Food was really good but the front of the house really needs improvement. Came on a Saturday evening around 6:30 and the restaurant was 1/4 full. By 7 PM it was 3/4 full and the service really suffered. One guy was the bartender and waiter for the entire restaurant. I felt so bad for him - you can tell he was really stressed out. The owner was very nice but she was working so hard to. What they really need especially for the weekend business is additional help. None of the tables that were occupied and left was cleaned and it took forever to get our food and drinks. They need a dedicated bartender and food runners that can serve the food and take away the dirty dishes. We had to put our pile of dirty dishes on another table that wasn't cleared.
I noticed the customers who came in before 6:30 all had bread on their tables. There was none served to us and to the other tables afterwards. My two kids didn't receive any crayons or coloring books as another Yelper indicated.
The food was really good, but because of lack of service, most of the entrees came out cold/lukewarm - such as the hanger steak and duck breast. The french onion soup was decent but it lacked salt and broth was really light. The owner told us the chef wanted to make a healthier version of french onion soup - I guess that's ok. I really enjoyed the roasted half chicken and my parents enjoyed their rockfish. I recommend those two entrees. My daughter enjoyed the chicken nuggets- she ate all of them which is rare.
I hope they can fix these front of the house issues as it takes away from the overall dining experience.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Samantha L.Gaithersburg, MD3488321327893Aug 7, 2016
Ev & Maddy's is a French inspired cafe in Rockville Town Square. The restaurant has a red and black theme to it. On the wall of the wine bar, there was a wooden sign that said "A balanced diet is a glass of wine in each hand".
The restaurant recently changed their brunch menu. It consisted of breads and spreads, sharables sweets (e.g., crepes, pancakes, french toast bites, yummy donuts), variety of egg entrees (e.g., omelette, benedict, etc.), sides (assorted meat options, eggs any way you like it, toast, fresh fruit, corned beef hash, potato onion hash, and house salad), kids menu (e.g., grilled cheese, etc), and non-alcholic beverages (e.g., iced tea, fruit Juices, ginger beer, soda, lemonade). They also offer bottomless mimosas for $15.
Today's specials features quiches (e.g., ham and gruyere, spinach and feta), eggs benedict (e.g., lox), stuffed french toast, baked potato with bacon soup, and chilled carrot ginger soup.
It was my first time checking out Ev & Maddy's. My mom and I came to Ev & Maddy's for Sunday brunch. We ordered unsweetened iced teas and Mini Breakfast Crepes. When we arrived, we were the only party without food. It took 40 minutes for our food to be prepared. My mom's mini breakfast crepes consisted of spinach, grilled chicken, mushroom, and caramelized onions while my mini breakfast crepes consisted of spinach, tomato, mushroom, and caramelized onions. It was interesting how they cut a crepe into triangles so that they can be shareable among the party. Despite mentioning of pepper sensitivity, we felt that the content were pretty peppery and pretty salty.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Angel W.Arlington, VA907402193Jan 31, 2016
Ev & Maddy's originally piqued my interest based on the drink descriptions listed on the sandwich board outside the restaurant. Even though the drink menu enticed me inside, the lunch menu was just too sparse and bland.
Ev & Maddy's lunch menu offers a few Hors d'oeuvres mainly consisting of either cheese or meat. The fried quail Hors d'oeuvre costs $18. At that price point, it should be listed as an entree. They also offer two soups, some salads, tartines, crepes, and omelets. The overall offerings are similar to that of Le Pain Quotidien.
I ordered the Arugula & Apple salad with toasted walnuts, goat cheese, and herb cream. The salad was fine, but nothing memorable. My friend ordered the Roast Beef Tartine with remoulade and radish. Both of us agreed, this was an overall average experience.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Bob D.Rockville, MD22221136May 31, 2016Updated review
UPDATE: still great. Menu has grown and matured. We spent a delightful Mothers Day brunch here. We live the homemade breads and jams. The corned beef hash is excellent.
We have a neighbor moving and had a goodbye dinner for eight. It was a great meal. Everything was well prepared and served. Good times for all.
We love Ev & Maddy's.
My wife and I returned to Ev & Maddy's last night. We had not been in a couple of months. This young restaurant is doing good things.
Butter lettuce salad, onion soup, beef bourguignon were great, the duck breast was stellar. We drank a few glasses of decent Côte de Rhone. The atmosphere is "bistro" nice, if a little loud for a small place. Our waitress was energetic and delightful and her service was good.
We hope this restaurant continues to grow in terms of its dining room service. Bringing drinks before asking for the dinner order, flourishes like fresh pepper with salads, and skilled bus staff will make a positive impact. A bit more depth and creativity on the wine list would be welcome too.
This restaurant is worth your patronage. It is exactly what our area needs - it is family owned by a young couple that care about their food and customers. Make a reservation and enjoy!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 13, 2015Previous reviewMy wife and I returned to Ev & Maddy's last night. We had not been in a couple of months. Several of my most trusted yelp friends have reviewed Ev & Maddy's and noted issues regarding their customer service. Ever since, I have been a bit hesitant to jump in and give them a shot. This past week, I decided to take the plunge and go. After all ever since Ev & Maddy catered to the yelp elite event, I was intrigued about what they had to offer.
To make sure there is no confusion, Ev & Maddy's serves Noveau/Fusion French food. For my appetizer, I sampled the duck confit. Contrary to what you would get at most French restaurants, Ev & Maddy's version was shredded in strips and came with seasoned salad and cucumbers. I was a bit taken by surprise and I think the seasoning and flavoring worked very well with the exception that the duck was a tad bit too salty.
On the other hand, I was extremely impressed with my main dish, a medium rare hanger steak. It was cooked a perfect medium rare and had hints of balsamic glaze. All of the condiments, the cipollini onions, roasted cauliflower, parsnip purée were fantastic additions to the dish. I'd have to say this is my most favorite hanger steak that I tried in the DMV area so far and I highly recommend this to anyone who comes to Ev & Maddy's.
Thankfully for my visit, I had great customer service and I found the food portions to be adequate. For most, however, I could see that the food portions are going to be way too small and I see this becoming the number 1 complaint of people who will review Ev & Maddy's in the future. If you take into consideration the low prices and the expensive Town Center rent, it makes complete sense that they would have to limit the portions. You should keep this in mind if you decided to pay them a visit.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Elizabeth W.Washington, DC358226529Dec 5, 2015
There is a certain expectation, a certain way that you think food should look and taste when you go to a restaurant and this place did not dissapoint! French food at its finest!
The Garam Masala Duck Breast was perfect, The sauce was perfect, and a perfect size too. Check out How many more times can I say perfect?
My second mommy/foodie mom, chose the Boeuf Bourguignon and it was delicious. The beef was tender, the sauce was saucy and balanced. Her only complaint was there wasn't enough vegetables.
Lastly, the Ginger Creme Brulee was good, but it's the reason they only get 4 stars instead of 5. It tasted fine, but I guess when they said Ginger, they meant light on the creme and heavy on the ginger. My second mommy said the French press coffee was actually worth drinking though.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 8, 2015
Ditto what my brother and Hannah said, the front of the house, needs lots of work!! It makes me think about returning or not.
The decor:place looks nice, I think it's the same furniture from previous restaurant, but added some french bistro accents.
The food. Real good. Fine dining where every dish is less than $20. Great value and would have even tasted better if food came out sooner (took about 45 min to get our entrees) and warmer. My duck was semi lukewarm as was my brothers wife's steak. But the flavors and food tasted great. Skip the French onion soup though (needs lots of salt).
The service. POOR. One poor nice guy doing everything. Making drinks, serving food, taking orders for entire restaurant. I don't know why on a Saturday night they don't have a dedicated bartender (took forever to get our drinks), a food runner (maybe food would have arrived sooner?), and a busboy (our plates weren't cleared as well as all the other tables where the patrons left). Rather unsightly imo. With an added staff the owners wife can properly be a great hostess as people waited for quite some time being acknowledged at front door.
And we never gave us bread (the other tables did), no coloring books (previous review stated), clearing of our appetizer plates when entrees arrived, forgot my moms appetizer (it came out after we were all done with our apps but was comped), and no salt or pepper on tables.
I know this has been only opened less than a month, and sure hope their service improves by adding more staff on weekend evenings, as the food was really good.Helpful 10Thanks 0Love this 8Oh no 0 - Feb 21, 2016
This place is so hidden in the corner of Rockville town square! It's a cute little quiet French restaurant.
I got the French onion soup. To me it was a bit salty but still tasty with lots of onion in the soup. I also tried their chicken spinach omelet which i enjoyed! It came with an aioli sauce on the side. As a side you could choose fries or salad. I liked their Fries because they were semi skinny and crispy!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Feb 17, 2015
I was really excited to try out Ev & Maddy's, as it's owned by a husband-and-wife team, Chef Patrick Pak and his wife, Eunice. Chef Pak has cooked at other well-known DC restaurants, such as Blue Duck Tavern and Komi. They decided to open up a little French bistro, in the Rockville Town Center, and they've only been around since Feb 10th.
The hubs and I came here for lunch, and we made sure that reservations were not necessary (just in case!). When we arrived, we waited a bit at the front; I believe it was the wife who greeted us after she noticed us standing there by the door and were told that we could choose any table to sit at.
I really liked the high ceilings with the white-painted brick walls, showcasing black and white photographs. We were given the menu, and she told us to have a look over the drinks and such and left. The menu itself was limited, which I liked - they offer hors d'oeuvres, soups, salads, and tartines (which are served with house-cut fries), featuring items such as tarte flambee, roasted chicken breast, and a charcuterie plate. The hubs and I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited, and waited... we were completed ignored. The wife and the staff member were both busy having a 'wine tasting' up at the bar area - I saw some of the kitchen staff members, and I believe Chef Pak himself, who I'm sure had also noticed that we had yet to put our orders in. We tried flagging them down, but all the backs were turned from the dining area, as they were more engrossed in their conversation and their glasses of wine.
There was one other party who was sitting towards the back, and they also noticed that we were waiting with no service T___T I could have understood if the place was packed, or if we were hidden from an obstruction of some sort, but the restaurant was almost empty. Another patron walked in, who was never greeted, and she also was waiting to be acknowledged.
Both the hubs and I (me, especially) were extremely fed up that we just walked out, never even getting the chance to place our orders in (and, yes, the other patron was still waiting!). Bad service is one thing, but receiving no service? While this is a new restaurant, I just felt they should have stepped it up. A place being opened for a couple of days or even if had been around for years, first impression counts the most. I hope others have a better experience! I wanted to give this place a shot, but for now, I've lost complete interest.

A brilliantly simple, endearingly French menu with some modern twists. I stopped in for happy hour, and thus can only speak to the taste of the small plate offerings, but what I did have (well-balanced charcuterie, a pleasantly refreshing vichyssoise, and a mixed green salad with shaved parmesan and a tart but delightful vinaigrette) was enticing enough to warrant another trip.
If you happen to be wandering around Town Center, or are generally nearby and haven't been, do check it out. Reasonable prices, convenient location (if a bit on the edge of the block), and an interestingly rustic/industrial decor that manages to complement conversation and dining. Being a genuinely independent shop with a range of local offerings just makes it that much better.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
