Long story short: hard working techs, well done job, bad sales rep.
Just had a large, rather neglected pool deck, as well as 2 small entry porches done, and I am very pleased. I understand it's their busy season and its a weather dependent business, so am pleased with the outcome. The techs are hard working people. It took the lone power washer 6+ hours, and the 4 sander/stainers another 6+ hours a week later. There was one reschedule with the initial cleaning; the tech came out, saw an old stain on parts of the deck, claimed removing the old stain wasn't on the quote, and left. Booo. Did receive a message from the office that day saying the sales rep would need to give me a call to follow up. Never ever got a call from the sales rep. my first call to the office, they said i still needed to wait for the rep to call. A few days later i called again to find out what was the issue, and to ask for refund of the deposit since i was expecting a higher requote. On this call, they said the first tech didnt have the right equipment at the time, the original quote was correct, and they would be out in the next couple days to start the job. OK- moving on.
Before starting the project, i had emailed the sales rep for better pictures of the color choices. the response i got was to deal with the office for that.
And haven't heard a word fro the sales rep to follow up on the completion of the job.
Will post pictures.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Laura J.Chicago, IL04Aug 19, 2023
I wish I had read reviews before signing with Deck tech. Our sales rep was very responsive until we signed the contract and gave the deposit, and now radio silence. Our deck was washed and we were told the second day of service would occur 1-2 days later, but no longer than a week. Here we are, two weeks later, they have not contacted us to follow up on when they will be back. We have contacted them, have been told they will get back to us "as soon as possible" but nothing. I was also told they left a voicemail on my phone in an attempt to communicate, never did. I am beyond disappointed and wouldn't recommend anyone else make the same mistake we did.

Used these guys 15 years ago to do a complete fence. That part was good. I then reached out a few months ago to get a quote as some of the fence powere rotted. Ted Sparrow came to my home to give us a quote and left with us feeling very confident that the work would be completed quickly and professionally. We were told that they would be our 2-3 weeks after the quote was approved. After we sent over the signed quote they asked for a 50% deposit, which we did. A month later we were trying to see where we were in the pecking order for getting the work done. It took several calls and emails to get a answer. We were told week over week that they would be out to do the work, but never showed up. Almost two months later they came out to do the work while we were not home. Returning home, we reviewed the work and it was the most disappointing work I've ever seen. After reporting back to Deck Tech, we were promised they would be out in a week. Again, that never happened. After three months and not completing the work, they "stole" the other half of the deposit. I wrote to the BBB about the issues . I tried Nicole in customer service and Ted Sparrow who managed the job and never got a reply. I then called the main office to get someone to do something. I'm talking with George , who came out quickly to review the issues again. A few weeks late they came out to repair some of the disappointing areas. We are still waiting on the caps that we were promised. I never would have thought that such a small project would take so long and turn out so bad.
Never would I use this company again.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - George K.Chicago, IL01Jun 10, 2022
DO NOT HIRE DECK TECH!
I wish I had read through the rest of these Yelp reviews before hiring them. They are grossly incompetent and unprofessional. Their carpenter cut through the main electric feed to our house. It took them over a week to get someone out to repair it (and the electricians they sent were just as bad as them).
Also, one of the stringers (stair supports) was rotted out and should have been replaced, instead they implemented a slip-shod fix, which has already come loose and created a safety hazard. They refuse to repair it properly, and instead want to charge us nearly $1000 more to do what should have been done as part of the original work.
They are incompetent and do not stand by their work. DO NOT HIRE DECK TECH!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Roger B.Elk Grove Village, IL04Nov 10, 2022
BEWARE! On 9/9/22 we signed a Proposal (essentially a CONTRACT) with Deck Tech to have our wood deck cleaned and restained for a total price of $1,681.90. We paid $504.57. down, leaving what should have been a final balance of $1177.33. We made a mistake (a big mistake) by allowing Deck Tech to have access to our credit card. When Deck Tech finally finished the entire job they "slammed" a charge of $1,303.47 against our credit card. My wife quickly called Deck Tech on October 4, 2022 and spoke to customer representative named "McKenzie". "McKenzie" assured my wife they would issue a credit of $126.14 to our credit card. Well this never happened. We made numerous phone calls to Deck Tech regarding this seeming scam - (Lucy, Brittany, McKenzie and Crystal Alvarado (the supposed customer service manager). Each time, each person told us a credit would be issued and never once did anyone at Deck Tech offer any explanation to justify this additional charge. To date, 11/10/22 no credit applied. I don't know what other people call this but I call this "a ripoff". No one from Deck Tech ever returns our phone calls. BEWARE!

Single Worst Home Improvement Experience Ever!
At first Deck Tech stained our deck and it looked perfect - we were very happy and we had all the furniture back in place, flowers planted, etc. Then 6 days later I came home to my deck furniture in the driveway, a crew showed up while we were not home and completely stripped our freshly stained deck again, ruining plants, furniture and staining our Viking grill along the way. No apologies from them. Initially they did not even believe me, Ulyses in production questioned my story until I told him I had it on video. He and Bob Rana, our salesman, stopped answering calls. After multiple phones calls and complaints they came to re-strip deck further due to the fact that stain was so fresh, it was not completely removed. Finally, 2 to 3 weeks later, they re-stained the deck again but it does not look as good as the first time. Now there are dirt tracks along the traffic pattern because the stain did not soak into the wood all the way and a few light spots. Have been trying for 5 months to get some sort of restitution. They offered $150 at first.... then $350, but after dozens of phone calls and emails to Crystal, still no credit to our card. I have the whole thing recorded on security video with photos. Deck Tech is terrible!!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Julie N.Niles, IL03Sep 16, 2021
Years ago we used Deck Tech and were pleased so we reached out again. Initially I advised that the property had changed & some repairs needed so we needed someone to come out. This information was ignored and we received a quote based on information from over 5 years ago.--all thru email. I again called back advising our needs, and within a week a tech was sent out to measure and requote. He saw the repairs needed and advised a carpenter would come out. We received another quote for the work which did not include any repairs and the work could not be done w/o the repairs. I notified the company again as we were waiting for a carpenter to do repairs--based on anothers review, work was done without repairs on a rotted deck. By the way, we were advised work could be scheduled in a couple of weeks, but we can't get a response in less then a couple of weeks.
I can't comment on the "work", but can comment on their ability not to listen, not to respond and not to get back to you timely. If you want the work done w/in a 2 month period, don't count on Deck Tech. It has taken 6 weeks to get to this stage--an invalid quote as it does not cover all the work and no respons when inquiring about timing.
Professionalism typically will result in a simple response of we are trying to get you on a schedule, we see your needs and will get back to you...but ghosting, that is not professional. It's interesting, reviews show either they are great???--or they are bad. no in betweens.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brian C.Chicago, IL09641May 25, 2021
This company is the absolute worst with scheduling. They lie about when they are going to show up Their estimate on timing is a joke and lack communication and professionalism. This company is a communication nightmare. They have strung us along on timing and lied to us and claim "weather dependent" we have has such good weather over the last month and a half and our deck is still not stained and it was supposed to have taken three weeks from placing a deposit. It appears they only care about making maximum profit by lying to us about when they will come out on timing then stringing you along for a ride. Avoid at all cost, I am so pissed off that we chose this company. No idea about the quality of the product but their lack of care about anyone but themselves. A foreman sent here told me "we don't do schedules and never have"
They also refuse to let customers talk to anyone who does the scheduling. The customer service person acts as a firewall for the company and they won't do anything if there is a forecast of the slightest bit of rain anywhere in the greater metro area regardless of if it actually rained or rained in your area. My partner is extremely frustrated dealing with this company. Please don't work with this company.
Also, take note "George and Bill" here on Yelp, the owners seem to be the same person on here responding as they have the same photo. This place doesn't care about anyone or anything they do. It's totally an irresponsible business. All this frustration is due to how George and Bill run their business and they have trained the people we have dealt with. So any of this cute follow-up on Yelp is just a PR stunt. And we have called your office many times and they are the problem! It's your office that is so unbelievably frustrating.
Update: They are basically never coming out to do any work. This place is a nightmare.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Business owner information

After two years, I had to refinish the deck. They're "proprietary" protective coating began peeling off in a year. In fact, they left me the unused portion, which is a commercial product without their name to be found, Furthermore, it's labeled as a product to be used on fences and siding--no mention of decks! What a joke! Thompsons Water Seal will suffice, as a deck has to be refinished at least every two years.
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Sep 4, 2020Previous reviewI made The mistake of not checking Yelp reviews before I contracted with Deck Tech! I went by Best Pick Reports - huge mistake. The salesman appeared knowledgeable, and I was impressed with his pitch. The fellow who came out to wash was very nice, but could barely speak English and wore no mask. I never expected "like new" results, but I did my best to point out areas that he clearly missed after the wash, but often he didn't understand. He conveyed that I was to call the office to arrange for the finishing phase.
Then a frustrating calling sequence began. The receptionist was quite friendly, but it's clear that office management left a lot to be desired. I indicated that I preferred to be here when the finishing crew came. She said that the "technicians" don't call, they just come whenever the weather is good. I insisted, because there were areas of concern. So, they did in fact call an hour ahead - a reasonable number of days afterwards.
Both the salesman and the ensuing contract painted an elaborate picture regarding the finishing technique. The "technicians" would examine the deck, make sure all the boards were tight, and pound in any exposed nail heads. I never heard the sound of a hammer. Then they would sand to even it out, and prepare for the final finishing coat. I tried to indicate all the spots that were missed in the wash. The sander got a few, but overall it was a very quick and superficial sanding of the deck. Their "proprietary" finishing coat remained slick and oily for several days afterward instead of the indicated 24 hours. Since then I've pounded at least two dozen exposed nail heads myself. They sent a bill for the balance slightly over a week later. I called with my card number and expressed surprise that there was no follow up. I had never heard from anyone, asking if I was satisfied,. She said, "Oh no you have to arrange a walk-through if you want that!" I was happy enough to be rid of them.
In short: a poorly managed company, mediocre results, and (as I later learned) overpriced! - Mark V.Bolingbrook, IL015Jun 22, 2022
if I could give it a zero. I would. We set up an appointment for the estimator to come out and my wife had it planned to be home at that time, because we had specific things we wanted to show him. I get home for lunch and the folder with all the information was left by the door way before he was scheduled to be there. In the folder, was brochures, a tax form and a cover letter that stated everything that was in the folder, including the estimate. One problem...no estimate in the folder. The most important thing and it was left out. I called immediately to find out what the price was, left a voice-message and never got a call back. Great customer service Deck Tech! its amazing you are still in business.
