Quite an interesting Monday:
- Ate my tasty Chicken Katsu Curry (Extra Spicy @ my request) from Muracci's
- Shooing pigeons away from said take-out Chicken Katsu Curry @ Union Square
- WTF? Is that heartburn?
- Walgreens and a bottle of Maalox Cherry. [I drank it straight from the bottle]
I needed to alter the Universe.
So...I walked up a couple of blocks and saw Cafe Bean at the corner.
I waltzed inside and decided to go with an order completely un-D-Man-like.
I
ordered
a
single
green-tea
latte...
...there, I said it.
Quite a funny view.
Right there, on the table
My bottle of Maalox
and the GT-latte
It was good. (the latte, not the Maalox)
The place was semi-full
and the menu looked enticing.
Clean place, and a terrific view of the surrounding neighborhood.
Ki Ni Shinai...3.5 stars!Listed in: Powerful Coffee!

I have a high tolerance for bad things when they are convenient (for example, see my review for Tao Yin Restaurant). In this case, Bean is near work and it isn't cash only.
The owner has gotten really bitter over the past few months, it's a drag paying money to have someone get mad at you for their own crises. -

One of the best cafe mochas i have ever had! (and i am coffee snob) my husband used to live in San Francisco and when I went to SF for a visit, one of the first places he took me to was here. I had no idea what to get so he ordered his favorite: large cafe mocha and an "everything" bagel sandwich with creme cheese, tomato, avocado and onion. And. I. Was. Hooked. it was super deelish! Every time I went to San Francisco, i made it a point to stop here for my coffee fix at least a few times! The coffee was delicious every time i went - especially when it is made by Chester!
It has been a while since I was last in SF and I still find myself craving it sometimes! One day I will be back, Cafe Bean... one day soon! -

Won't be coming back here.
Had a dutch pancake after all of the positive reviews and yeah "methinks not". Not a fan of oily breadedness for breakfast. Pricey even for the touristy area. Many other delicious options in SF. -

You're not welcome here if you access the internet from your own laptop. Or if you're over sixty. That's the impression I have of this place.
Let me back up: I guess I should start out by saying the food is decent, ambiance is comfy, and that my first experience there was all-around pretty satisfying. I was ready to recommend this spot to all my wayward friends traveling through SF.
So I did recommend the place: to my parents, who went there for breakfast the next day. Now, I'm not sure if the owner/cashier is a moody guy, or if he hates tourists (we're from the South Bay, but....whatever), or if he hates older people (which is what I suspect, seeing how my 26-year old self received amazing service), but from the story my folks gave me, he was incredibly rude this time around.
Right off the bat, my dad requested an internet code when he placed his order. The guy would not give it to him, claiming he'd been there before and should have still had it. The man flashed the code in front my dad for a second and then put it away. My dad is a shy guy and won't question people, so he didn't challenge the owner--he just kept his laptop in his bag, even though that was the point of heading to the cafe. He never even got on the internet.
After receiving their food, my parents, who are both in their sixties, asked if it'd be all right to move to a more spacious table that had just been vacated. The worker/cashier/owner (?) gave them a terse "I'm bussing this" and continued.
That's pretty much the main theme of this review: my parents got major attitude here. My dad said he even tried to compliment that guy on the cafe, saying it was "reallly nice, great location, great menu." The owner said, and I quote, "yeah."
He even interrupted their meal to tell them that they'd have to move if another customer came in.
It's strange to me, having been there just the previous day and having had such a different experience. I even saw that same owner aiding a young pair of travelers with their route down to Los Angeles. Maybe he was in a bad mood today? Or maybe it's something else?...
It shouldn't matter if you're young, old, a tourist, a local, or what -- you should be treated with some decency if you're gracing an establishment with your business. In fact, you really should be treated better than decent. My parents won't be returning to Cafe Bean. Neither will I. -

Third breakfast. Third time is the charm. Rereading my previous yelps that dutch pancake was pretty legit, but so was this egg white, tofu and veggie omelet. Doused with ketchup (my move) and served with wheat toast (their move), it was exactly was I was looking for.
On a day where it is just a bit to cold for the park yet to warm to be inside, enjoying this fine breakfast by the open windows looking out onto the city felt just right.2 Previous Reviews: Show all »

Came here in the late afternoon for two hours before dinner. The decor is quite nice but the customer service here is pretty darn crappy!
- The cafe mocha I ordered a bit watery
- I needed to use the bathroom so I walked over and saw that I didn't need a key so I went inside. I heard some kind of noise but didn't pay much attention to it. While I did my business in a span of 3 minutes I finally realize that the noise was from the sink. It was on and water was filling into a bucket. Then I heard a knock and then a series of very angry knocks on the door in less than a minute. I thought it was some kind of emergency so I opened the door before I got to wash my hands. There was this lady who then yelled at me saying, "Why would I go into the bathroom if I saw the sink was running?" I didn't want to argue so I walked away very pissed off. If I saw that then I wouldn't have used the bathroom and I would have needed to wash my hands after I was done so I would have turned off the sink eventually. And why would you use the sink in the bathroom to run errands for the cafe? A bit unsanitary don't you think?
She didn't even apologize and even complained really loudly after I left the bathroom. I was a customer and she treated me like I was in her home disturbing her routine. -

Cafe Bean, home of own of the best cappuccinos I've ever drank. Toss in that they have 21st Amendment on tap, a great central location to where I was staying, and the fun decor. Well, Cafe Bean, you have a new fan.

Tiny cafe bean made my trek to Muir woods very exciting. My friends and i got to this tiny cute place to get some breakfast to go.
I got a cup of coffee and two mini oatmeal cookies which had some flaxseeds embedded on it;that's all i needed for the cookie to steal my heart!! My friends got yummy bagel sandwiches with eggs, and bacon and as we sat in the car and were munching on the food,i could hear my friends go hmmm yummm.yeah!! they enjoyed their sandwich and i enjoyed eating my oatmeal cookie like a chipmunk sipping coffee at the side.
The place is tiny, with friendly people and it does look like a great brunch place with out door and indoor seating.I am glad i stepped into Cafe Bean and not Coffee Bean! :)

Cafe Bean has always been a good breakfast/lunch/brunch spot to eat at or just hang out drinking coffee or Italian sodas. It's a cute little cafe with awesome baristas/waiter and the owner is always friendly. My favorite part of the cafe would be the window seating with the comfy comfy couch and huge pillows. When it's a sunny day, like recently, it's good to grab a seat outside and enjoy your breakfast/lunch outside in the sun with umbrellas over you so you won't feel burnt.
Food wise, awesome selection of different options. You wouldn't get bored here. They always have specials on the board. Some menu items include bagels, baked goods (LOVE the almond croissant!), omelets, sandwiches, french toast, granola with fresh fruit, and Dutch pancakes!!!!!
Some of my favorites are the Cody's omelet (chicken apple sausage, mushroom, onion, cheese $7.95), Dutch Smasher!! (two fried eggs, ham, tomato, onion on top of toast with cheese...yumm!! $7.50) my FAVORITE.. It is soooooo good!!! The pancakes are always crispy at the edges, just how I like em' and always perfectly pan fried! You could just taste the awesome buttery taste in every bite!
This is the first place I had my first cup of coffee anything. They do yummy white mocha lattes, green tea lattes, and chai lattes. They also serve Italian soda of many different flavors.
Like I said again, great place rain or shine. If you want good breakfast/lunch/brunch, yummy coffee with friendly service, this is the place to go!!!Listed in: Where I like to stuff my face…

Some days, when everything is going wrong, and the people I love most are either nowhere to be found or have let me down miserably, I just wish that Jill S could astrally project herself (or hop on a boring old plane) back here, so that we could sit in the cushiony softness of the big window seat at Cafe Bean, sip coffee and green tea lattes, and munch on macaroons. I'd put my head on her shoulder and she'd hug me like best friends do, remind me that I'm better than all the stupid crap bringing me down, and then we'd get the hell out of there and do what we do best: get TRASHED. And dance. And laugh hysterically. And generally be the two most obnoxious creatures on the face of the earth.
God, I miss the good old days with Jill at Cafe Bean, where the people are friendly and the coffee is strong and delicious. And there's outdoor seating. And macaroons. And pretty much everything you need. -

We went into Café Bean, a coffeehouse in Nob Hill. I see this place all the time when I ride the 2 Clement or 3 Jackson Muni bus.
We order a double espresso and a green tea latte. Yes, I said green tea latte. I don't see this drink too much on coffee menus. I found it be have a little bit too much milk, but my husband thought it was perfect. We both agreed this was delicious. Their double espresso did not have as much cream in the top of the cup, but the coffee itself was not bitter and ended up being good too.
When we go back here, this will be our green tea latte spot. -

Nice friendly place with outdoor seating and good beer. I've never been disappointed. The French prints are nice and I didn't see too many hipsters on laptops during the times I go (thank goodness).
This place is convenient and comfortable.
Try to snag an outdoor table and enjoy the view :) -

Generic independent coffee house bla bla.
Notable for sunny corner window cushions, a location in the first stretch of unmetered street parking as you head from downtown into the Tendernob.
Bla bla beer and wine bla.
Bla bla free wifi bla bla.
ANOTHER PLACE WITH A CRANKY OWNER WHO WON'T LET YOU PLUG IN YOUR LAPTOP EVEN IF YOU JUST ORDERED STUFF AND YOU'RE ABOUT TO GO DEAD!!!!

Oh man this is a great little heavenly breakfast place!!
This cafe is perfectly situated at the east and south corner so that you can get the most sunshine... and on this sunny Sunday morning me and my company were soaking in the sun after days of the tiring rain...
Sitting at the cushioned sofa corner of the cafe, having my mouth-watering delicious cinnamon sugar dutch pancake (thin crusted edge crepe style, heaven!!!) with dark French coffee (you can ask for soy milk as they keep it in the fridge), while also forking into my friend's Van Gogh omelette (bell pepper, onion, avocado, replaced cream cheese with olive spread, and eggs with egg whites.)
The deco is very Netherlands with lots of bright colours, high ceiling, even the bathroom where they also used as kinda a storage room impressed me :)
What more can I ask for? It's a totally easy-to-miss place as it looks totally ordinary from the outside. Don't let the outside fool you. -

I live in the neighborhood and come here frequently for brunch on Saturdays or Sundays. I typically order the lox omelet and get it tailored to my taste (plus avocado and tomato.)
It's a straightforward meal but it's exactly what I want and crave on the weekends.
The gentleman and lady who run the spot are amiable and attentive.
I'd encourage you to go but don't steal my comfy couch spot in near the window! ;) -

This place used to be owned by the fabulous and sweet Bianca. It also used to be teeny tiny and on Post St.
The newer location is bright (by San Francisco standards) and there is outdoor seating to. Good place for a little breakfast or late afternoon treats. The Bean has a nice international appeal. -

Can I five-star this place 'cause its bathroom is plastered with R. Crumb smut and the papered walls encourage graffiti? Yes, God damn it, I can. I tagged that isht up.
Also: relaxed sunlit dandy serving killer omelettes and fresh guava juice. -

After much debate, my roommate & I decided we'd give Cafe Bean a shot. The pictures of Dutch pancakes were simply TOO freakin' delicious looking to pass up. Crepes? Who needs crepes when you have Dutch pancakes. Perfectly seasoned logic!
So after a short walk from our apartment we arrive to find the place littered with locals and tourists alike. A very good vibe. The woman behind the counter was nice and very accommodating. Chester himself, red & yellow hair tips was bustling about, tending to customers, taking orders, etc. Very good service.
We take a seat, of which there were plenty, and sip on our delicious coffees and wait for the food. A short while later, the arrive. The Dutch Pancake Blaster with cheese, eggs and ham. And the pancake with strawberrrrrrries. Oh hellz yes.
A little slippery on the plate, but WHOLLY delicious. The strawberries tasted very fresh & the ham, cheese, egg trifecta was perfection. Sweet & savory bliss. Really, I could go on and on, but you'd be better off trying it yourself.
The place is great & with a smattering of locals, you'll be sure to find well-dressed art students, artsy 20-somethings and tattooed coffee-lovers. Trés San Francisco. Come here for an authentic SF-coffee/breakfast experience! -

I LOVE my apartment! And one of the reasons is Cafe Bean right outside my front door! Coffee is my vice...and I'm ok with that! So I'm glad it's close by! The extras for the coffee are great! I love that they have an assortment of spices and sugars so you can customize your cup! But the greatest thing about Cafe Bean is that they serve the best breakfast. One of the simple pleasures in life is sitting in the sunny widow sipping coffee and enjoying breakfast on a Sunday morning with someone you love! Now what could be better than that?!
Thanks Chester!!! -

i love cafe bean!
i live across the street and am usually there every day. the owner knows me by name and knows what i order. sometimes, hes even got it ready for me when i come in.
the coffee is pretty good, as is the food. but, i come here mostly for the company of awesome locals and that everyone knows my name.
many afternoons this past summer were spent sitting at the tables in front observing all of the interesting happenings at jones and sutter. my roommate and i even coined our most infamous game here...french or homeless? -

Oh dutch cinnamon sugar pancakes and bacon. :) I think thats all I need to express.
I loved this place, from the decor and the couch corner to their food and papaya nectar. It made my morning. Plus, they had brie on a croissant too, but those pancakes were too hard to pass up. -

I think this place is pretty cute. The staff is a friendly crew. I think they might be family, but I'm not sure.
The food is tasty (bagel with cream cheese, avocado and tomato...so good!) While I agree that the coffee isn't the greatest (I'm drinking it right now and it tastes a little watery to me) it's still decent. And yes, better than Starbucks (as I've heard other people talking about in previous posts.)
I do enjoy the place though...it's quiet and friendly, the walls are bright so that makes the place seem bigger. I like the curved wall in the back part of the place...just makes it look personable. And I'm currently sitting in the window seat and am enjoying the sunshine (which I was shocked to see after the horrid rains of yesterday).
If you're in the hood, check it out. It's a quaint and cute little place. :) -

Quick food in a cute cafe.
I like cute, always makes my experience better.
Starter: Iced Caramel Latte with skim. VERY GOOD!!! Perfect amount of all ingredients. Gave me my daily needed kick.
Cinnamon and Raisin Bagel w/Cream Cheese. Soft, warm bagel and just the right of amount of CC.
Hubby + Kid had pork sausage, it was generous in size, scrambled eggs, sour dough toast. (Husband Raved over it)
Total bill under $16.00
Good, Cute, Inexpensive and not too busy! -

Coffee is not the best, but then again it's always better than starbucks...but the setting is very lively, crew is nice, there's free wifi (which isn't the case at Starbucks), and if you've been to Amsterdam, then you've been to the bulldog cafe and you'll be able to appreciate the decor on the wall (don't be mistaken though, they have a poster of the bulldog cafe, not the products...)
It,s just a cool little neighborhood joint (no pun intended), nothing pretentious, just nice. -

They make decent coffee and espresso drinks, but I was quite disappointed one morning when I ordered what should have been a quick breakfast before work with a friend, and had to wait so long for it that I had to take it to go. The person behind the counter apologized for the wait, and the breakfast sandwich was fairly good, but the wait put a damper on my morning, and it was definitely not busy enough to justify it.

It's a good change of pace from the usual breakfast spot. They have a decent selection of food ranging from dutch pancakes to omelets to sandwiches. There's an art school crowd being so close to the academy. It's a nice spot to read the paper over breakfast, but a little overpriced. Oh, and when you pay with a credit card, they don't have a spot to leave a tip so bring a couple bucks to throw into the pitcher.
Update: I have been going back regularly for breakfast and also for beers on a nice day. The food gets better and better! I love people watching at one of their outdoor tables. I'm upping my vote to 4 stars from 3. -

This has got to stop. Seriously. I figured by the time I reached my current age I would've grown out of the Jewish guilt. But no. It comes back each and every day to bite me in the ass. Why do I walk out of my way to get a cup of so-so coffee? Why do I insist on even having another cup of coffee even though two are already burbling in my tummy and my hands are already shaky?
Guilt. Plain and simple. When I lived in this hood I'd go here from time to time and befriended the owner and his wife. I heard about the struggle to stay open, the plight of a small-business owner, and he knows my name and calls me by it! Sheesh...I think I need therapy. :) -

I stop by here every so often during the week to pick up my occasional mocha before work - some mornings I need that extra kick, you know? But someone I met recently recommended that I stay and eat breakfast there too because their food is yummy.
So, my boyfriend and I ventured over there last Sunday and tried their "Dutch Smash" (also recommended): toasted large dark good-for-you bread slice topped with sauteed onions, slices of tomato, cheese and fried egg. It certainly was yummy! Can't wait to come back to try some other breakfast goodies there! -

The dutch pancakes are very good: crispy and well browned on the outer edges, and "al dente" on the inside.
The espresso is good: I liked the macchiatto (See my photo)
The green tea latte is very good: they use a green tea powder mix; I don't know which brand, but whatever it is, it's very good. It doesn't have the "metalic taste" of some green tea lattes; it's more gritty, in a good way. And the perfect amount of sweetness. -

Costa Mesa, CA
The service could use some work. I've been in eh.. 3-5 times on a few SF trip and everytime was greeted by a different group of college students causing a ruckus. That in itself can put a visitor off.
Considering my cafe standards are quite low coming from a southern california point of view. We have very few cafes and they are usually sub par (if even),
I ordered an onion bagel with cream cheese, lox, and tomato (awesome) though eh.. a little over priced. I could've walked to some super market and made it myself but hey... why make the effort.
I did also order a breakfast plate that wasn't really pallatable. It might've been the eggs or something but it just wasn't good.
But to every cloud the silver lining was a breakfast sandwich that took my breath away. Wheat bread, thinly sliced ham, cheese, red onions, over medium egg. Heaven. It sounds like a hodge podge of ingredients but I was in love. Ah.
My boyfriend and I don't drink coffee so we ordered their orange juice. Uhm, in all of it's sour glory it seemed VERY fresh squeezed. Sugar anyone?
Oh and a few doors down there's a nice shoe shop for any shoe heads out there looking for something different (again in according to so cal standards)
Oh and the lady that cooks in the kitchen is terrifying especially if she takes your order.
There's a potentially amiable asian man that works register on occasion. I say potentially because it doesn't seem genuine or sincere but at least he faked it. -

Café Bean is my current coffeehouse crush in Nob Hill. They make delicious mocha lattes...super foamy with the perfect amount of grated dark chocolate on top. Mmmm! Likewise, their soy chai is amazing! Now, I just need to stop running to Starbucks every time I get a coffee or tea hankering! This place is definitely worth backtracking a few blocks on the way to work.
Can't wait to try the Dutch coffee everyone is raving about! :) -

It's a freaking coffee shop! Who cares, right? But really, there is something about the way that ambience can envigorate the taste buds.
The ambience here (and it took me a few visits to realize this) is above average. I don't think it's the best, but I think it deserves some credit.
Yeah the name sucks, but don't all coffee houses have crappy names?
I'm just happy that it's open early on the weekends when I need it the most. And the ham and cheese croissant that I had last sunday was ridiculously good (it was the cheese, but I don't know what kind - gruyere?)
But really, who reads reviews about coffeeshops?
Have we really become this pathetic in our own daily lives to be writing about coffee shops when what we really want to write about is sex? -

Lovely juices, more breakfast items than I might anticipate from a cafe & friendly service. It has the feel of a cute neighborhood cafe, complete with the cushioned bench in the window. The food is, as others have said, fairly straightforward. Little in the way of flair or presentation but this did not bother me in the least. A glass of mango juice and breakfast sandwich on a croissant was just what I needed. My only complaint? A little pricey for what it is but worth a stop if you are in the neighborhood.

love, love, love cafe bean! I have been coming here since I moved to SF 2 years ago. Chester is a sweetheart! They have free wifi but you'll have to charge your computer somewhere else---there's no place to plug it into. I love their smoked salmon omelette and if you have a sweet tooth, you absolutely must try their dutch pancakes---nutella and banana, to be exact. (you can always ask for extra bananas). Most of the people in the cafe are students and the occasional tourist. It's a great place to people watch on a warm summer day.
