Highly overrated in my opinion.  When we moved to the area everyone told us we had to go to Comos.  Here is what I found:

The pizza is not bad, but nothing special.  In fact, I heard their pizza was their true calling, so I was somewhat disappointed when I took a bite and my first reaction was "eh".

The patio is always packed during the summer, and it can get rowdy on the weekends.  After my experiences with their food, service and drinks, the only conclusion I can draw from this is that it must be the "cool" place to go... but why?

Their service leaves a lot to be desired.  You will wait on everything, even when they don't seem to be that busy.  And I have even had some rude waitstaff too.  Seriously, what ever happened to customer service?

The salads are truly disappointing.  The ingredients looked pathetic.  And I expected a lot more for the price-- enough that it could be shared.  Wilting lettuce.  Yuck.

Overall just a disappointing experience.

Not impressed at all. Apathetic servers. Waited for minutes to get silverware. Pizza was too doughy and saucy... and for $17? The salad was the most pathetic bowl of brown lettuce I had ever seen. Rotted iceberg with a tomato slice on the top. The waiter should have blushed for even having the balls to bring it out to the table. I looked at it and sent it back.

The other part was that I couldn't figure this restaurant out. It looked Mexican or Polynesian on the outside patio, but ended up being a greasy Italian hole in the wall. Not to mention some of their bar rooms look like they're 80's dance club themed....? Weird combination guys.

Out of all the options you have, really, do not choose Como's. Royal Oak, Detroit and the rest of Ferndale await for business and I think they'll appreciate it more than this place did mine.

Oh and I do have to say for other reviewers, don't let the gay friendly tag sway you into a crappy experience. Most places in Ferndale, Royal Oak, Detroit, and other spots around the area are and have been for a long time.

Imagine a frat house owning a restaurant.... and that about sums up Como's. The bathrooms are gross, the beer selection is crappy, and the service... wait, what service? All they need is beer pong and warm Natty Light to make the scene perfect.

My class threw a huge Halloween party here in 2008. I was a little scared about having it outside in the fall, but they had heat lamps out -- and it was nice. Except... there were about 300+ people on the patio -- and 2 outdoor bars with 4 total bartenders. Odds were not in your favor to get a drink. The second make shift bar had flat pop and bottom shelf liquor -- all cash only, all while being charged top shelf liquor prices. I went there once previously, and basically the same story -- impossible to get a drink, and if you DO get served nasty service.

Pizza is OK. Pizza is not good enough to make up for the service. You'll wait about 60 minutes to get a pizza when the tables aren't all full. The only time I don't mind waiting more than 30 minutes for a pizza is when I'm having deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati's in Chicago. No drink refills. No water. No checking in on the table. You have to beg to get the check. You have to beg them to ring up the bill.

Not worth ever going back -- even for their patio.

Como's has one thing going for it - my parents went there for their first date.  So, really, if it wasn't for what happened at Como's, I might not be here.  Although, whether that's a good thing, I guess, depends on your perspective. :)

However, each time that I have been there in the past 10 years or so, I haven't been completely impressed.  Their food is good, but I don't think its remarkably better than anywhere else (even their famous pizza).  And, their prices are a bit steep.  So, high prices for mediocre food - not a good combination.

I think that Como's has been such an institution in downtown Ferndale for so long (30+ years) that at this point they're pretty much just coasting on their name.  Its kind of like how Kid Rock put out one good CD, and now, ever since he got famous, people continue to buy the crap records he puts out every couple years because its Kid Rock.

It was a good idea: "Honey, let's go  to Ferndale for dinner! It's our anniversary. Lets find a place with outside seating and have a good time!" It was a great idea. Hmm, let's review how the night went  .  .  .

The company: great
The space: great
The service: yuck (Being that cranky must be tough)
The food: great (shrimp scampi) and double yuck (ribs and sides)
The bathrooms: cheesy yuck

Food details
The shrimp scampi (with a side of angel hair pasta) was worth the almost $20.00 bucks we paid. The shrimp were large and plentiful. The sauce heavy with garlic, butter, white wine, and just the right amount of lemon. Once tossed over the al dente noodles, it became a little touch of coastal Italy at it's best. And sadly, it was the best of our meal.

The ribs were dry, over cooked, tough, and much worse then the crappy mac and cheese. That was quite a feat since the mac and cheese was much worse then the baked beans.

The water was nice and cold however. See, a silver lining in every cloud (said while wincing, hoping you don't ask about the bathrooms).

I say pass unless opting for the pizza or drinks only on the patio.

I used to frequent this place quite a bit because it was really close to my friend's old house. I don't know if we realized that there was a Pizza Hut down the street.

I guess she liked it enough to keep coming back. I was not too impressed. Their pizza is nothing to write home about. And while they do have 'free bread', it's rather unappealing. It's just normal sliced white bread that comes in sandwich baggies, you know not the fancy ziploc color seal ones. The ones you fold and such.

Pretty lame if you ask me.

I would give this place only one star, but last year I went to a party there, which was on the top floor. It was a pretty nice area for a party, and it was fun. I think it was catered from the restaurant, and the food that they had there was pretty good.

However, as a paying customer at the restaurant, I have never had anything special there.

It is pretty close to the Magic Bag though, so if you want to eat a pizza then go catch a show, then I guess this is a way you could go.

We had a "large" party on Thursday night (about 17). The host had called ahead and from my understanding they said it would be *no problem*, they would seat us on the patio, and we could also get two separate bills for the table to help us split things up. That didn't happen.

That waiter was also a bit of a jerk at some points. I still tipped OK because my friend made me....but he was making occasional semi-rude comments to myself - or just flat out ignoring things people asked of him- and I saw him being snide with others too. He was very **visibly** irritated to have had to deal with all of us, like he was doing us a huge favor. It was rude. Big party or not, deal with it man.

I was a wait-person myself at several restaurants in the past and that kind of service is just uncalled for. No one at the table had done anything to provoke that (as if that's even acceptable anyway, what happened to customers being right? LOL not these days and NOT at Como's).

On top of that, while the food is decent at Como's, it's over-priced. I have been there several times after a Mega 80's night at Magic Bag and wouldn't remember the service because I of course had been drinking each time. Last night I was pretty dead sober though. I just remember the food being fine but not cheap eats. I am not sure if all the patio servers act this way but someone really needs to talk to management because it appears many others have had JUNK service on the patio as well. Booooo!

And to our waiter last night, you sucked. No one came in there specifically to give you a hard time and make you actually GET things like food and drinks for us. Our bad. If it had been up to me, our tip would NOT have been as much as it was but you were smart in directing what seemed to be your only ration of nice-ness to the one person hosting and collecting the money. You managed to squeeze out a couple smiles and pretend like you were having fun waiting on us, with her at least.

I'm only giving them a 2 because their pizza (especially the deep dish) is not completely horrible.  Avoid all other food from this establishment.

Or just go for overpriced drinks if hanging out on an insanely crowded patio with poor service sounds good to you.

Yeah... if you're down with horrible service and super overpriced drinks, Como's is the place for you. It's a shame that such a great patio is wasted on this place and that so many people think it's so fabulous.

Oh, and watch your card statements. My friend got charged twice and Como's refused to rectify the situation until my friend threatened to call her lawyer (i.e. her friend who was in law school.)

If I could give negative stars, I would.

I can't even rate the food only the horrible, horrible service. Our party just came back from Como's; we had spent all day at the Arab Festival in Dearborn and my mom's husband wanted to go somewhere and get an espresso or cappuccino where he could sit outside and people watch. Well, I don't drink coffee so I'm not sure of where to go so I said "How about Como's? We can check and see what they have and if we don't see anything, we'll go somewhere else".

So the three of us get seated and get our menus; sure enough they have espresso AND cappuccino listed..great.. I'm thinking him and my mom can get that and I'll have a lemonade. Our server came over and my mom's husband no sooner got the words out of his mouth then he got a "We don't have that"...with attitude on the side. Umm...let's see...it's on your menu. "We haven't had that in YEARS" he responds with a barely veiled haha eff you attitude. Well then why the F is it still on your freaking menu? So, mom's hubby asks for espresso...they don't have THAT either. He calls over this lady who was wrapping silverware to confirm..um, guess what..I don't doubt it I'm just questioning WHY IS IT ON YOUR MENU?

I want to make a good impression on my mom and her husband and I get this crap service (granted, we only ordered drinks) but still....oh yeah, when he deposited the plain cup of regular coffee in front of my mom's husband who happened to be deep in conversation with my mom and did not say thanks our server stalked off muttering "Well thank YOU" all snotty.  Holy shit...take your pretentious douchey attitude and shove it..I will never come here again for anytthing and I'll tell everyone I know to avoid it like the plague.

Como's has a few things going for it, but mostly, it's not so great.  They have an outstanding patio (that can get really full on weekends and REALLY full on the first Wednesday of the month).  Drinks are really hard to come by on busy nights. Pricey too.

Pizza is great.  The rest of the food? Yeah... not so much.

Went to Como's a few years ago & i've never been back. I stopped in with my parents to have a nice family lunch, and we left disappointed. Having never tried one before, I ordered a meatball sub. The sub came out wrapped in tin foil and was the messiest malarchy I've ever seen on a restaurant plate, it was difficult enough to hold it, let alone eat. I couldn't even eat the entire sub, it tasted exactly what dog food smells like. Suffice it to say, I choked down half of the sub (to be nice, because I wasn't the one paying) but I gave up. I can't remember what my parents had, but I do remember they were equally disappointed. You only get one first impression, and as I said before: I haven't been back since, that says it all.

I give Como's an immediate 4-star for being gay friendly and having Italian food. I'm a fat queer, it's just how it's got to be. There are rules.

Details, you say?

Como's pizza and pasta dishes have never disappointed me on their own, in fact I've really enjoyed everything I've ordered--until it comes to the bill. Especially when you're sitting in a plastic chair, eating on a plastic table, and sipping wine out of a plastic cup, it's really irritating to pay Como's prices.

I took my sister, fresh to metro Detroit, to Como's last summer and got hit with a $5 charge on our bill. I asked the waitstaff who sassily said it was a charge to cover the increasing cost of cheese, which was listed on the menu. The notice was completely unreadable, of course. Sister was not impressed, coming from a small-town where paying more than $20 for a pie and pop is uber frou frou. Oh, her frown! It bore into me!

I'm saving all my Como's bucks for summertime, when the spacious patio is open, which is really fun, and has been the spot of me re-finding my "I love Detroit (er...Ferndale)" energy when I'm down.

Women's night first Wednesday also a draw for the girl-loving-girls in your life. Get there early, I've never seen so many ladies in one spot!

The only good things about this palce is the patio and that you can get food until 4am. However, the patio sometimes is packed and if you're going out there to eat you my not get the best service. It's hard to walk around all of the plastic chairs and people. The food is plain and boring and WAY over priced. If this place was in any other spot besides it's prime location on Woodward it would be out of business.

Go to Marinelli's instead, cheap drinks and awesome square pizza.

We sat on the patio, and it would have been nice but the food was not so great and the server was nice but horrible.  We had to send back our diet coke because he brought regular, we had to grab our own silver ware from the hostess stand.  The subs were not so great.  One person got the pizza, and it was excellent, but we ended up paying almost $40 for our two person share of the bill and I would have had a better meal at Subway.  Too bad, because it could have been really nice.

I really want to like como's.  They have a great patio.  A super skinny, crazy woman who chain smokes and walks around creeping people out as their owner/gate keeper, and they are so very gay.  However, we went there on Monday and their deep dish pizza was hardly deep dish (even though it was pretty good - it was definitely misleading and not necessarily worth the $20 price tag) and our waitress kind of spaced on our drinks.  Granted, we were a big party - a work softball team who just had our first win after a series of painful losses - but still, beer is important.  and if you can't get that right como's - we gots some problems.

The service here is atrocious.

The "new" Como's sounded good on paper. I heard it was gay friendly, they had drink specials, every first wednesday of the month they have a party and i like a place with a patio.I was in love with the toasted ravioli when i tried it, and they have some great spaghetti. But 80% the time the service made the visit unenjoyable. It took forever to get water, and then forever to get drinks. Once, the appetizer came long after the pizza came and we have had more than a couple of people act like they just dont' want to be there. My friend and I are both servers, so we always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but we have consistenly gotten poor service on busy and slow days.

So why go back? Well the people are pretty cool are the bar, even if the drinks aren't. The food is good, though I've had better pizza. And there are a FEW servers in there that take what they do seriously and actually take care of their tables. I'd go, get the pizza or pasta, SKIP the drinks.

i usually enjoy the place, but i recently had a pizza from there and the food and service were atrocious!

i will give it another shot, because i have been going there for several years, but in a town of great pizza places, it will have a short leash.

The best thing this pizzeria has going for it is the location. I barely give this three stars. I was torn between two and three.

The pizza is delicious and the ranch dressing on the salads is honestly the best I've ever had. You can't beat the location. Those that live in the area can walk, it's just a quick freeway drive from Hamtramck/Detroit, and it's a good choice if you are already parked to visit one of the nearby bars.

On the down side, I find the service to be extremely inconsistent, ranging from overly aggressive to terrible. Last night I got a pizza to go, and the woman (I think she's an owner) acted totally put out that she had to take care of us. All the other employees were great, though. It's also kind of on the expensive side.

Overall, for the price and the possibility of not finding a parking spot or having to deal with so-so service, it's only worth it half the time. I pretty much only choose Como's if everyone wants pizza, and we're in the neighborhood. Sometimes a better option is Pasquale's down Woodward. Faster seating/service, and slightly cheaper.

Back when I used to live in Michigan, Como's was a must after I left the club or bar or someone's house at 2 a.m.  I mean, they have this great patio, are open after the bars close, and the pizza is incredible (at least when I've been drunk).  The wait for food does take forever at that time since it seems like everyone and their brother stops in after the clubs and bars close down, but when you finally get that pizza, it makes the wait seem worth it.

I have been here during normal hours, completely sober and the vibe just doesn't seem to be the same.  But the food is still decent.  I look forward to coming here after a night at the bar the next time I come to Michigan.

I love this place, despite all it's flaws.  The pizza gets it four stars, along with the patio atmosphere and the very customer friendly hours (open til 3am... who doesn't want pizza at 3am?).

The service is kind of notoriously slow, and the drinks are a little bit watery, but if you come for the pizza and to sit outside under the heaters of the patio even in October, you won't be disappointed.

The pizza is ok, I have to say. Nothing you'd drive far for but ok. The rest of the entrees are over priced and unremarkable. I wonder how a place with plastic cups and an ignorable Sunday brunch can charge such prices. Go elsewhere, don't waste your time or money here.

This gay-friendly restaurant is a must for pizza and pasta lovers alike. Located in Ferndale on the corner of 9 mile and Woodward this local hotspot is a great place for a family dinner or a few martinis with the friends on Saturday evening.

Como's is probably best known for their Italian fare, more specifically their pizza and pasta dishes. Como's offers diners tasty pizza with even tastier toppings like artichokes, feta cheese, sausage and more.  The pasta dishes are all well cooked and the sauces well seasoned. Personally, I would recommend the pizza over the pasta though.  In addition, their menu has a spattering of salads and sandwiches.
In the warmer Michigan months lounge on the patio and enjoy your dinner under the dazzling moon. If I'm not mistaken the patio is heated, which makes for a great time on cooler nights.

Como's offers a full bar, a great selection of beers, bottled or on tap, and some tasty martinis. The service is always great at Como's. The servers are personable, attentive and never overbearing.  They always make me feel welcomed and ensure my satisfaction so I'll return.

So, whether you're looking to gorge on some serious carbs or a spot to kick back at the bar Como's offers well prepared food and yummy drinks to satisfy your body, soul, and mind.

Como's is a great place to go with a small group to friends to grab a bite, drink and dance! I have been there on many occasions and it is always a good time.

I've had most of the appetizers and they are all good, the pizza is great and the drinks are strong.

Como's is very eclectic, I have friends that bring their kids, friends that go there to drink and friends that swear it is a gay bar....  Any which way its fun!

If you are looking for some late night fun and to skip the food, head to the patio. I have been there for salsa dancing and plain old dancing events.

Here is the breakdown:

* Wait staff: Efficient
* Drink Menu: Full Bar
* Menu: Italian, Pizza, American
* Parking:  Its Ferndale... if your lucky you can get street, if not there are lots all over
* Dress: Casual

After having the Sunday brunch at Como's, if I never return there, it'll be too soon.  The brunch was the most pathetic excuse for brunch I've ever seen.  While there was a pretty big spread, the food looked, tasted, and smelled just like my college dorm breakfasts.  Honestly.

Other yelpers seem to like the actual Italian dishes and pizzas, so I guess Como's should just stick to Italian cooking.  But I'm just not willing to pay $18 for pasta that's made by people who can't even cook eggs.

I should probably give this place 4 stars, but I don't want to.  I like this place, but I just don't get it.  I don't get why people rave and rave about Como's.  I think it's overrated.  Sure they have really good pizza.  Sure they have a nice outdoor porch to eat and drink at.  Sure the staff is generally friendly.  But my gosh, the way people talk about this place, I was anticipating the best experience of my life when I went for the first time.  Did I get that?  No.  What I did get was a pretty good experience with some pretty good food.  Good enough to go back?  Yes.  But so good that I HAVE to go back?  No.

My point is simply that Como's is a good place, perhaps even a great place, but if you've heard all the hype, block it out before you go there.  I have been there several times, and it's always been enjoyable.  I like how it's right in downtown Ferndale, how it's relatively cheap for the overall experience, and how the pizza is quite delicious.  I recommend you go there; it will probably be quite enjoyable, but just don't expect to be blown away.

I had a pizza lunch here that was just amazing.

Granted, I'm pretty easy to please when pizza is concerned, but really I like Como's pizza a lot better than anywhere in Ferndale.

I was surprised at the size of the thing. It's huge! Add that to a good sauce and lots of it, heaping toppings... and a bucket of brews, and you have a mighty fine lunch!

Maybe I'm sheltered, but I've never sat at the bar in a place and ordered food. Not only that, but at a patio bar! For some reason or another this really made the experience worthwhile.

Also, Tiny, the bartender, was super sweet and didn't hold back in pouring us some killer mixed drinks. If you get stuck with any bartender at Como's, she'd be the one to chose!

Overall the patio experience was great. I'd suggest Como's to anyone looking for a fairly inexpensive lunch in Ferndale 9 mi. area.

Open late!

I had their Toasted Ravioli and pizza, enjoyed both!

Pasta is okay.

I just didn't realize the dining area didn't have any non-smoking tables, unless I didn't see it.

My boyfriend works late, so it's hard looking for late night spots, not the healthiest, but having the option is a plus.

I'd give Como's four stars, but they seem to suffer from the same hubris as The Bosco down the street. They jumped from corner family Italian to "you'll need a reservation" and not-family-friendly a little too fast.

The pizza *is* great, as are almost all of the pasta dishes I've had. In fact, the food is good enough that I've only placed them "on hold," instead of blacklisting them.

What got them in trouble with me was a large family gathering we were to have there. We made reservations that were not honored when we got there.

How do you say "not cool" in Italian? I'm sure there's a hand gesture for that.

como's is a good place to go if you want to "go out" for pizza instead of ordering in.
my favorite pizza of all time is spinach, mushroom and sundried tomatos with extra sauce, well done.  and como's does it pretty well.
i've had the salad, and it's really nothing to write home about, i would recommend an extra piece of pizza instead.
the patio is awesome, and is one of the best parts about this place.

the bar is a bit overdone, and i have to say i've never been in it during the night time hours... but i can imagine a lot of dudes with their hair slicked back and the intentional faux-beard (you know... the one george clooney made famous?) talking on their cell phones drinking single malt scotches from some dude named glen.  and yes, i'm making a shotgun judgement based on the image of the bar.  deal with it.

located in the heart of downtown ferndale, stop by a local pub and grab a brew afterwards.

This was the location for my Detroit birthday party and it was a great choice, I think!

It almost reminded me of Buca Di Peppo's (not sure if they have those in Michigan). It was heavily decorated for Valentine's Day, which was really fun. We were seated in a private area in the back, which was perfect for my large and somewhat loud party.

The menu is pretty standard for an Italian restaurant. The table got several appetizers, but the only one I tried was the fried ravioli. I wasn't too impressed, it was really tough and chewy. I also ordered a small Ceaser salad to start. This was good, although there was alot of dressing. I might order the dressing on the side in the future.

My group ordered a few extra large pizzas to share, and then a few people also ordered separate entrees. The pizza was really delicious! It was ginormous, and was somewhat thin and dripping with cheese. I also tried the fried shrimp, which I enjoyed. Portions were huge.

Our service was really exceptional. We had two dedicated servers for our party, and they were both charming and funny, even when we had them running. Even the busser was fun.

If I lived in the area, I would be back. They were even open until 2am on a Sunday night!

This place is always crowded!  I'm not sure if I ever had any of the entrees there, just the pizza, which was pretty good.  There's both seating indoors & a patio (I think covered).  I never sat outside.  I've heard this place is an old neighborhood institution & has been around forever!  Oh yeah, & they like decorating for the holidays, big time!

Located on the northeast corner of Woodward & 9 Mile.

Right in the heart of Ferndale, Como's is always a good option for happy hour or during the weekend. It's hard to miss the red awning as you drive down Woodward. When it's so beautiful outside, you just want to sit outside on the patio and enjoy some pizza with your friends. While I agree that the pizza is not the best in the world, it is good and definitely goes well with a nice alcoholic beverage. They also have live entertainment every now and then, which makes the place even more packed during the summer. Prices are roughly $15 a person, maybe a little less if you just want an appetizer.

A Ferndale institution, but if you haven't seen it in awhile you won't recognize it.  They bumped it upscale, but the pizza is still good.  And they're open late.

Pizza is great here, salads not so much.  I do love the baked ravioli.  Service is hit or miss, but this is a great spot for people watching.
