About the Business
At Coal Yard Coffee, we love art in all its forms: a painting by a local artist, the tunes flowing from a jazz musician's saxophone, a handcrafted drink made by a barista who cares, and more. We roast our coffee in house -- from bean to brew, we pour passion into every mug. Our breakfast burritos and local pastries make perfect coffee companions, too. Community members feel comfortable and inspired at our live music events and our Tarot readings. With eclectic decor, good vibes, and of course, great coffee, we've made our space one where everyone feels truly welcome.

Finally another spot that offers a white roast! I love that and the fact I can buy white roast beans for my own use! The drinks made with this are my current go to and favorite.
The only thing keeping this place from a 5/5 is the long waits to the point it's faster to just go somewhere else. Not sure if it's understaffing or whatHelpful 3Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Marc E.Indianapolis, IN0121Apr 13, 2024

Coal Yard is a place that keeps getting better with time. It's been around for a while, but grown in what it offers and what role it plays for the neighborhood. Starting at the ice house on Ritter as a coffee roaster, they opened a coffee shop in a small building at the Bonna coal yard, and then moved back to the ice house where they are now. In that time, they've slowly grown their hours and their space to the cozy, exposed-brick spot now that reminds me of the coffee shops I used to spend a lot of time at in college.
Besides coffee, which they roast and sell whole bean as well, Coal Yard has prepared food and pastries, craft sodas, smoothies, and their own ice cream which they sell by the pint. They constantly feature a rotation of local art and host events to support the scene. I can squirrel away far too long here, knocking out lesson plans and imbibing on deliciousness.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jun 2, 2022
Coal Yard's new location at Ice House Coffee Roasters is fantastic! They have a spacious outdoor seating area with a variety of seating options in addition to comfortable indoor seating that I know will be cozy in colder months. The open garage door on nice days really adds to the ambiance! It's great for those with pets, as I was able wait outside with my dog and still see the menu while my husband ordered for us. The patio is dog friendly and they offer free pup cups!
I enjoyed my oat milk latte! I opted for unflavored, but they have several unique syrups for those that are looking for something sweet. I noticed marshmallow, lavendar, raspberry, and even peanut butter. The barista was really friendly, and she did a great job getting drink orders out even as it got busier.
I didn't have issues with parking since we walked, but I did see a few customers get confused on where to park as they were pulling up. Visitors can park on the neighborhood streets or the gravel lot nearby.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Etolia W.La Sierra, Riverside, CA1672151Oct 23, 2023
Loved the ambiance of this place. This little coffee shop was everything! Very different from other coffee shops I've been to. The coffee tasted amazing as well, highly recommend for a place to do your work. The service was amazing as well. I believe her name was Patty and she was very sweet and nice! I didn't catch the gentlemen's name but he was very nice as well! Overall one of my favorite coffee places in Irvington.

Just made it to their new location on S Ritter Ave, and I am so happy this place is walking distance from my house! My fiancé and I both got cold brews with sugar free salted caramel syrup and cream, and they are sooo tasty. I love this place because unlike other coffee shops, they usually have a plethora of sugar free syrups to choose from. My fiancé is diabetic, so sugar free is a must for us. Normally we're stuck just getting SF Vanilla, but Coal Yard has vanilla, salted caramel, caramel, and sometimes even non-standard flavors such as Strawberry (was crossed out when we went so seems they were out of it). We also got a cinnamon muffin which was soo good! It was baked well, moist, crumbly, and quite big! The icing on top made it all the more delicious. For a snack with our coffee it was very pleasant.
The coffee house itself is very unique. They don't seem to have as much local art (yet) as their old location, but inside is still very interesting to gaze around. A few vignettes of comfy seating are placed inside. The paved courtyard in the middle will probably have more seating when the weather gets warmer, so it'll be a nice spot to sip some iced drink and chill.
Parking may be a little confusing. The middle courtyard is not to be driven on. Parking on the gravel lot next door is recommended, or on the street. They said they should have signage soon.
Staff is very friendly and welcoming of all people!
Come here for some local Irvington vibes, great coffee, and a nice place to sit and chill, work (wifi available), or catch up with a friend.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Dec 7, 2022
This was my first visit to Coal Yard. I went at 8:30am and there was no line, although there was only one employee so it they were finishing up the last order before I could order. The staff member was very friendly and suggested a steamed cold brew (it was a chilly morning). I had never heard of steaming a cold brew before and it was not on the menu so I was intrigued. Apparently cold brew has less acidity so it can be a little friendlier to sensitive tummies (or so the staff told me that - cannot confirm if that's true). The drink was actually very interesting and I would order it again! Steaming the cold brew brought out more of the nutty flavors which I really enjoyed. Overall, the place is a small quaint local stop - I adored it! It might not be the fastest on your morning route but worth the slow down!

This place is amazing. The coffee is made with love and taste so good! The staff is so friendly and caring, I like their spicy mocha latte they have. The atmosphere is super relaxed, such a great place to grab a coffee or hang out.
