Pros:
-Portions here are huge when you get it to-go
Cons:
-Whenever a dish supposedly comes with "salad," when you get it to-go (unsure about in the restaurant) it is almost always actually cole-slaw

Arroz con Pollo ($11.00)
Rice mixed with shredded chicken, carrots, peas, tomatoes and scallions. Portion served as 3 meals. While I enjoyed the texture of rice/shredded chicken, the taste was fairly one-note to me. I could mostly just taste chicken and the occasional pea. The carrots and shallots don't really come through at all, and certainly no tomatoes. Mixing the (delicious!) fried plantains into the rice adds a needed depth to the dish and is highly recommended.
I've ordered the Beef Stir Fry in the past and would get it again--more interesting flavors!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Mar 30, 2015Previous reviewPros:

Picadillo de Res (~13.00)
Beef stir fry with onions, tomatoes, red & green peppers.vComes with lots of rice, salad, and two large fried plantains. Portion is enough for 2-3 meals. The rice is fantastic! Perfect texture. Comforting and filling. The beef is nicely seasoned and altogether with the vegetables this makes for a wonderfully hearty meal. Top it off with the sweet fried plantains and this is a winner. I didn't even know I liked fried plantains before Camino Real! Highly recommend this dish. - Earl C.New York, NY87227378Jun 23, 2009
WOW!! I've been craving some sort of Latin American food for months now. I just arrived from Europe... Good Latin food in Europe doesn't exist!!
This place was awesome! I love the Fried Plantains with Guacamole and the Columbian Stew with Tripe, it was excellent. My friend for the Pork over Rice dish wish was also delicious.
The people were nice and welcoming and the service was quick. I would definitely come back here and eat some more of their delicious food.
The place was nice and clean. Customer service was awesome. I just wished they would have refilled my water without me having to ask for it, but that's just a minor glitch that can easily be fix. There was only one person serving the tables... maybe they were trying to save on labor with the whole economic crisis... mmmhm. I hope these guys don't lose business or close down. It would be ashamed because they're food is really good!
Try this place if you want to Latin Food, you wont be disappointed. :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Edward W.Boston, MA743370Apr 20, 2015
Courteous staff, enormous portions, & delicious taste for those who've never tried Colombian food. Don't be fooled by the $$ label; while it's true that the main entree costs between $12-$16 each, the amount of food that they load onto each plate can keep you satisfied for 2+ meals!
Appetizers- I decided to try their Chorizo con Arepa (Colombian Sausage With Corn Cake). For the price of ~$4, i got a huge piece of pork sausage that had just the right amount of smoky taste and tasted amazing paired with the 2 corn cakes. If you plan on eating here with a +1, trust me when I say that one order of this is enough for the both of you.
Main course- I got to try 2 dishes: the Bisteck a Caballo (Grilled Beef Topped with Creole Sauce) & Lengua a la Criolla (Boiled Tongue In Creole Sauce).
The grilled beef came with heaping portions of juicy beef covered with creole sauce, which tasted mostly like tomato with hints of garlic and other seasonings to give it a lightly salty and sweet flavor that I immensely enjoyed. If that wasn't enough, the dish also came with a bowl of rice & beans, 2 sweet plantains, and macaroni salad with shredded lettuce mixed in. Needless to say, there would be leftovers.
As for the beef tongue, I was very surprised by how soft the meat was. Like the beef, the tongue was also covered with creole sauce, which gave it the same flavor. However, I enjoyed the texture of the tongue a lot more, since it was ridiculously tender compared to the beef. The kitchen was also kind enough to give half of the tongue, which is very generous considering how large this cut of meat is. The dish also came with some stewed yucca, bowl of rice, and the same macaroni salad as before.
For the amount and quality of food we got, the $15 dollars per person price tag was a steal. I would highly recommend this place and will definitely be back to try their other cuisines.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Zack C.Chicago, IL53917Apr 19, 2015
Huge, flavorful and cheap portions make this place great. We each got the arepas with chorizo to start, and we realized it was unnecessary to have ordered 2 because we received so much chorizo! The arepas were very well made and the chorizo was smoky with tons of flavor.
We shared the Plato paisa and there was so much food! Great chicharrones, rice, beans, steak and a plantain! All of the above we got for under $25!
The only drawback of this place is that there's no alcohol.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Anita G.Holtsville, NY74713Jun 29, 2015
I am giving this such a low rating because I am comparing to Colombian food that is actually good.
I'm from NY and this place is nothing compared to what authentic Colombian food tastes like. The rice was good... Please consider another place. This just did not feel of taste right. I'm sure there's a better place out there.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nanci C.Arlington, VA8147270Sep 28, 2015
I walked in and wanted to try some new food. But once I walked in, the two waitresses were really rude. They had trouble understanding American English and one woman was so mean. She looked like she want to kill me with her stares in complete silence.
I felt really uncomfortable and then couldn't even skim through the menu so I just walked out. There was no greeting when you come in. It was dead silence. They were counting money as the registers and looks like they're about to close. I asked if they're closing already and the other woman just yelled out NO we are not close!!! Now I know why there are only 2 occupied tables during dinner time at 7pm.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Anonymous P.Los Angeles, CA11013851Oct 18, 2006
I thought the cooking was more than decent. The problem was the ingredients, which were unacceptable for the price. The cazuela de mariscos, for $14 or so, had no fresh seafood. The shrimp were kind of hard and dehydrated. Even worse was the guacamole, which was brown, and tasted brown.
The delivery was done well through http://www.delivery.com. But I can't recommend.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Arman H.Englewood, NJ350251Mar 26, 2010
Do you enjoy undergoing quadruple bypass surgeries? Do you have less than $12 to your name? Want to catch up on the award-winning telenovela "Más Sabe el Diablo?" If you're like me (God help you), then you answered yes to all of these questions and found yourself gorging at Camino Real, one of the best values in the Boston metro area.
I typically start with the chicken empanadas, which are served piping hot and made-to-order. The cornmeal-based dough is crunchy on the outside, soft, flavorful and slightly sweet on the inside. The filling is always delicious and goes well with a dash of hot sauce. Definitely try these; they're a good bargain at $1.40 per piece.
A few other things I like from here are: the passion fruit and guava juices (with water, not milk) for $2.80. Also the breakfast , especially if I'm hungover. I usually get the Calentado Con Huevo, both filling and CHEAP for only $6.54.
Finally, for lunch or dinner, I almost always choose the "Plato Paisa" as my main. For $9.35, this thing gets you so full you can't see straight. The platter consists of rice and beans top with a fried egg, a corn cake, sweet plaintains, your choice of beef, chicken, or pork, and PORK RINDS. No, not the Utz brand you buy for $.99 that tastes like a homeless person's cardboard house. I'm talking REAL pork belly, carved like a mango, shaped like a crown, and DEEP FRIED. If you think bacon is good, try this.
And if you're okay with good food on the cheap that has no regard for your LDL level, then eat here. Then thank me. Then take me with you.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - Laura B.New Haven, CT7587Dec 22, 2011
Not that I have been to Colombia, but I felt that the atmosphere seemed authentic, from the TV on a Colombian news channel to the odd and sparse decor. When we arrived, there was barely anyone in the restaurant and only a few other parties trickled in as we ate. I was surprised since it gets such good reviews on Yelp. We were starving so we decided to start with some appetizers: tostones con guacamole and the arepas. I lived on tostones when I studied abroad in Ecuador since I don't eat meat. These were yummy, for sure. However, what I really liked were the arepas. Whatever, the special flavor was, it was good. And even though I had grown so tired of queso fresco, it was so good to have it back in my life again, in this dish.
The entrees were HUGE and came with enormous sides as well. My boyfriend really enjoyed his liver and onions and my trout was delicately fried and tasty. Both entrees came with rice, plantains and salad. His also came with beans and a weird spongey thing that he didn't finish. It seemed to have been made of cornmeal.
All in all, a solid meal. I wish they had a liquor license. At this point, I was ready to say, YAY Camino Real! However, when it came to paying, that's why I wish I could give it a 2.5 stars. I came to use an old paper LevelUp coupon that is going to expire on December 31st. My boyfriend used his LevelUp card to pay the rest of the tab. They conveniently forgot to use my paper LevelUp and could not figure out a way to use my voucher. They said "just come back!". I explained that it is about to expire and asked for it on a gift card, oh no, this wasn't possible. In fact, they didn't even know how to use the paper LevelUp at all... Oh well, luckily LevelUp has good customer service unlike this restaurant...Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Brian D.Orange County, CA1827Jul 1, 2006
This was my first exposure to Columbian food, and while I can not gripe I was nevertheless underwhelmed. The empanadas were tasty and inexpensive ($1 apiece). The arroz con pollo was flavorful and satisfying despite the use of obviously frozen vegetables.
We also ordered this steak dish whose name I can not remember. The best part of this was the lemon cilantro salsa (fans of Argentine steak house would see the resemblance to chimichurri sauce). The meat was tender if not overly flavorful. One annoying thing about this place was that the server did not ask how the steak should be cooked. It came out well done to our slight dismay.
Like many latin american food places they serve fruit milkshakes (ie. mango, pineapple, passionfruit, etc) but it doesn't measure up to some of the other places around. It is almost like they used passionfruit flavored tang rather than real juice (ie. it was gritty).
Also be prepared for EVERYTHING to come with fries. No complaints about the fries themselves (how hard is it to fuck up deep fried potato?) but it got to be excessive.
I'd recommend getting empanadas or arroz con pollo as take out rather than sitting down at this place.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0
