Chron.com graciously forwarded on an article for the best burgers in Texas and the brisket burger with pork belly at Folc made the top of the list. Being the dedicated Yelp reporter that I am and having found myself in San Antonio, I dutifully decided to conduct some field research to determine if this "best burger" rating was accurate. I'm not sure that "Best Burger in Texas" quite covers it. It's a little more serious than that. Given that I have a terrible memory I'm not willing to say this is the best burger I've had in my life, but it's comfortably in the top 5.
It didn't stop there, though. Folc does brunch on Saturdays and Sundays so in addition to this award-winning burger, since I stopped by on a Sunday I helped myself to something called "griddled pound cake". I have no words, only tears of joy. A few other things that I feel would be a crime not to mention:
1) They have a bloody mary bar that rivals any I've ever seen, and it's staring you right in the face the moment you walk in the door. I'd already had my fill of adult beverages for the weekend when I arrived so I passed, but given the experience I had with the rest of the food, I'd be willing to vouch for the bloody mary's being a good decision.
2) The ambiance in this place is wonderful. It's simple but carefully thought through, and so peaceful.
3) Whoever picked the music the day I visited was clearly living life right. It was the quirkiest blend of every song you get frustrated with yourself for not thinking of first when you hear it ("aww man, I forgot about that song!"), all in one awesome playlist. So good.
I also got their "griddled shrimp" which is a fun little take on shrimp and grits, sans the eggs it comes with. Zero complaints, start to finish. I can't imagine anyone having a bad experience at this place. Give it a go, friends. You're welcome.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 5978506166Oct 18, 2015
Had brunch here once with a friend. It was a bit underwhelming.
Rumor has it the chef at FOLC came from the infamous fig tree. So I was intrigued and paid a visit. Restaurant was small and the location didn't give much of the "brunchy" vibe. We tried a steak dish and the pea flower toast. Steak was dry and had little flavor. When they learned about it, they were very apologetic and took it off our bill without us asking. The chef himself came to talk to us. That deff says a lot about a restaurant. It shows that they truly care about their customers and want to deliver a great experience. Kudos to that!
I must say the pea flower toast was absolutely fabulous! The presentation was remarkable. It looks so pretty and tastes equally impressive. The peas were so fresh and you could taste the sweetness of the nature. Highly recommend!
Overall, FOLC has great potentials. I hope they do well.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 24, 2015
Had brunch with family this Sunday.
Overall the food was fine but nothing was spectacular. I had their version of the eggs Benedict and the poached eggs were a little too underdone. My husband had the biscuit sandwich. I tried someone's crab scramble and that was okay. I felt the food was a little under seasoned and it was not served hot. I would say it was luke warm. The buscuits were a little on the dry side and crumbly, The mimosa was delicious. We also tried the sweetbreads and those had such a unique texture. Crispy on the outside but soft on the inside- we had that as an appetizer.
The place is relatively small and I don't think they necessarily keep in mind the groups of parties coming in and where they should seat people. We were a table of 6 adults and they decide to put a table of 6 with two toddlers in high chairs with a third child running around right next to us even though there was a large table - on the other side of the room with no one around. Once the kids started wailing loudly- the experience was totally ruined- Most unfortunate.
As I noted on my tip- the sister bar next to it serves brunch on Sundays so if you want a more adult experience you may want to do that instead.
Overall- that was our experience and I am glad I tried but next time it will be brunch next door.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Aug 27, 2015
A very trendy place. Chalkboard signs that scream hipster hangout. Even more so with offerings like morels and pea shoots on toast. I think it's very interesting and worth trying simply because the food really is delicious.
Anything on toast is delicious. Well, except for the flowers. They were kind of bitter. Otherwise, I think the toasts have inventive flavors and are gorgeous. The fried chicken with chimichurri sauce is definitely worth the wait. Very moist and tender. The meat itself could have used more salt but I didn't mind too much. I asked for some siracha for the chicken but they didn't have any (that should be a staple everywhere people!) so they gave me coffee infused mayo. It was an incredibly poor substitute for siracha. Even for an adventurous eater like myself, I thought it was very weird.
My brother got the lamb burger and I thought it was better than the chicken. The fingerling potatoes were so delicious! I splurged for dinner once and got the dry aged steak with marrow butter. It was really not worth it. I've definitely had better steak elsewhere.
I would check out the place for the brunch options. Skip the steak and beef clod.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Tanya L.San Antonio, TX30589310Sep 26, 2016
We came here for round two of my birthday weekend and had a mediocre experience. From the reviews I read, I was expecting a fantastic experience but I am probably to frugal for a place like this. The food was delicious, but no better than the average Yard House or Cheesecake Factory.
The disappointment really came with the portion size in relation to the cost of the food. We may have been too hungry to try Folc for the first time but we really thought we were let down by the amount of food we were given. The red fish was the size of a paper folded in quarters and came with 4 or 5 brussel sprouts and a few pieces of squash finely chopped for $30. We also ordered tuna poke and it was JUST raw tuna with nothing else (yard house is better in my opinion) for $15. The presentation was great but that was about it. This was my first and last time visiting because I am a hungry poor person so this is mainly just not my style.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dylan T.San Antonio, TX40135Jul 8, 2016
Stopped by Folc on a Thursday evening with moderate expectations. The positive reviews from fellow Yelpers had me curious, but the cover of the book was not quite as appealing. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, atmosphere, and originality.
The exterior of the restaurant isn't extremely easy on the eyes, but don't let that stop you. The atmosphere and decor is rustic yet modern, and is fairly intimate in terms of space. It was nearly dead during our visit, but it seems like there is a fairly large brunch following. We were seated near the kitchen area and were able to see a fair amount of the prep work that went into the dishes, which is always entertaining.
We decided on the bibb salad, pea toast (following advice from previous reviews), and the fried chicken (half chicken). The salad was unique and tasted fresh, albeit a little one-note. The lack or accompaniments definitely left you wanting more. The pea toast certainly lived up to the hype, although the amount of "greenery" arranged on top could have been dialed back in my opinion. The bread was phenomenal and the homemade ricotta and peas were light and flavorful. The fried chicken, however, was out-of-this-world good. The waiter mentioned that it was voted best fried chicken in San Antonio in 2014, and I can see why. Super-crispy skin while not greasy, delicious tomatillo sauce, and a hint of grilled lemon really made this dish pop. This was definitely the item that would get me back here.
Overall, a very well-done, quaint restaurant with fresh ideas and quality food. Pricing was fair, and the atmosphere was fantastic. Would definitely recommend!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Aug 16, 2016
I went to Folc on a Saturday night with a friend, and the wait was 2.5 hours. From the little time I spent actually inside the restaurant, it seemed like a nice, spacious place to have a good meal on a weekend. However, the wait was way too long, so instead of being seated inside the restaurant, we were seated in the connected bar - Park Social. Honestly, I think I enjoyed the experience a lot because of this. They had a happy hour going with $5 for specialty cocktails (I ordered two, bother of which were delicious).
As for food, I ordered the Folc Brisket Burger. I was told by some friends that it is "the best burger" in town, so I had to give it a try. For an $18 burger, it came with delicious roasted potatoes and a burger topped with egg, special sauce, and pork belly. As amazing as it sounded, I was honestly expecting it to be better than it was. It was definitely a great burger, but I don't think it was as good as Hopdoddy's (which is cheaper too). Folc definitely had one of the best pattys that I've ever tasted: juicy, delicious, made with real meat that crumbles on the tongue. They also made their eggs perfect for the burger. However, I feel like their buns could be a bit toastier and fluffier, and the pork belly could be a lot more tender (it was too chewy for pork belly, in my opinion). I would probably give it a 4/5, so not the best burger ever, but still good.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Jul 27, 2016
The drinks were fantastic extremely tasty and would definitely return for drinks. Ordered Pea Toast appetizer; toast bread with creamy ricotta cheese with peas mixed in and a mixed spring salad all over delightfully tasty with a cruch in every bite.. The famous brisket burger with pork belly was good; I may decide to return and order again; though to have to say I got more fat then actual pork in my burger; a little disappointing; the potatoe fries had an okay taste. The second dish oredered was the AHI TUNA POKÉ with fried rice paper, onion ash; super plain; had to ask for some raw veggies that complemented the raw tuna, I will say the chef did sent out a bowl full of perfectly matched veggie..

Went here for dinner. Fun menu. Small portion options to try many items with friends. Beautiful presentation of food. Was on the fence with the charcuterie board could have done without. Bibb lettuce salad was great !! Green peas toast was different but I would order again. Parisian gnocchi was amazing !!! Usually not a big gnocchi fan but this was delicious. Nice intimate setting with a bar connected next door. Ordered a bottle of wine and there was no way to keep chilled at table ...waitress would bring when necessary.

Had a really enjoyable dining experience here last week with a friend of mine.
We wanted to try a little bit of everything so we shared plates.
The Pea Toast & Sesame Fried Chicken Thighs were excellent starters. For our entrees we tried FOLC's award winning burger, which proved to be seriously one of the best burgers I've ever had. The pork belly topped patty on point. We also tried the Duck Fried Rice. Beautiful presentation and quite tasty.
Favorite thing about this place...the smell. The smokey, wood fire burning scent makes me feel right at home.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
