Coastal Electrolysis

So glad I found Shawna and Coastal Electrolysis. There are not many people that do electrolysis so I was nervous to try it out. Turns out I had nothing to worry about! Shawna makes the experience very comfortable and not painful at all! I've seen a tremendous difference in my chin hair after probably 6-8 sessions. It went from dark thick hair to hardly anything. Now I just go for touch ups If needed. Shawna is super sweet, fun to chat with, and very knowledgeable. I would recommend Shawna to anyone looking to get electrolysis done.

I was blown away by Shawna's professionalism! Her office both puts you at ease and is very clean and well maintained. Shawna's knowledge and experience was evident with her deft execution of the electrolysis procedure. At the beginning of the procedure, she eased her way into the electrolysis so nothing was unexpected or sudden and once she accessed my pain tolerance she worked quickly and efficiently. She managed to treat my entire area of concern in just 45 minutes! I never expected that. I will be back for sure and can't recommend her services any more highly

Shawna is wonderful at what she does. She is honest, patient, and kind.
She worked at Nordstroms long ago and has that wonderful customer service mentality. She is very professional as well as easy going (this is a challenging combination for most people to pull off but she does!).

I am very grateful for the help that Shawna has given me so that I don't have to shave my chin and some other facial areas any more!

First, I want to preface this by saying that I waited a long time before writing this review because I wanted see how it went with another electrologist before giving Shawna's work a fair assessment. Shawna herself is absolutely sweet, personable, and very accommodating. Her office is clean and in a nice area. So, this review is not about her, it's purely about her work, which turned out to be extremely disappointingly for the amount of time and money I spent with her.

A little background...I've been blessed with beautiful, thick Indian hair from both sides of my family. Unfortunately, this also means that I have excess hair that's black, dense, and coarse in unwanted places, specifically facial hair on my chin, under chin, and sides. I'm not a good candidate for laser since I have a darker complexion, so electrolysis was the only the way to go as a permanent solution.

Shawna was the first electrologist that I ever saw and at the time I didn't know what a good electrologist's work looked like. I first began seeing her in June 2015 after purchasing a Groupon (back when she was still at the Oceanside location). My first few treatments were 1-hour each and she used thermolysis. I had very bad reactions to this (breakouts and scabs) because she needed to use high settings to treat my coarse hair, which damaged my skin. Thankfully, there was no permanent damage or scarring. In the next few treatments she used the galvanic blend method, which was much more comfortable. Still, I decided to stop because it was becoming very expensive ($120/hr) and time-consuming (I had 2 clearings, which took at least 4 hours each), and I was not seeing results.

After about 9-months I decided that I could not keep ignoring my facial hair and tried with her again (when she was transitioning to her office at the Encinitas location). From May 2016 to June 2016 I had 1 full clearing (5 1-hour treatments), and about 5 1-hour follow-ups. I thought I had begun seeing some results, but in July 2016 when I went on a long vacation I saw all my hair grow back to essentially the same amount as before my treatments. By that point I had already spent $2,000+ on my total electrolysis treatments and it was extremely disappointing to see almost no change.

In September 2016, after moving to San Diego, I started seeing a much more seasoned electrologist with 20+ years of experience. I wasn't sure if I was going to have the same type of experience (I was thinking, "Maybe it's me...maybe my hair is just too difficult to treat"), but I figured I should at least try again. I'm happy to say that I'm extremely pleased with my new electrologist's work (you can read my full review on the Pacific Permanent Hair Removal Yelp page). In the same amount of time that I spent with Shawna I started seeing real results that I hadn't seen before, we're covering much more area than I did with Shawna (we only had time to tackle my chin during our 1-hr sessions, but now I'm getting my chin, under chin, and sides treated in 1-hr with my current electrologist), and my current electrologist's prices are almost half those of Shawna's ($70/hr vs $120/hr, which I appreciate as a full-time student).

In sum, I think because Shawna had only a few years of experience and probably limited exposure with more challenging case like my special features (darker skin, coarser hair), she simply didn't have the proper experience/technique to be precise, work quickly, and give me quality treatments. The result was ineffective treatments, slim to no results, and a big waste of my time and money. I am thankful, however, that her work didn't result in permanent skin damage.

I absolutely loveee Shawna and her electrolysis services. My sister and I had gotten laser on our faces a few years ago and it had sparked more hair growth and we were looking for a place to fix it (since laser not only didn't work but made it 10 times worse) my sister found Shawna through groupon and said she was the best so I had to try it out for myself and have been extremely pleased with the service and the results ever since going. Her prices are fair and she works with you by giving package deals. She is also very sweet and I always look forward to seeing her. Highly recommend if you are looking for electrolysis and also recommend her OVER a laser treatment if you were looking to get laser instead.

Shawna is awesome! I found her on Yelp back in January after moving to the area. The results I have seen are amazing! She is gentle, personable and extremely accommodating! If you are questioning weather or not to start the process, do it! If you are looking for someone to help you get going on your journey to less hair and more confidence....Coastal Electrolysis is your place!
