About the Business
The Year 2012 will be the 30th year anniversary for Chez TJ. Although much has changed in how we think about food in the last 30 years: trends have come and gone, new alarms about what to eat and not eat have been sounded and some proven unfounded, the cornerstone of Chez TJ goes on unchanged. We prepare the best of what is found in the local markets. We support local farms and producers. We have a small focused staff. We provide intimate, personal attention to each customer in the dining room. We are very proud to be a part of the history of the old house we're located in and happy that our customers have made this possible!

Hello! What's the dress code for this place? Thanks!
A:
I would say smart casual, and you can get away without a tie and jacket. A collared shirt is probably a must, because the decor is traditional and old fashioned, in a more formal sort of way. You will definitely feel underdressed in a collarless… more

We found this restaurant way overpriced for what it delivers. We are frequent fine diners and enjoy michelin star rated places as well as seeking out other top chefs and the best tasting menus.
But when we tried the Chez TJ tasting menu with wine pairings we were very disappointed. The courses were good but the service was surprisingly poor. The hostess did most of the service for our table, so maybe they were short staffed that evening? But it was not excusable. She was clearly not familiar with the menu or contents of the courses which is key to the overall experience. She was also rude when we asked questions - and she never knew any answers.
The service was incredibly slow and for almost every course we did not get our wine pairing until we were wrapping up the course! This is awful for a wine pairing experience. Expecially at these prices.
The chef may be excellent - but with such poor service, the talents of the chef are overshadowed with the overall negative customer service experience.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Swen C.Old Mountain View, Mountain View, CA2612Feb 26, 2024
We recently celebrated a family birthday at Chez TJ and had a wonderful experience. Unlike at other Michelin rated restaurants I have eaten at, I found the atmosphere very warm and we felt like part of the Chez TJ family. All the interactions with the wait staff felt authentic and personal instead of the 'scripted' service we have received at other places. And George, the owner, even spent some time with us and shared stories about the founding of his restaurant; we all loved it and made our time special.
But now to the food: Simply put, it was delicious. I had heard good things about the new chef Stan before we went, and he and his team really delivered. Every course was a piece of art and firework of tastes. We had so much fun talking about all the flavors each of us tasted.
Lastly, a word about the wine pairing, which I definitely recommend. We had a beautiful German Riesling and I texted the label to my dad in Germany, who is a wine aficionado. And even he was impressed about the quality being served: the GG on the label stands for 'Grosses Gewächs', the highest quality of wine made in Germany.
In conclusion: Great job team Chez TJ, keep up the good work!!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 1 - Alice A.Los Altos, CA0191Apr 14, 2024
Living on the Peninsula all my life, has jaded me from seeking out Michelin starred restaurants except only on anniversaries and milestone birthdays. So, on my 28th Anniversary (one that is usually forgotten), I made a reservation for my husband and I at Chef TJ's. Here is a case of fine dining on the Peninsula that I have been remiss in experiencing. To atone, I will write a review which I hope will prod others into trying a place that has been around forever, is Michelin starred and is a unique, exquisite, and flavorful without the pretension of trying too hard.
Chez TJ's offers one contemporary French, six course tasting menu, and the reasonable price of $125. They also have a weeknight four course menu at a lesser price. After dinner there on Saturday, I am looking forward to trying their weeknight offering.
The dinner we had included food so delectable and fresh, I was surprised and delighted. Stan Michalski (an alumni of Quince) is the Executive Chef. His discernment and acumen are perfect for the space and audience. I anticipate only progress of the precision of his palette. From amuse bouche to entrée, Chef Michalski's courses were so flavorful and exquisitely presented that for a moment Iwas not looking out onto a street in Mountain View but transported to a restaurant in Napa or SF. The Australian Wagyu course was luxuriant and flavorful with a broth to meld the meat flavors together. Heavenly!
Christine Johansen is the Pastry Chef. At a time when most restaurants are cutting back on even having a Pastry Chef, Ms. Johansen is a well-acknowledged addition. The delightful strawberry cheesecake dessert was so fragrant with fresh strawberries that it really knocked me out when it was set in front of me. And the additional chocolate and ice cream pastry course particularly welcome to my husband--a lover of rich desserts.
Go to Chef TJ's and try them on any occasion. You will not be disappointed, and you will also skip a drive to SF or Napa.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Tony V.San Mateo, CA43918483Feb 6, 2024
Very intimate and romantic. Food was amazing as well. Service was on point as you should expect it to be. Was a 2 hour tasting menu, and it was delicious.
The wagyu was the highlight of the meal. Truffles were a little underwhelming but not enough to take off a star. Worth every penny.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Mar 31, 2024Updated review
We went here for Valentine's Day, and could not have been more impressed. A cute home converted into an upscale restaurant made for a romantic homie ambience. Service is formal and attentive. The menu was an inventive journey of courses which they made vegetarian for me.

Third time came here with high expectation based on previous experience.
Unfortunately it did not reach the high bar -- atmosphere and service were not good as I expected. Firstly we got seated in a not super comfortable corner, back facing a through a door , the constant breeze/ wind through it made dressed up us super cold. Secondly, when the first appetizer arrived , we were waiting for the utensils to start. And no one mentioned anything or get us hand towel to be ready for it. The first dish experience already set the tone negatively. ...
Overall, the total cost for two of us is about $680, we didn't add any add ons what they spent too much time in trying to sell those to us. Food was good but not at the level of $340 each kind of satisfaction.
A place for special occasion but not high expectations. I missed the dates that Chez still offers dish option instead full course Only.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0 - 124194147Dec 28, 2023
Had a lovely birthday dinner for my dear friend here. As expected at a Michelin restaurant, the service was excellent and the food tasty. When dining here your only option is the chef tasting menu localized based on what is in season- we were here on a winter's evening. Since we were celebrating, they provided us with an extra dessert and the red carpet treatment. The main course venison was the star of the show and we upgraded to truffle risotto which was divine. Another favorite dish was the rabbit. The desserts were also exceptional. Didn't quite get to 5 stars as the service was at times slower than it needed to be, and not all the courses blew us away but we had an amazing experience here and would highly recommend for a special occasion if you have the means.

A little cute house in downtown Mountain View. Looks very cozy from outside. This is my second time going there. This time we had Stan the new chef who started in January this year. Chef is very stiff and no personality towards customers, he showed up at our table for the first course (out of 6) and said something about the dish in a monotone voice, or maybe he was tired at 6:30pm? Who knows? Staffs are everywhere, friendly, typical of high end restaurant, attentive, and explained everything. Food is great with one exception of the beef that I thought didn't go too well with the green sauce.

Great dinner with the family for a birthday. It's literally in a house so it felt somewhat cramped but the food was incredible and would highly recommend

Overall would recommend; I think the food was very innovative and extremely tasty. Maybe a bit pricey, but that's the cost of Michelin French food. Will be back as their menu changes; would highly recommend

Great service and romantic ambiance. Prep yourself before coming here, especially when doing tasting menu. Wagyu is extra fee on the tasting menu and i was expecting it to be very good but it was on the salty side, rest of the menu were great (from bread /appetizer/dishes of rabbit/elk&dessert).Paid total of $1200+ for 3 person (could have gone to French Laundry lol). From my standpoint the price is way to high for whats being offered. Plenty of Parking spot accross the street though.
