This place is great. They were very nice about delivering outside of what must have been their normal delivery area and when we went to the restaurant the customer service was amazing there too. The portions are huge, my husband and I order the three piece and split it. The kids fish and chips was huge too. The tartar sauce is AMAZING! And I can't even believe I'm saying that about tartar sauce, I mean, tartar sauce? But yeah, I wanted to put it on everything. I also like that I didn't feel like I'd taken a bath in their deep fryer like I have in other fish and chips places. It's nice to not feel like you have to change your clothes after lunch.

It's a little restaurant located in the westfield strip mall area. But when you walk in the ambience is welcoming and feels like you stepped into a little mom and pop store off the cape.
I've come back here multiple times and have tried most of the menu. If this is your first time trying it out - definitely get the 2 piece combo. - you can order the cod or the basa and try it with the lemon tartar sauce! Yum! This is far best the best fish and chips spot in northern NJ.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Cyn T.Jersey City, NJ597410May 23, 2014
Reasons to come here.
1. If you don't like fish...they have fried Oreos...and they are divine.therefore in my opinion there is something for everyone here.
2. Their fish n chips are dee-effin-licious the Two piece basa with chips was actually a huge portion, I would have been fine with 1piece....but I'm fluffy so I fluffed up my order.
3. Customer service: They have this amazing sassy lady who takes your orders. I almost feel like I could go there just to tawlk gossip, but wouldn't because she'd probably tell me about myself.
4. Tarter sauce is probably among the top 2 best I've ever had.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Andre N.Union, NJ12108Aug 14, 2012
Love this place. Found it recently here on Yelp and it being about 15 mins from where I live makes it all the better.
Best Fish & Chips type place that i've had in Jersey. It's small and cozy, prices are good, food is excellent.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 4013223463Feb 3, 2013
Delicious place for flaky moist fish and fresh cut chips. The time i went there the batter was a little soggy but the flavor was there and the fries were freshly cut. i also like my fish and chips with a cold glass of guinness lol, but i wont hold it against them. great place for some fish and chips. Its more of a take out spot.

I lived in England for 10 years. I have high fish and chip standards. So does my dad, who is actually British, and my mom, who spent way longer over there than I did.
Cod Almighty satisfied us all and made my dad happier after a dinner than I've seen him in years.
Thanks to my mom's bright idea and craving for seafood and a funky atmosphere, Cod Almighty was on the cards for dinner. Huge salads, well-priced, fresh, healthy fare and batter on the fish that would rival England's were enjoyed by all. The chips weren't quite UK in style, but any place that actively places vinegar out for human consumption - with fish and chips - knows its stuff. And as these pieces of potato were not cookie-cutter in size and still had potato skin attached; good enough for me and my chip-perfectionist family.
I eat exclusively seafood when I can. If it swam, I'll consume it. The salmon I had here was perfection, the fish tacos I sampled better than any I'd had before.
Damn fine food. And damn fine chips. We will be back.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Michelle S.Cranford, NJ142256137Aug 24, 2012
I have no experience with fish and chips (besides when I worked at Arthur Treacher's - though I was smart enough to never eat the food there) so I'm not basing this review on how authentic Cod Almighty Chippery is. I can just say that the food is great, by far my favorite spot in Westfield to grab lunch.
I've tried the fish and chips and fish tacos - both were delicious. The fish is batter fried (though you can get it grilled) but isn't greasy or heavy. The chips are delicious, cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Also, I'm not a big baked beans fan but their baked beans are so good. Everything is homemade and you can taste it. Make sure you check the Specials board - it changes daily and has some great choices. Love this place - not sure why it took me almost 2 years to try it out!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Jan R.Clark, NJ9105110Aug 17, 2011
Since the Fish & Chips in Fanwood closed, this is the closest you're going to get to that for just fish & chips, but this place has so much more. The fries are not round chips, they're french fries, seasoned nicely. The fish is very good quality ~ they have many types of fish to choose from, but for the traditional fish & chips there are 2 choices ~ BASA & COD. They will give you the BASA unless you specify Cod. We've been there 3 times (twice for dinner, once for lunch) and tried both and they're both great: nice white tender fish with a very crunchy (breaded) crust. It's served in a small plastic basket that has a liner of waxy paper with a reproduction of a 1730's newspaper.
They will GRILL anything you'd like (instead of frying), but the frying is done with a transfat-free oil.
A list of the specials each day is on a board outside and also one on the wall inside the restaurant. They are helpful in answering any questions.
The size of the fish portion (for the fish & chips) is larger than you'd expect... especially if you went to the old Fish & Chips in Fanwood. For lunch, 1 piece is plenty for a normal woman; kids under 10 could split 1 piece, but you might want extra chips for them.
There are many speciality sandwiches (even a chicken sandwich) and fried vege's (or you can have them grilled). There are salads on the menu but we didn't have one, nor did I see other people having salads. I think everyone just wants that great, fried fish!
It's not too expensive for seafood... the COD fish & chips is $9.75 (1 piece of fish); $14.95 for 2 pieces of fish & the same amount of fries that comes with the 1 piece order.
The BASA fish & chips is $3. - 5. less. You place your order and take a seat; they'll bring the food to you.
The decor is nautical with a nice ceramic tile floor. The dining area is small with 6 small tables for 2; there is also a counter with 5 round stools, so a max of 17 can eat there at 1 time. There are 2 small tables (for 2 people each) outside.
The restaurant can be loud because of the noise of fish frying and the powerful exhaust equipment (which obviously works well), but it's worth it because the food is good.
It's the type of place that you can strike up a conversation with other diners there ~ at least that's how it was the 3 times we went ~ it's a friendly place! Very casual attire is fine.
You can BYOB of wine or whatever & they provide the glasses. They have fried Oreos or Twinkies for those that have a sweet tooth. We haven't tried either of them yet.
You can read the menu on their website before you go to get an idea. The website is www.codalmightychippery.com
If you order take out or take home what you didn't consume, they use VENTED paper containers so the breaded crust doesn't get soggy. :-)
You can get take-out but the order & delivery are done through another company called Delivery Now.Helpful 6Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Trang N.Cranford, NJ742356Jan 24, 2011
Mmmm fried-licious-ness. God bless the man or woman who invented deep frying.
So we all know that deep fried foods aren't great for you, but yet it still gets me coming back for some artery clogging, cholesterol and potential increase of a stroke.
However, I just won't sink my teeth to just any fish fry. First it must be hot. It must be crispy, and not greasy. Lastly fish must be soft and tender in the middle. Cod Almighty you have reach my regular list to eat at.
There's no fanciness to the batter, maybe it's better that way to keep it simple.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - John S.Cranford, NJ27May 30, 2012
Westfield's best seafood is located in a little strip mall several blocks away from its overpriced, usually overrated restaurants.
Cod Almighty is a small place with excellent, consistent food! I do takeout here once a month and it has not disappointed. You can dine-in and the atmosphere is casual and staff is friendly. It's a little small, but a bottle of wine or beer (available a few doors down) helps with that!
Everything is homemade, and it shows - especially in the fries, cole slaw and baked beans (which are hands-down the best I've had anywhere). The fish, basa, is consistently plump, flavorful and juicy. Other fish and chips places (I'm thinking of Fanwood's original chippery) batter the hell out of fish. Not here. The fish stands out. Another review mentions attention to detail and I agree - down to the vented paper bags which keep the food from getting soggy.
Fish tacos and fat fish sandwiches are outstanding and my only problem with them is that they're so good I don't try the other items. I hope people will continue to support places like this where emphasis is placed on real food, prepared well.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
