Pizza was greasy and disgusting. Oily, overly large cheap pepperoni. I've unfortunately had better dough with frozen DiGiorno Pizza.
Calamari was rubbery and bland, and there's no amount or flavorful enough of a sauce to save it from being inedible.
The food here is obviously geared towards those with an unrefined palate and/or those drinking so heavily (either at Como's or elsewhere within the Ferndale/Royal Oak area) that they just need some sort of sustenance, regardless of its health, quality or taste. I for one do not fit in either of those categories, and thus do not fit into the limited ranks of those who find this "restaurant" anything more that tolerable.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - 1517573009May 3, 2017
This place is a sinking ship.
My husband and I passed a friendly employee who suggested we sit on their patio. We walked through the small restaurant and were amazed at the expansive patio space. There was one other table seated outside with us. We got comfy at a tall table and enjoyed the sun while waiting for a server. Except a server never came. In the 5-10 minutes we sat out there.
We decided to move on to the next restaurant instead of waiting for service that would never show. When we walked out of the restaurant, no employees were to be found. So weird. Anyway, I imagine it won't be long until this place shutters for good.Helpful 9Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Jul 19, 2017
This place has seen better days. Pizza is decent... and that's about it. I usually order the George's special pizza (meatball and ricotta). I really wish however they would not put fennel seeds in the meatballs. To me, fennel tastes like a No. 2 pencil.
Anyway, it seems the last few times I've been in Como's, the quality and service has gotten worse. They were not busy at all when we went there this evening. In fact, we were the only ones in the dinning room when we got there. The server was nice, but the service was really slow. They committed one of my top restaurant sins... they brought out the salads and main courses at the same time... which took over 30 minutes to get by the way. I had to send back my iced tea because it tasted old. The server rarely checked back with us to see how everything was and if we needed refills on drinks. The final restaurant sin committed was when she brought back my credit card and stood there and waited for me to write in the tip and to sign the receipt! Even in the worst restaurants I've never had this happen to me.
I would love for this place to stick around. For this to happen however, the management has to properly train their staff.
I'm tired of all the pretentious "gastro pubs", small plates, kale and quinoa hipster joints opening up in Ferndale. Scotch eggs made from duck eggs? Really? Just stop already!
How about good food, good drinks in a relaxed atmosphere... like how Como's use to be.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 11, 2015
Okay, so I was a little nervous to try this place out based on everyone's reviews. I also did some crowd-sourcing on Facebook and asked people's opinions, and they varied from "great place!" to "I would never eat there again. EVER." However, my experience ended up being okay.
I had a $40 Groupon that I had bought before reading the reviews on here. As soon as you walk in to Como's, there's a sign talking about Groupon/LivingSocial deals, so that was interesting. My boyfriend and I were attending a show at the Fisher, so I figured this would be a good place to eat beforehand.
The waiter was friendly and I asked him what would be the best things to get with our Groupon. I wanted to try the pizza since most have raved about it, so we got a medium pizza with Italian sausage, green pepper, and banana peppers ($15.99), a sampler app ($7.99 each, so $16 total), and later, two cannoli's ($5 each). Something a little weird about the Groupon is that it does say NO BEVERAGES on it ... I assumed this was alcoholic beverages but we did ask and that includes sodas and other non-alcoholic drinks.
THE PROS:
-Pizza was good although overpriced, IMO. The crust was thinner than I thought it would be. When you walk in, you see the "pizza man" (pizza chef, lol) cooking pizzas in their oven, and he was the one who delivered it to our table, so you know that the pizza is very fresh.
-On the app plate (also overpriced, at $7.99/pp - I would say it was worth maybe $10-12 max), we got mozzarella sticks and toasted ravioli (very good), fried zucchini (also good), chicken tenders (okay), fried cauliflower (meh), jalapeno poppers (I avoided since I dislike spicy foods), and I think maybe like one more thing. We got 2-3 of each except a lot of the cauliflower and zucchini. Surprisingly, after the cheese items, my favorite was the zucchini.
THE OKAY:
-Cannoli's were $5 each (a little overpriced, but they were BIG) and were just okay ... I still cleaned my plate, though. They tasted like pistachio or something.
-Waitservice - I know all of you on here are saying it's AWFUL, but it really was fine until the end, when our waiter seemingly wandered off while we were waiting for the bill. This review would have been like 3.5/5 (rounded up to 4 stars) if not for that, because we literally waited about ten minutes for him to come back.
WHAT TO KNOW:
-They don't take credit cards unless your bill is $10+, so I had to pay cash for the remainder of our bill (about $4) plus the tip.
-They have a patio that seemed like it would be nice in the spring/summer.
I won't make an effort to return to Como's, but I could see myself going there for a drink on the patio in the summer with friends, and maybe ordering a pizza. Green Lantern is still my fave for pizza in the area, though.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sep 2, 2015
Comos is located in fee dale and has been there as long as I can remember! I haven't been here in 20 years but everything is just like it used to be!
We ordered a few apps that were all bomb especially the steak bites. We then had a Pepperoni pie that was amazing. Crunchy, hot and full of pepperoni!
All in all the place did not disappoint and I hate the reviews that bring the stars down! The place is what it is and people on yelp need to stop being cyber bullies!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Victoria M.Novi, MI43126293Jul 1, 2019
Tried to get a table last night. Walked in a singular door to a crowded restaurant. Where the hell is the hostess? Why do I need a reservation to eat pizza? Why the hell did my mother come here and spend 54$ on a pizza on salad and 1 pop week prior?
What happened to the place?
How about have a sign and directions as to how to get a table!?
Absolute shit show. Won't ever come again.
Your "hostess" let me walk around for 10-15 minutes before directing me as to where I needed to check in.
No help. What is this place?
Don't worry, I walked out and ate somewhere else.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mike P.Sterling Heights, MI42878Mar 26, 2017
I have traveled Woodward Avenue and have passed the big bright neon sign identifying Como's in Ferndale for many years. Como's has been in business serving pizzas and Italian fare since 1961. We finally decided to give it a try this Saturday night on the way home from the "D".
We parked in back in the municipal lot for a small meter fee and walked into Como's . We were promptly greeted and seated in a booth. The establishment is divided into s dining and bar area and reminded us of a step back into time. I would call it classic old style Italian charm. Both the bar and dining areas were busy with many patrons enjoying the experience.
Once seated my wife and I were asked for our drink orders and provided menus. Pricing for all of the menu items was very reasonable with many selections available (pizza, sandwiches, salads, pasta, chicken, seafood). My wife selected the chicken piccata (with 2 sides) and I chose a meatball sub with a side of minestrone soup.
The soup was served quickly, was nice and hot and was full of vegetables. Exactly the way I like it. The entrees were served immediately after consuming the soup. A genorous helping of chicken piccata (4 pieces) was served along with s side of spaghetti and garlic mashed potatoes. It was served hot and had good flavor with capers in lemon butter sauce. My toasted meatball sub was also served hot and covered with provolone and meat sauce. The server also added a side of extra sauce which was appreciated.
Our dining experience was completed by sharing an order of the cream brûlée. Overall high marks on the appetizer and entrees. Average on the dessert. A little slow in getting the check at the end but overall an enjoyable dining experience for the price . Definitely will return to try some of the other Italian cuisine offerings.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 15, 2016
I have not visited Como's in ~35 years. Back then, my GF lived nearby ... and there were not a lot of decent, nearby restaurant options. I can only recall Rialto, Anna's & Om Cafe. Her son was a very picky eater and got car sick a lot ... we ate at Como's a lot. Not much has changed. Well, they did add a deck.
So why did I return? I had a business lunch; yes, on a Saturday. Fly Trap was slammed, probably 20 people waiting. Como's was ... empty ... at noon ... sit anywhere.
The biggest plus was Destiny, our server. Prompt, attentive, efficient & friendly ... but not particularly knowledgeable about what's happening in the kitchen. Do you grind your own sausage for the Italian Sausage sandwich? She didn't know. Sweet or spicy? She didn't know. Regardless; she did a 3+ star job on the fundamentals of her job. Ownership/mgt is failing her.
The meatball sub ... was served hot. I expect that all the ingredients were all sourced from Sysco or GFS. I would not order it again. Will I return? Yes, in another 35 years.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0
