Having grown up in the tri-state area (yet lived elsewhere the past 22 years) I can't believe I had never heard of this place. It's literally a stone's throw from Haub's Steakhouse where I've been many times over the past 40 years. My in-laws have been bragging on this place the past couple of years, even saying it is better than the legendary Log Inn located a few miles south. Since the Log Inn is #1 on my list of places to enjoy family-style fried chicken, my wife and I had to check this place out to compare.
We had a reservation for 8 and were seated in the cozy stand alone room just inside the entrance to the left. We were greeted by our server Micah who had a wonderful smile and very warm welcome (Midwest, small town, charm). She was friendly, eager to serve, and a great promoter of the place.
Having called ahead and notified we were having family-style, our food arrived within 10 minutes of our arrival. We enjoyed the pepper Jack nuggets as our appetizer and they were very tasty.
The fried chicken was cooked to perfection with a crispy skin coating. The mashed potatoes and milk gravy were very good as well. We enjoyed corn and green beans as our vegetables and the vinegar Cole slaw was a nice complement to the meal. Giant glasses of sweat tea completed the meal!
There's no question we will return again in the future, but feel the Log Inn is a cut above in comparison. In fairness, we have many fond memories of family gatherings and celebrations over the years at the Log Inn and it's a staple when we come to town.
Don't sell the Carriage Inn short however. It's history is rich and food is delicious.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Wendy J.San Francisco, CA044Sep 4, 2023

Excellent! Food is great, and has a nice German pub type of feeling. I suggest the Reuben with German fries!

Wow! What a great time we had at the Carriage Inn today! Everyone I brought was really happy they came.
The staff was so friendly and made us feel so welcome from the moment we walked in the door till we walked back out.
We did family style with fried chicken and ham (& meatloaf). All the food was fantastic and SOOO much of it! The bread pudding - OMG probably the best I've ever had and I've tried many different ones over the years.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Jun 23, 2019Previous reviewGreat atmosphere. Super friendly staff - every single person we came in contact with. We made reservations to eat Family Style. Food was ready when we arrived and was super hot. Very delicious fried chicken, ham, slaw, green beans, and out of this world mashed potatoes. We will definitely be back.

We had gone here a few years in a row for my grandmothers birthday and she is 92 today so a few of us (6) took her there for lunch and the owners mother that works there was so rude and mean to everyone. We had to wait and finally went up and asked for a to go box and my grandmother wanted a small box to take home her coleslaw and the lady said no you may not because I don't believe you want it for that I believe you want it to put a piece of your birthday cake in? Excuse me? So my aunt asked for a small box and she was told no too with the same thing said to her. We spent about 100$ there and we can't get a to go box? She said they are 10 cents a piece! Well not only did my grandma order a big coleslaw to go but she wanted a small box so it didn't make her food in her regular box to make her food mushy. It was the rudest I have ever experienced at any restaurant and to be rude and just hateful the entire time we was there just ruined everything for my grandmothers 92nd birthday. It is sad when someone intentionally is mean to people who are spending a lot of money to make someone's day special. I mean you order food and u can't eat it all and you have to put everything in one box. I think it's very petty and sad! If she is trying to look out for her daughter's business then she might want to smile and be friendly to her customers or she is not doing her daughter any favors. I won't make that mistake again, we will be going to the log inn from here on out! Just thought I'd let everyone know cause it's not everyday your grandma turns 92 and she made sure to be rude to every single member of our family in one single visit for lunch! Never again!

This place was super good! We went while in town visiting family. Actually we traveled just over an hour to get here. My husband's sister and husband insisted it was well worth the drive and it was! It was a Saturday, but we got there right when they opened. It is suggested you get reservations, but I don't think we had one. But hardly anyone was there when we sat down, but it filled up pretty fast!
If you have 4 or more people you can do family style. I decided I really wanted some chicken livers, so I passed on family style. My half order of livers and potatoe soup and drink about added up to what Family style was priced at, but I wasn't super hungry and really wanted the livers.
Tea or lemonade comes with family style. Soda is extra. My BIL said he didn't hear them say that and he's been there many times. I didn't hear either, but asked why my husband got tea and he said since it was included and it made me laugh.
They bring out the salad and then the main meal. They had 2 kinds of coleslaw and then went with fried chicken and roast beef. The had a choice of sides as well. I wasn't really involved with choices, but it all looked really good.
I thought service was top notch. We never went without and they were quick to take away empty dishes and bring full ones if requested.
I am sure we will be back and I will opt for family style. The chicken looked delicious! I made my parents jealous with my photos!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Mar 20, 2018
While visiting my parents my sister and her husband decided we all needed to go to Haubstadt to eat at the Carriage Inn. It's just over an hour driver, but they said it was worth it and they offered to drive us all there.
They were so right. We were there just after 4 and got a table right away. It did sound like you would normally want to have a reservation. When we left it was very busy.
The main reason we came was for the fried chicken. It's all my brother-in-law talked about on the drive. We opted for family style which is unlimited.
We went with fried chicken and roast beef. Our sides were green beans, mashed potatoes with dressing, and corn. We also got both coleslaws, a vinegar based and the other mayo based.
I preferred the sour coleslaw, but everyone else liked the sweet. I also really liked the fried chicken. It was probably the best I've ever had. The green beans were a little mushy, but the mashed potatoes were good. The bread was homemade and very light.
We were all too full to get dessert. I am glad we had the chance to check out the Carriage Inn while we were in town.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Courtney J.Fort Branch, IN941Jun 1, 2022
Love their home cooked meals and they have some of the best chicken livers and mashed potatoes I have found in the area.
