Ok this place is not the greatest Chinese food (I was born and raised in Thailand and I've been to China). However, it does serve decently tasty and greasy Americanized Chinese food after bar time. And sometimes, that's exactly what I want -- especially when you're drunk and it's late, greasy Chinese food tastes amazing.
Portion sizes are generous, and any large entrée will easily feed two. The crunchy egg rolls are tasty, and I'd actually say the beef and broccoli is very good even if I were sober (it has two types of broccoli: Chinese broccoli as well as the more familiar variety).
Also, who the hell gave this 4 $$$$ ? Last time I was here I spent just over $30 and fed three hungry men (on two large entrees and some egg rolls) and we probably had enough leftovers to feed another hungry guy. When is $10 expensive?
I have a feeling that some of the poor reviews and the $$$$ rating come from people offended by the potentially controversial naming of the restaurant.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 18, 2015
I'm very disappointed with my experience here! The owner is very rude!!! I'm not one to write terrible reviews but this place deserves it!
I've read some of these reviews before trying this place out and I honestly felt like some of them could have possibly caught the owner at a bad time or possibly be because they are rude to the owner... NOPE! This place is ridiculously rude!! First off, I hesitated to try this place out because of their name.. that sounds racist! 'Chop chop chinaman'? Seriously?! If anyone told me to chop chop or anyone to chop chop I would be offended because what human being wouldn't?!Helpful 15Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Leo S.Chicago, IL1014662Mar 13, 2015
I decided that I should write a review, being a China man and all after eating there.
So I found out about the place from a couple friends (all whites of course). As you could have guessed, they thought the name was rude, racist. I thought the name was hilarious and ballsy (it's not bad to be ballsy in boystown, if you know what I mean lol). Anyway, so I was really excited to try it and decided to go on a monday with another chinese friend but they are closed for lunch.... On monday.... There is no service hour anywhere to be found. It's not on the door, not online, nowhere. I was disappointed, I thought they shut it down already lol they did't I called the next day and was told they don't open till 3 on monday. So I went that night hoping for some classy chinese food. Especially with them writing they serve szechwanese (however the heck y'all spell it - ps it's si chuan in chinese btw js lol)
So I walked in, my first impression was "wtf is on the wall....." The decor is definitely not chinese at all... The owners are nice and friendly but the place, besides the part where you can see and not covered up by shades, the whole place feels like...idk...feels like they sell weird art and stuff. I mean no chinese restaurant would ever use broken windows for decoration... Especially not the quantity they have... I get that window art is a thing now but if you put 10 of them all together they just feel cheap.
Then there is the menu, first thing I saw was crab ragoon, then classic fried chicken, hunnan beef, and all that non szechwanese related stuff.... Like they have nothing from that region... I was kind of disappointed and pissed... Lets say im disappissed lol (i'm funny but this is real)
The price was alright, so I asked the owner, at least I thought he was the owner, what would he suggest and he really couldn't suggest anything. All he said was "the food is good because the chef is Chinese and he knows what he's doing" so... Well... I know he doesn't mean it that way but with that name hanging out there... This just kinda sound racist... Considering you are not selling what you branded to sell and couldn't advertise any of your dishes... Let me just be clear that just because one's chinese doesn't mean they can cook good chinese food. The only thing chinese about the food was there are so little meat and too much vegie to cover up the lack of meat... Not even vegie... Just peppers and chilli peppers....
To me, the name is not offensive but everything else is. That is just my personal opinion, especially when I grew up in the southern area in China right next to szechwan and have similar food and taste..I don't go to a lot of chinese restaurants because I think they don't know what chinese food is... Spring roll is not chinese food and neither is crab ragoon. Fried chicken is not either. This place taste like panda express....honestly I would have never gone in there if they had a different name...or a menu out for me to read before I go in lol it's another one of those places where all the dishes are pretty much the same except one has cashew and the other one has broccoli.
The price is alright.... Well... No it's a bit high for what they serve... I would say good luck to the owners and their love for americanized chinese food...(i mean one of them did tell me he got his inspirations from eating at chinese restaurants) he says they sell authentic chinese curry lololol chinese don't have curry! You guys are selling Thai curry. Just a little fyi. I mean it didn't taste bad... But it wasn't really impressive either....
To pull such name off you guys needs to first, understand chinese culture. Secondly, actually sell bad ass chinese food that is so good so people will shut up about the name and focus more on the food but... You guys aren't really doing either...so like I suggested at the restaurant.. There is no reason for you guys to lose business because of the name... Especially with food like that, people who are used to americanized chinese food are probably going to be your only customers and they are the ones you guys managed to offend the most so... Not a very wise idea lol noo nooo nooooooHelpful 25Thanks 0Love this 17Oh no 0 - Ken L.New York, NY381334Mar 15, 2015
The same people praising this place for being "colorful" are probably the same ones who would find a place with Pickaninny Caricature as a logo and a similar offensive name like 'Coon Chicken Inn' to be "edgy".
Bottom Line: The food is HORRIBLE!!
(And 'honest' review here) The fried noodles was horrible, I was actually grossed out. Now let me tell you about the egg foo young. It looks like a hard piece of fried patty and came out like drowning in some horrible fake tasting, sweet gravy. Took one bite and was disappointed. Didn't taste the hot and sour soup but you probably have no taste buds if you like the food here.
I ordered pickup so I didn't really stayed 'too' long (contrary to the name the service is a bit slow). The inside is uncomfortably warm for the weather. Compared to Mark's, after renovation this place have more tones of grey and black which is actually a little scary. I wouldn't want to dine here even if you give me free wine.
The owner, Larry is a fellow Asian American. Why he would be so tone deaf in creating a restaurant with this name, and subsequently defending it, is beyond me. Just because he's Asian doesn't mean it's ok. And just because you are not offended by something doesn't invalidate someone else's offense. So if you want bad faux Chinese food and support caricature that brings you back in time, this is the place to go.
(Yelp took down my last review, if this 'sincere' review gets deleted, it will be an outrage!)Helpful 19Thanks 0Love this 10Oh no 0 - Joe L.Brookfield, IL37014Mar 18, 2015
This business might have a name that was asking for trouble but it is the business owner's American right to name his private business whatever he wants. You don't need to go there. If you don't understand how he can name his business this idiotic name then you don't understand our freedoms. It's his private property. I noticed all these new negative reviews conviently popped up as soon as a story ran on NPR.
I saw the rat picture. Almost all the restaurants in Boys Town have rats. Boys Town has the highest rat population in the city.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Tom E.Chicago, IL081Apr 21, 2015
I live nearby, made my first visit to this new shop tonight, and picked up a take-out order of sweet-and-sour chicken. I'm happy to say it was very tasty, and the 'small' order was a generous size -- more than enough for a meal. The price was a good bargain. The fellow behind the counter was cheerful and polite, and the order was ready in a short time. I'm very happy I stopped in. I will be back to try some of the other dishes.
I wish the owner good luck with the new venture.
Now, about the name: I understand the objections, but I also understand the name was chosen without any malicious intent.
My suggestion would be to come up with a new name for the place to quiet things down. I know that's an expense -- not to mention, it's unpleasant to have to do something like that under duress with people shouting at you like a mob. But I don't think the storm is going to die down any other way, and I would hate to see the restaurant fail over it.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Craig C.Chicago, IL338346Mar 9, 2015First to Review
When I heard this place was opening I thought it must be a joke. Lo and behold, they opened with this terribly offensive name. I've heard the owner's explanation and defense of the name he chose, but I'm sorry, this name is simply offensive. Nearly all of my Asian American friends have told me stories of being bullied and called "chinaman" on the playground as children. Out of curiosity, a friend of mine and I stopped in for take out last Saturday. The man whom I believe to be the owner was pretty rude to us, for no reason at all. The fried rice was pretty good after adding seasoning at home, but I won't be back. Hey, owner! Read these reviews! No one has yet to give you more than one star, and I think I speak for us all when I state that we would give fewer than one star if it were possible.

If a restaurant is to warrant such bad publicity, it's food better be on point. Sadly, the food is worse than the name. I would not recommend.

Food was awful, service was even worse, and the name is even more offensive. It makes Lakeview seem uneducated and it's kinda embarrassing.

Is zero stars an option? This place is funny. People bitching about how long their food is taking. Stoned workers. Don't come here if you are in a hurry that's for sure. This place is a joke.
