I can't believe so many of my friends have came here/know about this place..BUT NEVER TOLD ME!!!
Anyways, I came with 2 friends this past Thursday around 530pm, so it was empty when we walked in, but later more people started showing up..and they were ALL korean and spoke korean so this place must be decent.
They give you tea and always come back to refill and the little side dishes.
I ordered the "Eel Stone Bowl Bibimabab bibimbob with sea eel" at $12 after much debate because i came here to originally eat the korean fried chicken, BUT i shall return for that another day. I didn't get a drink..but my friend did and omg..her green tea shake= AMAZING.
Okay so my eel was okay, I think it was a bit over cooked..not what i'm used to, i been too spoiled with really good eel stone bowls in the past so this wasn't up to par. There was a lot of bones. But the egg was good and the rice was just the right amount. I usually don't like the red sauce they give you because it's really spicy/weird tasting, but w/o that it would be tasteless so I put some in and it came out okay. I liked it, except wish the eel..was more fresh? less over cooked?
I also go to taste the "vege ramen with cheese" i liked it..but i dont think my friends were that big of a fan of it because they said it was too "cheesey" i love cheesey stuff so...i thought it was pretty good.
I think my other friend ordered this "Stir Pan Fried Jeyuk* no 50+ rice cake, kimchi, & clear noodle" or something of that sort... I tried the rice cake...not like the usual rice cake you get if you just order that dish..needs more sauce. There was a LOAD of kimchi though...and comes with bowl of rice.
Free wifi! Ask for the password! I'm actually excited to come back and actually try the chicken next time.
Service is nice. It's very colorful in their and i just love the tea :) We were there for a while..but wasn't rushed or anything...even though it was busy we had to wave them down for the checkHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Katie F.Boston, MA20911259Jun 3, 2008
Update (July 9, 2008): HOLY SHIT, BRING BACK COLOR!!!
*********
I LOVE COLOR.
You cannot go without getting their famous chicken. Maybe I'm just weak sauce, but that chicken really makes me sweat... and I always say that you're not really eating Korean unless your nose is running and you have a good sweat stache to show for it. Delicious.
The waitresses are super sweet. They always refill the banchan, which is pretty mediocre. But don't you worry, I ALWAYS eat my banchan. Plus, you really can't mess up kimchi and kong namul (boiled seasoned bean sprouts). Also, they bring out the food fairly quickly. I'm not sure about the experiences of previous reviewers, but every time I go (and that's pretty often) they're really fast.
My last trip, I ordered the budae jjigae. I wasn't a particular fan. It was a little too sour for my taste. However, I am a huge fan of their soon dubu jjigae. Their stew is particularly yummy. It's good and hearty, which makes a great meal on a cold day. I'm also not afraid to tell you Yelpers that I've indulged many times in their classic Korean ramyun. SO FATTY DELICIOUS.
Another plus is their music choice. Top notch. I feel like I'm in a Korean drama every time I go in. Eating my chicken feels EPIC.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Joyce K.Waltham, MA5926599Jul 27, 2006
From the name to the bubbly, cute-sy decor of this tiny Korean establishment, you'd think the food would be brought out wrapped in pink parchment and covered in chocolate buttons but surprisingly enough, the adorable waitress brings out some deceptively MEAN Korean dishes. WHAM! Sizzling stone pot of bibimbap ($10)! Mmmmmm....
I really like the complimentary "bori-cha" (barley tea) that they serve with the dishes; really reflects the type of hospitality you'd get if you were actually in Korea.
I felt kind of weird coming here with my brood of uncomfortably fratty white friends since everyone else here is Korean...painfully Korean from their permed hair to their monstrous Louis Vuittons and Burberry raincoats.
The kim bap (Korean maki - heartier than the Japanese kind) is solid and since kim bap is kind of a street vendor food, it's hard to find in Boston so I was grateful either way. Their sides come in cute little dishes and their ra-botki (I'm butchering the words but basically it's ramen+dduk-botki...a genius example of Korean ingenuity) which is also a street vendor food and hard to find at a legit Korean restaurant like Koreana or Suishaya which leans more towards Korean BBQ.
The Korean pop music really bumps of the fun quotient of the meal and the check comes with dum-dum lollipops for the whole table!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 5Oh no 0 - Nov 2, 2011
Color is one of the only Korean restaurants in Boston that I can tolerate.
Jokingly being a jerk aside, the service was decent for a Korean restaurant and the decor was okay. I don't mind the rainbow-like colors at all, as it lends to an authentic flavor the restaurant brings (i.e. it's kinda fobby). Color is a small place, so coming in a large group might be problematic.
Their fried chicken came in a plentiful portion, but a little too sweet for me. I'm just not really a big fan of Korean fried chicken, as I don't care for sweet chicken. However, the chicken itself was tender and large
Other than that, they do the traditional dishes well and they give you a good amount of panchan. Their bibimbop is good.
The thing I like is that Color's prices are good, definitely not the ripoff that a lot of Boston Korean restaurants are. (mind you, I'm spoiled from having experience in LA, NY/NJ, and Seoul)
There's no bathroom, so bring an empty bottle. :-PHelpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 29, 2010
Came here with a friend. We didn't know where to go, but she noticed that this was reviewed nicely here (so thank you past reviewers for leading us here! We were not disappointed). I had NEVER had Korean food in this country before (only had it once in China, and it was a barbecue place...mmmm). I was really afraid because I always walk by Korean places, look at menus, and can hardly find anything that seems appetizing. I didn't know Color's menu very well before coming (I skimmed through it online). I was sort of afraid.
First impression upon walking in- What cute place!!!
We started with deep-fried beef dumplings as an appetizer. About 8 or 9 come on a cute rectangular plate that has a tiny compartment for the dipping sauce, which is sort of like a vinegary-soy sauce with scallions in it. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
She had a spicy ramen dish with those rice cakes in it (SO sorry I don't remember the name) and she loved it. I had the friend chicken. DELICIOUS. For the small portion they give you 4 wings and 4 legs, deep-fried and smothered in this sweet-tangy sauce. Amazing. Make sure if you get the chicken, you have plenty of napkins and wet wipes for your hands afterward! :)
I am not a big stew-eater or soup-eater , so I don't know if I'd personally get anything else, but I'm good with the dumplings and fried chicken!
I'd say "I'd go back!" but I already did. I made my husband try those dumplings. HA. So with that, I'll say, i'll go back again! And maybe I'll be adventurous and try a stew.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 23, 2012
Since the last time I've been Color has re-decorated the interior, plays more modern music, and in general, has become a more "hip place". They have a simple menu all displayed on a page of laminated paper.
I went with a group of friends and they all but me ordered beef bulgogi kimbap ($7.50), where as I ordered the beef bulgogi ($9), which was a nice steaming hot plate of meat boiled in sweet soy sauce with rice. My friends' order all came out on a huge dish instead of individual plating, which I thought was interesting. They always give patrons a tea to drink, which I never really liked since it was an odd bitter/burnt taste to it, but! it's supposed to be very good for you. (something about aiding digestion and good for the skin)
Anyways, they also have their fried chicken drenched in sauce. It used to be wings and drumsticks drenched in their interesting sauce but now it's boneless chicken pieces. I haven't tried it, but I was never into the drenched part of the chicken.
Color is a pretty good restaurant to hang out at and get some korean food that's priced just right. I'm not too impressed with their food though, but if you want something simple , this is the place to go.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Wei W.Woburn, MA1322781191Aug 24, 2008
You go in smelling like yourself and come out smelling like the grill. But that's not a bad thing, especially if you've been sitting there for two hours, like we did.
Now that it's open again, I was able to try it out for the first time after my friends raved about it. We had a get-together there on a Saturday night, with groups of 5+ people coming and going. Luckily, we called for reservations beforehand so that our table would be set up.
The service was slower than it could have been, although they were quite busy. At least they kept the water refills coming.
The food was delectable - we ordered seafood scallion pancake, kim bap, and Color's chicken as appetizers. SO good for the money! Entrees consisted of bulgogi, kalbi, and seafood soft tofu jigae. I don't recall eating so much food so quickly, but we did. We also ran out of some of the side dishes and had to get more. And the lollipops after dinner that came out with the check? Such a sweet little touch - reminds me of what restaurants in Chinatown used to do for kids.
Bottom line - the food is good for the money. Nowhere else have I found such large portions of kalbi and bulgogi for so cheap. YUM.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - May 2, 2008
I really wanted to like this place. It's right near where I live. The service was a little slower than I expected. The staff were very friendly however. I ordered bulgoki, and it was only mediocre. The portion was just average, and the meat was over marinated. It was too wet. Nothing close to what my mom makes.
Again, I really wanted to like this place. I liked the atmosphere of the different colored walls and the pop music. However, I was disappointed with my meal. I like Han River much better.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Dec 24, 2009
I am a faithful fan of Color. I like their food and the price is pretty reasonable. I go to BC so whenever I want Korean food I go to color. Its either here or 88 but food over at 88 is mad expensive.
Their yangyum chicken is off the hook. I think their chicken tastes way better than bonchon but thats just my opinion.
So if you are a poor college student and want to pig out for a reasonable price with your friends and whatnot, I would definitely recommend this place.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 4514632254Jun 16, 2010Updated review
Every time I am there, the waitress is always so nice and helpful but there were a few things she did that bothered me that dropped it down a notch.
I don't like being rushed out of a restaurant especially if it isn't busy and even when I am still eating. This has happened a few times making me not really want to come back.
I am not sure why but maybe there has been customers who don't tip but when I gave her money for the check, she opened the checkbook on our table and counted the cash in front of me and then said I didn't tip enough. But I then told her she miscounted it, and showed her; in which she apologized.
Has that only happened to me ????Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Dec 27, 2009Previous reviewThis is MY go to place for home style Korean FOOD. I come here and I feel so happy afterwards. It's not pretentious. The waitress is so sweet and nice. I love that the food here doesn't break the bank. It's affordable and it tastes good. I love the side dishes with free refills! I always order specific things that I like and it comes out the way I like it. I am not in love with everything on the menu but I think there is always something for everyone in here.
The food comes out fast so the wait isn't too long but when I come here for dinner, it is always busy. The great thing is that the waitress does not kick you out or rush your experience. You can sit and chat as long as you want.
The popular specials are on the wall, so if you don't know what you like, just look up! Me and my friends actually almost ordered everything on there.
Just a warning: Use your bathroom before you come here, they don't have one.
