Did you like Flat Rock Family Cafe? Were you as sad as me when it closed? Well, good news. The family that ran that restaurant has opened a new one in Monroe, and it's great! Steve, the family's master-chef patriarch, makes a really awesome gyro, and his fish & chips are great too. Also, be sure to try the lemon rice soup! I haven't had any of his coney dogs yet, but they're supposed to be good as well, and they have a day of the week (I can't remember which right now), where the coneys are only like, $1 each. That's a good deal in these days of penny-pinching. Most of the menu is American stuff, ala burgers, coneys, reubens, patty melts, etc. There is an awesome little Greek section as well, and take it from me, it's the best Gyro you'll find anywhere nearby, and their Greek salads are great.

My family and I were really sad to see Fat Rock Family Cafe close, as Steve, Sue, Peter, and the rest of the family are friends of ours, and it was nice to have a relaxing place to go to get yummy, reasonably-priced food, and be treated like friends. It's nice to see their restaurant rise from the ashes in this new form, and I'm looking forward to eating too much, many many times there. You should as well!

My sister had been here and raved about them having great burgers and the best french fries in town. She finally convinced me to go with her for lunch. Wow, were we dissappointed. The hand-cut, crispy steak fries she had experienced and raved about were now a mixture of steak fries and thin-cut fries... both previously frozen and all nearly raw. The larger pieces were actually still cold inside. And, do they actually count them for a skimpy order? The burger was also sub-par... clearly not a hand formed patty, served on a cold, untoasted bun. Blah. On top of the food fail, the building has no foyer and every time someone opened the door, the entire tiny dining area was subjected to a 25 degree drop in temperature as the cold winter wind blew through. The waiter was smug and had an attitude like he was too good to be there. The parking is sketchy.

I suppose you could call us a semi-regular, visiting about once a month. Food is always fresh. Nice quaint atmosphere, very friendly people that own and run the place.

Update 8/9/2015: Business is closed and building has a for lease sign on it.

I liked the bean soup, but I can never eat there in the winter months because it was like we were seated outside. At 85 years old, I just can not take being that cold, and the front door allowed the cold to come right in. The family that runs the place are very nice.

Great little family run business. Get the Dearborn ham and cheese omelet for breakfast. Coffee is very good as well, and they give you a whole pot At the table. Awesome service! And they support veterans. It's worth the short trip off the beaten paths of Monroe.

Gyro and bread pudding is on point! Small place, hole-in-the-wall feel. Great folks running it. They also do a lot for the community. Support local!

I give two stars because I felt bad giving only one. The one and only experience I had here was around June or July of last year. I ordered a simple omelet with hash browns and toast. My omelet was BURNED all on the outside but cooked fine on the inside. The hash browns were prepared the same way. I am not sure what was going on in the back of the kitchen/restaurant for anyone to cook like that let alone hand it over to the customer as a carry out..... seriously...... my 10 year old son could have cooked a better omelet..... I get home and open up my carry out bags and open my container to find the overly cooked masterpiece ..... I was starving.... I ate it..... I did...... like I said the inside of it was fine... I peeled off the over cooked parts and threw that away.... I knew the place had not been open long and just racked it up as "inexperienced" cooks and / or owners that are new to the restaurant business. :-/ I told myself I would give them another shot at some point down the road to see if anything has changed. It's been at least a year now and I think I will try them out again soon. I know mistakes happen. Everyone has bad days. Nobody is perfect and neither am I . I will say the person that got my carry out ready to go was absolutely WONDERFUL. She was so sweet and she's the reason I couldn't give "one star". Hopefully my next experience with the carry out there, the food will be just as good as the SERVICE! :-)
