About the Business
friendly and informative service. After we have been friendly to you we will try to answer any questions you have about our merchandise. My employees are great and actually like their jobs...although we don't claim to be geologists we have enough knowledge between us - or will find the answer for you if we don't. We take pride in what we do and what we sell to you. Rocks and minerals are our specialty here along with more beads than you can imagine. It boggles the mind. (ours too, sometimes) . Indonesian carvings and drums, lots of choices of jewelry (for kids too) incense and more. Your kids will love our "Break-your own" Geod's (what kid doesn't like to smash something with a hammer?) We get told time and time again how much our customers like our store and make a point of always visiting us when in the great city of Charleston. Please stop in to visit us and always let the manager (me - Carol) know if you have been treated well. We Rock!

What Scott S. said.
Replace all references to his 3-year-old with references to me.
That should about do it. I can't believe he beat me to the FTR, I think I was here first. He's not such a bad Yelper after all.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 26, 2010
Great selection and great prices.
I went in thinking wow, minerals, yeah. What else can we do with out afternoon but the things they offer at the amazing prices is fantastic.
Buddha's, earrings, dresses, necklaces and incense.
Just an overall unique selection for everyone male or female, young or old.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 4, 2010First to Review
As I was sitting here reading reviews and sending comps, I look on the table next to me and see a little ring that we bought my 3 year old from this place. It occurs to me, I have never reviewed Black Market. Secondly, we visit this store everytime we visit downtown Charleston. I know...bad Yelper!
This is a cool store to peruse. They have many, many rocks and geodes, tribal type masks, necklaces, etc. I sometimes call it the hippy store. The employees are friendly and some are dressed very hippy-esque, if you will. My kids love it because they can bang on bongos and play with the rainsticks. They also have a lot of the magnet type bracelets and necklaces that seem to be the new thing nowadays. Also, many, many marbles of all shapes and sizes as well. You can also purchase your own geode. It looks just like a rock but thses are meant to be broken open. In doing so, it contains the various colors of crystalized rock. A geologists dream store I guess. Just neat.
Quick story. We bought the boys there own mood rings made of...well, I don't know what they're made of. Anyway, within a block of the store my 3-year old drops his and it breaks in half. Luckily, they are only a buck so we go buy another one and the clerk gives us 10% off. Within another 20 minutes, his falls off of his finger and breaks again. So as we are leaving the downton area, we stop again and my wife buys three more but only lets on that she bought one. This way, when another breaks she has a few replacements. Yep...the things we do to keep our boys happy sometimes.Helpful 11Thanks 0Love this 9Oh no 0 - Anna H.New Orleans, LA941532Jul 30, 2013
Officially my favorite mineral store. On the first day of vacation, my boyfriend spotted this shop and pointed it out to me, knowing that I collect minerals. I've been to so many disappointing "rock shops" in the past that I kind of brushed him off, but the next day we were passing and he insisted that I at least check it out. So glad that he did - I'm in love!
The store is huge, and there's so much to look at that I could have spent hours just examining everything there. In the end I found a beautiful crystal pendulum, a Himalayan salt lamp, and a beautiful chunk of amethyst, all for around $16. I kept thinking that maybe someone got the numbers wrong, but the cashier confirmed that it was just that affordable. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Charleston.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dawn T.Aptos, CA50799124Jan 29, 2013
For someone who is just learning about stones and minerals, along with the energies they have, Black Market Minerals is a great shop that I discovered on a business trip to charming Charleston, SC in October 2012.
I must have spent over 2 hours in the store and purchased many items. I don't remember the young lady's name who helped me, but she was unbelievably patient and answered all of my questions with grace and a great amount of knowledge. We must have looked up a dozen stones in the store's reference books. She also pointed out a couple of pendants (one stone that is black and white and I cannot remember the name of right now) that were unusual and gorgeous. Every time I wear those pieces I receive the nicest compliments.
Since I was traveling when I shopped at Black Market Minerals, I couldn't really take everything home in my suitcase. I decided to ship quite a few items home. They all arrived unharmed and in a timely manner. I'd also like to point out that being from the Silicon Valley, the prices at Black Market Minerals were very reasonable. My husband and I go into mineral stores on all of our travels, and I've never seen amber priced so low.
Even if you are not into stones and minerals, it's a really fun place to check out while in one of the most wonderful cities I've discovered in a long time--Charleston!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Harry P.Chapel Hill, NC10216775Jul 18, 2012
Very cool rock place. They had a huge selection of minerals in all sorts of forms. I went there to get a geode and was not disappointed. They have a huge selection of them.
They have a ton of other curiosities. It's definitely a great place to stop in, beat the heat, and just marvel at all the items.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jia J.New York, NY311479466Dec 18, 2011
Whenever I don my shark tooth necklace, I think fondly of Black Market Minerals. I've had the tooth since 1997 (you do the math), and got it on the last visit I made to this store of natural curiosities while on a house building trip in Johns Island, SC with my high school.
As I recall, this is a huge store full of geodes, tumbled rocks, mood rings, wind chimes, rain sticks, gags, plush creatures, beads, teeth and bones, FIMO necklaces, and the like, and is super duper cheap in price while high in quality and variety. It's a required stop on the Charleston drag and a preferred alternatives to Sticky Fingers restaurant and all the t-shirt stores praising the Confederacy and blaring messages like "I know Ebonics - if you have a question, just AXE me."
Had the field trip nature of my forays into Black Market not truncated my browsing, I'd have a lot more keepsakes by which to remember this store. Yet my one blackened shark's tooth, which had been with me through college and grad school, in four different countries, in and out of daily showers, and steeped in the Caribbean Sea and Indian Ocean is sufficient. Until the next time.
Glad to see through Yelp that this establishment is still up and running, rather than becoming another missed fossil of the nineteen hundred and nineties. If you're in town, you'll find gifts en masse here for the holidays or for any other occasion.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Dion L.San Francisco, CA22260112Jun 16, 2012
Totally am not into rocks and semi-precious gems and the like...but after stumbling upon BMM, I have a total respect for the store and for those who like baubles and trinkets and geodes the size of a large car tires.
The one thing I did buy, was a pair of break-your-own geodes, which I loved as a child. These were for gifts, and marked in the bin at two different price points. Small and large. Since I didn't know what constitutes large or small, I picked two I liked, and to my surprise the cashier said she'd ring the purchases up as both small geodes even though one was large. She also took time to explain the country or origin (Morocco) and some tips to cracking them. (Put between washcloths or in socks to prevent shards flying everywhere.)
Worth a few minutes of unique perusing if you're in the area!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amanda S.Chicago, IL239780535Nov 15, 2012
Really cool spot with very quaint items.
You can find just about any stone in here. Loose or made into a bracelet, necklace, whatever.
They have the cheapest Himalayan salt lamps in town. I checked a few other stores in the area and they definitely beat them and by a lot more than just a few bucks.
I also got Himalayan salt candle holders which I use at home. I black stone bracelet that is good for healing and a few magnetized black healing stones.
I like that every stone has the information about it's history and uses. They have a lot to offer here and the staff is friendly.
Stop by and check them out!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Ashton M.Johns Island, Charleston, SC3010644283Mar 25, 2015
