Blackout is like going to hang out with your old roommate -- who was kind of a rich kid back when you lived together -- but now he's SUPER into metal and his apartment is really awesome and he lets you drink his beer.
I like Blackout. -

Well I didn't get to blackout at blackout. I went there for their Halloween bash which was on the Saturday before Halloween. I really liked the decor and the fact that you felt like you were in a blackout there but that was not the kind of blackout I was expecting. ::::BATHROOM ALERT::::Their bathrooms weren't that bad I recommend the one in the middle because that ones lock actually worked. The other two bathrooms were scary to go into because you had to worry about someone walking in on you. I didn't like this part. There is one bathroom that has a sink in it which I liked because the other two you would have to finish you business then go out and use the community sink. Usually there was a line to use the sink but that didn't bother me that much because it just meant we were not hanging around a lot of dirty hand strangers. Fyi unisex bathrooms for those of you who care about that.
They had a open bar vodka hour that was somewhat a joke. Did I mention on this busy night there was only ONE bartender? So that open bar vodka started as quickly as it ended. The music was ok nothing to brag about. I would have to go back here one day because the first impression was rather dull. The plus side is that the Train is right on the corner and so is a McDonalds. Did I mention star bucks is right next door? I'm sorry I can't elaborate on the drinks but I don't think they were too pricey.
DON'T USE THE PHOTOBOOTH THEY HAVE IN THE BACK!! The booth is a complete joke. We wasted money on that one. Just bring your own camera and take pictures of yourself hanging around the booth that is much more fun! -

Any time I've showed up sober I had a lame time.
Any time I've showed up wasted I've had the best night of my entire life.
I'm not sure what to make of that. -

I've been to Blackout about four times now. Each time I increase the amount of dogs I bring with me. No one seems to mind, and I especially like Wednesdays when I have extra fabulous boys to help me pup sit. This alone is worthy of four stars.
I haven't tried the photo booth yet, but the real winning feature here is the patio, open 'til midnight. The picnic tables make this a good spot to meet up with a large group of friends. -

I took my friends from out-of-town here last night. um, geez. the name is quite literal. I couldn't see anything. it was all blacked out. cute by me, but this is like the kind of place you take someone from okcupid, so that you can get drunk and not have to see them in light. any light at all.
BUT the barbacks and bartenders were super nice, the 2-4-1 deal is a plus and the place is just lovely in its interior design. -

I avoided going to Blackout for months because the decor makes it looks like a trashy Manhattan B&T nightclub. In reality, this is a solid if unremarkable bar. The bartenders are friendly and there are solid beers on tap, but the decor is really quite cheesy. I understand they have a lot of theme nights, and while I've never been to one, I can imagine that the campy atmosphere is very appropriate for certain activities.
It's worth mentioning that they sometimes have very generous happy hours and the back patio is quite nice when it's warm out. Also, I walked by the other day and noticed a sign for a photo booth. I haven't checked this out yet, but in my book, that's a huge plus. -

Meh.
Went here last night because a friend of a friend was DJing.
The layout is pretty uncomfortable. There are tables, stools and booths in front of the bar in a very long narrow space. There's not much room to dance in front of the DJ booth. There's a room in the back that's hidden away behind a curtain with not much seating, nothing on the walls, etc. It's mostly an empty box. The bathrooms are unisex and pretty grungy.
My review may be tainted by the fact that it was free vodka night on the only night I've ever been to the place.
Most of the patrons were just legal to drink and extremely wasted. Because of the cramped seating situation, I had three men fall over my stool and almost on top of me. There was a fight at the bar, strange men kept putting their arms around me or their faces in mine.
Even though the room was more swamped than the bar, the bartenders avoided eye contact. I kind of don't blame them if last night was indicative of a normal night at Blackout.
I guess if you've just turned 21 and enjoy an evening of drama followed by a night of puking, this is a good choice.
2 stars because I believe that if the lay out of the place were better, I would've been able to block out the annoying things that were going on around me. I could imagine the night having been a bit more obnoxious under the cramped circumstances.
I was happy to get outside once I left.Listed in: Not so good:/

I keep forgetting I really don't like this place. The decor is beautiful in all black, it's misled me to believe it's something it's not. The music is always some variety of horrible rap or pop, the drinks are expensive and generally weak, and the vibe is poor.
Next time I'll just default to black rabbit. -

You could live up to the name of this place, or at least get very close to it, on a Tuesday, when drinks are two for one all night. But we're not talking Old Crow or Bud Light. You can get Lagunitas IPA here, 2-for-1, on Tuesdays. And any bar that has Lagunitas on tap steals my heart.
The atmosphere ain't all that great (empty black booths with lonely flickering candles) but it's a late night place, so what was I doing in there at 8 o'clock anyway? After 2am I'm sure it turns into a carnival of sexy people, all of them sloshed, well on their way to blackout.
They do have a patio here, which is pleasant on a warm night, and a mysterious gas bbq -- when do they light it, and what do they grill? PM me if you know...Listed in: Cheapskate's Delight

One of the best bar environments I've ever been in, it also has a beautiful back yard and almost art deco feel.
The bartenders are incredibly friendly and sometimes double as DJs playing really wonderful, fun, eclectic music. -

Pretty chill place. We just watched the light festival and all the bars nearby were too packed, so we wandered on over here. The decor's all black of course. Some seating along the sides and we got a couple seats at the bar. Got about 3 beers, shot of whiskey, and a mixed drink for less than $25. Can't beat those prices, especially compared to clubbing out in the city.
Decor was average, the music was unique (no mainstream mixes) but it was a chill atmosphere after a hectic night. Drink prices remain the same all day-$5 for a beer + shot, $5 cocktail pints. Didn't try that out but the mixed juices looked nice (in slushy-like containers).
I prefer flashy spots, so I wouldn't come back here. But it's the place to be if you're looking for a low-key place to hang...especially after 1am hits and you're hoppin' around. -

I am fighting back tears while I write this review. This will become clear later on.
When I first came to Greenpoint, Blackout was always an exciting idea. I could not wait to check it out. So, I went around 11 for the first time and it was just aiiiiiite. Then, I found the reason it was built: to be the late night jumpoff.
After hitting up bars, this spot was perfect to hit up after 2:30am. Plus, it is around the corner from my house. Each time we'd go, it would be more bumping than the last time. Music was good and loud I was neckin;, spoonin;, milkin'; you name it, I did it there.
Then it turned downhill. The late night jumpoff (LNJO) became the late night sit down. The bar became filled out he/shes. It became a real challenging game of Guess the Gender. I had no idea where I was. The music became radical hipster music that sounds like 15 year old girls whining about getting BMW 323 instead of a BMW 550.
This was not just one time either; it happened over the course of a few months. In fact, I had free drink chips, so I went last night. The beer taps were dirty and flat and the crowd and music were both awful. I left my beer and my heart in Blackout. I felt unwelcome.
I have deemed Blackout: "Never Again."
Goodbye Blackout. What Could Have Been?
PS Beware of The 2for 1 Tuesday. You buy a drink and get a chip for a later one. So, do not go up there and order two drinks and expect to pay for only one. You pay for 'em both and get two chips to redeem later onListed in: Never Agains

Blackout is just what this neighborhood needs---a sleek and upscale drinking place that isn't pretentious or annoying---but rather well currated, thought out and executed. The staff of men and women are all pleasing w/o being over over zealous. I am very into the total vibe and love the whole package of the place from start to finish.
The prices are great and happy hour is cheap and strong. The only drawback may be some people in greenpoint (ahem Briana M) may not get the point of this bar or the genius behind it. I have been in five or six times since it's inception and have had consistent service and beverages each time. I like the mixxy crowd of people and faces. -
Review from David P.
This is the newest addition to the Greenpoint bar scene. Located next to a Polish meat store and marked only by a small neon sign above the door, Blackout is worth checking out.
It's a long, narrow space consisting of a huge front room, small back room, and a back garden space. Seemingly everything is black including the ceiling. The lighting is nice in the front room, but the back room is dark, dark, dark. The outside space could use more chairs (I only saw a few benches).
Prices are mid-range ($6 for a pint of Radeberger and $8 for their signature cocktail, "the Big Easy," which tasted sort of like a fruity Manhattan).
The bartenders were very nice and chatty without being obnoxious. I'm not sure what kind of vibe they are going for, however. I kept thinking, "what does this bar bring to the party that's different from the other 20 bars in the neighborhood?" I think I sort of got a CoCo 66 vibe from it, but that's just a quick first impression. -
Review from Connie C.
Don't be put off by the potentially dive bar-y entrance. (Not that that would usually put me off but it would for some.) This place is actually really cool inside. It's very art deco with it's rectangular stacked vases and black and silver/white theme. Mirrors are everywhere including the table tops.
The bartenders are friendly though, yes, most of them don deep-v tees. My bf's butt was grabbed by a stranger and he got a free drink after about 2 rounds. Something was up, but I wasn't bothered.
Drinks are cheap. A beer and shot was $5. Our friend was DJing that night, so it was fun times.
I love how the fancy bathrooms aren't separated into girl/boy so if there is a wait it's short.
It was a bit too cold for the patio that night, but that looked nice too.
The bf lost his wallet that night (the night before our flight home), so let's just say the bar is rather appropriately named. -

Two words- Late Night Jump OFF!!!!
No one is here until at least 1230...then it jumps off
cant see a living soul in here, I once met a girl and thought she was a dime- then i saw her in the light and she was definitely a nickle- so beware bros.
If I do stop in for a happy hour sip, I find myself pondering Blackouts existence in this neighborhood- along with other Greenpoint anomalies (and also the amount of signs and their misspellings at the Cheap Charlies down the block).
But I digress, this place fills the gap of a proto-Loisaida Gramercy- Inwood barclub mix right here in good ole' Far East Midtown (Greenpoint).
It also follows the new trend of cool lavatorial basins and sexually ambiguous WCs.
PS NOT DOG Friendly, do not bring your girlfriend's Great Dane in, even if very quickly.
and I spoke with the workers it is definitely NOT a Polish bar. Before I told them I was Polish, I asked if it was and they said no- so there was no pro-Polish inquisitory bias.Listed in: Teetotalism anti-fun

All in all, this place rocks. $5 dollar whiskey shots, great music selection, plenty of space to dance, outdoor patio open when it's warm outside and free champagne on your birthday.
The story: I was going to give Blackout 3 stars because we came here on Saturday night at 2am. The place was pretty quiet - they didn't see us coming. We put money in the juke box even though there was a DJ....DON'T DO THAT! Obviously, they don't play the juke box when they have a DJ going but we were a bit too crazy to notice the difference.
But the DJ played really fun music with visuals on the big screen to accompany the tunes. We had plenty of room to dance and only got yelled at once (don't try to choreograph a dance with chairs at 4am!)
Plus, Jameson shots are only $5 dollars. Granted, they are served in smaller shot glasses than other bars but STILL. -

Came here for a drink last night and had a great time. Friendly bartenders, good happy hour deals, beautiful dark interior.
I didn't see get the super Polish or super hipster vibe that everyone else was talking about. The music was at the perfect level and it was NOT techno.
Didn't happen to notice any patrons screaming in the streets, either. That's what the Black Rabbit is for... this place is classier than that. -

I enjoyed the happy hour drink special on Cinco de Mayo. It looked like the employee who was outside was having a hard time figuring out how to use the grill to make hot dogs for the party that was happening, but they seemed friendly enough.

I think it's weird that people say that this bar has a good environment. I whole-heartedly disagree. It looked so cheap, like the walls were a movie set and were collapsable or something. I had fun because of my company, not the environment. DJ's were brats (as they often are at bars). Bartender was friendly though. I went on a Saturday night and it was nearly dead. So obviously other people have caught on and feel the same way. No line for the bathroom though. That's the plus of going to an empty bar...

I cannot possibly pass up a bar with a happy hour this cheap. $2 - $4 for a pint? My only regret is that I don't live nearby (my liver is secretly thrilled).
The beer selection on tap is what will keep me coming back. When I visited you could choose from a pilsner, wheat, Belgian, amber bock, black beer, and a stout. Believe it or not, it was the bock that only cost $2 during happy hour. A-Ma-Zing. I've never been there when live music has been playing, but during the off hours it is extremely dark and pretty chill. -

Went for a friends birthday last night and had a really solid time, The lighting was good(or lack thereof), the music was happy and the beer was well priced. There is also a cool outdoor patio in the back where everyone was in good spirits, I'm pretty sure they closed it off at some point during the night maybe for noise issues? Anyways it was all in all a really comfortable place to be and would definitely not mind coming back. Keep in mind this was a Monday night so it could be a totally different experience on the weekend but i really liked the energy of this place. I think the name however is pretentious and kind of immature but do not hate me, i still like this bar. Support local business!

So now that I am single again, this place still rocks my socks off! The staff is so f-ing friendly that I can't believe that I'm in NYC! The patrons, gay/straight/male/female/whatever are so attractive that it's hard not to ogle them, and yet still no attitude...I mean really in NYC?!?!?!?! I feel really guilty writing this as I do NOT want that Chelsea boy contingency coming to this bar, but it's so damn fun! Greenpoint on Wednesday nights at Blackout is the place to be for that hump day stress relief!

The male-model bartender didn't know how to pour a pint and thus gave me half a glass of foam and techo music was playing at 7:30 PM on a weekday - strikes one and two.
But it's a really nice space (if a bit dark, but that's probably their theme) and they have a nice beer selection - too bad everything else about it seems so completely lame. But if they're going for a chic Manhattan scene, I smell a rumble with the Club Exit crowd on some Saturday night in the near future!
All in all, what a waste of a potentially great bar. -

The newish Wednesday night gay night ("I Have To Work Tomorrow") perfectly overlapped with my music tastes (dreary Smiths, hip The Drums, classic Depeche Mode). The go-go boys are a bit much (Chelsea-ish) but the crowd was a nice alternative to the morose Metropolitan Bar crowd.
