I have been here so many times and I'm so sad its closing. The people already knew what i wanted to order when I would walk inside. It was always fresh, fast and some what healthy. Better than Chipotle.
I have no idea why they closed but I'm sad. I have brought so many people here and their sad its closed too. If they open a new location, I would love to know because this was my fave place in the area. :(Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sal O.Downey, CA21214Jan 29, 2010
I just visited Free Beans for the first time and I must say the first two foods I tried were very good. The steak taco and fish ceviche were great! They have a bit of a tangy taste, something different than the usual taco but certainly good.
Their menu display was a bit confusing to me as they don't have the usual menu item and price but a bunch of big photos and generalized items.
The service was great as well and I am going to return in the near future to try the rest of the stuff, specially the barbacoa burritos.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mike D.Downey, CA2725348Jun 22, 2012
I used to pass this little spot every time I used to visit my gf. I had always wanted to try this spot but never actually stopped by. Today I decided was finally the day I would try Free Beans. Man the carnitas are delicious and its hard for me to find a spot with some good carnitas. The chicken is also fantastic. I got the mixed bowl which is a lot of food for less than $6. Every ingredient they put in the bowl is awesome. The chipotle sauce is a home run.
I will definitely be going back. In fact I am taking my little brother there tomorrow for a little graduation lunch.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 3, 2012
It's about time we had a healthy choice but delicious Mexican Grill. Try their pastor & barbacoa it's "para chuparte los dedos" but they have different types of meat like chicken, carnitas, asada, shrimp & fish. It's comparable to Chipotle but with way more choices. They got ceviche, cocktails, tacos, combos, burritos (wraps), tortas (subs), bowls, salads, different types of rice & beans, and a kids menu. A salsa bar & soda fountain. They got friendly service, my 1st time there I didn't know what to order and they started giving me samples to make it easier for me to decided. The food is super fresh, the service is fast & friendly, and the prices are very inexpensive. They got plenty of seating & parking in the back.

I was greeted by the staff upon walking in from the parking lot in the back. And immediately was introduced to the menu items. He was very nice in explaining that all the ingredients were fresh and even let me sample some of the ceviche and asada.
My friend and I used the summer coupon and got an asada wrap (which was huge!) and chicken and asada nachos. It was sooo good! I have to say I enjoyed it better than Chipotle!!! And their chipotle sauce was yummy! Really good flavors and really good pricing. Will definitely come back, maybe introduce it to my co-workers as a new lunch spot! =)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nancy K.Los Angeles, CA67742Sep 4, 2009
Uhm...How do I express my feelings for this new restaurant...
I FUCKING LOVE FREE BEANS!!!!
ahhhh~ So I was greeted with a coupon/flyer on my door for their new opening and it had a 2 dinner meals with 2 drinks for only $11 as well as a 50% any meal. Being cheap and hungry, this was a great deal so I decided to drop by and check it out with my sister.
It was really easy to locate, and right when I step in, the staff/workers behind the prep table treat me like family and greet me warmly. The girl at the cashier tells me if I would like to sample some of their ceviche. and let me tell you... that it was FRESHHH and marinated to perfection. Mind you, this was the first time I ever tried it and I'm going back to get the whole shabang (the ceviche bowl).
Everything there is prepared freshly, with freshly chopped vegetables and they have everything from seafood, carnitas, chicken. They have such a variety of toppings as well, spanish rice, pinto/black beans, sauces and they are very generous with their portions and samplings! Gah, its so fresh and healthy. They have salads, wraps, bowls, shrimp cocktails, nachos for CHEAPP
I love this place...screw chipotle. (THERE I SAID IT.)Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Lisa V.Los Angeles, CA1163Oct 4, 2009
This place is fairly new in Downey, maybe about 6 months old. I work in the area so we received a coupon for 2 entrees and 2 drinks for like $10 bucks, so my coworker and I were there.
This place is great! The food is fresh and healthy. The shrimp ceviche is off the hook. You don't need to add a thing to it. The meat, chicken grilled shrimp, rice and beans are equally as delicious. We were instantly hooked!!!!
It turns out that they deliver as well, so for about a month straight we ordered and they delivered. So much so, they would send free chips and salsa because we were such good customers. I love little things like that. Plus, did I fail to mention again and again that the food is great!!!
Try this place, it will not disappoint.
Verdict: I love Free Beans!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Daniel F.Long Beach, CA171315Jun 22, 2012
I wanted to give them a 3, but couldn't. For the quality of food and the price it's really a 4-5 star place. First let's talk price.
I ordered the burrito ( I believe they call it a wrap or something like that here). It was about $5 and HUUUUGGEE.
So they have a sort of Chipotle style restaurant where you tell them what kind of food you're ordering, tacos, wraps (burritos), or whatever else and then you go down the line and add stuff to it like subway/chipotle.
I got a chicken & al pastore wrap, that's wright 1/2 and 1/2 added rice, grilled veggies, and declined the beans. You shoud've seen the guys face when I said no to beans... It was a stare of death as if I spit on his mom and kicked his toddler or something. Anyhow, as I walked pass the glare, I was thrilled with the $5 and change I paid then sat and ate.
The wrap was marvelous. Again, it was very big, a bit messy because they didn't close the ends (I guess that's why they call it a wrap). But overall very tasty.
I've been trying to go back and get friends to come with, but people aren't giving them a shot so far. Everyone i know that has tried it loves it, but I think it's just in a bad location. Park in the back and try it out trust me you'll enjoy it.
It's cheap yet Rich in flavor. OHhhhh you like how i did that?Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Julie K.Long Beach, CA714Apr 20, 2010
Very Good!
I went to Free Beans for lunch today based on reviews here on yelp. I work and live in DO, and I literally live down the street, so I was surprised I hadn't heard of this place. Anyway, the food was great. I had the shrimp and fish bowl w/ a 20 oz drink for $8.40. Perfect lunch! It comes with 5 or 6 shrimp, 2 pieces of grilled fish, rice, beans, and salad. Also they have my fave diet drink-Coke Zero! Yum thanks for the recommendation! Oh think of this place as a lunch spot-similar to Rubio's, only better and cheaper!!! Staff was very friendly, and you get a frequent visitor card where you get the 10th meal free. And another thing, they have 2 flavors of rice, and choice of either pinto or black beans. Awesome!!!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
