The de Young is housed in a copper-clad landmark building designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. It showcases the institution's significant collections of American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 17th to the 21st centuries; art from Oceania, Africa, and the Americas; a diverse collection of costumes and textiles; and international contemporary art.

I've seen the De Young from the outside a number of times and was not overly impressed. Let's just say it's not my favorite looking building in the city. But, generally, the architecture is not what defines an art museum so inside we go. It's not the most intuitively laid out museum either but once you get the hang of its quirks it's fairly easy to navigate the galleries. The DeYoung doesn't specialize so there's modern art, older European art as well as a great selection or American art that seems to be anchored by a wonderful gallery full of Hudson River School paintings. There's also photography which is why I ended up there in the first place. There's a massive downstairs gallery that's currently showing a 100+ image show of the master of Fashion and people photography, Irving Penn (it's brilliant) and just finished up a massive show from Another American master Ansel Adams. We also met the most wonderful guard/docent named Harold who gave us the inside track on everything and really helped us enjoy the museum beyond what we could have done on our own ( Thanks Harold)! Anyhow this place is the bomb and with your admission you can also visit the Legion of Honor museum ( though it's not exactly nearby:-). Tons of other awesome stuff to do in Golden Gate Park though, you just can't go wrong there :-)

This is my favorite museum in SF. The layout and architecture is so interesting. It's right in the middle of the Golden Gate Park and is the perfect place to visit on a beautiful weekend.

Come to the Irving Penn exhibit! It's worth the trip to the de Young to see this. Lots of photographs you'll probably recognize and many that will be new, but all very interesting!

My friend and I were offered such a gift and, after accepting, were led to another gallery, shown a chair on which we sat, and had the most beautiful experience of being sung to by a beautiful young lady. It was so moving and her singing was exquisite! What an amazing, unexpected experience!
Mar 16, 2024Previous reviewBack for a second look at all the beautiful dresses and fashion wear. Does not disappoint!
Feb 12, 2023Previous reviewWent back again for the Ramses exhibit with another friend, but, this time, I looked more closely at the Hung Liu exhibit, which is in the open area on the main floor. He has some very beautiful and interesting painting on exhibit that are worth some time. Easily passed up if you're not looking up at the high walls or if you're in a rush to see other things in the museum, but you should make it a point to look at these!
Nov 17, 2022Previous reviewWent to the deYoung Museum specifically for the Ramses the Great exhibit, which was really good except for the crowds. The museum itself is a beautiful building with an area upstairs where you can see a panoramic view of San Francisco for miles. I didn't go up there this time and I haven't been since before you-know-what, but I remember it being a very impressive addition to the museum; definitely a place to take visitors to SF.
On to the exhibit! Being a member, I got my ticket reservation online. When I arrived at the museum, it was hard to know where/if I should check in. I went to the ticket counter and the person scanned my ticket and gave me a sticker to wear. Then I went to the exhibit entrance, which was downstairs. I had put my scantron away already since I had my sticker but found that I needed it again for the person downstairs. I didn't understand the need for a sticker if I was going to have to show my ticket again, but, oh, well!
The exhibit was cool; lots to see and much to read, but the crowds made it difficult to get close. The first room you enter features a video; there are two benches in that room, enough for maybe 3 people each. The room had about 30 people in it, so most of us had to stand. I would think with so many seniors going to the museum, they would provide more benches! The film ran about 10 minutes, then you are prompted to enter another room. Before I was finished with the second room, the next group of guests had entered the room (a group of middle school students), so it got *really* crowded and a bit noisy. As is normal for middle schoolers, there was a bit of rough housing behind the teacher's back, so that made it seem even more crowded. I love kids, but maybe school groups should have their own special times to attend exhibits!
The deYoung is definitely an asset to the City and I will forever support their efforts with my paid membership (unless they become financially impossible to support as the California Academy of Sciences became). - Apr 4, 20244 check-ins
Recently visited the de Young Museum after not being inside for a long while. Had a great time thanks to Annie W. who took me in as her +1. Besides the exhibit, we also got serenaded to. At first, I was a bit confused by this but later realized this is part of a performance piece. Lovely!

I had a wonderful time at the de Young museum in San Francisco. The last time I went to the museum was in 2017 during my time as a student at San Francisco State. As a fellow patron of the arts and as an artist, I love to go in and look at the beautiful pieces of work and their rich history. I usually go towards impressionism and portraiture, but my favorite piece of work is the candy machine painting by Wayne Thiebaud. I can't wait to visit again and see what new exhibitions will be displayed.

Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style
This was my first time at the de Young Museum. It was a rainy weekend. While the weather was cold and terrible outside this did not stop many from visiting the museum. It was a perfect time to enjoy a museum indoors.
It so happened that a fashion exhibition was featured at the museum that day. Admission fee was an additional $12 for the exhibit. I don't know a lot about the fashion world but I found the event to be fascinating. The dresses from the work of over 50 fashion designers were beautiful. I enjoyed learning about the fashion history from over the decades.
My daughter and I had fun at the digital "try-on" experience in the museum. We 'tried on' three different extravagant evening ensembles from the AR mirrors and I tried on the dresses while I was fully clothed. LoL! The outfits were stunning! They are the elegant works of French designer Yves Saint Laurent, Chinese-American Bay Area-based designer Kaisik Wong, and Italian designer Valentino
Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to see the permanent exhibits since the fashion exhibit took up all the time we had before the museum closed for the day but I'm looking forward to returning again soon.
It made driving to San Francisco in the rain all worth it.

I recently visited the de Young museum for the very first time -- can't believe it took me so long. My friend and I took advantage of how it is free for Bay Area residents on Saturdays. It happened to be the perfect outing for a rainy day. The museum is accessible via public transportation (Muni bus).
We visited during the de Young Open 2023 exhibit, which was a wonderful collection of work from Bay Area artists. There's something for everyone in this museum. We didn't make it through all the rooms, but love that there's paintings, sculptures, cool architecture, and activities to engage visitors (i.e. supplies to sketch the art). Make sure to check out the patio and the observation deck! I forgot to visit the observation deck last time, which means I've got to come back soon to take in more of the de Young's views.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ivory B.San Francisco Bay Area, CA7142062613Feb 21, 2024
I just can't believe that I have not yet written a Yelp review on De Young Museum.
I love this museum. I had been a member in the past and now a regular frequent guest.
The de Young Museum is a fine arts museum, along with the Legion of Honor. It is located in San Francisco, California on the Tea Garden Drive in the middle of the urban park, the beautiful Golden Gate Park. The de Young is named for early San Francisco newspaperman M. H. de Young.
Queen Elizabeth II speaking at the de Young Museum in 1983. About a million people have visited the museum yearly.
Due to the 1989 huge earthquake, the museum was demolished and rebuilt, which opened in 2005. The only remaining original elements of the old de Young are the vases and sphinxes located near the Pool of Enchantment and the palm trees in the front.
The museum offers a two-floor museum store, free access to the lobby, tower, and a full-service cafe with outdoor seating in the Osher Sculpture Garden.
The de Young has a great permanent collection galleries of fine American arts from the 17th through the 21st centuries, international contemporary art, textiles, and costumes, and art from the Americas, Oceania, and Africa.
The de Young Museum host an open-call exhibition for "all Bay Area artists," and other contemporary acquisitions to reflect contemporary art practice.
Beautiful spaces. Spectacular arts. Amazing views.
I highly recommend it.Helpful 16Thanks 4Love this 12Oh no 0 - 3354454Feb 3, 2024
My friend & I visited de Young museum to see the Fashioning San Francisco: A Century of Style Exhibit. This event is going on until August 11, 2024. We explored the history of San Francisco through fashion designers like Christian Dior, Chanel, YSL, Valentino, Alexander McQueen etc. This is a real high fashion & haute couture from these renowned designers. We experienced the Virtual Augmented Reality (AR) located in Piazzoni Murals Room and as if we are wearing the designer gowns. It was a lot of fun! I highly recommend this exhibit to everyone.
