Cheryl Hawkins Tax and Accounting

Similar to other reviews, Cheryl was unresponsive for weeks! She did not respond to multiple emails and essentially held our taxes hostage. Cheryl never confirmed if she filed an extension, after our multiple requests. Finally, after multiple calls, her office person returned our call and we were able to finalize our 2022 tax filings, though with late fees, which she never confirmed we had incurred; we would have been fine paying the late fees, but she never bothered to communicate that piece! The day after she finally filed our taxes, we contacted her again with a follow-up question, to which, she never responded. This was not just bad business, but extremely frustrating and concerning. We too, will be filing a complaint with the MN Board of Accountancy!

I will revise this review if Cheryl Hawkins Tax and Accounting becomes responsive and rectifies prior year returns. Cheryl had me file for an extension, and has since not returned any calls or emails, despite me requesting help and providing all requested information. Essentially, I have been abandoned and left without a properly completed return for 2021, no way to track my 2020 refund.

My wife and I had used Turbo Tax until we met Cheryl. Recommended by our financial advisor, Cheryl has been a huge help over the last three years in helping us understand our tax situation better and how not to leave money on the table (Turbo Tax, for example, does not recommend additional actions that can be taken that impact the previous tax year, such as HSA contributions).

After our first meeting we were first pleased with her efficiency and competence in her field, and second annoyed with ourselves for ever trusting software to do the job of a person in this area. The savings are absolutely not worth what you give up.

This year we've added a side business to our tax situation and Cheryl has been able to help out there as well without issues.

In terms of interaction she's able to meet in person or by phone - we've done both and are happy either way. Some reviews have criticized her email responsiveness. We don't have any complaints there, but could see how some might object. We understand tax time is crunch time for that field and reasonable follow-ups may be needed, which we've never found to be excessive.

I attempted to use Cheryl to do my taxes for 2017. I met with her to go over what my needs would be and she explained to me what she would be able to provide. Everything seem fine and supplied her with all my information. After not hearing anything I reached out to her office the day before Tax Day to see what was going on and was told that they were working hard to get everything completed before the deadline and was told that the deadline was pushed back a a day or 2. That was the last contact I have had with them. A friend also attempted to use Cheryl's business this year and has had the same treatment. I found out through them that Cheryl was filling extensions on returns to have more time to complete them, not sure if that's true or not. This would have been fine with me if it would have been communicated. It is now 4 months later after trying to contact her by email, phone, Facebook and stopping at her office and I still have heard nothing. She still has all my information. I have no idea if an extension was filled. I am anticipating a letter from the IRS soon. I have no idea how you can operate a business like this. If you don't have time to do my taxes tell me so I can go elsewhere. Honesty and communication goes a long way. Please send me my information so I can get my taxes completed!
