place this is the spot - but definitely check about seating in advance. It's popular with locals - for good reason!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 1997136Sep 27, 2023
What a find! Slightly away from the tourist hub, this cozy restaurant is just the place to enjoy local food, beer and wine. We enjoyed two soups and the schnitzel - everything was delicious and in large portions. The local white wine and local beer was also tasty! Service was perfect - welcoming of tourists, when we were there, it appeared only locals were dining. Great place to Austrian food in an unhurried, atmosphere. Highly reccommend!

Just stopped in to sample their brews. Very cramped seating at the tables and the bar is tiny. They brew, but apparently only 2 kinds. They were described as "clear and cloudy." Both were "meh."
The bartender was brusque and didn't want to be bothered by Americans.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 2 - Steven B.Perrysburg, OH804137Jun 28, 2023
Lovely place, small and quaint, with local food, wine and house made brew. We had both beers and they were traditional in style to the area, and pretty solid (if you're an American coming here and expecting craft brews like in the U.S.A., you're the problem). We tried the schnitzel and it was one of the better ones we've tried while traveling the area, but not the best. The biggest complaint was the breading was coming off very easily. Other than that, the potato soup was absolutely delicious, as was the potato salad. We tried 2 local Austrian wines with meal, bartender's recommendation, and they were very solid and reasonably priced. Would recommend and visit again!

this place is more like a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
one of our favorite meals in vienna.
Delicious, decently priced and cozy restaurant feeling.
We didn't make reservations, but we got lucky and got seated right at the bar. It was crowded the night we went, but service was fairly quick.
We got goulash, schnitzel, and some pate. We also got beer and some lemonade.
Everything was delicious and the food was very filling.
I really liked how simple the schnitzel was. The breading and the amount they served was great. They provide half a lemon to be used on the schnitzel, and it made it pop. the schnitzel also came with some sort of potato salad, and its very different than the american potato salad we're used to.
The beef goulash was savory and the bread they give you is great to soak up the sauce.
I wish i got a salad dish, as everything was a bit heavy.
Definitely will be back when i return to Vienna.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 2 - Jake L.Austin, TX01Mar 16, 2024
Hates any English speaking patrons, good luck getting served and if can manage to get a table expect to be treated as second class.
