The only problem with YELP is the search function. For instance, I'll try to find a place that serves a chocolate malt and the results have to be sifted with a fine tooth comb. Lots of places that don't even serve shakes come up.
Citizen burger was intriguing, with a significant volume of good reviews.
The folks up front were very friendly. The place has the feel of an old pub.
Ordered the steakhouse burger, onion rings and a lager.
The burger was amazing. While tall, the bun was substantial enough to support the pile of ground beef, bacon, cheese and shoestring onions. The onion rings were unlike anything I've had before. Not coarse but smooth batter. The onions were done perfectly and surprisingly juicy.
Beer was cold and refreshing. Bathrooms very clean as I washed up. Lots of screens, most above the bar. Natalie took my order quickly and efficiently. She checked on me regularly.
Another great find. Thanks Yelp!
Oh - even better! On my way out I let one of the hosts know I'd found the place through Yelp as I was in search of a chocolate malt. I asked, "Do you even have shakes?"
"No. But right across the way at Chaps, you may find one. And there is another place nearby (I didn't catch the name of the business) it has a lot of old fashioned items."
Very helpful recommendation. I did indeed have a great chocolate malt at Chaps!
Thank you, Citizen Burger Bar!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - 415105Jan 24, 2024
Overall Taste and Cost
This place was a good burger spot. The price made sense for the portion sizes given. There was so much food, I wasn't able to finish everything.
The onion rings were the biggest l've ever seen. I will say the onions could have been just a tidbit smaller for my liking. The fries were the best thing I ordered. The burger however was extremely dry (kinda my fault for asking for well done!). I just couldn't eat it, it was the driest well done burger I have ever tried.
Location & Aesthetic
This place was located in a downtown "mall" like area. There were so many other places surrounding it. There was a nice outside seating area in front of the building. There were plenty of seats also located inside. Because it's similar to an outdoor mall the parking/ trying to find a park was a little difficult. Service was okay.
Overall this is a place I would recommend and try again.

This is our go-to place when we're craving a really juicy, flavorful burger.
They have several great signature options (my favorite is the steakhouse) as well as a section that allows you to create your own burger (which includes non-meat options).
Service is always very prompt and pleasant. The place seems well-run, and staff seem happy. (Hope that's true!)
It's a more casual, trendy vibe - last time I went, they played different sports games on the bar tvs with jazz music in the background, which was pleasant. Overall, this is a really great spot!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 404196430Mar 30, 2024
We were so thankful to find this large, buzzy burger spot with plenty of TVs on the Downtown Mall to watch some March Madness! We had just eaten dinner, so we didn't order any food (though everything the people around us were eating looked delish), but they had a great list of beers on tap, and the bartender was super attentive and welcoming. Would absolutely come back to try their burgers and enjoy the atmosphere!

This place is a big fat no! Waiting for overpriced tough hamburgers witere the pickle is better than the burger! Cmon cville, let's do better! Go around the corner and get a not so snobbish burger at jacks!
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Aug 21, 2023Previous reviewWhy was my hamburger so tough?
One of the most likely culprits is that the meat in your hamburgers is too lean. When making hamburgers it is important to use meat with a higher fat content in order to ensure that the burgers hold together and remain juicy.
Some recommended fat content for hamburgers is around 20%. Another reason burgers can be tough is if you handle the ground beef too much when forming the patties. When shaping the patties it is important to handle the beef as little as possible as too much manhandling can make the burgers tough.
Restaurants tend to prepare juicy burgers by focusing on the quality and freshness of the beef. Quality burgers at restaurants typically involve beef that is ground daily and free from additives, preservatives, and fillers.
This was not the case! The burger was tough and filled with sinew ! Just not a pleasant experience!
Service was great ! Fries were just crumbles ! Not one fry over two inches!Mar 4, 2023Previous reviewI don't know if I should give this a five or a one!
Here is my experience: We book a movie at 2 at a nearby theatre. We get atCBB around 12:30 . We get put on a waiting list . We get seated about one . We put our order in about one o five . We didn't get our food until 1:50. At 1:45 we decided to cancel the order . We couldn't find the waitress. As they set the food on the table , we told our waitress we canceled the order! We felt bad , but we have already paid for the tickets and couldn't justify blowing off the movie for over priced hamburgers and slow service. Granted they were slammed . The manager canceled our meal and even asked us did we want to take the "Tasty Burgers" with us ! I said "what" ! Lol Say what one more time!
We paid for our drinks and got to the movie on time ! Pop corn was tasty! The manager hurriedly apologized and the next customer took our place! So moral of story! Allow 2 hours to enjoy these Tasty burgers!
Manger did a good job putting out this fire! Boy , were they overwhelmed!Sep 17, 2022Previous reviewThis place took a hit in quality during covid. It's now up to snuff ! If you like medium rare , ask for rare ! Pink will be over cooked! Certainly not any difference in taste from grass fed ! Service was slow and we almost missed our movie after getting there an hour and 15 minutes early! But the food was hot ! Plenty of it ! I
Had the citizen burger and wifey has regular burger! To our amazement , her top bun fell off ! The waitress was smiles, smiles and more smiles ! We waited more than 5 minutes for a waitress and over an half of hot for food ! All in all we had a great big messy hamburger and we are full ! $52 with tip! Lots of young families there at noon !Aug 8, 2015Previous reviewGreat place and I am stuffed ! The only reason why I don't give the other star is that the waiter didn't know the difference between a German black beir and a red ale like satan's pony! Really not a big deal though because it paired well the CB burger! Waiter was peppy and kept an eye on us ! It did take about 30 minute to get two burgers and fries ! I will say the fried pickle was fresh and a hit !

Excellent ground beef burgers. Can really taste the freshness. Also like the cheese fries for the appetizer.

Such a fun restaurant!
Location & atmosphere:
The downtown mall area is so great and it definitely adds to the experience here! The restaurant is somewhat narrow but goes back so far. They have really large booths that are great for big groups but you still feel like you have your own space!
Drinks/ food
I got a bold rock IPA (local to cville). the cocktails are a little pricy at $14 but the beers and ciders are around $6/8.
I got the citizen burger with sweet potato fries ($2 upcharge). Good burger but was a little messy and difficult to eat (the bun fell apart before I was finished with it). But overall good flavor and pretty good fries.
My friend was gluten free, and they have a gluten free bun available for $2 up-charge. They were unable to make the fries gluten free because of cross contamination with the oil, but she was able to get a side salad; they didn't have any other gf side options than that.
Not the best burger and fries I've ever had, but I really like this place for the atmosphere!Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 18, 2023
We had a good time at Citizen Burger Bar. We were seated quickly in the middle aisle, which wasn't as crowded being in the crosshairs of patrons and staff walking back and forth as we expected. It's a classic feeling bar/restaurant. My boyfriend and I both ordered the citizens burger, which was very tasty and piled high. And we did not expected the fried pickle on the burger to be a full pickle spear, which was really fun.
