Based on their hours: 5-stars. Compared to most food trucks in America: 5-stars.
Don't get me wrong - I love Whisler's, I love East Austin, I love the Paul Qui restaurants, and I love Thai Kun...but these are the palest black noodles I've ever had, and East Side King is almost always worth the walk.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Aug 18, 2019Updated review
Fried Chicken ftw!
Nestled adjacent to the outdoor patio of Whislers is a hidden gem - Thai Kun!
I'm reviewing after having most of their menu (an item or two to go). I've come to Whislers just for Thai Kun sometimes!
Grab a drink from Whislers and place a Thai Kun order out back. Enjoy your drink, a few buzzes later from the pager (and from your amazing drinks) you'll find yourself in pure mouth heaven!

Tasty Thai.
Takeout portions aren't always the biggest: my Khao Man Gai ($10; credit accepted) was just enough for dinner, though I wish I'd get a bit more for the price. Ingredients were fresh and tasty, and I'd get this chicken dish again. And again. My mind wasn't blown exactly, but my tastebuds were entertained.Helpful 17Thanks 0Love this 19Oh no 0 - Apr 3, 2017
On our first night in Austin, we decided to explore the Sixth Street night life and all the yummy bars and food. We were not disappointed! Thai Kun is a food truck located inside the bar, Whisler's, so if you have children with you, don't think they'll pass the security guard. We came around 8pm on a Friday night and it was packed! From the time we waited in line to order to the time we actually got the food, it took almost an hour and a half, no lie. It's nice that after you order, you can take your number and find a table to sit down and wait for the food to come, but because we ordered the pork shoulder, I guess it took longer for them to cook it. At least it's fresh!
We ordered some drinks from Whisler's while we waited, a beer and an old fashioned, with a candle flickering on our table. It was such a cute place to chill and relax at with strings of lights brightening the outside venue. When the food finally came, I was hoping it'd be bigger but much to my surprise, the pork shoulder, cabbage, and sticky rice was amazing! And they were not lying when they said it's spicy, IT IS SPICY. Thank goodness for the sticky rice which came wrapped in a plastic bag. It was really good and bland compared to the sauce and pork shoulder which was really delicious. Definitely come by with friends or a significant other if you want some downtime in Austin!
Also, for parking, there are nearby street parking for a dollar an hour or if you drive closer to Robert Martinez Jr street, there's residential free parking if you can find it!Helpful 8Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - 3716491112Nov 23, 2017
My favorite khao man gai (steamed chicken with rice and a sweetened soy sauce) is in Portland. My second khao man gai is here! The chicken was tender, moist, and cooked perfectly. The sauce was a great accompaniment to the chicken and the rice. It also came with a broth that was very rich. It definitely helps to take a bit of the rice and chicken and then slurp the soup, and continue as so.
My friend got the waterfall pork and it was well marinaded and flavorful. If you are into spicy food, this would be a great order. The first two bites were not that spicy but all of the spiciness must've been sitting at the bottom of the bowl because the last few bites were truly spicy.
Also, the food pairs incredibly well with the Asian-inspired cocktails at Whisler's. Thai Kun and Whisler's could not have paired a better team for satisfying my need to eat and drink!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 29, 2017
who doesn't love whisler's? I finally decided to try the food at their food truck outside. It was my birthday and we had already celebrated the day before so we decided to "take it easy here".
Had some kind of fried chicken and rice dish, pretty good.
would love to try more but it is pretty heavy in carbs. Maybe next time.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 404380316Jun 26, 2019
Great food truck in East Austin! This truck was so good, they made a brick and mortar location up in the Domain! Their dishes are super good, but in my opinion, the best ones are the hottest ones! Not all of their dishes truly resemble exactly thai dishes, but they are super good and reflect the same spices and seasonings.
If you like heat, you have to try the waterfall pork, but most all of their dishes are very good.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 17, 2019
Best Thai food ever. Honestlyyy. This food truck is parked right outside of Whistler's, and it does take awhile to get food. But that's only because perfection takes time (and Thai Kun is just wildly popular). The service is excellent and the food is 15/10 amazing.
I had the chance to try the black noodles, khao man gai, Thai Kun wontons, and grilled bread with peanut curry sauce. Ngl, it was addicting. I ate past the fullness because the peanut sauce with the grilled bread kept calling my name and the black noodles were very flavorful and sweet. The khao man gai was super satisfying and the wontons were super fresh[ly fried]. I can't pick a favorite; these were all excellent options. I'm just upset that Thai Kun doesn't exist in Houston.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Selina D.Austin, TX3962431Oct 16, 2019
Ordered some food while out getting drinks with some friends. Conveniently located outside by the patio decked out in a graffiti covered truck. Limited menu, but great choices all around. We decided to get the grilled chicken sandwich and the wontons. Both were served with a side of pickled cabbage, which helped cut the overall sweetness in both of the dishes.
The chicken sandwich was okay. There was a lot of bread compared to meat ratio, and the bread tasted like toasted wonder bread. The sauce was good, but really sweet and there was a lot of it. The cabbage was definitely a savior on this one. The wontons were perfectly gold brown and served with a spicy and tangy dipping sauce!
Service was iffy. Didn't seem super busy yet it took over 20 minutes for us to get our food! Honestly think they forgot about our order because people before and after us were getting theirs! When I went to check the workers were just hanging out talking in the truck while I could see my ticket hanging on prep line.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Heather T.Austin, TX313372Oct 22, 2018
The food is simple yet deserving of five-stars. My favorite choices are the cabbage two ways and the Thai-kun fried chicken with duck fat rice. This food truck is tucked behind Whisler's and a great option if you want to grab a craft cocktail and delicious meal.
The food is always on point and the staff has always been friendly. They have the ordering process down to a science -- order at the window, receive a buzzer and pick up when ready. Simple.
I've never been disappointed with their food.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
