Skokie Optical - Now a Part of Rosin Eyecare

It was due to the excellent reviews here that I went to Skokie Optical, not realizing that when Rosen took it over it lost all the aspects that made it such a fantastic optical place. They only take appointments here on Mondays, and the lab is no longer being used. We booked our appointments 2 weeks out, only to have someone call us a week before the appointment in August to reschedule to a week later. When we got there, we were warmly welcomed and the optometrist did a decent job. We had decent optical insurance. I used to work in the optical industry many years ago, and I found Rosen's model remarkably similar in its predatory nature. Rather than point us to the frames and lenses that would receive the most coverage through our insurance, the optician pointed us to the most expensive lenses our personal money could buy. We bought 1 pair of single vision lenses and 1 pair of progressives through the insurance, plus 1 pair of single vision lenses out of pocket. After the insurance was applied, the out of pocket for the insurance-paid glasses and those I purchased out of pocket were nearly identical--upwards of $300 each. Tack on another $600 out of pocket for the progressives after insurance was applied and the glasses were $1200+. When I asked the optician to convert the lenses over to what was covered, she argued that the total amount we'd save was a mere $40, which was disingenuous at best because that was the difference in out of pocket cost, per lens, but my insurance covered a higher proportion of the insured lenses than the specialty ones. When I asked what was remarkably better about the upgraded lenses, the optician said "you can see better out of them" with absolutely no further explanation about how, qualitatively, they improved vision. The bonus was when the single vision glasses took over 3 weeks to arrive. When I called to ask about them, they said this was standard timing for all glasses throughout the industry, which I know is false because even 20 years ago with an external lab glasses were delivered within a week unless they were really specialized, like glass trifocals. The progressives took 6 weeks apparently because the first make didn't pass inspection. We will not be back to Rosen and resume our search for an ethical optical place for next year. What a racket.

They handled everything and have a doctor onsite. They have an on-site lab, which is getting very rare these days. I had contacts the same day of my exam and glasses within a couple of days.

Eddy and his wife are very friendly make you feel welcome. I couldn't be happier with my new glasses.

Eddy, his wife Maria and Dr are WONDERFUL.
We were greeted very kindly by Eddy and Maria. Seen by Dr right away, he knows his stuff!! He did a number of tests on me and took his time.
Eye exam and frames are very reasonable.
I will definitely be back and will recommend always.

Love this place!!! Its one guy who is a trained optician. TRAINED and experienced.
When you compare with other big eyeglasses stores who do not train their people. Last time I went to one of those big box eyeglass stores and wasted so much time. It wasted the whole day and they had to redo them and it was not cheap. But Eddy Skokie Optical was really fast and has a glass lab right in the store so they are not sending them out to Texas to get your glasses done. AND NOT expensive. And think about this don't you want to spend your money to support local businesses in Skokie if you live in skokie

I've been checking my eyes at Eddy Skokie Optical for two years now. They are great and really, really cheap - only $25 for an exam. It's $40 for an exam and contacts fitting - and the service is very good. Eddy (the owner) and the optometrist both are very friendly and knowledgeable.

Wonderful service, great staff, good prices = a great place to come if you need a quick checkup on your eyes.

They offer a great eye exam price of about $35 (at the time of this writing). For that money, you get the whole nine yards with the optometrist (glaucoma screening, vision testing, lenes corrections, etc).

I was very pleased with them and will gladly be coming back whenever I need to update my prescription for my glasses.

Support local businesses! I have gotten two pairs of glasses from them over the years, and I am planning on getting a third one next year. Their selection of frames is better (read much more attractive) than that of a large store. If you have to wear glasses, make them work for you, not against you. The couple running this place is absolutely darling. Their shop is clean, airy, and spotless. Of note - they also can fix sunglasses, as I learned recently. Eddy did a superb job with my sunglasses, in terms of quality, customer service, turn-around time, and price. What more can you ask for ?

I have been going to Skokie Optical since they opened in 2002. They have a great selection of glasses on site and can order any glasses that they don't stock. Eddie and Maria are fabulous!! Very nice store and very friendly.

Nice people. Quick service. Prices are fine. The prices on their website have not been updated. I think their eye exam for glasses is about $45 now.
